  • We went vegan in 2001, around the birth of the Information Age, we learned most of our info from books in the library and ideas weren't shared very quickly. Here's some of the things Dave wishes he knew.

    I'm 56 and became vegan by doing veganuary 2018. Never liked meat and was a vegetarian on and off throughout my life. The reason I finally became vegan was when I found out about the dairy industry. How cruel it is. Your videos have helped me enormously. I have never felt so well . It's the best decision I have made.

    Couldn't agree more with the idea of 'leading by example'. Turning vegan often boils down to something abstract finally clicking in your head and if people are trying to force the lifestyle on others it only alienates them. Being a happy vegan is the most effective and positive way to convince people.

    "I'm already skinny - if I go vegan, I'll end up like a twig!" ... Hey, in most cases (depending on the fat, of course), french fries/chips are vegan. You're not going to get skinny if that's all you eat.. ;) But yeah, good points all around. It's been... man, probably over 10 years for me personally, now, and the changes I've seen around me in terms of being able to find alternatives at every local grocery store, and then realising that I didn't *need* those alternatives because I feel so much more in control when I make stuff at home (closer to) 'from scratch' myself... it's great. Definitely hear you on the honey vs. vinegar aspect. One thing I've found that's fun with things like parties, especially ones that are more of a potluck, is bringing one or two homemade dishes that are completely vegan, and you wouldn't know it unless (until) we told you. Obviously check with your friends for anyone that's got an allergy or sensitivity first (I have one friend who's sensitive to soy, for example, and another who's celiac, like my dad), but it's fun to offer someone a homemade chocolate chip cookie, get that 'oh wow, that's pretty good!' reaction and go 'yup, and it's vegan', or even 'yup, vegan + gluten free!'. For some reason people still assume 'vegan' = 'tastes like cardboard', when in reality it can be the complete opposite, because the fact that we tend to also like using things like higher quality, organic ingredients to start with can make a big difference in the end result. However, I can totally understand that it's not for everyone - some people will just never be interested in giving up something that they enjoy, and no amount of guilt tripping will change that. Even if it's unfortunate that some of those people then decide to go on the aggressive when they find out that you're not exactly like them - but I've got my easy defusal in that sort of situation: Sure, I went vegan because my girlfriend at the time wanted to try it, but I stuck with it because of how much better it made me feel - because I later found out that I have Crohn's disease, and that makes your guts sensitive to a whole lot of things - dairy in particular. It's not a cure in and of itself (I still have to be on powerful medication - some of which, admittedly, is probably not vegan in terms of how it's derived, but there are only so many battles you can win), but just keeping on top of your diet, listening to your own body in terms of what it needs, how it reacts to the things you put into it... that's the key to unlocking feeling better no matter where you're starting from. :) Keep up the good work, lads - loving your book (yes, I have more to get soon!) and channel!

    I went vegan for the animals, period. I watched Earthlings while I was having a stake for dinner. I stopped. I cried. I never touched animal products again. This was 12 years ago. The environmental reasons for being vegan came later. The health issue still comes last in the list. I know in my heart my diet will never change back to an animal-based diet. I would rather starve myself than to take someone's life again. Great videos guys! Keep up the good work :)

    LOVE the walkie talking videos! I have made and loved so many of your recipes from videos, but personally I get overwhelmed with the number of recipe videos on youtube and they start to blur together. For me, the thing that sets you guys apart is the non-recipe stuff that makes you YOU! So I would love to hear videos on positive attitude, yoga, meditation, community involvement, parenting, etc. Would also love tips on how to get active and be out in nature when you work a desk job all day, or when you don't live in such a beautiful place as greystones. We all wish we could live like you do, but few of us are able to have such a gorgeous, easily accessible swim in the sea. What can we do in short periods of time to increase happiness, connection with nature, and foster a positive sense of self? Last idea is to do some videos on cooking without recipes! I would love to improve my ability to just look around my kitchen and whip something up without googling ideas or flipping through a cookbook. How to "wing it" successfully, in other words!
    Cheers and thanks for all you do! Look forward to you videos every week, so keep 'em coming! You are such an inspiration!

