You run just about as hard as you can...and then you still have to do another lap. You tie up in the last 150m and your legs feel like they're being crushed 5 miles beneath sea level and simultaneously being roasted inside the sun. If you're doing it correctly, you see double and your lungs feel like they're bleeding. When you get it wrong, you can barely move in the finishing straight and everyone passes you. Rudisha ran the absolute perfect half mile race anyone will ever do and he looked completely effortless. I'm not religious but watching this makes me believe in something!

8 years later I still get goose bumps watching this race. Greatest 800m race and it happened in our lifetime. Thank you to David Rudisha and all the athletes that ran this beautiful race.
From this video, I can see how being humble can take you very far. Somebody look at the way Rudisha was behaving before the race. He was the most humble and composed athlete. God bless you Rudisha.
If you only watch one 800m final - this is the one to watch. I doubt if anyone will take on two laps and make it look as easy as this guy. Breathtaking performance.
I almost feel bad for you if your life is so pathetic that you feel the need to make a disgusting racist comment about the fastest man this planet has ever seen. lmfao jealous much?
That makes no sense……! "The Man"………. I mean Bolt has only broken the World record like 9 times: 100, 200 & 4 x 100m- not to mention the unprecedented TRIPLE-TRIPLE! Wake me up when Rudisha puts up those stats..... Great runner- ABSOLUTELY! Fantastic in fact..... But calling him "The Man" is a bit outlandish....😳
+Brandon Jackson Obviously he can run a faster 100 time and faster 400 time considering its less distance. I'm saying the pace he is running for in the 800 isn't much slower than the records for the 400 per lap. So he is pretty much sprinting 2 laps.
6.5M views as of 6/2019, and it feels like I'm responsible for half of them. Seriously, though, this is an all-time great performance and not solely because of Rudisha's dominance. Top to bottom, the best 800m ever run.
@darrellid it's 8.5M now, January 2021. I came back here just to watch this race, to those words "its fast...this could indeed be something very special... it's quick, very quick...that Olympic record is set to go!....wow we have something very very special on here!...the teenagers are closing in ...none of them are good enough to hold on to him!...we are going to be looking at the time very very closely... what's the time? it's a world recoooord!"
What I remember about this race was the interview after and he said the words somewhere along the lines of "It was a beautiful day, and I said "just go for it".....it was one of the most stirring things I heard from an athlete. He deserved his win.
I remember watching this at the time and crying. My Mum had heard on the Irish radio that we all had to watch this amazing Maasai runner trained by an Irishman who was just a missionary who went to Kenya in the 70s. Rudisha is an amazing athlete in a time of so many people cheating.
I remember watching this race when I had a very difficult academic challenge. Literally teared up at Rudisha performance and it gave me the spirit to win. Got a distinction. The focus, preparation and talent was incredible to watch.
i remember watching this back in 2012, with my campus mates and the moment he got to the bell and the commentator said its fast, we were up on our feet others on top of seats shouting world record coz we knew something special was about to unfold. And to think of it, no one was concerned about Kitum in 3rd only to realize later in the standings he was actually a bronze medalist was absolutely incredible. 4 years later i still comeback to this piece and it brings back the memories. Lovely!
Why are so may people always trying to put everybody above Bolt. Rudisha is the greatest 800m runner ever and I greatly admire him, especially because this was my distance. However, how can he be above Bolt? Bolt does not run 800ms and furthermore, Bolt runs more races (100m, 200m, 4x100m) and is a champion in all at all times. Your logic is beyond irrational.
So this is what my old coach meant when he used to tell me, "You need to jump back on it right after the first lap." Most amazing 800 performance I've ever seen.
Yeah - I keep watching that point at the 500 where you look at the runners behind and they are caning it ( and straining) but not keeping up and Rudisha is going away effortlessly - he did fade a little over the last 150 but as he said his legs were tired from the earlier races but by then it was too late. When you see a world record after running so many races against quality fields before the final its truly impressive.
To me, the most impressive part of Rudisha's performance is his face at 4:30. He's running at WR pace for over 500M and his face looks exactly the same. He doesn't look like he's in pain or that he's anxious. He just looks 100% dialed in on breaking the record.
Truly remarkable. When someone like that comes along and makes others perform greater.. An entire field surpassing what most think is possible. You watch the olympics for great competition, but also for the chance that someone truly remarkable, or someones, might make their presence known on the world stage.
Gotta feel a bit for Amos here. Imagine what he must have thought after running that time at his age. He must have thought he'd break the record. To think he's still one of the world leading 800m runners and still hasn't surpassed this time that he ran at 18 years old.
It was also likely that he wasn’t actually 18 during this race, it happens a lot with East African runners as many don’t keep track of exactly how old they are and I know for a fact that the national Kenyan track committee encourages the athletes to roam on the younger side of that margin of error to dominate the world Junior championships.
