    I tell the new drivers I meet out here that we all started out as rookies. Take your time and use your head and don’t be afraid to ask for help in tight spots. I’m always willing to help out when asked. In my opinion, the schools only teach you how to pass the test. The road teaches you how to be a truck driver.

      I just started recently and someone left the trailer too low and the landing gear wasn’t working properly so I ask a older driver and he’s like use the airbags on the truck got that done so much easier just had to ask for help and most the time people are willing to help. Just need to be able to ask first 😂.

      I guess it depends on the school. Don’t you have to have over a hundred driving hours on the school to graduate. I learned how to drive, only at school… maybe I’m interpreting different, but my school taught us, and with Experience on The road, much 🦯

      A had a good teacher when I learned to drive a truck. He said to drive in a way that you’re not in the way. That doesn’t necessarily mean to drive faster but if you’re on a 3 lane or more road, keep to the right because the left lane is the passing lane and you could be blocking it. Even if you’re driving faster. And I’m saying the speed limit or even a little over. The general rule is keep right except to pass. Some states have signs that say that or a variation of that but that is actually one of the rules of the road. Stay out of the way.

    21 tips for new truck drivers
    1. Understand that initial earnings might be modest.
    2. Consider gaining 1-3 years of experience for better-paying opportunities.
    3. While experience counts, don't anticipate extra pay based solely on seniority.
    4. Be wary of "free" CDL training; it often entails hidden costs.
    5. Expect less desirable loads or routes as a newcomer.
    6. Despite limited experience, it's possible to land a well-paying job post-CDL school.
    7. A lucrative CDL job could yield around $1,100 weekly for rookies.
    8. Avoid comparing your progress to that of other drivers.
    9. Embrace the significant learning curve; continuous learning is integral to trucking.
    10. Accept that mistakes are part of the learning process.
    11. Mastering truck driving takes time and practice.
    12. Minimize load rejections whenever possible.
    13. New drivers may encounter subpar equipment; speak up about concerns.
    14. Maintain a clean, organized truck to project professionalism.
    15. Prioritize obtaining proper training.
    16. Ensure your loved ones support your career choice as a trucker.
    17. Stay focused on your career objectives.
    18. Recognize that trucking isn't just about the paycheck; consider the effort required to earn it.
    19. Seek out experienced drivers as mentors to learn from their experiences.
    20. Take your time, ask questions, and learn from others.
    21. Remember, it gets easier with experience.

    The guy that says "i been doing this for 30 years!" Is the guy that thinks hes learned everytging.
    My first job i wrecked the front end of a company truck in the trailer lot. And 2 days later i turned to quick and hit my trailer on a barricade. I got put back into training i felt so stupid and extremely bad i was so close to just calling it quits regretting the decision i had taken to become a driver. The driver i got placed with told honestly saved me from that. He saw i was struggling and he told me.. hus 2nd day on the job he crushed a pickup truck turning out of the yard.he wasnt gonna show up the next day but the fleet owner came up to him and asked him you gonna be back tommorow? He alwaus used to say he could write a full book with the mistKes he made his first year and by that time he had been on the road 20 years and had owned 2 trucks of his own. He told me dont feel bad. Be safe and learn from your screwups... that man saved my career and with that i pass on that little nugget of advice to any new drivers struggling. Be safe keep on trucking

    I started driving Truck in the 60s. You didn't need a CDL in those days just a chauffer's license. A friend that owned two trucks hired me to haul swinging beef one way and return with produce. He just threw the keys at me and told me where and when I had to be there. I got in the truck and immediately noticed two transmission sticks. I got out and told him I didn't know what the hell to do with two sticks. I went for a short ride with him showing me how to use the two sticks and he got out and told me I would figure it out. It took 2-300 miles to get acquainted and that was my introduction to trucking. The first time out I was gone for 26 days. 82 years old now. I drove truck most of my life and finally retired with a teamster's pension. I watched trucking go downhill starting in the 80s when Reagan got elected. I can remember when it was a great job with good pay, and I loved it. Oh well, the good old days. Be safe out there and good luck.

I gained employment in December 2020 with a Russian flatbed company out of Illinois. This time last year I was making $126 a week on unemployment to $2500-$3000 a week now. I started with 26% gross of each load. I have received two raises since starting.I love what I do. I get out, get dirty, and get it done. Keep doing what you are doing brother. Thank you. If you are looking to get your Class-A CDL, Amazon will pay for your school and expect no commitment on the back end. I know a lot of drivers who have gotten their CDL through Amazon and immediately jumped ship to another company. The only downside is, Amazon-paid CDL training only gets you Automatic (no Manual Transmission restriction). But if you want to get your CDL and not have to pay for it, Amazon is a way to go. In addition, all Amazon CDL driving is local (short-haul exemption), meaning you get to go home at night because you started and ended your shift at the same location. Another downside is that you will not be exclusively driving OTR; as a member of the Transportation team you'll also be tasked with driving Hostler in the yard and manning the guard shack from time to time. But if you're looking for local driving with no experience and want to get your CDL, Amazon is an option. Just putting it out there.

