A standard airbag in an economy car at that time is impressive
👋😂👍even power windows and antilock brakes!
I don’t think people realize how huge it was to have a drivers airbag, ABS, and the availability of 4wd minivan in 1991. Chrysler was on fire.
I had a '94. Probably the most boring vehicle I've ever owned. But it sat 6 full sized humans without being the length of a destroyer, and carried half an apartment's stuff when I pulled the seats.
Almost embarrassingly uncool, but beyond practical.
First vehicle I had was a ‘92 dodge Caravan... got it for $800 with 200K & pushed it to 355K miles until the engine finally gave out.. I’m surprised it lasted that long!
I am so happy PBS and Motorweek exist.
1991 was the year I started high school. It was a marvelous time to be that age. It seems like only a moment ago.
I was in the first grade when my profile Pic was taken. Soon after you started high school. My dad had a Chevy van and my mom had a late 70s Buick. Kinda miss that car. Dark Blue exterior with a white leather interior. Granted the seats were ripped to shreds but I liked it then and do now lol
I graduated in 91got my first summer 🌞🌞 job in which I enjoyed
@@user-db2ut4fo9g I am the third of four children in my family and my sibling just older than me graduated from high school in 1991 too!
That generation of Chrysler Minivans was great.
Wish it was early to middle 90s again. I enjoyed their cars & trucks from this era.
Makes me want to watch The Great Outdoors!
Jeep Grand Wagoneer for the WIN!!!
... or is it the spin cycle?
I remember in middle school in the early 00s my 70 year old teacher drove a Black Stealth turbo..she had gotten it new in 1991 to replace her old Datsun 280zx
Astounding that I would actually buy every one of these models from 1991 if they are sold today at the dealership. Absolute corruption that vehicles became so unreliable with electronics and not improving anything. Even gas mileage are marginally improved.
My dad bought a brand new 91 Dakota with the 5.2 liter 318 v8. That truck lasted forever, well over 300,000 miles! It was one cool truck.
Chrysler's seats were very comfortable and plush in those times.
What does “Chrysler” sell now except for Jeeps built on foreign platforms?
Jeeps on a Ram platform
No word on Eagle Premier/Dodge Monaco?
I was a freshman in high school when this episode aired. My family bought one of those Cherokee Sports - 2 doors, 5 speed manual w/ the 4.0L High Output straight 6. Fastest thing we ever owned at the time coming out of economy cars and 4-cyl pickups. Not the most reliable though. One particularly interesting failure was the clutch slave cylinder.
Better than the junk they got now
Facts
@@InternetDude You want a fact? Now they're all just rebadged Fiats.
@@pmafterdark Which isn't a bad thing but they're still junk all modern cars are junk. You can't even change a damn light bulb on em yourself no more.
@@user-sk1eh3pg6jAnd there it is very difficult to change her to Dodge Ram, who is in the image of Fiat Ducato🤓?!
My friend had one of those Shadows and he broke the window when we were at a club because he got drunk and we had his keys. I also remembering understeering the hell out of it into a curb and realigning his steering. Good times! 🙂
Spirit R/T, Stealth R/T and Talon TSI are all way better than any of the crossover junk they build now 😞
💯
Fantastic lineup for 91. A $7,000 economy car with airbags is unheard of. Even today thatd be a great value. And the spirit rt was a direct competitor to the Quad 442. Both of those cars were only around for 2 short years, but they made a massive impact on 4 cylinder tech. What an amazing time for cars at Chrysler. These days they have 0 cars, and 0 hope.
They built the Spirit RT to compete with the Taurus Sho, Not the Quad 442 or any of the Quad 4 models from GM at the time. The only reason Chrysler used the 224 HP, High output turbo four engine is because that is all they had at the time to compete with the SHO and it actually was slightly quicker in 0-60 acceleration than the SHO. Chrysler couldn't use any of their V6 engines because they were not DOHC.. I guess I'm trying to say that they weren't competing with the Quad 4s because the Spirit RTs engine blew any Quad 4 out of the water .
When vehicles were built better and were affordable, not like the very overpriced junk today.
My parents bought a 1991 Chrysler minivan in all white with the 3.3 litre V6. It was a nice minivan, I used it to go SCUBA diving to carry 4 people and all our dive gear. I dreamt of an Eagle Talon TSi but was in college and could not afford it. The good old days :)
The Woody will live forever
Oh man, that being in the bank, grocery, and department store with Mom in 91 music is awful but also not.