Riccardo Giovetti yep but he sadly hasn’t improved since then which makes me doubt the legitimacy of his age. We know he’s an incredible athlete but what kind of middle distance runner peaks at 18
@@nohands6865 for example Borzakowski peaked at 20, even though he won the olympics at 23, he never ran under 1'42"47 after 2001. I mean, i get your point, it's possible that Amos is 2/3 years older, but i'd say no more than that.
@@nohands6865 Your comment has no credibility what so ever and even worse you cant even get his region correct. Amos is a South West African because Botswana, the country that he is from , is not anywhere close to Kenya... dumbass.

After the Olympics, kitum told us that Rudisha told him before the race that he was going for a killer pace, he advised him not to follow him but to run his race...
A decade on now and I still haven't seen a better race. A world record in an Olympic final, leading an 800 wire to wire... absurd. Rudisha is a legend forever

Makes me happy because I know Nick Symmonds and it was suprise seeing him here
Jammy he was last and kicked at the end to pass like 4 people i was so happy
I’ve watched this video before and I never noticed nick symmonds it’s nice seeing him here
Maybe he should've hit that NOS 50 meters earlier if he had a spare tank.
Bro I was let’s go Nick!!!
Sankha Widuranga Kulathantille yeah could’ve squeezed in 3rd place
8 years later I still get goose bumps watching this race. Greatest 800m race and it happened in our lifetime. Thank you to David Rudisha and all the athletes that ran this beautiful race.
Well the secret is clearly not to wear bright green shoes
Robert Hintz no secret in athlete. its all about attitude and hardwork
hahaaaaaa.....
do u agree with me sus.
+Lenairoshi Lecard you are dumb. he was obviously joking. just look at all of their spikes
lol
From this video, I can see how being humble can take you very far. Somebody look at the way Rudisha was behaving before the race. He was the most humble and composed athlete. God bless you Rudisha.
But who saw the white bro go from last to 5th in the last 50m
He does it every race I think, I saw him go from second to last to first.
now he is a TH-camr
Another 50m and he might have gotten that bronze!
Wow! Yeah that was great😍❤️
@@papillonvu given that he has enough gas left for another 50m. That looked like his final burst.
If you only watch one 800m final - this is the one to watch. I doubt if anyone will take on two laps and make it look as easy as this guy. Breathtaking performance.
This is still the race I go back to for motivation. I live near the Olympic stadium and every time I go by I think of Rudisha setting the WR there.
wat do u need the inspiration for? wat are u aiming for? 800 also?
Nice comment
We love you Rudisha....all the way from Nairobi Kenya...uve made our country proud of you....God bless you
Every single person ran the fastest time they have ever run! Amazing!
That's how good rudisha is. Putting such an incredible pace.
that really is amazing!
Rudisha has the most aesthetically pleasing running form ive seen, so smooth
Rudisha and Alyson Felix are such a joy to watch when they run. Probably the most graceful runners I have ever seen.
embe1 graceful 😊😊
Good eye, I totally agree. Right up there with Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens.
and bekele :D
Absolutely.
Watch Wilson kipketer and haile gebreselassie.
Bolt is great, Phelps is great....But Rudisha is THE MAN.
Right
I almost feel bad for you if your life is so pathetic that you feel the need to make a disgusting racist comment about the fastest man this planet has ever seen. lmfao jealous much?
That makes no sense……! "The Man"………. I mean Bolt has only broken the World record like 9 times: 100, 200 & 4 x 100m- not to mention the unprecedented TRIPLE-TRIPLE! Wake me up when Rudisha puts up those stats..... Great runner- ABSOLUTELY! Fantastic in fact..... But calling him "The Man" is a bit outlandish....😳
Bolt doesn't have to run as hard as he can for 800meters. Rudisha does. The 800 is for real men. I would know I run it
Richy M,
God forgives. I believe that he will forgive you as a result of your vile comment. Just seek his forgiveness and his grace.
Wow, what an unbelievable stride.
Cc. jup
Unbelievable. What a race. Lost count how many times I have watched this.
Shout out to the Commentator. He was also at is best.
Rudisha is incredible! He is literally sprinting half a mile!
its not sprinting just a good pace
He sprinted it
+Brandon Jackson No its sprinting
+Jordan Shaw so you telling me his fastest 100 time are fastest 400 time, he can keep that pace the whole time. yeah right
+Brandon Jackson Obviously he can run a faster 100 time and faster 400 time considering its less distance.
Hahaaaa that makes two of us. I watch this a lot 😂
I watch this almost twice a week....loves when the commentator says "it's quick really quick"
Me included
@darrellid it's 8.5M now, January 2021. I came back here just to watch this race, to those words "its fast...this could indeed be something very special... it's quick, very quick...that Olympic record is set to go!....wow we have something very very special on here!...the teenagers are closing in ...none of them are good enough to hold on to him!...we are going to be looking at the time very very closely... what's the time? it's a world recoooord!"
