The “it was a different time” argument that many like to throw around is also weak, considering we have historical writings of people calling out bigotry in the past, ergo its immorality was clearly understood.

King louis is not racist, he’s literally a talking Orang Utang, who is voiced by someone with an incredible voice
Disney was going to cast Louie Armstrong but they didn’t because they didn’t want to have controversy of a black man voicing an ape, so they got Louie Prima instead, who is Italian.

In all fairness, "savages" is sang by both the english settlers AND the natives. The idea of the song was to enforce the fact that both sides saw the other as uncivilized, savage, murderous and dangerous.
Yip. Very one sided this list. I even realised it as a kid that both sides saw each other as evil and caused a war. A lot of this hatred for each other is still present today, but only one side gets called the villian, while the other side's hatred is bing celebrated or called justified. No one is trying to find a common ground and trying to get to the bottom of the hatred on both sides. I got the message of Savages loud and clear, but it seems the message was lost on Watch Mojo.

@@srbrant5391 I might be more inclined to agree if I didn't remember the natives were massacring, and enslaving each other before the colonists even got here. Heck the natives teamed up with the colonists in some cases to wipe out their enemies. When people start to grow up and realize that history is full of atrocities committed by all cultures and people we can start to move forward with making things better, rather than playing the blame game and stop finding reasons to hate each other. I'm this day and age most people don't give a shit what anyone else is doing as long as it's not forced upon anyone else.
Wow, you completely missed the point of Savages. It's sung by BOTH sides and they're BOTH reducing the other side to "savages" and we're supposed to hate how they're both letting their fear and hatred drive them to war.
Also, King Louie was voiced by Louis Prima and is using HIS style of music.

‘Savages’ did have obviously racist lyrics but that was kind of the point - they’re demonstrating xenophobia on BOTH sides based on their fears & ignorance & given the time period of the film is pretty accurate to how the colonists would have reacted to Native American tribes. So given the context of the film, I wouldn’t call it inappropriate as it’s demonstrating the evils of racism (at least that’s what I got from it)

I watched that movie in theather when I was a kid, watched it again a couple of years ago. I think finding something offensive with the hyenas is just making a storm out of a glass of water. The only controversy so far that I remember about that movie is a scene in which dust from Simba´s paw forms a word and some people say it spells S F X and others say it spells S E X.

I was thinking this too. More so, when looking at the song “Savages,” historically speaking, Europeans who came over and “claimed” the land, did see the natives as “savages” simply based on how they lived. That being said, the song was a brilliant way to express how each side saw the other and their reasons why.
As for The Lion King, hyenas in general, in a natural sense, are considered outcasts. The are scavengers who would steal fresh kills from those who did the work. They are mean and vicious. And as scavengers, it would make sense for them to be living in a place where creatures go to die. For them that would be an easy meal.
I saw nothing racist about either of these, and I saw nothing racist about King Louie from The Jungle Book, because of the inspiration for him, and because of who voiced him.

The crows in Dumbo? At a time when films were banned in the South because White and Black actors were on film as equals, Disney cast 4 very talented Black singers as the Crows ( including Scatman Cruthers). The story was the Crows saved Dumbo, accepting him and giving him the Magic Feather. The end shot of the film is the crows traveling with Dumbo, becoming his best friends
They actually don't travel with him. They land on a lamppost and wave goodbye in the last shot, while agreeing that they should have gotten Dumbo's autograph. Also, Jim, the lead crow, was played by a white actor. However, the crows were heroes and encouraged Dumbo in learning to fly.