    • @bretwalker2295
      @bretwalker2295 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      UPDATE: I forgot that Amazon also offers CDL training through Career Choice, so you don't even have to drive for Amazon, and if you get your CDL through Career Choice (they pay for the training 100%) you also have the option to get the Manual transmission endorsement. Again, there is no obligation on the back-end. Once you get your CDL you are free to go to another company and drive. They've done it this way for as long as I've been with the company (8 years).

      @@andresmurillo1454 You can either go through Career Choice (in which case you will go on your own time but they will pay for it... the upside is you can get your Manual Trans endorsement) or apply to TOM Team as a Transportation Associate, in which case they will send you for training and pay you while you are in training. But you will get a Manual Trans restriction on your license and only be able to drive Automatic Transmission. Just FYI. Driving skills on point. Sometimes they throw me into a single screw manual 6 speed and that thing can hardly start moving when the 48ft trailer is full, even worse on even a small hill. You have a lot of knowledge and don't mind sharing what you have learned. Alot of people in whatever profession they are in, are so reluctant to help others in their professions especially if they are newbies on the job. Everybody needs a helping hand starting out, you may be the best qualified but each job has a routine and set way to do things so if someone needs help, help them out until they are familiar with the routine. I will share your videos because they are helpful and interesting,i'm glad i came across them.

    Thank you for all the great info! Point 18 was especially helpful to me. Ive had my CDL for 8 months and the first job I landed is paying really well. I'm a local delivery driver for Pepsi and my take home is $1,000 - $1,200 per week. I hate this job because we have to stock the product which involves a lot of heavy lifting all day long. I'm home every day by 4pm the latest and off on the weekends, but I get so tired that I do not feel like doing anything on my time off. I decided to go OTR like I originally wanted to. Going to have to take a big pay cut I'm sure, but at least I'll be doing what I like.

    • @boycottbigtech
      @boycottbigtech ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think you have to take a pay cut if you go OTR. I’ve been OTR the whole time since CDL school (7 months), and I’ve done a lot of research and asking around. The figures you mentioned are absolutely average out here, even for new drivers. Go for it!

    • @TheArmenianTrucker
      @TheArmenianTrucker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boycottbigtech You're absolutely right. I've been watching a lot more videos since then. I've found drivers who make about the same and even more than what I am making with Pepsi now, without all the intensive labor. One common factor I noticed with drivers who are complaining about low pay, is those drivers also complain about home time. I think in trucking, you can not expect guaranteed and on time home time if you want to make good money. You have to be out there driving and I am more than willing to stay out for weeks. This week is my last one with Pepsi and Monday I start my orientation with Schneider. I did six months with Pepsi.

    Been thinking about this for 6 months now. But I’m a created of habit. Plus I’m about to be 36 (age isn’t a concern) I’m just comfortable but sick and tired of the hospitality field. Sick of people in my face. Sick of people whining about trivial things. Just enjoy yourself.
    It’s appealing to me, thinking I could just be on the road seeing new states constantly. Maybe even enjoying not having an apartment or house even. Just totally bank roll myself for 5-10 years. Then start fresh somewhere. Maybe even open my own bar or something.
    I do have a lot of concerns that are keeping me from pulling the trigger.
    Pay and pay structure is definitely one of them.
    I don’t want to be working 60-80 hours a week making 800$ a week.
    I currently work maybe 28-35 hours and on average make a decent amount more than that.
    I can live on 1000$ a week, another reason it’s appealing no kids no wife or anything. So I don’t have anything tying me down.
    Idk this is a pretty big interest of mine.
    Just something entirely different

    Been driving many years now. This guy has a lot of good info! A few things he didn't touch on is how this profession affects your home life. If you're a youngster early twenties or older guy with grown kids then there's no problem. But if you're a family guy that values your family time then OTR work is not for you. Because you will only see your family several days a month. If you could find a local gig then that will be your best option. However to really learn how to drive the truck you need at least a year or two out on the road. It's safer because there is less traffic then driving in a local urban job.
    Also if you're single then it's much more difficult to find and maintain a steady relationship if you are OTR. Your woman or man are home alone for days or weeks, enough said. If you have a relationship that you cherish, then stay local .
    If you're a player, then okay. But a lot of times you're busy and you may be too tired or not in an urban area to go clubbing. So a social life is very limited.
    Exercise!!! Many TA truck stops have exercise equipment that no one uses, go use them or at least run around your truck stop! Go to Walmart and eat healthily!! Don't eat fast food!!! You will expand! Again, you will EXPAND!!
    The harder thing is the pay. you'll probably want to stick to larger companies because about 70% of the smaller companies either won't pay you or they won't pay you everything. Plus they like to illegally misclassify you as an "independent contractor "with a 1099. The only way they can do that is if you have a truck. Again, the only way they can do that is if you OWN a truck.
    Also, I see a lot of drivers take half their house OTR but don't do that unless you don't like your things. They will let you know and not so subtle ways that the truck is theirs. Also when you're off , another driver might use it, mechanics get into it, etc. Only take the minimal things that you need and take any items like electronic devices, etc, home with you when you're off.
    Finally, just know that this is not just a profession but it's basically a lifestyle particularly if you are OTR.
    I could probably write a book, But these are a few basics. Good luck!🙏✝️
