Titania's Palace, the Fairy Queen's Dolls'house (part one)

  • Miniaturist Journal 68. This is part one of my visit to Titania's Palace in July 2023. Sir Nevile Wilkinson's Fairy Queen's Dolls'house is exhibited at Egeskov Castle in Denmark. The reflections on the glass fronts of the dolls'house made it very difficult to get good shots of the rooms in the dolls'house, so editing this video was a struggle.
    Miniaturist Journal is a record of my activities, experiences, thoughts and observations in vlog form, all relating to miniatures.

    You did an incredible job of filming this! I don't think I could have seen all that detail even standing in front of it. I love the opal inlay that was sprinkled throughout the house!

      Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. I do agree that sometimes it is easier to pick up on details when you're looking at a photo or watching a video. Especially with houses like these where there is so much going on in each room...

    Thank you Josje for this wonderful video. I had almost forgotten that I had seen Titania's palace when I was a little boy visiting Legoland on a summer vacation with my parents in the early 1990s. It was after we had spend an exhausting day at Legoland, my parents were tired and wanted to leave, but for me it was the highlight of the entire day and I refused to leave until I had seen all the tiny treasures. Maybe it was then that my love for miniatures was born. I remember the handwritten bible and the stunning secretary desk and a family of tiny carved ivory elephants. These special pieces had been taken out of the house and were shown in small glass cases along the walls of the exebition room, maybe that's why I still remember them so clearly. I'm exitedly looking forward to part 2 of your tour.

      You're welcome! Those are wonderful memories. Although many years later, I also saw it at Legoland for the first time, when my son was young. I remember those glass cases around the room. And I also remember those carved ivory elephants in there!

    It's all pretty incredible especially the Micro mini Qn.Mary's Palace; and who doesn't love it! yet methinks that despite her father's promise to build her a doll's house, his poor daughter probably never got a chance to play with it! 😉

    • @MakeMiniatures
      @MakeMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, yes, she was 18 when it was finished. I don't think he ever intended it as a play house.

    You did an amazing job filming this GORGEOUS dollhouse, even with the troubling reflection. Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to get such great shots of every area! This was such a treat for me! I'm not that familiar with the styles from this area but I LOVE the styles represented in this dollhouse. It's European but it also seems to have almost a Mediterranean or middle eastern feel to some of the items. Such beautiful style and amazing taste. So many different colors and shapes and yet it all flows so nicely. I'm also very impressed with the taste and talent of the father that made this for his daughter. All of the wood, ornate carvings and intricate dishes and items and special fairy touches like the beads in the doorway. Loved the wallpaper of the animals running around the room in the kids room.... just so many things I loved I'll have to watch this again. I really respect the craftsmanship it took to make these miniatures and this dollhouse. Thanks again Josje! Another wonderful video :)

    • @MakeMiniatures
      @MakeMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're so welcome! When this dolls' house was created, in the first quarter of the 20th century, interiors, especially those of artists, often had an eclectic feel to them with influences from other cultures. Your observation about the Mediterranean and middle eastern items is entirely correct. There are many items collected from all over the world in the house! I've only managed to show you a small amount of all the wonders of the house. It is spectacular! Thank you, Rebekah! 😃

    Thank you so much for sharing this. It truly is a palace full of treasures. I have also seen Tara’s Palace at Powerscourt in Ireland which was commissioned to replace Tatiana’s. I believe it ( tatianas, was once there), but Ireland was outbid by Denmark when it was sold.

      You are so welcome! Yes, in 1978 the LEGO company won the bidding war for Titania's Palace at the Christies Auction. The underbidder was Irish. The Museum of Childhood shares the story on its website: taraspalace.ie/tara%E2%80%99s-palace/

    Beautiful video of a beautiful fairy house! I kept thinking about the move from Legoland to this castle and wondering how long it would have taken to pack everything and know where to put it back, so that it was just right! (With the exception of the vacuum cleaner🙃)
    Thank you, Josje, also for the promise of a Part 2!

    • @MakeMiniatures
      @MakeMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Idske! I read somewhere that the house had been made with the intention of displaying it in exhibits to raise money for children in need. The house had to be taken apart and put back together relatively easily and it could be done by two men. I also read somewhere that the house is cleaned every year and it takes two people two full weeks to do that. I imagine packing things up for transport would take even longer!

    Such a beautiful house. What a lovely father to make a dollshouse for his daughter. My father made us one in the 50's with lights, it was a swiss chalet style. In some ways I didn't appreciate it when I was a child, but I would love to have it now. Thanks for the visit, will await Part 2. xxx

    • @MakeMiniatures
      @MakeMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, as children we don't really see the value of such gifts, but you probably enjoyed playing with it, and I'm sure that is all your father wanted. I can imagine you would love to still have it.
      Thanks Marilyn!

      Exquisite! And to think it was all hand made, no 3D printing, laser cutting, scanners or even power tools. The veneer the makers used must be paper thin. It boggles the mind as to how they managed to produce some of those minute pieces. BTW the music you chose was a the perfect accompaniment for our special tour. Heartfelt thanks Josje.
