"There's no factory service info on how to install this part, just a picture", CORRECTION MR.O; there is now a complete video with documented screwdriver trick on how to remove and install this solenoid thanks to YOU!!!
You never fail to please Mr. O! I was going to bust on you for telling us the good stuff was coming and then you decide not to use it, then you bring it out just to make us happy. You're the MAN!
I did the unthinkable.i turned off the notification...sorry Eric I had to stay asleep.hope you understand...your poping out videos faster than my Mossberg 930 spx can spit 00 buck...and just as reliable...cant wait for your outdoor series...thanks there big guy.stay safe (u hit ur noggin)...cheers mate
What can I say, each and every time I watch a vid from you I learned plenty. This time I learned a couple neat things. 1 - the screwdriver trick for strong springs. 2 - that I can walk and chew gum ( only in padded round rooms ). 3 - I really want a set of those screwdrivers from Mr. Dennis so i won't have search for the always illusive, always under a ton of other crap, itsy-bitsy ballpeen hammer to tap those stubborn sticky ain't coming loose easy to strip screws along with set of those nut screwdrivers OH yeah I also learned to let my hot coffee cool a tad before lip locking my coffee cup (insert chew gum and walk test)
Nissan factory protocol for installation of these thermostats is 2 steps: 1. Never remove wax pin(pushrod) as air can be introduced into unit making part inaccurate 2. After removal of new part from retaining spring fixture, you have roughly 10 seconds to install and load wax pin(pushrod) with fast idle cam
I love those early 90's and day 2000's Nissan pickups! It would sure be cool too see a video of the Timing Chain replacement, they are kind of failure prone
Eric, great educational videos as usual! On new dry gaskets, like at the throttle body, a lot of time I will do a light film coating of a white lithium grease on both sides (applied with acid brush). Next time in, the gasket is generally still manageable/useable. I do the same to a used gasket, if I do not have a replacement and it works more often than not. This, also, works for a gasket that is difficult to keep in position during an install, as the grease film hold the gasket in place.
I've known about those FIS but never replaced one, good video. I've rebuilt too many carbs over the years, those coiled linkage springs are a royal pain in the butt to replace or reinstall properly, I'm glad you didn't remove it.
My experiences with Nissan (owned both an '87 and a '97 Hardbody P/U) is that corroded fasteners had more tendancy to break off than break loose for me...especially the screws holding the distributor cap on.
was woken up by SMA notification squad! shweeeeeet!!! now got my fix of your 5th vid in a row. I am so loving it! my goodness, Dr O. your the best ever. I even set up my monthly $$ to your Patreon. I am getting my money worth! keep it up, buddy!
I almost bet I can guess who makes that light. but maybe not. Another great video. And I bet as a kid the talking before you think got you the same it got me, a good backhand!
i worked on allot of dyhatsu, those little work trucks with that same carb set up. and yes I used the screwdriver trick myself then had to make that gasket if it was too bad. great job boss 👍👍
I guess they needed that huge spring to allow the new part to expand and shrink in the package while on the shelf. A rigid brace might break or cause the part to fail, and if it gets too loose internally it could fall apart. It might have been better to design the system to have an internal end stop that limits travel of the sensor piston. Presumably they couldn't do that because of the way the sensor and wax pellet are assembled....
So far my Vampire pliers have worked good removing screws with stripped out heads. I got the set and am happy with them. Video every day this week...nice!
Yeah, but Vamplier missed the most important set of pliers of all! People rarely use pliers that way (tip on the screw/nut etc) as the serrations are horizontal and not vertical. However, there is one type of plier that I feel is almost always used tip first to remove problem screws/nuts etc. Any guesses as to which type I'm referring to?
Exactly! That's how I feel vise grips are frequently used, tip first. Yet, no Vamplier vise grips. I won't buy their regular pliers but when they come out with the Vise grip set I'm in for sure.
