All memes aside, Tom Nook isn't greedy at all, he asks for money because HE built YOU a house, it's only fair, things cost money Pretty sure that in New Horizon he ordered the parts needs to build your house too, otherwise he probably would of asked for a few materials
Then he makes you build three homes because he stuffs up communicating with other prospective villagers and thinks giving you some fencing is enough to repay you. I underatand it's really the game making you and if this was in real life, my character would have the option to say no and able to progress with life on the island without building someone else's home, I'm still going to blame him for that. Jokes aside, I didn't like him in Wild World, but I respect his business acumen and appreciate him as a character in Wild World (and would not have liked it if he didn't debut in any other installments after Wild World). I like him now that I found out about his life story years later.
Nobody seems to talk about how the villager you play as seems to think it's a good idea to either just show up to a new town or purchase a getaway package while having literally no money to their name. Tom Nook rolls with it one way or another and not only gives the player benefit of the doubt but a chance to make right. Any of his threats from the original game kind of seem justified when you put into perspective just how ridiculous it would actually be in real life to let the villager's devil-may-care behavior slide. Ultimately, I think Tom Nook just wants to see the player become a responsible, productive citizen.
Tom Nook is quick to clarify that he is only joking after that quote where he says he'll send goons after you if you don't pay your debt. So that quote from the first game is very poorly framed... You're taking his words out of context. =p
Tom Nook feels like a nice presence in New Horizons. He’s encouraging without being overbearing, he helps me with things like the DIY projects and never charges interest when it came to my home loan. He also never scared kids like Resetti did. I overall had begun to appreciate his presence since New Leaf.
Tom Nook represents a bit of a fear I've always had. I always worry that whatever I create will be horribly misunderstood. So it's nice to see that someone tries to understand intent.
Even in the first game, Tom Nook is very generous. Regarding the "goons" quote, I'm pretty sure the next thing he does is laugh and tell you he's joking. Not only that, dialog with the post office workers and the animals on your island make it clear that no one else even attempts to pay off their loans, with no negative repercussions. With that being the case, it's almost no wonder Nook is so grateful to you for paying off all your loans in that game that he builds you a gold statue for doing so.
The debt: No interest. No time limit. Literally not even a requirement to pay, just a VERY strong suggestion. The internet: He's as bad as Sephiroth in my eyes.
Most likely this: Many Islands were abandoned due to some stuff happening, and when Tom Nook realized what he could do with the Islands, he decides to take matters into his own hands and make them into places people would want to live in again.
Haha, I'd JUST closed YT when the notification for this came up. XD Anyway, great video! This lines up well with TheJWittz's video on Tom Nook, with a bit of GaijinGoombah mixed in for good measure. ^_^
Tom nook in game : gives you a whole house for free and lets you take forever to save up your bells . He also gives 90% of his bells to an orphanages. Tom nook on the internet : evil tanooki who wants your bells like a capitalist.
This neatly sums up how I've seen Nook throughout my life. When I was young I hated him since he kept offering upgrades on loan with no down payment or collateral while still urging me to pay off the current loan for the next upgrade. Now I consider him one of the nicest, most patient creditors in existence, and I'm thankful he gave me the opportunity to learn the importance of paying what you owe to others promptly in a risk-free context.
I never played Animal Crossing, so I thought it was true when everyone called him greedy. Jacksepticeye kept calling him a loan shark too. Then some fans tweeted about how he’s a really generous guy and I was confused. This video is my entire reaction to the whole thing.
Jack has said he hasn't played Animal Crossing before and even though I like Jack the Tom Nook is evil schtic is getting old its beating a dead horse at this point
I remember in the Animal Crossing Movie, Tom Nook's origins see him peddling his small wagon looking for second-hand stuff just to get by. Over the course of the movie, his efforts paid off from his own hard work and dedication as he sets up Nook's Corner
you ask him for loans no dead line to pay those loans no interest and 90% of the money goes to a child orphanage, and that all while he failed as a younger Nook... He doesnt deserve the hate :(
i’m constantly making jokes about how he’s satan and your island is hell, but i seriously love this guy. i mean he builds you a whole house overnight, he doesn’t force you to pay off your debt afterwards, he doesn’t charge you rent, and he’s helping his nephews start a business. pretty amazing.
