This really helped me out! I changed my chain in spring and it started jumping off the large chaining often when changing gears. I tried adjusting the derailleur positions and limit screws, but it didn't help. It never came to mind that the chain was the issue. I put another chain and now the issue is solved!
Thank you! I have nearly given up on my '84 Miyata that has been my go-to for touring. In its (and my) old age, it has been dropping the chain regularly, and having just gotten back into cycling, I have foolishly kept pedalling or even backpedalled, jamming it between the front rings. I will more confidently try to adjust it again. Thanks!
I appreciate your video and the clear explanation of the many possibilities that could cause chain drop. I have been having problems with chain drop on my city bike ever sense I bumped the front chain guard, and thanks to your video, I now have a few different ideas of what to check to fix it. Thanks for posting!
Thanks you so much, This video did help me to fix my chain drop issues, each time when i went downhill i had this hesitation while changing the gear or else it could slip and drop off majority of times, and then i had to go down road and try to adjust it all in together but now there's no such issue. - Happy rider indeed
This is my first road th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and I have taken it out a handful of times and so far it is exceeding all of my expectations. I didn’t want to break the bank on a first bike and the herd is a great option for getting a fast bike with reliable components. I plan on riding this bike for many years to come. Thank you Sava!
I'm using a 105 groupset with an extender for the RD to accommodate a 40t cassette, a bike I use for touring carrying 20Kg loads. The chain drops when I peddle backwards when going downhill while taking a bend. Something I need to remind myself when I'm on my touring bike. I didn't want to spend more money on a newer groupset that can accommodate a bigger cassette. That's the price I have to pay. Other than that it never happens. However I will try using an Ultegra or 105 chain to see if it might help. Currently using a KMC. I will see if it makes a difference.
Only one thing you forgot to say how to adjust the cable tension of the front derailer. Otherwise very helpful as my bike's chain drops to the inside on the front sprockets kinda often. From what you said - could be a bit of user error and derailer some adjustment.
I have an Calypso Jazz bike by Trek my chain key coming off I can only ride in first gear it only has 6 gears. Can you help in very simple instructions. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank u
@@Nightbikerappened to me 😂 I try not to shift when speeding too often and do it after 30 seconds of shifting or try not to spin chain backwards when turning going fast or spinning backwards while changing gears 😂 I say this because the chain tensioners suck and can’t handle speed or be durable but idk I might put a chain tensioner made for racing or performance and durability I try not to speed or beat on my fat tire bike worried the chain tensioner will break that happens to every mountain bike I’ve had the gears always messed up after just driving the bike and changing gears a couple times while trying to ride fast 😂
I still dont know how to fix the 1st problem. I have the chain jammed all the way down and it can barely move, I cant handle it or move it like you do at 3:59
my front deraileur slams to lower gears and it requires a ton of force from shifter to shift down. I get a feeling that it can break something realy bad in the shifter
can you make a video about loose spokes, before every ride I check spoke tension and its fine but after I hit the road some spokes starts to rattle and unwind
+1 on riding style, i experience strange chain drop where it drop to inner side when i shift from small ring to big ring. Everytime when it occur i was shifting 3 cog up on back end at the same time as shifting from small ring to big ring on the front. After this observation i shift it one by one, rear first then spin one round then front and this chain drop never happens again. ... Until i think that i still want to do both shifting at the same time for smooth cadence transition, so i bough a chain catcher and continue my bad habit without getting fear that my chain might drop ever again.
I need some help and was not able to find a decent answer. I run a 3x9 setup I recently ugpgraded to a 11-50t 9spd casette and a set of hubs but my rd is still an 8spd shimano tourney (was planning on buying a shimano alivio rd with it but my local bike shop was currently out of stock). The hubs and the casette works just fine. Problem is, when I freewheel or backpedal, my chain slacks and sometimes the lower chain pulls my rd forward. Also, when I release the pedal, it spins with the wheel. One friend told me that it might just be because of the new hub, either the grease was dry or is still so new that it needs some mileage to loosen it up a bit. Another told me that maybe my rd cant handle that casette or the hubs. I can still ride but it's kinda scary, might break some spokes. So until the shop stocks up, I'll be sticking with the problem. Any input on what makes this happen will be so appreciated. Help a beginner out. Thanks!