I miss that music now
From 80-83 I worked at a dealership that sold jeep. It didn't matter if you had the 360cu in or not they had absolutely no power but you talk about luxurious. Leather, thick shaggy carpet. All the horse farms was buying everyone of these that dealership could get
Quite a complete model line up. How far the great have fallen
All Chrysler is, a minivan company
I have never seen any vehicle that came with the 2.2 DOHC that came in the Spirit R/T, and I worked as a mechanic for 2 decades during the period of time that those would have still been around. I’ve worked on many, many Spirits and many of the SOHC 2.2/2.5, but I’ve never seen one of the DOHC 2.2s. 225hp would have been decent from a V8 during that time, practically unheard of from a 4cyl. 6.8 sec to 60 probably made it faster than the DSM that Chrysler also sold.
The Spirit R/T was a low-production trim only made for 1991 and 1992. Very rare. The 2.2L 4cyl. turbo made 224hp. For perspective, the 1991 Mustang GT 5.0L made 225hp. The Spirit R/T was a real sleeper. A comfortable and roomy car too.
The same engine was also put into A Dodge Daytona Iroc R/T. 0-60 mph in 6.7 secs with a top speed of 149 mph. I've seen numbers for the Spirit R/T doing 0-60 mph in 5.8 secs with a top speed of 141mph.
@@Snake-ms7sj it all depends on the launch in those cars
Seems like Chrysler was continuously on the verge of going bankrupt even with big sellers like their minivans and Jeeps.
It's been a things since I was in diapers. I'll be 39 on Saturday 😂
They've nearly gon bankruptcy a bunch of times.
But each of those times they had something to save them. It was affordable cars that people actually want. Doesn't look like they have much of that now
The Neon was right around the corner, as well as the redesigned trucks with the RAM front end. They always figured out a way to stick around a bit longer.
You reap what you sow.
I miss the early '90s
Boy has Chrysler fallen since this video was shot
Great lineup for 1991. I'd gladly take that Cherokee, Wagoneer, Spirit, Shadow, Laser over anything Stellantis sells in the U.S. today. I had a 1992 Acclaim (same as the Spirit), and a 1990 Sundance (same as the Shadow). Both were excellent cars. Thrifty to own, reliable, and very comfortable.
These were such impressive vehicles, although all that was missing were the Ram trucks, vans, and Ramcharger SUV, which got minor changes, including, on the full-size pickups and the Ramcharger, a new grille. Just saying.
I'll take a 91 Grand Wagoneer final edition in Hunter Green metallic, a 91 XJ with a 4.0/5MT and a 91 YJ Islander with a 4.0/5MT and a bikini top please.
1:35 Now that's a dated design for 1991. I'm sure that was the final model year.
Yes 1991 was the last year for the Grand Wagoneer.
@@Stressless2023 Also the last vehicle sold in the US with a carburetor. It was a dinosaur by 91 standards. Funnier still, despite being a luxury SUV, the AC system on them is non-integrated, much like the Jeep YJ. By the 70's, most vehicles especially luxury ones had moved over to integrated AC units. Not the SJ Wagoneer though. There's a fantastic article on Curbside Classic by Tom Halter that goes into detail on how the HVAC system on these works and AMC's attempt to make the system appear integrated, without it being so.
So simple design and less cupholders
225hp in a Spirit was wild 😂
I just started High School too! Those were the days and best cars suvs imo
Where is the Jeep Comanche?
🔥 Comanches ruled
Way better than the Stellantis junk we got now
1991 Chrysler Line Up
Jeez, the Stealth looks 5-7 years newer than anything else in the video.
I miss the dodge stealth & 3000 gt
I think Chrysler is spelt wrong, @Motorweek...
Oops. Thanks
It's the dumbing down of America. Lol 😆

Gimme that Plymouth Laser!
Wish it was 1991again
Very cool.
Loving the music :)
Even then these vehicles were unique.
0:32............the best gets even better!!!!! I still remember looking at one (a '91 Grand Voyager LE) at Fred F. Cain Chrysler/Plymouth in Wilmington, MA when we were shopping for our '91 Volkswagen Vanagon Carat. The Ultrashi...............er, I mean Ultradrive transmission is what ultimately scared us away. 1:31.............the very LAST vehicle built & sold here to still have a carburetor.
Everything shown is better than the crossover garbage people drive today
Gee, the day when you could buy a car for less than 5 figures. I guess salaries were also lower then too, maybe 2/3 of what they are now (not factoring in the global inflation we currently have as I would consider that to be a special case as with most periods of rapid inflation/recession relating to other events). But I'd buy one of these today new for under $10k. In fact, I'd buy 2 or 3 of them at an $8k price.
Not one mention of the Daytona?
The Stealth 😮😘

Sad ,look at Chrysler today 🙄🙄
this was depressing to watch
They were relatively good cars, all in all. Today, good luck finding something as easy to keep on the road.
