- The video of a sun bear waving to visitors at a Chinese zoo went viral after some social media users suggested that it could be a human wearing a bear costume. CNN's Ivan Watson speaks to a sun bear expert about the authenticity of the bear and the dangers the species is facing.

Should be noted that sun bears are extremely intelligent. Captive bears have been known to mimic human body language and even facial expressions nearly on par with gorillas. That bear was 100% waving to the audience. These animals are a treasure, and as silly as the viral exposure is, it's a good thing it happened to draw attention to it.

I' m expert in Bear/Man costumes and I can confirm that this is a Bear! However its not a Sun Bear its was a normal bear wearing human costume wearing a Bear costume to convince zookeepers to let him go.

These are gorgeous animals and the upside of this story is that it's made people aware of the diminishing numbers. I saw one in Australia which looked as though it was a human in costume - but only because it waved.

Bear is called "brother" by many Native American tribes because they do things like this. Bears stand up and even walk often and they have a tendency to do a "wave" like this when they want something from you. Racoons do the same thing.
Yeah, most mammals just aren't built to wave their paws the way bears/raccoons are. Both get into the same kinds of mischief, too, though obviously on different scales.
Ever seen a porcupine stand up? I saw one standing in the road once. I couldn’t see its back quills. Just the underbelly. It was dark out, but the headlights of my car lit it up. It looked like some kind mythical creature. It lowered itself back onto all fours, and that’s when I realized it wasn’t just a porcupine, but a yellow porcupine.
Almost everybody knows orangutans - the gorilla like animals found in South East Asia. As the "Brother" nickname given to bears in North America because they are like humans, does anybody know that "orangutan" in the Indonesian/Malaysian languages means the jungle man?

Let me confimed it again to those who is still sceptical that its a Bear, A Sun bear ..they are extremely intelligent.
They have a cute light sun mark on their chest and quite loose skin for protection (that explains why their skin folds when they stand ) and they can act almost like humans too since they are intelligent (kinda like gorillas in some ways. They are the smallest bear in the world (same size as a regular dog) and they have large paws and feet because they climb a lot, in fact, they climb trees the most amongst bears.
They really loves honey so they are the closest to Winny the Pooh too.
I know cus I am familiar with them. After all, they are native species in my country (Malaysia, used to be called Malayan Federation 60 plus years ago) Even their full name shows that. MALAYAN SUN BEAR. Malayan stands for Malay Malysian. the Malay ethnic people is the majority here. But Malaysia is a multicultural country since we gain our indepence from British in 1957 and we do have huge numbers of Chinese Malaysian, Indian Malaysian, lots of aboriginals (various small tribes), Thai Malaysian and more mix people who lives here for generations, some even spanning over more than 6 six generations already, they are already here before our independence . The reason why I emphasize on this is because the person who was interviewed is an expert who lives in Sabah, one of our states. And yeah, the expert is a Chinese Malaysian. He is definitely not a Chinese from China. His Malaysian though descended from Chinese etnic. So no Chinese govt involvement here.
@@ghostladydarkling3250 hahahaha...yes, me too still find it weird sometimes because these cute bear tend to stand really straight.. but the again, they are the best tree climbing bears and their size is small too (I wanna cuddle them soo bad). I still remember I once went to Malaysian national zoo (we called it Zoo negara) years and years ago. I managed to looked at a pair of mother and really young child sun bear. You see, the mother itself stretch her child's body while they were resting under the shade. Not to mention, they sometimes actually carry their child while standing on two feet!!! Another thing is that their claws are big and long to help them clamp better on trees. And they do have thin fur coats as Malaysia is a hot and humid country...so year, access skin on their bum do show up more when they were standing
@@ghostladydarkling3250 one more thing, the size of their mouth is not big but they have really really long tongue (for licking honey and eating fruits off trees)...they have the longest tongue amongst the bear to I think....ahh, if only they gave them something to eat in the video then you know its a real one..cus trust me... Their long tongue looked a bit creepy especially when it is hanging out. They are kinda like a real live pokemon.

It's definitely a sun bear. I've watched numerous videos that show the same distinctive wrinkles on their backs. While they might be slightly smaller, there's no doubt they are bears.
World's smallest bear, so the ability to stand upright and reach fruit in trees is one of those bear necessities.

The posture of the “bear” seems unlikely to actually be a bear.

To be fair, Chinese zoos have been caught quietly substituting animals before. But yeah this is absolutely a real bear, and this species is extremely intelligent and has been known to mimic human body language like waving to people.

1. There are 2 slits in the front that look like zipper pockets. Rewatch the video, and look at the front view of the bear. You will see / \ on the chest area. Looks like zipper pockets to me.

How can this be news? It's so painfully obvious that it's a bear. I guess the abundance of information has a lot of people confused. People who are unable to distinguish between fact and fiction due to a lack of information filtering skills. I think it should be a subject taught in schools.
The problem is the second hand edited video and pictures. Influencers and selfmedias want as much attention as possible, thus they create all sorts of materials with big titles but in which the real information become less and less and very misleading.

I saw an Attenborough special that said that China is in fact preserving a giant portion of the country for wildlife. I would like to think that saving the sun bear would not be an issue as long as no hunters or poachers get in.
Sun bear is native to ASEAN (southeast asian) countries though....

The bears enclosure is not great and it could have gone man due to the constant human attention and small habitat. In the wild they need miles to roam. Also the native bear loves foliage for hiding where this poor bear has only fake rock.

I absolutely believe that’s a real bear. Reason why: I used to work at a meat processing place that processed both retail & wild game meat during hunting season. The very first bear carcass I saw was upon walking into the facility early one morning. The owner had already skinned the bear & had it hanging (right side up) on the hooks in the cooler. Come to find out a skinned bear carcass looks pretty nearly identical to the human form. The owner knew this and also knew I had never seen a skinned bear. So, purely for shock value & a good laugh on his part seeing my reaction…there hung a skinned bear during that year’s hunting season. 😵
And he will reap what he sowed. Hunting for the most part is justification for trigger happy individuals to kill shoot things thinking it's alright. Not realize there cursing their own land's. The idea generally man, trying to control an animal specie's is the consequence of them destroying their land.
Development, Deforestation, Grazing lands for more profit.
And pollution. The U.S. almost finished off their Wolf's, Beaver's, Groundhogs raccoons among more. They had to reintroduce these animals that ignorant an stupid these individuals where.
That's a great story but now we're left wondering how you know what a skinned human looks like and we're too scared to ask

Not entirely sure if my decades in nursing had me immediately doing a flashback to all those anatomy classes we all took with so many full color drawings of the human body…esp. the ones used to identify the muscles. 😉🧐😅.
