I've met Marcus Lutrell and got a photo with him along with an autographed copy of his book Lone Survivor (to this day the most amazing, heart wrenching story I've ever read). He was signing autographs at a Houston Astros game in 2010 at the time. To this day, it is the most "star struck" I've ever been.
I've also been in touch with Michael Murphy's father through Facebook where I sent my condolences as well as my thanks for his sons service to our nation. He responded with the following to me:
"Thank you for your kind comments. It has been the kindnesses of strangers who honor Michael's service and sacrifice that have given the family the strength to endure and continue on after this terrible tragedy which has befallen us. Thank you for remembering my "buddy boy"."
Never forget these were real men with real families and worthy of respect and remembrance.

I saw Michael P Murphy's funeral. I was walking from my mom's home in Patchogue, NY that day; she lived near the church. The entire street was closed down and military personnel were all over the place. I thanked a guy for his service and he stared at me and said, "No, thank you." America's toughest men were shedding tears up and down the street. Murphy grew up in Patchogue and now the local US Post Office bears his name and so does the high school campus from which he graduated. There are buildings in Sayville honoring him as well. I dont recommend watching but the actual footage from the taliban was released of their deaths. And the director had a meeting with some of their parents to look at their bedrooms and autopsy reports, I think dannys dad wanted to show the movie producers the damage that was done to his son and told them that that had to show exactly what was done to him or they wouldn't release the movie. Also Axe more than likely survived multiple days alone in those mountains. They story is that he was either blinded in both eyes or disoriented and he walked miles alone on the mountain and was found against a tree way far away from the fight. it took the marines or rangers 10 days to find his body that's how far he was. The footage of the helicopter being shot down is also on youtube, its not graphic so you can watch. Everyone died in that helicopter i think 32 people, some of them part of the most elite special forces members from Gold Squadron of Seal team 6, the most deaths in one day of any special operations team. I will say there is some controversy over Marcus's story but I haven't heard a convincing true story. What I do know is that this seal team of 4 recon members was not supposed to do this mission in the first place. Its was supposed to be a larger group of marines to raid the village.