    I've always wanted to eat vegan, but tried going vegetarian many years ago and found that I became really tired, so gave up. What was missing was a plan! Through your Happy Heart course (no - this is not a paid advertisement), I had a month's plan to get me started and gave me a road map. I've been eating vegan now for 2 1/2 months now and have lost 25 lbs., something I thought could never happen as I have thyroid issues. I'm also excited about the food and feel energised as well happier about my body and my state of mind. Thank you so much! xo

    In a few minutes (know I watched this before but forgot it then it all came flooding back); you said it all. I'm a former academic so I research everything, which is bad and also good; balance is everything; I couldn't find a single excuse to keep on eating meat, including the nostalgia we all have for what we ate as kids. In the case of my family, Europeans in Canada there was so much different food you'd never miss the meat anyway. One of my favorite memories of my Dad is the birthday cake he made for me (February miserable weather and my sis always got the steel bands or whatever celebration was happening in July); flourless; ground hazelnuts and dark chocolate ganash, ok some dairy; 7 layers of wafers, must have taken him hours and he was a busy busy guy. So growing up with a bunch of foodies was helpful; Zigo and Eva (parents) used to dance around in the kitchen before dinner, also a large menagerie of different rescued animals; it all meant Something. They're gone now, but with us still. Tx!!!

    Health, environmental and the other life forms we share the planet with are my main reasons, it can be really tough because I get a lot of crap from people around me even though I don't push veganism on them so I'm very thankful for all the vegan youtubers, you all have been an inspiration and my only vegan friends 🤗🤗also tomorrow is my birthday and I feel like this video is a birthday gift so thank you lol, keep up the great work guys, you all rock 🌹🌹 long live the happy pear 🍻

    I have been having the hardest time with going vegan. I still strongly crave, animal products. I love the vegan cuisine and cooking the vegan food. Love the veggies and salads. Just figured out I am possibly B-12 deficient. Seems once I eat some meat, I am good for about a week. I take copious amounts of nutritional yeast, so thought, can't be the B-12. But there is data out there strongly suggesting that Nutritional Yeast will not always cut it. So am out to buy some quality sublingual b-12 and see if that does the trick. I so hope it does. Vegan for 6 months now, sort of, with that struggling of meat craving and falling off the wagon about once a week. And you guys are the picture of health, so living proof that this lifestyle is a very healhty choice. I will get there eventually. Never give up!
    Plus, love your cooking show, it has taught me to cook delicious vegan food.
    Kay from Bellingham Washington, USA.

    I became vegan when I met a guy who had a dog. The dog taught me that animals have a rich inner life and that they feel love, attachment, joy, fear, curiosity, basically all the stuff humans do. This led me to peter singer’s works and what used to be called, maybe still is, animal rights. There’s no going back.

    One of the last things you said "When I went vegan I felt like I was being more true to myself," that was my experience as well. I felt like I was letting myself be myself, standing up for something, following my heart, and it made me feel empowered to do that in other areas of my life. I take much better care of myself and I don't put myself in positions I don't want to be in just because other people are pushing me there.

    Regarding that last point, I completely agree that veganism can be a catalyst for positive change in other areas of your life--and not just physical change. For me, I have always struggled with being compassionate to myself. I found that living and eating in a way that's more compassionate toward animals helped me extend that compassion to myself and others.
    Also, I love your videos--they've helped me make many a tasty meal. I'd like to know what types of struggles you've both had as vegans and how you overcame them. Are there any struggles you haven't overcome yet?

    You are very wise on "not preaching" and leading by example. Only after watching your videos I stopped hating vegans as all of the that I've met before very very preachy and in my view aggressive about their way of life and staying to make everyone else feel guilty about their food choices! Good work guys and keep it up. I'm weekdays vegetarian and it's getting better and better for me.

    I wish I knew of more whole vegan foods such as lentils, black beans, quinoa etc when I started instead of relying so much on mock meats, and also knew more combinations of seasonings so I could've made tastier meals when I was starting which would've made the switch look more attractive to people around me. As for the Q&A video could you guys possibly tell us a little bit about your sprouts and what/how you grow? Really appreciate all the content!