I feel like the Hyenas in “The Lion King” being viewed as problematic is silly. The script existed before any voice actors auditioned and the hyenas are hyenas and aren’t being used to represent an actual social class because they’re animals. They are supposed to represent the bottom of the food chain as hyenas are scavengers who feed on carcasses or prey on the weak in large groups. Also, I don’t think the actors would’ve agreed to play the part if they thought they were racist in any way.
Exactly. There’s documentary footage of hyenas having rivalries with lions over food and territory. Plus they’ve been shown to gang up on individual lions.
I think you need to give it another watch my guy. If you can't see that the hyenas are clearly meant to be thinly veiled depictions of humans then you need to educate yourself. And this is just one of MANY Disney movies that have animals playing gross imitations of humans... Most of which are in harmful and problematic stereotypes of humans. Rather than use the moment to educate children on human culture, they choose to denigrate an entire group of people for laughs. Everyone has seen this movie dozens of times I don’t need to give it another watch to understand that the movie consists of drawings of animals voiced by an assortment of actors as a form of entertainment generally created for children. The hyenas exist in a lower class in the film…and stay with me here…because they are scavengers who are generally known for eating the scraps and remains left behind by other predators such as … Lions. And what group of people are they denigrating here exactly? Are they thinly veiled imitations of humans who are viewed as lower simply because they are voiced by minorities? If that’s the case could you explain why Mufasa, Sarabi, Young simba and Nala are all voiced by minority actors? That would mean both the highest class of people and the lower class of people are occupied by minorities which would indicate what exactly? The argument doesn’t even make sense when you think about it for more than 2 seconds. “This is why I hate people like you who categorize people into groups that they hate” who did I categorize into a group at any time? Honestly, at best you could make the argument that this is a social class situation and the lower class is depicted as unintelligent, deceitful and disreputable. But this class system is based strictly on who is the most powerful and respected in this case. From there you could maybe make a case that the hierarchy that exists is inherently racist… towards hyenas… in the animal Kingdom…But then you might realize that it’s an animated film about talking animals and Lion royalty. Disney has created plenty of racist content throughout the years which is clearly indicated by this list. The Lion King just isn’t one of those projects
and they mention 2 people that were hispanic and black depicting the "low life" characters, but Mufasa, Rafiki, Sarabi and Nalas voice actors were all black. so it has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the race of the characters themselves.

Racism is taught. I NEVER once took offence to any of the Siamese cats in Lady and Tramp or Aristrocats growing up. I appreciated the representation.
As for "Aladdin", the lyric that was changed was "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face", which was replaced by "Where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense".
But they kept "it's barbaric". I've seen a kids' version on stage where they substituted "it's a furnace".

I feel like there's alot of blatant one-sideness towards King Louie in The Jungle Book. King Louie is inspired character from Louie Armstrong who was VERY popular at the time, and originally he was suppose to be voice actor for King Louie but, Disney had cold feet to idea since, it would come off as racist. Louie Prima ended up with the role and he lived in same state/area as Armstrong, so he would have similar accent as such. But he was Italian and not African American. Entire scene is nod to 60s Jazz music explosion, plus it's not making fun of any race at all. The monkeys were chaotic in the novels aswell and King Louie is wanting to possess the knowledge of fire. People just love setting false narrative.

Allot of people don't know that Pocahontas was voiced by an actual Native American woman, Irene Bedard ... Sadly she has had a rough life after the film, but I think the importance of her being cast is highly underrated.. Disney could have easily hired a white woman to voice Pocahontas but instead gave it to a relatively unknown Native American actress. Even if the script was super fabricated, I respect Disney for doing that.
About the Aladdin video, a woman from the Middle East was beaten and ended dying because she wasn’t wearing the hajib. So yeah, those lyrics are pretty spot on.

The Lion King is a stretch. This is just someone on a fucking power trip trying to find any reason to call Disney out as racist (which they definitely were at one point)
Think about it, we’re just going to ignore James Earl Jones’ part as Mufasa, Rafiki - Robert Guillaume, Sarabi - Midge Sinclair, Young Nala - Niketa Harris, and fucking Nathan Lane as Timon. This is inclusion at its finest, not a poor depiction of minority stereotypes because of the nationality of their voice actors/actresses.

Honestly, half of these aren't nearly as bad as they're made out to be, and a good bit of the other half I still like watching like the native Americans from Peter Pan with the catchiest song (granted can feel a bit collar tugging at one or two moments.) and the crows from Dumbo who taught him how to fly.
Yes, the crows were a bit insensitive and rude, but they actually encouraged Dumbo. He wouldn't even try to fly until they gave him a "magic" feather to give him confidence.