He’s no villain. He takes care of his... nephews?.. Tommy and Timmy, helps them start a store and keep up the family business, builds you a house in one night with no down payment, never pressures you to pay debt, and has no debt interest whatsoever. Also in New Horizons he doesn’t upgrade a damn thing until you ask for it. My boy Nook is a saint
I've always just LOVED Tom Nook. He gives you a home for practically NOTHING when you had no plans when you got to where you are. As Gajin Goomba puts itlike in Japanese folklore, a tanuki would willingly give a person a large sum of money. There was no pressure, not payment plans, no bill collectors just no more until you pay it off. That sounds PRETTY generous, if you ask me. Tricksters, yes, but WAY better than kitsune.
Also (forgive me if someone else already commented this), he canonically donates most of his money to an orphanage, which even has a wing named after him. I love my boi Tom :')
If I recall correctly, the animal crossing series does have a timeline you just have to dig in the games for it and it shows Tom really isn’t a bad guy he has character development from the first game to now and it shows that he eases up and becomes nicer as the games go on and if you truly dig around the series for it you learn that Tom doesn’t actually keep most of the money he makes, and I mean MOST of the money as 90% of his earnings are indeed donated to charity. Theres a lot more through out the series that he does to show that he’s a good guy but that would almost double the length of this post to go into so I shall let anyone who reads this to do the digging themselves.
I don’t know why people think Tom Nook is evil. He gives you an infinite amount of time to pay your rent, he charges you for a good cause, so he can help build your house, and he actually donates like 90% of his earnings to orphanages. Plus this poor guy has been through a lot, including failing to live a good life in the city. Give him some love.
I agree, I don't find Tom Nook evil at all, I feel that he's just doing his job, if we want our house to be upgraded then we need to pay in order to get it done
I never once thought Tom Nook was evil. It's not like he's demanding payment asap or adding interest on my debt. I was happy saving money to upgrade my house and paying him.
He was a poor man, sleeping on his store when you try to break in into his cranny meaning he has no proper house to stay on, He donated 90% of his earnings to orphanages across 3 towns, builds you a house for 1 day without any Interests, Buys your town in case you don't want it so someone could take care of it. He's not a Villain He's the *_HERO_*
I personally think that the reason of why he was kind of a jerk in the earlier games is because he was still trying to recover from the scam he suffered, because in his backstory he lost everything by trying to establish his business in the city, so he was probably trying to not be taken advantage of, and even with that he was still ethical and nice enough to not play any tricks or charge extra to the player, and now in the newest games he's a lot nicer to the player, probably not only because of the success of his business but most likely thanks to Timmy and Tommy too. With all of this I would say that Tom Nook is probably one of the most developed characters in AC
Tom Nook builds you a house, gives you a loan with no interest which allows you to have a pretty cushy life. His only major flaw is he tends to be pushy, but only because he seems to genuinely care. I like to think that since the gamecube era, he has softened and gone through personal growth over the years.
When I first played animal crossing when I was 6 I declined bells when I tried to sell fruits and stuff because I thought they meant the bells that ring and stuff-
I never understood why people called Nook a villain. Do they just assume every video game needs a villain and he's the closest thing to one? Of course my first AC game was City Folk. Sounds like he was a bit more intimidating before that.
Tom Nook is just trying to do good business. You can pay back loans at your own pace and he won’t even be mad! He made the liberty of building you a house in a single day with no interest. Call Tom Nook whatever you want but he is a modest businessman and I would gladly lay down my life for this precious Chonky tanuki
The problem with Tom Nook is that he gives you what you want first, and then has the audacity to expect payment. If he forced you to cough up the bells BEFORE building your house, no one would have a problem with him. How do people think Tom Nook is a critique of capitalism? Because he doesn't just give you the house for free. The player doesn't care about Tom Nook's labor, or cost of materials. They feel they deserve his house, and shouldn't have to pay back. What moochers, aka socialists.
The JWitzz did a really good vid on this subject and even goes into detail about how there is some somewhat hidden backstories that show why Nook is the way he is.