There’s details on how fucked this mission was from the start. Awful events, and it’s good that one SEAL was able to make it home.
Some examples of how the mission was messed up.
The Marines of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, who had planned OP RED WINGS, were going after a relatively low level target named Ahmed Shaw, as their previous operations, and the unit they'd replaced, had nabbed all the known high and medium value targets successfully.
Unfortunately, they were not part of a Marine Air Ground Task Force, and didn't possess organic lift assets needed to conduct it. So they asked for helo support from 160th SOAR (the famed Night Stalkers) who were assigned to Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan (CJSOTF-A). The region SOTF command was run by SEALs who only agreed as long as they were to run the recon, and act as the main effort assault element to conduct the air assault raid against the target buildings thought to house the HVTs, while the rest of the Marine infantry company tasked with supporting missions, specifically the outer cordon. Because they had no options, and they wanted the mission to go ahead to nab the bad guy, the Marines agreed. This is not uncommon, its actually the norm. SOCOM are often on the lookout for good missions and they often get them from "poaching" intel or fully developed ops from conventional units.
Per the planning of Red Wings, the recon element was was going to be inserting the day before on the high ground nearby to three named areas of interest (NAI) that were supposed to be under observation to spot the targets. They were supposed to not only confirm the presence of Shaw, but also provide additional intel. 2/3 had planned to conduct the recon using a Scout Sniper six man team, headed by a very experienced team leader. They had worked in that area often before, knew the relative ground, knew the limitations of radios, etc. Their plan was to get helo lifted miles away from the objective, land, then infiltrate by foot.
When the SEALs poached the recon mission, the new recon element was a four man team who had never worked recon in Afghanistan before, weren't trained in recon, only one individual ever having deployed to a combat zone before. They ignored advice to bring more powerful radios, as the Marines knew from experience that the one the SEALs brought couldn't push out far enough, it didn't have enough power. Additionally, the SEAL recon team didn't have a Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency (PACE) plan for comms, only having the weak MBITR and a sat phone as backup. Neither were adequate, and they were warned.
More so, their plan was significantly flawed. Not wanting to spent the time and energy walking to the objective, they decided to get helo inserted a few hundred meters away. They attempted to mitigate the risk of landing near directly on the Observation Point (OP) by having numerous false insertions done all over the valley area over the previous week, to keep the locals guessing, which only ended up tipping them off that an operation was in the works. But in recon, its an outright sin to ever airlift onto the OP. Every measure must be taken to keep it hidden, to keep the presence of the recon team hidden.
After they fast roped down on the landing zone, per norm, the fast ropes were disconnected from the helicopter, but the SEAL recon team did not hide them, they left them in the open. Locals, sent out when they'd heard the choppers, found them pretty quickly, and using their own comms, reported it back. At that time the SEAL team had made it to the high ground and beyond, were trying to find a good OP to overwatch the NAIs, which proved difficult as the position they initially chose at night proved poor when light came at dawn. After daybreak they moved OPs.
The locals, knowing ISAF rules of engagement, sent up some unarmed individuals, with radios, with some sheep, into the hills to scout them out. This is a common TTP in COIN ops to find snipers and recon element hide sites. In Iraq, they'd sent kids or unarmed adults to check on certain buildings, knowing we wouldn't kill them if we found them. If they found us, they'd report back. It worked during Red Wings. The SEAL recon team was spotted. Compromised, they detained the sheepherders.
At that point the operation was blown. They have just been soft compromised, though without knowing it they'd also been hard compromised as those herders were part of a deliberate counter-recon element so Shaw and the enemy fighters in the village knew they'd been caught when they didn't report back. But because the SEAL recon team never established a formal plan for being compromised they had to make the decision on the spot of what to do. Instead of executing the actions of a pre-made drill for compromise, (depending on the story version) they got into a debate about what to do and even possibly held a vote. Confusion was also on what to do with the detainees. AT NO TIME WAS KILLING THEM ACTUALLY A LEGAL OPTION. Or realistic. The easiest thing to do would have been to gag them and flex cuff them to a tree. Instead they let them go (where they instantly ran off to warn everyone), while the SEALs picked up and moved, but not far.
So after being compromised, the SEALs moved to high ground to make the call on their radio to alert the command element what had happened. Note, they didn't vacate the area, they moved maybe a hundred meters away from where they'd been spotted. Meanwhile, their comms weren't working, so the radio traffic was broken taking far longer than it should have without any real benefit of transmitting information.
Meanwhile, the local enemy, realistically numbering about 12 fighters, having been briefed by the returning herders on the location of the SEALs, their size, their weapons, created a plan, climbed the hills to reach a position where they could ambush the infidels on their way back up to the high ground which was on the way back to the LZ (which they sent RPG gunners to overwatch in case a helicopter showed up).
Finally, the SEAL recon team moving back toward the high ground through a draw (the NE Gulch), but got ambushed at relatively close range by roughly a squad sized element in strength, with machine guns. Possibly RPG and mortar, though in the video the insurgents made I never saw evidence of explosive weaponry.
The fight was brief, and the SEALs that weren't hit immediately tried to break contact downhill. Luttrell effectively fell down the mountain, while the patrol leader, Mike Murphy, made a call on the sat phone before dying. The other two died during this time too. They didn't kill any of the locals, it was an entirely one sided fight.
The Quick Reaction Force 10 SEALs in a 160th SOAR Chinook, escorted by two Apaches. The SEAL mission commander aboard the Chinook ordered the pilots to reach the LZ ASAP, and because the Chinook flies faster than the Apaches they arrived first. Because the Apaches weren't present, despite them having the thermal optics that would have been able to visually clear the landing zone, and the weaponry to physically clear it, the Chinook flared and started its landing, in broad daylight, under the observation of RPG gunner stationed there, and was targeted and hit, crashing, killing all onboard
All that can be found in a book called “victory point operation red wing and whalers.” By Ed Darack

I highly recommend reading the book Lone Survivor. The film is a very accurate depiction of the sheer chaos and brutality the team endured because Marcus Luttrell was on set and insisted that his brothers be portrayed accurately and be honored for their courage. They took poetic license with the things Marcus endured, because, by the book, he was much more injured and struggled much harder. Both of his legs were broken and he dragged himself for miles to get out of there.

The movie didn't do justice on how bad Marcus was injured. When he walked to that source of water with a broken leg he actually crawled inch by inch miles because of a broken back. Marcus's twin identical brother who is also a Seal when the family got news was the only one who could feel that Marcus was still alive (That identical twin brother Psyche). When Marcus was going through physical therapy he got a service dog and named her Dasy. D for Dietz, A for Axe, S for Southern boy (Marcus, Texas) and Y for Yankee (Mike Murphy, New York). Sadly some strangers shot his dog for no reason and Marcus got into a car pursuit with them, called the cops and said "you better get these guys before I do" while chasing them in his truck with 2 9mm M9 Barettas. This and American Sniper is one of my all time favorite movies.