I have experienced chain drop on the front on 3 occasions. At the front it comes off between the small ring and the frame. Bianchi infinito. It’s difficult to free the chain it jams not much space between crank and frame. The chain drop only occurs when I double shift. I will try gentler shifting see if this solves it.
You have quite the assortment of component brands on your road drivetrain. The Ultegra/Dura-Ace and Praxis chainrings are forged and higher quality than many CNc rings. Also the tolerance of higher end KMC, Shimano and Campy chains is better than SRAM. Personally I'd recommend staying with one brand of drivetrain.
I never get my chain stuck like so. My adjustments are always perfect for the top to bottom wall adjustment. However, it regularly happen that my chain while stuck/stick on the front lowest gear ratio because the tooths are too old compared to the oldness of my chain. It's a pain for the frame of the bike when it happen.
On a bike like that, the chain shouldn't be on the top spike, right? My chain came out today. I tried putting it on the top spike, but it just don't work like that. it doesn't spin. So I put it on the bottom spike.
I am experiencing major chain drop the last two weeks with my 1X drive train XT and oval Rotor. My guess now is that 1. The wear of the chain is the cause. A very loose worn chain will cause sideways movement a lot more. 2. Worn teeth on both sprockets, front and rear, won’t do any good either. The proper fit on the system is gone. I think it’s rather soon (9 months of very intense riding but good maintenance) I’m installing a new set now and hope it solves the problem. It must do so, but it is rather soon that I have to in my opinion. Thanx!
The problem with my cycle is that my chain only drops when I’m going FULL speed on the top gear and if I’m not sitting on the seat when it drops then I’m screwed
+cannondany i have like a problem on my bike and dont really know the issue, when i am upshifting on the 3rd gear (front chainring), then go like some meters like that and then stand up and accelerate, the chain is dropping. I changed the chain, but im not sure if i need to change the chainring, to me it's looknig pretty ok. Any help is appriciated. Thanks
+cannondany the chain drops outwards yes , the only thing i didnt check is the axle , thanks. Also keep up the good work , at almost all your videos i learned something new about bikes thanks !
I experience chain drop when I am in a large-toothed cog on the cassette and I shift into the large chainring in the front. This would happen when I am cresting a hill and I don't shift into a smaller cog, but I do shift quickly back into the large chainring. I have stopped doing this... but is there a better solution?
What about on a 1x setup when the chain falls off the lone chainring ONLY after either hitting root bump on the bike path, or roots on trails. What the do now?
i have a a fat tire cobra modiefied with a spring to for suppsenion now so when i ride it it is very heavy to move and it has very hard presure on my feet when i move but it can go really fast when i try to race with my friend that has a racing bike and modified with a spring and gear changer he when i race with him and get in a really high speed my chain slips off and and i can't brake coz i have the brakes in the pedal (when i reverse the pedals it stops but when the chain slips i can't stop it so can u help me make it stop sliping i have went to so much people and say stop pressing hard on the pedals and ride slow and i live in iraq and not all streets are perfect coz most are unfinished streets like the just put stones and dirt that my street and when i try to go racong with my friends it always slips can u help they always leave me behine my friend has another bike like me and he can race and his chain doesn't slip like mine and i have to go fix the chain everytime for it coz i can't find the right tools for it !
reason why it drops its because its too lose to fix it untighten the backwheel and put soflty back as much ad you can then tighten it while holding it in same position this has worked for me over 7 years and never happened since then
I just changed my chain, cassette and chainrings and my chain drops a lot of times between cassette and frame from the smallest cog. Could be that the chain is too long or because i don’t have that derailleur clutch anymore,it’s broken?
My chain has only gone where it shouldn’t twice. First time shifting from 3rd to 8th to fast and it jumped off. And the second i was going down a curb and my pedals swung backwards so when the chain drooped down it then swung back up and off a and i smashed my solid metal flat pedal into my knee with all my body weight behind it, luckily it only brushed for a bit and healed before i got back home and looked at it.
On a bike like he has, the chain doesn't go on the top spike, correct? My chain fell out today and I put it on top, but it doesn't go there since I tried spinning it and nothing. I left it on the bottom.
How about not just talking for 1year . You show how its done . Some people have no clue about what you are talking about. They just need the video clip to show what to do .

Really good troubleshooting advise , didn’t even realize that every bit of fine tuning has a big effect on the functionality of the components. 👍