The handle length & fulcrum point let you apply a lot of pressure to the screw head. I haven't had them slip yet and I use the largest pair I can. I haven't had any screws that they didn't get out but Eric I'm sure will give them a good test in the NY rust...curious to see how they work for him. GA is no comparison to NY rust but I can see him snapping the heads off with the Vampliers and leaving rusted shanks.
Expanding wax element... Where have I heard this before??? Oh yeah! My 1984 Chrysler New Yorker with the Mitsubishi engine with the Mikuni carburetor. That Mikuni carburetor used a wax element to disengage the choke... theoretically... but it was the single point of failure. I never had to worry about a radar cop chasing me down, because with the 'destroyer smoke screen' I laid down, the cop lost sight of me every time. What a crock of the 'genuine article.' Nobody here in Deetroit had a solution for the problem; a carb rebuild could only be done by one or two shops on the west coast (read that L.A. for about $750 in today's dollars) and the Detroit solution was 'the crusher.' Thank you Chrysler; Domo Arigato Mikuni!
Eric, the wax inside the Fast Idle Solenoid expands when cold and contracts as it gets hot and liquidifies. So the plunger is extended while cold making the engine idle fast until it comes up to temperature when the wax contracts and the plunger shortens.
That doesn't sound quite right. I was looking at the linkage in my 93 hardbody, and the space between the high idle cam and throttle lever is only closed if the plunger contracts. It would have to be pretty chilly in order for the cam to pivot upwards and contact the throttle lever. The plunger must contract to make this happen. When the engine warms, the wax expands, and the plunger extends, moving the cam off the throttle lever. I watched a tutorial on wax motors, and they are used in a wide variety of applications, from aircraft, to appliances. The wax motors always rely on heat to extend, cold to contract.
Why? The vehicle already has an idle air control valve, an engine coolant temperature sensor, and a computer. Someone at Nissan was smoking the wacky tobbacy when they came up with this!
Maybe on your application but the ones I have run across extend with heat and cause the cam to shuttle and allow the throttle plate to close more. Slowing the RPM.
Graham Reid y'all keep talkin like that and it will be scannerdanner, ah I mean South Main Auto premium in a few days!! Ya gotta make him think it's just O.K., not all uppity neat, and greater than sliced bread, and a fortunate replacement for coffee. Gosh darn it, we don't want him thinking that he's that good!!
I'm sure this has been brought up, but there is a Japanese Standard for Phillips head fasteners that is slightly different than standard Phillips. I work on Japanese industrial electronics and I bought a screwdriver after I found this out and have yet to cam out of the head. I don't know if this is always true, but the japanese screws have a dimple on the head.
Serious question, Eric. How do you keep your nails so clean?? I am strictly a weekend mechanic and my nails are black for several days after any job, no matter how minor. You work on cars all day every day and your nails are always clean. What kind of cleaner / technique do you use to clan your hands at the end of each day??
Get a little nail brush bro, I grew up with 3 older sisters and got hell for gunk under my nails, it's like 25 cents for a nail brush, and you'll be minnnttt
I have been wondering about that light for a long time to! I didn't know it was special though... I just thought it was another neat toy that I cannot afford right now.
Dude! I've been looking at that part and going WTF is with the spring & s$1^. Now that I see it's packaging and can see the actual part I get it! Thank you!
You're going to have to do a separate video about getting the shop crust off of the windshield of the Hondoo when it's done LOL, it's turning a funky yellow already.
Yo Eric O @southmainautorepairllc the throttle body mounting gasket is the big circular gasket. The one under that spacer adapter thing that goes from a big circle to 4 smaller ones, comes with the intake manifold gasket kit. I've never been able to find that gasket by itself.. loosening those bolts does loosen that gasket under that plate that we didn't see in the video, but because u didn't remove or even mess with that plate, should be absolutely fine... Lol on mine, I removed it all and then realizes I didn't have either gasket! Haha used rtv and believe it or not, I TOTALLY have a vacuum leak go figure. Stupid me hahahaha. Love ur channel man! I'm always watching!