The thing about Si and Am is that actual thai people (Siam is the former name of Thailand) find the song funny specifically because siamese cats were bred too guard the palace of the king and they're kind of known for being loud foul tempered aggressive and mean.

I would choose the word 'outdated'. For it was another time, beliefs were different back then and people didn't see a problem with it. Instead of trying to get rid of what is negative to us now of what the movie had, it should be put into context, explaining why people saw it that way and how it was okay back then wasn't now. If we try to forget, we can't learn anything.

I’m so sick of people commenting on how racist old films were when only certain scenes are picked out and criticized without giving full context of the time, setting, and cultural setting of the film. Guess what what happened then hasn’t stopped today. Why don’t you talk about current movies that are racist today because that’s the standard we as viewers have today. Don’t judge the past learn from it.
What I find interesting is the blatant one-sidedness of No. 10 “Savages” Pocahontas. The narrator goes on about how terribly offensive the lyrics are and how demeaning to the native Americans the whole song is, HOWEVER, cut out completely are all the parts where the opposite side (the Indians) are calling the exploring white people savages and how they are also barely even human. Intermixed with all the back and forth is a beautiful hopeful message about how Pocahontas is desperately trying to save John Smith and overcome all the hate that has befallen both sides.
I am not one to usually comment on such clips but when there is such a blatant attempt at making something sound and seem racist, I find myself compelled to speak up. Also, for arguments sake, if the song is all the things purported to be, it certainly was true of both sides not just the “evil white people” as the message tries to convey here.
Exactly, the song is about how both sides refuse to look past their assumptions and prejudice, it’s reflective of their fears/motivations to fight. It was a stupid choice to put it on the list 🤦♀️

Exactly. Straight after the settlers sing the line they showed here, they cut to the Native Americans saying almost the EXACT. SAME. THING about the settlers. Isn't that one of the central parts of Pocahontas, questioning who the real "savages" are, and emphasising how a different culture does not make a different species.

The entire point of the song savages was to show that both sides see each other as not human and think of each other as lesser creatures both showing that they view the other as different but from the audience perspective showing that they are more alike than they think they are.

As mixed women who grew up in the black community, I think it’s important that list exist. Growing up, all I ever heard from other black people is how racists everyone is towards black people. And here I am thinking, “But what about the Jews, the Chinese, Native Americans, and the Mexican?” 🤔 Hell, there were even negative stereotypes about other white people like the Russians and German. For example, there is scene in Fantasia where they are mocking a traditional Russian dance and it follows after the racist Chinese mushroom scene. 🤦🏽♀️So, sometimes I wish black people would remember that we don’t have hold the monopoly on discrimination, prejudice, and racism. Nearly every race has a negative stereotype against it and Disney has clearly been racist towards everyone. Of course, that doesn’t make the racism okay, but I’m just trying to make a point.
Also, completely disagree with some of Mojo’s selections on this list, namely the animal characters like the Hyenas, the black fish, and King Louie. Personally, I don’t get offended by animal characters. They’re animals, after all, and just because some of these animals were voiced by people of color doesn’t mean that the characters were meant to be caricatures of the people voicing them. And I really don’t understand why “Savages” is on the list. If anything, I feel like Savages should be praised for showing nuance about touching subjects and how Both sides were stewing in their hatred instead of trying to find common ground. This song taught me that ANYBODY could be racist and that we ALL must work to bury the racism in our own hearts if we’re ever going to move forward in unity together. So, take note, BLM. 😒 You don’t end racism by painting one race as inherently evil and the other race as an inherently, innocent victim. You show both sides of the argument, you convince both sides to forgive, and you encourage both sides to move forward in unity and peace. ❤
LOL The voice of the Orangutan King Louis is not a negative black portrayal at all! It's Louis Prima, a famous jive singer who is Italian and white. That was his voice and not a put-on. He sang the original "Just a Gigolo".