I'm Almost on the Dev Side ever since I played Animal on the New Leaf for the first time, I always knew that Tom Nook wasn't even that bad at the first place. Heck! Before this video, I saw another video that explains why Tom Nook is actually Not the Bad Guy and why he's indeed Misunderstood. I have to Thank this Video so Much~♡
When you grow up and understand more about life, you understand how much of a good guy Tom Nook is. Go have a guy build you a house and charge you 0% intrest for a loan. Essentially paying off your loans at your own pace, no quest asked. Hes a saint.
My first impression of Tom Nook is that he's a humble business man, ofcourse he needed the money cuz that's his business, but what's good with him is that he's patient and understanding to us the player that owes him money,as long as you pay him even any amounts,he's fine with it I like how the Devs made a character that is not falling to the stereotype of an evil business man, respect for the Devs and to Tom Nook(that's why he's my fave Animal crossing character)
I've been on the tom nook defense squad for a while, + agree that the debt gives me much needed direction. Tbh, even that wasn't enough to keep me on the gamecube version, but the Miles goals are. I'm both very goal (& reward) oriented, but also poor at making decisions like setting my own goals. I don't need my hand held the whole time I'm playing a game, and if it feels like I ought to be able to make a choice but I'm denied it -- well, I don't like being railroaded either. But open ended games have always been tough for me to enjoy, and New Horizons really meets a great balance
I used to joke about him being greedy until I played the first game where a villager once telling me that there was no need to pay him back like I did since no villager ever pay for their houses. And it all made sense, it explained why he was living in such a run down shack at the beginning of each game, he was litterally ruining himself in order to offer the villagers proper homes. Since then, Tom Nook earned my deepest respects.
Speaking of open world games: Fun Fact: We all have Sega and the groundbreaking Shenmue to thank for all modern open world RPGs, since Shenmue is, in all reality, the grandfather of the genre. We also have Sega and the Dreamcast to thank for DLC, as Dreamcast games like Skies of Arcadia (which used a web link on the title screen of the first disc) and Shenmue (which used a Passport Disc) for DLC, were the first to have it.
Tom builds you a house and doesnt ask you for a deadline to pay it back. He allows Timmy and Tommy to buy all of your crap and doesnt complain if you spend money on something else. He is a very chill landlord!
Tom Nook isn't the villain, he's the victim because he has to deal with Timmy and Tommy wasting his money on the hundreds of spiders you give them Redd is the true villain because he actually scams you with fake paintings
Wild World tells us what happend in Tom Nooks early years. Back then, he and Sable were Childhood Friends, and would often hang out together. And he was in fact the thing that kept Sable distracted from the death of her Parents. They most of the time would gaze upon the Stars. However, what he dreamt about, was going to the big city and making himself a name. He was met with very harsh working conditions, the opposite of your working conditions in Population Growing, Wild World and City Folk, and didnt earn alot of Cash. He was also sending Sable alot of Letters, and even bought her a pair of scissors for her Birthday. When he finally got enough money, he was happy. He finally had earned enough to have a name of his own. When one day, someone who was close to him, stole all that Money. Who this Person is, is unknown. However, this is the early failure that was mentioned when Nogami talked about Tom Nook. Tom Nook started to send fewer and fewer Letters to Sable. And became depressed, which might explain the look in his eyes. A worn-out worker who just wants nothing more but to be where he was back then. To finally be his own Name. Tom Nook came back into town, embarassed. Still, he opened the Cranny, and gave Players the zero interest payment. It was something that he came up with because of the past, because of the working, the past payment he had to put up with. He also took Timmy and Tommy, who are not Blood related in any way to him, under his Tail, to keep them away from the idea of now going to the big city. He doesnt want them to end up like him. He is quite Misunderstood, but then again, you only get such Information in a game from the DS. "Yes, i lost more than just Money. I lost a friend." - Tom Nook

That's why i hate Redd, Rover, and Lyle, There's something fishy with that cat.... and no, it isn't what he eats.
Don't forget that in Wild World/City Folk (I don't remember witch one) Tom nook tells you himself that he had to sleep on a cutted tree.
