I am sure that not even the great Norman Harris, world expert on antique guitars, would notice the repair of this guitar. You are not only an artist in the repair of musical instruments, you are a magician. Congratulations from Mexico City.
This video is very satisfying to watch Doug. You have a very creative and clever way of coming up with solutions like your espresso machine, your PVC bending / steaming tube, and using veneer in layers. That guitar has a gorgeous coffee burst and you made it look like it just came from Gibson. Very nice job.
Another beautiful repair. I'm glad the customer convinced you to do the repair. I love the ingenuity of guitarists and guitar repairmen to make something wonderful through the power of their skills and inspiration. Thanks
I thought I had seen every guitar repair video on TH-cam but for some reason I just came across this, and it is the most impressive of them all! Subscribed. 👍
I am totally blown away with the way you found a solution to a seemingly impossible repair. You sir are a true artist!! You've got yourself a new subscriber. Looking forward to learning from a Master!!
I taught my apprentices that a repair or a patch can only ever be exactly that because there's no budget in place, so do your best and forget perfection. Excellent job here.
Sir, that repair was remarkable! It's amazing to me that somebody can even poses the skills you have to make a personalized guitar stock again! I hope to see more soon!
I was going to recommend a psychiatrist to attempt this but you already knew that. More than impressive and thank you for letting us tag along. I ran into this and it piqued my interest in how you were going to rebuild the corner especially. More than nicely done with good decisions on a nice guitar and make it a player again that restores it to what it started out while retaining its vintage. Thanks again, Fred
As a former session musician and these days a luthier myself, I have seen and repaired many horror story guitars over the years - rarely have I seen such a spot on resurrection of so badly maimed an instrument as this! What were they thinking? Needless to say, I subscribed immediately!
Wow! Doug, that was remarkable. Please consider investing in a tripod/clamp or something to hold the camera now and again. That cut on the band saw had my heart racing!! 😂 Really nice work my good man. God bless you dearly!!
Bravo! My man! Bravo! I really enjoy your watching you work!!! I just watched your PRS headstock repair and this one , I hope you make more videos soon!!! G-d bless you with many more years, I really enjoy your work!!
Amazing work. I watch a lot of guitar repair videos here and I don't remember any as impressive as this one. I would have thought this 330 was a lost cause. Many thanks for sharing.
Glad that TH-cam recommended this video. I've now also watch your PRS headstock rebuild as well, and your skills are incredible. Looking forward to the next video!
Great job! It's a miracle. You have golden hands. Thank you so much for the opportunity to learn from you.I will be glad to see many more similar videos.
Wow! Wow! Wow! Fascinating! I can't even believe how you were able to resurrect this guitar to its original glory. You are gifted my friend. I know vintage car collectors will spend exorbitant amounts of moneys for their projects but I always wonder what the cost would be on a project like this? Anyway keep up the great work.
I was with ya up until painting the back solid black. I feel like with a piece of maple with similar enough grain would’ve filled and stained quite nicely. The woodworking on repairing the missing horn is incredible though. Excellent work
Stupid me - I would've used a paper thin veneer over the back to cover the repair. I usually do mine so that they are flawless. This is a vintage instrument and it needs the vintage approach to being solid again. I do realise that these techniques are what everyone that understands guitar repair and restoration use but I would've done the backside justice so it would never be known. Thank you for sharing this with us. It's great to see that this hasn't died as so many artisanal things of this nature have.
Awesome job restoring this Vintage 330. I'm surprised that the owner didn't request to fix the front P90 route. Assuming keeping a humbucker there? I had a 63 that was routed for both Humbuckers, although it had early Pat. Pend. Phillips screw version, I had my guy put it back to P90 routes. I sold the Buckers which paid for repair and helped pay for 50's p90's
My first good guitar was a 330 and I also had a nice Cherry finish one. I totally love these guitars so I was truly shocked to see what somebody had done to the shape of the instrument! Why? You did a fantastic resto job on it BTW! I think way back the 330 was not highly valued and so were often treated badly but these days everyone knows how good they are! And if it was good enough for Grant Green...
Gibson uses veneer and lots of it...Gibson's semi-hollowbodies like the ES-335 and ES-339 have tops and backs constructed of layers (either 3 or 4) of maple veneer. My understanding is that the veneers are assembled in successive cross-grain layers with the top layer having its grain longitudinal to the length of the guitar. The tops and backs are approximately 1/4" in thickness after layup.
Fantastic restoration Doug. If I could offer some advice about the video, we could really use a complete view of the instrument both before and after the repair.
Incredible. Noticed the last video you posted before this one was like 6 years ago. Hope you begin posting more! Would love to see more of this. Subscribed.
Probably the best repair I have ever seen. Genius.
I don't know about genius. But I'll take it! LOL! Thanks :)
This is just an incredible resurrection of a hopelessly spoiled guitar! Second life for this Gibson! Great job! 👍👍👍
Thank you very much!
Thanks!

Would be great to see & hear this guitar in its re-composed form, if the owner was to post a video- I'd love to see that!

@@EvLoutonian Yes. I did ask him about it. I've had enough interest in the video that I could do a revisit. Plus I want to remix it anyway.
That is a very expensive restoration! Total admiration ❤, simply over and above😊

Your narration reminds me of Dick Proeneke, my favorite show as a kid 😂 Incredible work. Can’t imagine trying to blend an entire cutaway back in

The woodworking on repairing the missing horn is incredible though. Excellent work
It's what the customer wanted. He didn't want to be reminded of his past indiscretions as a younger man.
Wow! Amazing craftsmanship! Congrats!
Thank you kindly! I really enjoyed this one!

Indeed it did require a great deal of work and careful thought. It was worth the extra effort!
There are probably only a handfull of luthiers who would have even attempted this repair let alone achieving such a magnificent repair.
He begged me for a year. I finally gave in. It was a tremendous amount of head scratching but i'm glad I did it.
Fantastic work ! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you too!
Beautiful! I agree, you sir are an artist.
Thanks !
Absolutely beautiful job. Wow.
Thank you very much!

We waffled a bit whether we should replace them with p-90's (which is still an option) but the PAF's sounded so sweet.

Yes that is true. This model and many others have laminated front and backs. They form them in a high pressure mold.
Excellent repair
Thanks 👍
Masterful work
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic restoration Doug. If I could offer some advice about the video, we could really use a complete view of the instrument both before and after the repair.
Yes I agree. It's my very first effort. Future videos will have that feature as well as better camera work.
Incredible. Noticed the last video you posted before this one was like 6 years ago. Hope you begin posting more! Would love to see more of this. Subscribed.
