    Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! See you in Sean's World.

    What an amazing space and fireplace. And what potential. Rebuild the chimney and restore the fireplace. You could put a woodstove in for cooking and heating. Bedroom and bathroom upstairs. An amazing studio to rent out. Good luck with this project. It is safe in your hands

      I can hear your mind thinking, Sean, all the way to Minnesota. And your final solution will be perfect...It's always nice to digest a bit over a week or two or three before the final plan is attempted, then with adaptations along the way, according to need, pocketbook, supplies, etc.
      Perfection takes time, but in the end it comes together. It is with brains like yours that gorgeous homes will last forever and be the envy of
      all!

    The end cottage has a truly medieval atmosphere, it's amazing & fascinating! Just an idea & not trying to teach Grandma to suck eggs (lol), as you're the expert: would it be worth considering putting a log burner in the fireplace of the end cottage rather than having to rebuild a complete stone chimney? It would look & feel just as cosy.

    • @Seans_World
      @Seans_World  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Either way it will have a log burner with a flue pipe double lined if l don't build the stone work back up

      You will get a better return on your money in the end unit if it were a rental. Anew workshop would accommodate newer type tools to build or renovate for as long as you like. I'd prefer a chimney and wood heater/ stove. Keep the age showing a bit in there.

    When you tired the end courage, i noticed that vertical timber in the attic that looks like it's leaning. I think it looks like it's come away from the ridge timber and is only supported by the beam it sits on and the cross piece that it's leaning against. I think you should take a closer look at it.
    What a shame the chimney has been entirely removed. Those big old stones are gorgeous. What an ancient feeling property!

    Out of all the spaces you have shown us this one is amazing! I can see so much potential for it!

    If is is a very fragile wall, then the best thing to do is take it down in a controlled manner until you reach a point where it it less fragile, then rebuild it as it needs to be. Otherwise it sounds very much like papering over the cracks though in this case boarding them over and covering them up.
    When looking at buildings like this, we have to remember that they have been through a number of changes in fortune. I suspect that some of the stones came from other, even older and possibly once grander buildings, were built as habitable places, some hundreds of years back and then tumbled down the building peck order to become rude storage areas, stripped of such features as fireplaces and any other 'fine' (for their time) features, that could be used elsewhere.

    I reckon those big stones were pinched from an earlier building. Check the history?

    What are your plans for the cottages Sean - are they for family members, or would they be for holiday rentals, or long term lets?
    I’d sign up for a couple of weeks in that beautiful part of France, if it was available 👌
    And I have no doubt that if they were available on any of the usual holiday rental sites, that they’d be quickly snapped up - what a beautiful part of the world you live in ❤