I just saw the Actron CP9690on one of your vids. and showed that it'll test coolent temperature. I just bought one on EBAY for my 1985 Ford with OBDI. It'll be better than my Snap-on scanner which doesn't test digital readings like OBDII. I've been wanting to test things like CTS temps. and O2 readings etc. THANKS!!
Nice video Eric but JEEZO your on fire with the videos these days. I am off for a coffee and i hope to see another new vid when i return...... On a serious note,i have not had any notifications on your vids for a few weeks now. Great work Eric, your the man.

OE parts. Warms my heart. Someone loves their vehicle.
That's classic. I was looking at the light but not realizing it was something new although it got my attention :). Good work sir
I love the sound a tight Phillips head screw makes when it breaks loose.
Me too!

but you can only take phillip to the bar sooo many tines before he stops making that noise lol
Those are JIS, not Phillips !!!
Looks like modern old school choke set up cool, great job Mr. O.
Similar to an old dashpot
As ever, a perfect video, you have developed a very nice balance of instruction and entertainment, not to mention some REAL skill Top work !
Eric O goes old school on this ancient Nissan.

Use a zip tie on it next time to hold the spring up around the large bolt , had this one time and it worked like a charm
Hannahs face after she starts is priceless. Ugh bored! love these videos
Hi Eric form Az im a diesel technician i love you videos
You are really productive, pushing out a lot of videos :-) And I love it ! Also love the support on Patreon.
Thanks, and thanks for the support on Patreon. It really helps especially because the YT revenue has gone right in the tank
As a matter of fact, I was eye balling that light...you caught me.
Top Secret at this point :D
a cable tie in the spring to the air box mounting bolts before you took it off will ave made it easier to get back on
Three bond has saved me more than once when I forgot that gasket order.
wow 5 videos in the same week! careful we'll get used to that :p
Joined the Patreon SMA support community today. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the support! Appreciate it!
awsome. im on vacation and i get a video everyday. morning coffee and sma

Even with your fancy schmancy new 10 megalumen prototype hood light, you reached for the 40SL for some more light! lol Schweet video Mr. O. Thanks!
Such a tease with the brake clean and the prototype light.
Dr. O
awesome 5 vids
what a blessing
1980's tech in a 2001 WOW lol!
Simplicity at its best they are pretty reliable

i was going to tell you about JIS screwdrivers but somebody beat me to it. I love them.
If you can video it, I can watch it. Nice light and a good fix. Thanks
I watch almost every video and hit the thumbs up as soon as you break out the "Good Stuff" lol
Nice job loosening the Philips head screw with the hammer. Gotta use that trick in the future.
Nice! Now if you're like me you ain't gonna throw that transportation spring thing away... You never know when that could come in handy 😀
I was thinking the same thing! I've got a dedicated spring container. :D
Yeah it will go along with the other 4 tons of handy stuff i keep........
Yes... I still have it haha. Looks to good to throw away :)
😂 thought so!
South Main Auto Repair Yeah just wait till you need a valve spring that's no longer available haha.
Nice video Eric but JEEZO your on fire with the videos these days.
I am off for a coffee and i hope to see another new vid when i return......
On a serious note,i have not had any notifications on your vids for a few weeks now.
Great work Eric,your the man.
YT is all messed up and that is why I am not getting the views anymore. Wish I could fix it but it is on YT's end
You need more click baity titles.... like YOU'D NEVER BELIEVE WHERE THIS NISSAN IS LEAKING FROM!
Another great vid,,,, thank you. But what is the light bar going across the hood of the car please ???? I looked on your store web site but didn't see it ,,,,
When you show the brake clean my sub woofer rocks the house!
I need that light in my life
Nice easy fixes Good Work as always Eric O Sweet Underhood Light BTW @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
hey Eric I got an idea for the red Honda: fix it and give it away to a viewer! As a condition the winner must be without a vehicle and in dire need of one. they must make a video explaining why they should win it as well...
What was its symptoms. That's why I'm looking on here to try to find out what is causing my symptoms. He just goes straight to the fix. Fix for what? Mine surges at idle.