    Top 1: Your bathroom habits will change. I work in an office where everyone knows your business, so going three times might be great for the colon but can lead to embarrassment with coworkers. I was always regular, but it gets tedious going every time you have to pee. Also, when you tell people you are vegan, they tend to think it's the same thing as vegetarian. I don't talk about my diet but had to ask my show director to arrange for my vegan meals at our recent trade show (I was fully prepared to do my own meals as necessary). It unfortunately became a topic of conversation among staff and I found that most people didn't understand it because the meals were covered with cheese AND i had to explain the ins and outs of it. Of course, that led to more nuanced conversation about how I wasn't really vegan because I was doing it for health reasons. Overall, I find it best to just prepare my own food and not talk at all about my diet because you can't win either way.

    • @allieb1621
      @allieb1621 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get what you are saying - it is amazing to me how many people who do not follow a plant-based diet suddenly know exactly how much those that do are "doing it wrong" or try to relabel you at the same time. You really do not have to be an advocate for your diet or convince others unless you want to - just keep doing what is right for you. Can you find an alternate toileting location if the frequency bothers you? I would think this should settle as your body got used to higher fibre intake.

    I decided to go vegan, a year ago. I have enjoyed my food more and in the area I live in there are branches of the major supermarkets including discounters and they all have a great range of vegan products available. I also have eaten more fruit and vegetables because I focus on a whole foods plant based diet. I base it on avoiding eating as little processed foods as possible but I occasionally treat myself to a pack of vegan biscuits. I also where I find it is practically I will not buy animal products and even those that don't contain animal products but are still tested on animals I will avoid.

    Like many people in Dublin, I don't have a car and I find it a bit hard to find ingredients like Nutritional Yeast or black beans. Especially when I have to take care of my 3 kids, I don't have the time to take bus to bus to different shops to find ingredients. So I was wondering if you could do a video on where to find some essential ingredients for the vegan diet around Dublin? I live right next to a Tesco and Lidl out in Artane, but they don't always have what I need. It would just be super nice to know exactly where everything is so I wouldn't have to source the globe so to speak. LOL! Thanks!

    If you could speak one day about how to deal with people (colleagues, family, friends...) who don't mind critizising, or shaming and how to influence them more about veganism (because it is the lack of interest or misunderstanding that they don't want to try)...just how to live happier without involving too much on that situations (it can be hard sometimes).

    Why not a session on compassion and resilience. These days it feels we are really challenged politically by leadership and the far right that are "testing" our values, particularly our sense of compassion. How has becoming vegan helped and how can we remain vigilant and resilient so we can maintain our ethics. For me, I find myself so much more compassionate for others, not just animals but our own species. I also find I'm so much more sensitive and I need to maintain my own sense of integrity and I think there is a direct correlation to my own vegan journey. Coming to your from Vancouver BC

    Here’s a question for ur Q & A video: many women in Australia are iron deficient and despite taking supplements & eating the recommended meat & eggs for ten years it isn’t working for me as I am once again deficient, my research has moved me to increase the plants in my diet and remove the animal products. I’m just starting out and I can’t afford to be deficient, it’s easy to find protein rich vegan recipes but it’s harder to find diets for those of us who need to increase our iron (and even my weight healthily as I am almost underweight). Where can I find yummy, iron rich recipes that will help me reach a healthier weight? What plant foods are high in iron but low in calcium? (Which block iron)?

      Vegans won't tell you this, but it will be more difficult for you to lead a plant-based diet and I suggest highly that you speak to a doctor/nutritionist. I won't say it will be easy but it's possible. Make sure to consume plenty of lentils. I know spinach is also iron-rich and you can eat a full bag of spinach in a day if your cook it down.