*ON A FU**ING CUTTED TREE*

I Agree with Redd & Lyle;
But I Don't understand HOW Rover is a bad cat. . .

Tom nook:
A life mentor who teaches you how to be responsible and to get you a job so your not a broke jobless hobo in the real world.

Without him (and the player of coarse) everyone in AC:NH would be homeless and with no deserted island getaway package to have
@@ebaugh7320 and the ungrateful villagers have THE AUDACITY to say Isabelle is the one that's carrying the island??? I assaulted Shep over this, and that he gave me a CARDBOARD BOX in return for clothes.
It's weird that people call Tom Nook a villain and he is in actually a villain he's actually a good guy what the weirdest thing do people even remember Crazy Redd in wild world literally the dude sells counterfeit stuff in an extremely high price if you don't buy any of his stuff he will say thank you sarcastically if you didn't buy anything as a shop and the dude is literally in the black market I have no idea why people are saying Tom is a villain but redd is just he is the True Villain
Apparently Tom got scammed by a fox earlier in his life. People believe Redd is the one who did it but it not sure.
Serena Mall it was Redd.
All memes aside, Tom Nook isn't greedy at all, he asks for money because HE built YOU a house, it's only fair, things cost money
Pretty sure that in New Horizon he ordered the parts needs to build your house too, otherwise he probably would of asked for a few materials
Maybe the real money-absorbed tanookie was the friends we made along the way.
Tom Nook isn't a villain. He gives you an loan with no interest and no expiration

AC fandom: That sign won't stop me, because I can't read
The only Tanuki I like, yay!!!
Also Redd screwed him over if anything he’s the antagonist
Ah yes, someone acknowledges that
Even in the first game, Tom Nook is very generous.
“Becoming of this early failure, he has a sense of sadness to him.”
So THAT’S why his eyes are the way they are!
Tom Nook is a very good lad. There's no mortgages or anything. Just one payment if you want and you're done
They should put Tom Nook in Smash and his final smash is sending the Racoon Goons after you
The debt: No interest. No time limit. Literally not even a requirement to pay, just a VERY strong suggestion.
The internet: He's as bad as Sephiroth in my eyes.
TheJWittz covered his backstory and why he's a good character in a story type of way.
But there is still one last question. Where did he get all these islands?
idk, probably just found them
Most likely this: Many Islands were abandoned due to some stuff happening, and when Tom Nook realized what he could do with the Islands, he decides to take matters into his own hands and make them into places people would want to live in again.
HE WAS JOKING WITH THE RACCOON GOON THING. HE LITERALLY SAYS “HA HA, I’M JUST KIDDING” RIGHT AFTER SAYING THAT
Haha, I'd JUST closed YT when the notification for this came up. XD Anyway, great video! This lines up well with TheJWittz's video on Tom Nook, with a bit of GaijinGoombah mixed in for good measure. ^_^
I was just watching last earlier today!
Wait you missed part of Tom nooks “raccoon goons” line after that line he said he’s joking
Tom nook in game : gives you a whole house for free and lets you take forever to save up your bells . He also gives 90% of his bells to an orphanages.
Tom nook on the internet : evil tanooki who wants your bells like a capitalist.
Tom Nook is my favourite character and I don't understand why people dislike him.
Jack has said he hasn't played Animal Crossing before and even though I like Jack the Tom Nook is evil schtic is getting old its beating a dead horse at this point
we ain’t even gonna chat about how he legit builds houses in a day
I am no villain, I only want to help you expand your home 😁
I knew it Tom your my favorite animal crossing character
The narrator has the most blissful voice soooooo good
I remember in the Animal Crossing Movie, Tom Nook's origins see him peddling his small wagon looking for second-hand stuff just to get by.
Tanukis turning leaves into money explains why the trees sometimes drop bells when you shake them
I love Tom Nook! He deserves better
I finally found that out that he’s kind and not greedy because someone told him a sad backstory and I felt bad.
Thank you for this video! Thanks for your time and your work :D
Like the art style of this channel.
0:23 Not a made up currency, it is more like Miles with an airline company.
