I've worked on a lot of Gibsons marked "Second", yet can't find what wasn't up to their standard of quality? I find it even more strange that they'll let other guitars go out with glariing-issues and yet no stamp. That one there looks like a keeper!
It is a factory second, it is stamped that way so that you cant claim warranty, and they dont have serial numbers. It could have had a finish flaw or possibly some fit problems, but they are usually playable or they go in the bin. There is a company on Ebay that sells Gibson seconds and freight damage with various problems some with all the parts but mostly they are incomplete.
I love these videos you make!!!! And very cool axe! You surprised me there at 1:16 with that Crescent wrench on the truss rod tool handle! Don't you have to be very careful about breaking the rod? I'm always afraid to torque much on them -- even only using y hand grip on the tool because I just don't have a good feel for how easy they will twist off. As a result I've never been too swift at correcting the necks of my instruments.
Dave the Viking! Carpal tunnel, it happens to people that have a Viking ancestry. Strange but true. The word Viking means a man who traveled overseas looking for fame and fortune. So's how's the raping and pillaging in Canada fairing? Great channel Dave. I'm an avid fan.
Hey there. I just picked up a 74 Gibson Howard Roberts. On the back of the headstock, just above the serial number is a number 2. Any idea what that means?
***** Ya that makes sense. It's a 42 year old guitar, that sounds great. Any blemish it had in 1974 is irrelevant today. Besides some cracks/checking in the paint, it looks almost perfect. I'm not a collector, I'm a player. haha Thanks again for the reply
in the 70s some gibsons were marked second just so they could sell them off cheaper and clear some inventory. Not the case with most seconds but there are a few out there. Sometimes it was something not so obvious as using a misgraded piece of wood for the fingerboard or having the neck angle out of spec. Seriously screwed up guitars went to the bandsaw.
@davey4557 based on some specific hand gestures you occasionally make in your videos i will make a guess what caused your your tendonitis and carpal tunnel :)
Great video Dave , beautiful guitar too. I am learning so much by watching your videos
Keep em coming.... ROCK ON !!
One of my favourite guitars!!
Simply amazing the prices asked for these vintage jazz boxes. MOT mother of toilet seat) and plywood formed top and back,
but they sound very good.

I could watch him checking frets with the callipers all day long!
I have a ‘second’ Gibson 175D as well. And have been wondering what the second stamp was?

sick guitar!!! lucky dave, now you got a real guitar to work on!!
Your camera work is excellent! What kind of camera is that?
@jo fa, Scotty Moore played a Super 400... the top of the line Gibson electric, this is the lower priced (but still very nice) ES-175D.

it was either a factory blemish or bought by a worker right from the factory
What a nice log guitar, I wonder how old
@davey4557 Thanks Dave !! I like the wall hangings in this one better ;) ...lol...keep up the good work !
I notice that the end of the fret board is flat not fancy unlike like on Scotty. Moore's '63
might have mentioned this in the past, but ES meant "Electric Spanish"
@guitarslim56 yup I figured it out..lol..I kept looking for the hot water tank !
That Gibson sure is purty...
"nice wood....veeery nice wood!"
I'm afraid that should actually be:
"nice PLYwood.....veeery nice PLYwood"
:-)
Cheers for the vid
WHOOHOO!!!
sweet !!
nice beautifully aged guitar !!!
Nice old guitar.
Crazy glue and baking soda, gotta try it
why was it sent to you anyway? Start messing with action and maybe Steve Howe might reconsider. I'll deal with mine thanks

Did you move your bench out of the basement ???
nice guitar, but I dont think a "second" is worth as much as one that isnt.

@chrisdah9 whats the companys name?
Gibson sold seconds from the factory. I have only seen one in 60+ years of hunting out the old stuff.
Nice wood....That's what she said...lol
I meant old, autocorrect sux
wa ha how!