Someone's been a busy bee! Five new videos this week. Awesome! Anything special planned for the 100K subs milestone? I think you're on pace to hit it in the next couple of months :)
Auto zone sells a gasket rejuvenating product that is great when you have to reuse a gasket.
FIC adjustment, what will happen if you turn the screw on top of the FIC valve clockwise or counter clockwise? I have 02 Nissan Frontier 2.4L. Thanks in Advance
great video Erik, I am pretty sure other viewers have suggested it but it would be nice to use a laser pointer in hard spots to point out what you are wanting us to see,
not so much on this video.
Ummm Eric are they Philips screws or are they JIS screws??? Philips screwdrivers just cam out of those JIS screws.I know i only found out about them recently as well.
JUST WATCHED THIS VIDEO. HAVING TROUBLE WITH HIGH IDLE. CHECKED IACV. TOOK OFF AND CLEANED. DIDN'T BENCH CHECK. NO CEL's LIVE IN LAS VEGAS. REAL HOT HERE. DID A BYPASS ON COOLANT LINES TO THROTTLE BODY. COULD THAT BE A PROBLEM IF NOT THE PROBLEM?
MY 99 is running fast as hell. once it warms up the idle goes up and down if it is in park or neutral. if it's in gear it idles at around 1,000 RPM. I noticed mine is covered in corrosion.
Now does this Also control your idle? My screw was bent on my 3.3l not sure if that affects it have low idle
Thanks for so many vids this week. So funny, the first thing I was hoping you'd comment on was the underhood light. It's like you know my thoughts. creepy. boys and our toys is my explanation.
Hope that phone call was good
I noticed the light immediately! ohhh New toy I see lol
I have an 87 D21 pickup. VG30i v6 5 speed. I can’t find this valve anywhere and my truck just started idling at 2k last night in cold weather after it warmed up. I’m suspecting this
Will this make the truck run ruff I'm having issues that no mechanic can seem to figure out
Hey, like the video, I just bought a 99 frontier and it runs and drives but its idling funny and kinda boggs down with no gas, could it be this issue with the throttle body?
i actually did think "Damn that light looks soooo much better than mine" guess i'll have to wait. :)
I look forward to more videos.Keep it up!
That might be a stupid question, but why exactly does a throttle body need to be cooled? I don't think my Civic has a coolant hose attached to it...Hmm.
I learn lot of things if I say I become machinic and inspiration of sir and scannerdanner I love all of your video I waiting to see first one I feel I say
Eric
In your opinion which is More reliable in General - Nissan Frontier or Toyota Tacoma?
Now if you don't wanna get backlash from the People
Try...... if it were your money which would you buy?
What were the symptoms of the failing fast I’ll thermal control valve?
Nice brushonastick action!
five in a row... nice!!
What brand of hood light are you using they look bright I like them is it a Astro?
That is one smooth engine! I gotta get me one of those! All you hear is the air getting sucked in! 2001 Nissan Frontier? 2.4 Liter Inline-4 you say?
So if it has an electronic IAC...why still have this mechanical system. Anybody know?
@HeadingEast33 Alot of Thermostats work the same way
Hi. I have a 1994 Nissan xe has 204500miles .. has engine shakes when idling, what could be the problem..help
Do you have the video of you changing the water pump, if so where can I find it
Hello, I'm having issues with the idle to low, do I replace the same device on the throttle body ? Thanks
ooo a secret squirrel light!
I bust up - LAUGHING 😂, every time you say - "TORQUE to factory SPECS ", I just can't get enough of it I could hear that over and over and over AGAIN!!, LOLOL 😁
I just subscribed to your channel. I do need to know if this device keeps the truck running when it is cold. Please inform. Very important.
What caliber brush was that in the drill, . 40 cal. Lol. Nice
Apparently that Bees wax is reliable stuff. I fly a jet that uses a similar bees wax canister inside the engine fuel control. Rolls Royce Spey engine.
