    I am so impressed with your review! You know more about the Mansons than most Americans. I was 16 when all that happened. I remember it all pretty well. You did a really good job. The first date isn't important, but when it switches to August, it is the night of the Manson murders. The narration was just to let you know what happened the night of the murders. BTW, Margo was just a place setting to get people to focus on what the Mansons were about. She only had a few lines. It wasn't necessary. There are a lot of hints but quite a few Americans who have watched this have no clue. The tv shows were all real. The one he did a pilot for was Lancer, and it was real. the FBI was also real. This is one of my very favorite movies. Go back and watch past the credits. There is another very funny scene with Rick Dalton.

    believe it or not, im not the same from the moment i exit the theater after watching it.. Its hard to explain, but the creators were on track with something we still cannot comprehend as a species. One more thing, i think its very important how you visualize our current world, if you''re materialist, you're doomed.

    In the book, I think Toranaga admits it on the last page, or near as dammit. And I was like, "I knew it!" Yeah, the old man was a dream within a dream. I was a little confused too at first, which I think is intentional. On rewatching it, you realise each old man scene is when Anjin is unconscious or in a moment of great stress. The line about making him laugh is a tremendous point that cuts through the entire show, and it makes you watch it in a different light. As others have said, great reaction. You two are up there with my favourites. Will definitely be looking out for what you're doing next.

    I think that short scene with Yabushige on the cliff is the first, and only, time we see the true Toranaga in the series. He has reached his goal and there is no witness to his words (at least not one leaving that cliff). Toranaga played everyone from the opening episode.

    “Why tell a dead man the future?” is a callback to episode 1 when Yabushige said the same thing to Omi when talking about Blackthorne's ship. In saying the line Toranaga revealed that he had a spy reporting on Yabushige's moves and conversations. Maybe it was Omi himself. Or maybe it was the servant guy you see in the background almost every relevant scene. To me as a viewer, Yabushige turning his head to look at Toranaga just before having his head cut off seems like he's just made that connection, and Toranaga smiling back is him saying "yea bitch... i knew everything!"

    • @user-zr8xu4jn4b
      @user-zr8xu4jn4b 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow, what a sharp insight! I was getting frustrated with the misconception that Omi was the spy monitoring Yabushige. The real spy is actually the young attendant who takes care of Yabushige. He appears in nearly every key scene. Realizing this and re-watching the episodes make the director's intentional framing even more intriguing, don’t you think?

    • @CoyzyMovieNight

    I enjoyed watching your reaction to the series and your interest and appreciation for Japanese culture. I think one of the many things that this series does so well is to show the Japanese mindset. Compared to the West, Japanese culture places more emphasis on reflecting on how your words and your actions might impact those around you. Part of the way this social harmony is maintained is through measuring your speech and not always revealing your true thoughts and intentions. Honne (本音), are one's true thoughts and feeling and these are usually kept private and only discussed or revealed to family and close confidants. Tatemae (建前) is the public version you present in order to keep the harmony and seem agreeable. For me, as a Westerner, this was by far the hardest thing to come to terms with while living in Japan. More than the language barrier, more than race, wrapping my head around the concept of Honne vs. tatemae is what I struggled with the most. I was raised that speaking honestly and directly was the best course of behaviour so moving to a society where direct speech is often seen as rude or insensitive really threw me for a loop. Even though I'd read of tatemae, it was just such an alien concept to me that I still often fail to pick up on it's use when speaking with a Japanese person in the moment and it's not until well after when I've had a chance to reflect on our exchange that I realize I'd missed the cues. Mariko's explanation of the 8-fold fence and the exchange between Toranaga and Yabushige do a wonderful job of demonstrating the practice. Seeing the Anjin's transformation to the point where he begins to understand the culture at an almost instinctual level and is willing to sacrifice his life in order to preserve the harmony of the village was very cool. I loved the scene in the boat with Fuji. Her character really suffered a lot through the series with the loss of her husband, her child, and her grandfather. The entire cast did a stellar job but the actress who portrayed Fuji was a stand out for me. Her facial expressions through the series conveyed so much. I hope we can see more of her in the upcoming seasons. I also hope they film on location in Japan next time. The one thing that took me out of the series is that much of it was filmed close to where I live. "That's not Ajiro! That's Squamish, damn it!"

    • @ronweber1402
      @ronweber1402 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The problem is that it's hard to find untouched rustic landscapes in Japan whereas Squamish and Vancouver Island are replete with very Japan-like wilderness. So while it may take something away for us locals it only adds to the experience for others.

    Hey guys, I've followed all of your reactions to this brilliant show. Yours was one of the very best reactions to it, I don't think I've seen a more emotional response. This show delivered a real a gut punch, I'd read the book so knew what was coming unless they had decided to re-write everything and that punch still landed. As to show, it's just a stunning piece of art, it's like a poem and a painting rolled into one.
