  • We had the wonderful Michelle McMacken over recently and we jumped at the idea of shooting videos with her so we thought we'd share 3 things we wish every vegan knew.
    All the best,

    One advice I learned the hard way is not to be too hard on yourself when you slip and find a balance that is sustainable for you in the long run.
    I used to hate myself when eating certain non vegan foods, but couldn't stop eating them either, because I'd give in to temptation once in a while. So there was a lot of self loathing involved.
    I ended up establishing a simple rule, vegan at home, vegan or vegetarian when travelling or eating out. And this has been so much better for me mentally.
    Maybe one day I'll be fully vegan, but until then, I'm "mostly vegan".

    I get the isolated part. I do not have any family or friends that are vegan. And I'm looked at as an oddball that they can poke fun at. I have zero support BUT I do have lots of vegan youtube channels that I watch! So thank you for being here, seriously, THANK YOU!

    • @Linkous12

      I can relate! I live in the south (US) where veganism isn't looked kindly upon, at least outside of the bigger, more liberal cities. I also have worked in non-vegan restaurants my whole life, so my transition to veganism has been really difficult. At some point I'll have to leave the restaurant business, because I don't want to be part of that system anymore.

      Matthew Davis So much respect for ppl like you that continue to do what is right for you even when you don't have much support around you. I believe one day (sooner than we think) the world will transform to better understanding. 💛💛

    I finally did it!!! I've gone full vegan! You guys were my biggest inspiration 😘 Thank you!!! I do have a three year old son who hasn't quite come to appreciate a fully plant based diet... YET... but I've been feeding him lots of new things, bean burgers for example, he loves them!!! He really loves chicken nuggets, do you guys have a video for an alternative? Thank you so much again!!!

    Just FYI if you drink alcohol you'll need more B12 than 2k-2500 mcg per week. It's stored in your liver and you'll lose your stored B12 as your liver clears the alcohol.

    Loved this video! 🌿 You guys are the best! Nutritional yeast (with B12) is my go to for almost every savoury meal haha! And I too, just like the awesome happy pear duo, am all about encouraging people to better themselves through a healthy, plant based and natural way of living and eating :) and am FULL OF RECIPES! If another male perspective of a vegan lifestyle is any interest to you, yes YOU, the random and lovely person scrolling though, then please know that I value your time and truly appreciate your attention! 🙏🏻 If not, well I wish you an amazing day anyways!

    I take liquid b12 and also APA/DHA . Been vegan 8 years and WFPB off and on. Went WFPB 3 weeks ago and know i will stick to it this time, noticing good changes, some subtle, some more. Feeling satiated! 6 lb. weight loss, somewhat more energy in only 3 weeks. Less little aches and pains. Overall feeling like 48, I am 64.

  • @gabyvanbienen
    @gabyvanbienen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved the last part! It can be very difficult to find the balance between creating awareness and staying positive about it. As for B12, I prefer a tablet or spray for under your tongue, as it’s easier for your body to absorb that way if you have digestive issues.
    Love these videos! 💙

    Thanks Lovely People. Love the information about b12. I don't take nutritional yeast as it turns into MSG in the body. I used to use it and loved it for a while, but I noticed my energy being affected after taking it...and after some research, I discovered it turns to MSG in the body, which is such a shame..as it was my go to for flavour and b12

  • @TripleRoux
    @TripleRoux 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I take high quality B12 capsules and my toothpaste is also enriched with B12. Most people actually don't know that the biggest part of B12 supplements are used by the meat industry to feed the animals with, so however you get your B12, it is from a supplement. Soils are empty and most of the cattle is held inside anyway and won't see a patch of grass for their whole miserable life. TAKE YOUR B12 SUPPLEMENTS!! 💖

  • @MadalinaZbranca

    Indeed, B12 is a really important vitamin and it's so easy to supplement it! And taking a B12 supplement, paired with more whole foods and a bit of movement really helps a lot! I'm glad you made this video!

  • @fab11ism
    @fab11ism 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've looked at B12 supplements and often the amount is 25ug per capsule or so. That means you would have to take 40 per week to meet the recommended 1000ug? Is this correct. Also a lot of people are confusing milligrams (mg) with micrograms (ug). There are 1000ug per mg. Therefore people in the comments section saying that they are taking more than 1mg of vit B12 may need to check their product and edit their comments as that is an enormous and costly amount of vit B12. It might be worth reviewing some supplements following this video for clarity to followers of your channel on what's best. Thanks for all the great work and lovely food and recipes :-)

  • @lilmisspeace
    @lilmisspeace 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I drink kombucha and make fermented veggies to get my b12 plus the savoury yeast flakes I eat are fortified.
    I say I'm 98% vegan because I sometimes buy something that turns out only vegetarian or the bread i get is free and I don't check the ingredients as it is only going to landfill if I don't take it so I'm not creating a demand for it - I'm like the clean-up crew 😄

    Strategy to get people to eat more plant based ==> Change yourself amazingly.. I lost 40kg thanks to a mostly whole food plant based diet and the great cooking of Happy Pear! I know all this but, I accent my foods with coconut, olive, and sesame oil and vegan butter. I use all whole foods and of course I use nuch , but I want to evolve the taste in more natural ways to eat. I prep my rice and pasta so I have it. I eat 10 mangos a week and 20 bananas a week. Avocados are all around me in my backyard. How do you transition to no oils or vegan mayo when everything you eat is so good.