My family is part thai and never heard anyone complain about the movie and known thai people who like it. The country was known as Siam for a long time and ironically enough changed its name to Thailand due indirectly to colonialism/imperialism: they wanted to modernize the country and that meant emulating the West and the King of Siam saw that a lot of western countries followed the Germanic tradition of calling your country ___land like EngLAND, DeutschLAND, ScotLAND so he called the country Thailand but the name Siam and Siamese were commonly used for a long time before that and the names were still in common use afterwards. Siamese cats are a symbol of Thailand and Siamese twins were too. For the 1950s it wasnt bad at all and even by todays standards it's not that offensive so much as it relies on NOW tired stereotypes, but stereotypes wear out with age and the movie is nearly 70 years old so of course parts of it arent going to age well but to be racist there usually needs to be some maliciousness or hatred.

I watched all of these old films when I was a kid. At the height of the dictatorial Martial Rule here in my country, me and my fellow children cope by watching these films. As an Asian, I don't find these as "Racist" at all. The "We Are Siamese" and "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat" were some of the most wonderful songs we've heard especially the latter, which is very catchy.
As for the Commando Duck, it was a propaganda film during WW2. Obviously the Anti-Japanese Sentiment during WW2 were rampant even after the war so can you really blame them? Do you really expect the US to put out something that puts their enemy in a good light? No, because it was a propaganda film during the WW2. Instead of hiding these films, they must be shown to the newer generations as a reminder of how far have we gotten as a society.

Honestly, I agree with both statements here. Propaganda isn't meant to paint the "others" in a good light, even German films had their own that says that everyone was against them. I'm sure Italy and Japan had their own, too. Heck, if we're talking about other companies, Warner Brothers had their own barrage of propaganda as well. So, to bury it in general, like it never happened, is ludacris, in my opinion. It shows the mindset of the people at that time, the fears they all had, and honestly, the animation and how much it has improved over time.
I also agree with at least putting a disclaimer at the beginning to say that these films were a product of their times and that they don't reflect on the views and opinions the company holds nowadays.
Nothing pisses me off more than people losing it over who voiced a character. The whole point of animation is it doesn't matter what you look like. Max G put it best in "The Apu that i know". A black guy can play a Japanese Samurai complete with a fake accent, a black woman can be an incan alchemist/priestest, and a hispanic can play an Austrailian Walloby. In Looney Tunes, a bunch of white people found issue with Speedy Gonzales, he was removed, and hispanics demanded he be brought back. They said there was nothing wrong with him. My grandfather was very native Americans and didn’t take offense to any of that stuff. His favorite foot ball team was the Red Skins, because of the name and the logo.

It also helps to keep in mind When each of these pieces were released. While they may be seen as offensive today, it helps to remember that they are caricature. The Siamese Cat from Aristocats is one of my favorites from Scat Cat's gang.

I thought the whole point of the song-and the whole movie-was to show audiences that the term “savage”has always been a matter of cultural perspective, and that the only way we’ll get along as humans is if we begin to look past racial and ethic differences and see one another as fellow human beings.

The authentic actors that portrayed some of these characters still took the job. Aladdin still has the violent line "rip him open take it back guys" when we meet the main character. Siam no longer even existed when Lady and the Tramp came out lol 😝

Yo Pocahontas is dope! When it came out I was a young boy and in my eyes, it was a girl movie. But I have a daughter now and we watched it. I was genuinely moved by "colors of the wind" and the song where both sides are calling each other savages.

I remember watching The AristoCats as a kid and, looking back, Shun Gon playing the piano with chopsticks is utterly hilarious - "Chopsticks" is a common piece that kids learn during piano lessons
and I recently watched "Peter Pan" and couldn't stop laughing during "What Made the Red Man Red"!

Among all these Disney animated films listed (not counting the shorts) I’ve seen as a kid, I saw nothing stereotypically bad about them and just saw them as pure entertainment. As an adult nowadays, it’s now a compilation of Disney cinematic history.

The crows in Dumbo are some of the few characters that are nice to Dumbo
what's lost, especially if you see the Tim Burton remake, is the crows are key to getting Dumbo to believe in himself and fly- hell, one of their feathers gives him that ability in the first place! Without the crows, there's really no point to Dumbo-

I just watched all 60 Disney Classics last month and noticed something else. There is not a single human black character (non-animal) in any of the films until Fantasia 2000 (1999). There's the black muses that sing as a Greek chorus in Hercules but you don't get a black human character with dialog until Atlantis.