    I became a strict vegetarian which is basically vegan. I don't eat any animal products at all 43 years ago when I became a Seventh-day Adventist. Unfortunately many SDA's are no longer strict vegetarians or vegetarians at all anymore. Those who are live longer than the average by at least 10 years and it isn't just living, its not living in a corner of an old folks home drooling on your shirt half gone in the head that makes it a life style that people should have. It makes you smarter by not decreasing the blood oxygen level in your frontal lobe by a significant amount which made you sluggish and put you into a brain fog that you didn't know you were in until you stopped eating animal products. I have EDS and being a strict vegetarian greatly lowers the amount of pain I am in on a daily basis. It is just a much better life to live and it makes my relationship with my Father in Heaven better as the frontal lobe is the area of the brain that lights up when people pray. So if you want a better prayer life, ditch the animal products. There are no may more things I can say but that is a great start. Have a great day you newbies LOL. Enjoy the few vids I have seen of yours and will watch more of them in the future.

    Love these walking posts from Nature; they really suit your communication style. : ) I had already tried veganism--I mean veganism, not plant-based--once before and failed, because I wasn't sure about my reasons at the time. Information wasn't as open as it is now. Now, I know I am vegan because I don't want animals to be hurt for me, and I'm matter-of-fact about it. I advocate gastronomically, mostly, as that's the first thing people think of when they think about what they'd have to change if they went vegan and I wish I'd been more preachy with food when I was vegan before, because I was in cooking school at the time. For me I think it's important to accept that its not an instant thing as the scope is greater than food and you learn as you go ... to realise that you are on the vegan journey but if youre not instantly perfect that's ok ... you don't have to be the perfect vegan whatever that is ... set your own rules ... validate yourself and don't feel the need to justify your choices ... just do what you think is right 💗 and know that youre always improving 💗

    Wow Dave, the last minute of the video you look so... REAL lol if that makes any sense. You look very reachable and it felt like I was seeing you in person and knew you better haha
    Definitely the last point was the one that really got me and I completely agree. It's something that just feels so me and I wouldn't drop this lifestyle ever! As the years go by I grow with it and enjoy it even more, my friends, my family, they all know these new healthy and delicious ways to eat and that's something I just love doing for them. I don't really need to push them to try something because they actually want to by themselves!
    Thank you for sharing these points that I'm sure they're going to be helpful to new vegans or to people in transition!

    I really really appreciate that yous are vegans who aren't pushy or in people's faces and are so understanding of different people and their circumstances and understanding that the vegan lifestyle isn't for everyone (medically I cannot be vegan due to a chronic B12 deficiency, but I try to eat at least one plant based meal every day if I feel my body can cope with it, so I'm in this weird part time lifestyle while also trying to mind my body and not lose all my money paying for my meds etc). I'm serious I appreciate you guys so much because you're one of two people in the online vegan community where I don't feel ashamed for not being able to wholly follow the vegan way ❤️ love your work lads, and the food is absolutely delicious.

      Hey JoyRowan Casey, I was wondering if you kew there is vegan B12 supplements out there ?
      I know in your situation it is chronic, but many people out there vegan, vegetarian and omnivore as well are B12 deficient. And in some case animals get B12 shots before human consumptions. So even them don't get enough as the used to.

    • @nojerama788
      @nojerama788 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lara Roche I didn't actually, I have to check if they're available in Ireland. It's more that if I did go vegan I'd have to take so much B12 as a supplement I'm not sure how healthy that'd be (I take my B12 as a monthly injection at my GP's office), but I'll definitely check that out!

      Leiðulfr Von Link honestly my problem is more that if I were fully vegan the concentration of B12 I'd need would be way more expensive than I could afford as a student, I plan on being vegan when it's more financially viable for me (ie after Uni) but for now this is the best I can do

    • @nojerama788
      @nojerama788 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leiðulfr Von Link I really appreciate your advice but I'm going to follow the advice of my doctors and nutritionist. B12 is only naturally found in high abundance in animal products, any B12 in vegan substitutes, eg fortified milk, is not very bioavailabile to the human body, even if you don't have a deficiency any nutritionist worth their salt will advise you to go on a B12 supplement if you're vegan. I tried being vegan and it landed me in hospital; my body cannot cope with it, and that was with the guidance of a nutritionist. Right now it's just not an option for me, and the reason I love the Happy Pear is because they don't make me feel ashamed for my body's needs and it's faults which prevent me from living a fully vegan lifestyle. So, I appreciate the suggestions, but I'm going to follow the advice of the professionals