    The inclusive thing is challenging. My children have been vegetarian all their life and my mum said disapprovingly, "They'll rebel." So now we are all moving towards being fully vegan. We are doing it as a process and think it will have more longevity. But they have grown up with endless shit from meat eaters about being vegetarian. Then some of them turned vegan and started giving them shit for eating dairy.

    • @BelleBosss
      @BelleBosss 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dana Lee I’d say try to eat as many whole foods as you can (like they said) and keep your saturated fat intake to a minimum. If you’re not vegan, minimize meat, dairy and egg intake as they often contain carcinogens (esp chicken). Of the above in my opinion red meat is the worst for your health but they’re all terrible. Maybe if you haven’t seen it yet watch ‘what the health’ on netflix. They do a pretty good job explaining how animal products are related to cancer. Good luck on your journey and I hope you get better (or at least are able to prolong your life) this way.. all the best

    I take B12 vitamins because foods cannot always be reliable as they to be..
    Also I avoid labels such as vegan. It doesn't go over well. I'm 95% vegan. What does that mean? I consider myself a vegan. But others won't...lol. Doesn't matter. If a person ate meat 364 days a year and no meat 1 day....would u consider them a vegan? Of course not. Just like my 95% vegan doesn't make me a meat eater. That's why I don't like labels... Thanks 4the vid.

It's irresponsible to give health advice without doing due diligence.There are many aspects to consider when supplementing with B12. One is that those with mthfr gene mutation cannot take cyanocobalamin. mthfrgenehealth.com/mthfr-vitamin-b12/ And if you don't produce intrinsic factor, you have to take sublingual B12.

      lol. you think your handpicked website you rely on voids many others that have found cyano can be effective. now you are saying my healthy B12 levels is just a coincidence to me or for countless other vegans who say the same, even though you have zero connection with our personal lives and experiences. what the hell type of elitist do you think you are? I seriously doubt you personally performed the research and scientific studies like you pretend to sound like. Frankly (as if I have not been frank enough), I think you are disgruntled because you know you have been spending too much on your supplementation. Just go with that then. Have a nice day :)

    I feel like with every new vegan there's that initial phase where you just want everyone to see the truth behind what we as a species are eating. And when they don't see it, or see it and just don't care, you become insistent and maybe even begin to push people who aren't as receptive away. But inevitably you reach a point where you have to live by example and casually remind people from time to time that you're vegan and why you are vegan. You catch more flies with agave than with vinegar.

    Thank you for your comments about “being vegan”. I am definitely “veganish”. But I do love seafood when I go on vacation to New England. If someone has me to their home for dinner I will eat what they serve, but I definitely see and feel the benefits of eating plant based and do so most of the time. Thank you for allowing me to be “veganish”. I love your channel!!!

    The vegan society does a Veg1 multivitamin which covers all the main deficiency risks for vegans. It's good.

    I take a B12 supplement every 2-3 days, but also get a little in my oats every morning as I use a fortified plant based milk :)

    I use nutritional yeast with added B12 and sprinkle it on salads and meals after cooking and really enjoy the savoury taste it adds to anything. You include it in many of your recipes but would just like to point out that to preserve vitamins it is not advisable to heat up to 100c.(It says so on the container). Love the videos btw .

    I think the interesting thing about B12 and it's biology is that we still don't know that much about it and it's chemical analogs. One of the benefits of the fake meat industry is that it is added to a lot of vegetarian food as well as nutritional yeast. However the only cells on the planet that make it are prokaryotic microbes (bacteria and blue green algae). Even spirulina is deemed to absorb it from cohabiting bacteria and not produce it. There are some inconclusive studies in India on vegans who are not B12 deficient and they have a very different gut flora from most of us and it seems do not absorb it just from the small intestines. Absorption from the gut can be an issue and make meat eaters deficient as well as vegans and it's not just about intrinsic factor in the stomach. I often wonder if we looked after our all important microbiome could we delete the need for supplements. Our ancestors had incredibly diverse plant diet and a lot of fibre and the microbe population of the soil was healthier. Having been so long winded, one way to supplement with a whole food is to take blue green algae. There are some that have incredible amounts of B12 and other micro nutrients and get tagged as super foods.

    I take the losenge thing for B12. BUT I would caution ppl not to take too much. I didn't realize I was taking too much, plus I really like nutritional yeast, my levels were off the charts. I get labs pretty regularly because of thyroid/hashimoto's. One of my liver levels, AST I believe, was elevated. My doc suspected it was the too much B12. I stopped taking it all together until it came back down. Liver level came back down. Now I just take it once a week.

    Is it better to take a B Complex or strictly B12 alone? Also, can you take too much? For example taking a multi vitamin and B12 as well? I’m just transitioning to more plant based so really appreciate the videos! Thanks!

    I went vegetarian a year and a half ago... And tried to go vegan, but the more fruit, vegetables, legumes and fibre I eat.... The sicker I get. Ulcerative colitis is a cruel disease... I'm so bored of plain low fibre food.

    B12 - 1000 microgramms twice a week is totally new to me. I read years ago that 3 microgramms per day are absolutely perfect, I even take 50 per day, blood tests are great. Why are 1000 recommended here?