I will mention that during the comms checks they mentioned in the movie that they reached certain objectives. Those Objectives are called "Phase Lines'". Phase lines are basically lines on a map that are made so once they are crossed they will then proceed with a radio check and/or the next "Phase" of the operation. This was my first ever video of you guys. Hoping to see more war movies in the near future from you all and really enjoyed your raw reaction to such a hard emotional movie like this one. Hope all is well. IGY6 to all my Marine Brothers out there.

Don't hold this movie to a high regard. Marcus fabricated and embellished a lot of what happened and this movie among others were created with assistance of the united states military which has an obvious agenda. I suggest watching Generation Kill (which you would like, if I assumed correctly that your a marine, a Marine plays himself, and all of the characters in the film are based on real marines who were there during the filming.) Das Boot, Come and See, The City of Life and Death, and Platoon.
American Sniper and Lone Survivor unfortunately are based on people who have embellished and or lied about their stories for their own reasons. I assume Marcus out of guilt, and Chris out of egoism.

I can tell you that watching this made me realize I have nothing to complain about, no matter how bad of a day I am having.... I'm not getting shot at, I'm not having to jump off cliffs to stay alive, I'm not relying on strangers to survive....

Based on a true story, pretty gory, but brilliant movie. I was in the British Army in 1989, age 17, and broke my neck in training 5 months later, disabled but still walking, and I saw the start of the Gulf was, as well as other wars in Afghanistan on tv, and even though these are American soldiers, I still class them as brothers even though I never met or served with them, if I never broke my neck, I would have been doing the exact same thing as them, protecting their own country.

Theart at the beginning is BUD/S. Basic Underwater Demolition /DEAL training. A lot of that footage is actually from documentaries about how US navy Sailors who volunteer for the SEALS are trained.
The really intense footage of the training is from He'll Week. A part of BUD/S designed to test the prospective DEALs determibation, stamina , and will power. They spend 5 and half days running around doing e physical and mental training with very little sleep , while constantly wet from having to jump into the freezing Pacific ocean and also covered in sand . They do this in small teams called boat crews and each boat crew has to carry a inflatable boat and the paddles for between every training location , they also use the boats in many of the exercises.
SEAL training often we see extremely talented athletes fall while lesser but more determined men pass because while they may not have the athletic talents that have the determination and grit to power through the hardships of the training which is exactly what the a navy wants

18:48 he wasn’t thanking them , the old man /sheep hearder was Taliban and his words translate to “you’ll be dead by sundown”. A US Green Beret was on Savage Actuals channel , he served 14 years in Special Operations in Afghanistan speaking several dialects, Danny was learning key words for his time in Afghanistan and told Marcus Lutrell on their hike out that he was sure he heard the words for “death” “you” and “Sundown”, and that it confirmed he was either Taliban or a Taliban sympathizer who would pass the message on to Hamad. Marcus wrote that the look on Danny’s face after those words were spoken still haunts him. Danny was well aware of the comms issue , that they were nowhere near the recon point command assumed they were in and the speed the Taliban moves carrying no gear or packs and knowing their land in and out he saw a genuine look of “were in trouble” Marcus also stated he was pushing to release them and that he made sure his character displayed this, not to make himself look good to viewers of the film, he demanded it be clear because he feels responsible to an extent for his 3 brothers lives and the Quick Reaction Force shot down. He says he made the “right” choice in the rules of war, they were unarmed and can’t be killed but he says that by the books option in hind site was wrong. Armed or not the radio was for Taliban comms and his belief of black and white resulted in the deaths of the largest US Special Operations loss of life in Special Operations history. The movie showing his black and white view on such a deadly scenario is an admittance of his guilt and clearly wrong decision. Bytheway Marcus is in the movie in several scenes.

Marcus' twin brother Morgan is a SEAL as well, there was a vietnam veteran in their home town that Marcus called the "town psychopath" all the kids that wanted to join the military would go to him during the summer and he would train them so they would be stronger going in he trained Marcus and his Brother as well as a couple other seals and several Army Rangers.

Taliban, AQ, ISIS... All really bad dudes. Veterans will talk about how they would go to houses and find the patriarch of the family nailed to the wall with his eyelids cut off and his family mutilated on the floor in front of him. Sons are tortured to d3ath and wives and daughters are r&%ed to d3ath in front of him and THEN they put a bullet in him. Just a different world over there. A much more brutal one. Happened a lot during the fall of Afghanistan too. Any Interpreters or Afghan Commandos that worked closely with the Americans had to either escape the country or suffer that kind of a fate along with their family. That's why so many American Veterans, Special Operations Soldiers in particular, were working so hard to get their people out of there before the Military withdrew. Lot of good Afghan people suffered some pretty horrible and gruesome ends at the hands of those monsters.