The real villain in Animal Crossing is Redd
I agree, I don't find Tom Nook evil at all, I feel that he's just doing his job, if we want our house to be upgraded then we need to pay in order to get it done
I never once thought Tom Nook was evil. It's not like he's demanding payment asap or adding interest on my debt. I was happy saving money to upgrade my house and paying him.
Look up The Green Scorpion's list of the Top Ten Video Game Shopkeepers. Tom Nook is number two on that list.
He was a poor man, sleeping on his store when you try to break in into his cranny meaning he has no proper house to stay on, He donated 90% of his earnings to orphanages across 3 towns, builds you a house for 1 day without any Interests, Buys your town in case you don't want it so someone could take care of it.
He's not a Villain
He's the *_HERO_*
I personally think that the reason of why he was kind of a jerk in the earlier games is because he was still trying to recover from the scam he suffered, because in his backstory he lost everything by trying to establish his business in the city, so he was probably trying to not be taken advantage of, and even with that he was still ethical and nice enough to not play any tricks or charge extra to the player, and now in the newest games he's a lot nicer to the player, probably not only because of the success of his business but most likely thanks to Timmy and Tommy too. With all of this I would say that Tom Nook is probably one of the most developed characters in AC
This made me cry, I seriously love Tom Nook and the way you talk so softly about him makes me soft 🥺👉👈
2:07 Is that why furniture appears as leaves in the inventory?
Tom Nook builds you a house, gives you a loan with no interest which allows you to have a pretty cushy life. His only major flaw is he tends to be pushy, but only because he seems to genuinely care. I like to think that since the gamecube era, he has softened and gone through personal growth over the years.
You could take the raccoon goon thing as a friendly, playful joke
Wait hisashi nogami? The person that made the splatoon series? This man is getting to sakurai levels of masterpieces
When I first played animal crossing when I was 6 I declined bells when I tried to sell fruits and stuff because I thought they meant the bells that ring and stuff-
I’m making a video game I hope that nothing is misunderstood
Well you made your first mistake, bucko. You have made art, or are in the process of making art. Therefore, by default, it is already misunderstood.
1:28 *I'm now just imagining a metalsmith character just gently rubbing their hammer on Tom Nook's head to soften it*
I used to misunderstand nook, but now I actually like him ,all players needs to realize what he does for everyone(u, his nephews, etc)
I have to Thank this Video so Much~♡
And some people, Yes I already know Tom is a Tanuki and Not a Raccoon(I didn't realize he was a Tanuki until I was 11 years old in 2014) xd.
2:50, I feel this is taken out of context slightly, as he tells you hes joking afterwards, love the video otherwise, Tom Nook is my fav
2:49
this quote is missing some very important context, that being that he tells you that he's just joking basically immediately after he says that.
You realize immediately after threatens you with goons, he laughs and says he was joking
When you grow up and understand more about life, you understand how much of a good guy Tom Nook is.
Go have a guy build you a house and charge you 0% intrest for a loan. Essentially paying off your loans at your own pace, no quest asked. Hes a saint.
There are no bad guys in Animal Crossing except maybe the Sea Bass.
We can't have an Animal Crossing game without Mr. Nook.
My first impression of Tom Nook is that he's a humble business man, ofcourse he needed the money cuz that's his business, but what's good with him is that he's patient and understanding to us the player that owes him money,as long as you pay him even any amounts,he's fine with it
I like how the Devs made a character that is not falling to the stereotype of an evil business man, respect for the Devs and to Tom Nook(that's why he's my fave Animal crossing character)
Tom Nook: I'm just an npc...
But he does charge me 10k just for destroying a bridge he forced me to make in the first place, so he is pure evil.
He never pressures you to pay off your debt. You don't even have to. How is Tom Nook bad in any way?
Speaking of open world games:
Fun Fact: We all have Sega and the groundbreaking Shenmue to thank for all modern open world RPGs, since Shenmue is, in all reality, the grandfather of the genre.
Super Nook must now be an alt costume in Smash.

Oh thank you for the lovely couch. It wouldn't work in my place but it would look perfect at the "Pawn Shop".