    Being vegan for about two and a half years has taught me some stuff. 1) Your "why" has to supersede your excuses. If you're an ethical vegan, think about the immense amount of suffering and cruelty that animal/animal derivative had to endure to end up on your plate. If you're vegan for the environment, think about the destruction the planet faces by you eating something that isn't vegan. If you're vegan for health, think about the cholesterol and saturated fat. It's SO easy to make excuses, but your why has to have the upper hand. 2) Wear vegan merch. This can be anything from tees to caps to shorts to shoes. This helps people familiarize themselves with the word "vegan" and hopefully, reevaluate their food choices. 3) Lead by example. That's not to say that you can't have your vegan ice-cream or treats every once in a while, but if you're physically/mentally healthy and vibrant, more people will ask you about how you got that way. 4) Like Dave said, always carry vegan snacks with you. This way, you will never have a "craving" for something that you should not be eating. 5) Use the word "vegan" any opportunity you get. 6) Ignore the naysayers. Us vegans are the minority in today's world. Have your facts about animal agriculture READY. Think of it as your elevator speech of sorts. Know what to say if you get attacked for your actions. Check out: yourveganfallacyis.com/en for intelligent responses to rebuttals against veganism. 7) NEVER STOP SPEAKING OUT! I am 100% an ethical vegan; all of the other benefits are just added perks. I am very present on social media activism, and recently I've started doing more street activism too. Check out save movements or cube of truths in your area, if they're there. If us vegans won't speak out against the voiceless, no one will. 8) Free food. People LOVE free food. Recently on campus we had a bunch of vegan snacks (from cheese to meat to gummies) for people to taste test. And then a few weeks later we had another event for earth day, where we had people taste test non-dairy milks and vegan burgers that were reminiscent of big macs, which people for the most part had positive reviews. If you can, treat people to free vegan food.

    Yo dudes. Thanks for your recipe ideas. I love the 5 min meals. I sometimes drop into your place when walking. I suppose you're doing it your way. It I'm a little disappointed that you're not ethical vegans. Like you have vegetarian options in your shop. I think vegetarians don't understand that they are hurting animals and that they need to take another step. You could be the ppl who show them. Can you talk about it in a video? After all we've only got one precious beautiful planet and its being destroyed by raising farmed animals. Also how did you make vegan friends. Because I don't know any and my family think I'm loop the loop. I'm on FB groups and meet up groups but it's just for a day thing. Keep up trying!

    Thanks for sharing. Had I truly investigated what going vegan meant and prepared my meals I would have stayed vegan my 1st try. #2 I realized that revisiting my WHY is helping me to stick to my vegan life. I believe God approved of mans eating meat, however; I also believe he had not intentions for all the crazy inhumane things man is doing to the animals. Which makes it understandable to me why living a vegan life is best for me now.

    Vegan doesn't = healthy! I learned that right away...chips and vegan cookie dough were my snacks. If you aren't familiar with doing a lot of meal prep...PREPARE YOURSELF FOR A LOT OF MEAL PREP. I never cooked much before and so I know vegan meal prep vs non is about the same amount of time, but going from NO meal prep to 15 minutes seemed like forever. I would just start cooking when I wasn't hungry because it took so long to make meals.

    People who eat meat aren't bad people. Yes, veganism is better for the environment but the food you eat is tied to your culture and asking people to just change their diet is asking them to change their culture. That is not easy for everyone and when you call people evil for not wanting to change something tied to their sense of self, all they're gonna do is hate you and tell you to shut up. Also, no one's perfect. Where was the shirt you're wearing made? Did you spin your own fibers and sow it yourself. If you haven't, you're a terrible person because it was likely made in a sweatshop, right? Or maybe you can look at lifestyles more rationally and say that no one's a perfect human being, and at some point trying to be a perfect person is exhuasting. You want people to go vegan, show people how you live and how easy it can be, and if they ever ask for help, THEN go ahead and give them recipes. Or when they come over to your place, cook them a great meal. That is more convincing than calling meat eaters evil. This is coming from a fellow vegetarian.