The words I wait for is,
"it's a world reeecoord, a world reeecoord!"
Still watching in October 2019...Rudisha you will go down history as the world's best of all times.
What I remember about this race was the interview after and he said the words somewhere along the lines of "It was a beautiful day, and I said "just go for it".....it was one of the most stirring things I heard from an athlete. He deserved his win.
Today, 8 years ago. When we need something to cheer us up, we come here to watch this race
Me too bro, me too
Absolutely
You are not alone ndugu.
Same with me🤗
You're so right bro. I never log out of you tube without watching this race.
The 800 is the hardest event in my opinion
3000m steeplechase?
***** It's either the 400m or 800m for me.
800 is THE most intense race and the 3000 steeple chase is the most difficult IMO. 400 meter hurdles is difficult as well.
***** agreed
Fox McCloud The're all tough, but think of this, first 400 in sub 50, 2nd 400 51, My God, that is insane, most track athletes would love 1 sub 50.
I remember watching this at the time and crying. My Mum had heard on the Irish radio that we all had to watch this amazing Maasai runner trained by an Irishman who was just a missionary who went to Kenya in the 70s. Rudisha is an amazing athlete in a time of so many people cheating.
l
Franx K true dear, thats how we do in kenya, clean no cheating.
What cheating? There are drug tests.
Great strides
Great strides
Lovely!
Maxaa _ don't you're still a zoomali
Best 800 meters ever run by a human being. Hopefully this record stays for a long long time as a tribute of Rudisha´s greatness
No ego, no disrespect for the opponent just pure sportsmanship among them all. Love it.
I keep coming back and just can't grasp how incredible this was
Rudisha's performance deserved a lot more recognition. I agree with Coe, I put it above Bolt's, who was far from the form of his 2008 or 2009 season.
Ryan Birkmeier 800m is not really a distance event. It’s not like he’s running a 10k. You can run a 800 and be perfectly fine in less than 20 minutes.
TheSupermanFilms have you ran it?...
Ryan Birkmeier I run it and it and I still feel it an hour later , in my opinion I think it hurts more than a 400m Haha
800 is for people who are neither fast or have stamina lol gfy, you wish you have the talent to run fast.
I’ve said it before and will say it again, this commentator’s voice is absolutely perfect. Exceptional narration. Good to you sir.
"...and it's a world recoooord by a hugeee margin" Him after the US women broke the 4x100m WR.
What's his name BTW?
@@ucheogu5790 idk but he’s been doing it for years. I’ve heard him in older events
The kick around the 500 meter mark as they come off the turn is really something to see...he just pulls the field behind him like a freight train
Even left the camera behind...haha
The 300m left kick is a thing of beauty
He just looks 100% dialed in on breaking the record.
who is here watching this in 2019? RUDISHA is a beast!!!!!!
Me !!!!
Me
Pause at 5:01 the world record is actually 1:40.8
My Dog is faster He need 1 minut and 12 Seconds 🤣
Meeeee.. Am a kenyan
I get emotional by watching this video. We are truly amazing beings and it´s so wonderful seeing these athletes proving it.
True
Quite indeed
Say that❤
Truly remarkable. When someone like that comes along and makes others perform greater.. An entire field surpassing what most think is possible. You watch the olympics for great competition, but also for the chance that someone truly remarkable, or someones, might make their presence known on the world stage.
11 years on and I am still in AWE of this run. Absolutely incredible.
Rudisha's stride length is 8.5 foot (2.6 meters)! Truly amazing!
i just realised the guy who won silver Timothy Kiptum is married to Faith Kipyegon a world recorder in 1500m women
Faith breaking more records
Not silver but bronze,timothy kitum
Gotta feel a bit for Amos here. Imagine what he must have thought after running that time at his age. He must have thought he'd break the record. To think he's still one of the world leading 800m runners and still hasn't surpassed this time that he ran at 18 years old.
It was also likely that he wasn’t actually 18 during this race, it happens a lot with East African runners as many don’t keep track of exactly how old they are and I know for a fact that the national Kenyan track committee encourages the athletes to roam on the younger side of that margin of error to dominate the world Junior championships.
@@nohands6865 still got a 1'41"89 last year
Riccardo Giovetti yep but he sadly hasn’t improved since then which makes me doubt the legitimacy of his age.
Amos is a South West African because Botswana, the country that he is from , is not anywhere close to Kenya... dumbass.
I’ve watched athletics since the 70s and I can confidently say that this was the most perfect race ever run. Beauty from start to finish.
Really
The last place guy in this race would have won gold in Tokyo by 20 meters for that time.
Weather conditions make a huge difference
@@cursebr2937 then explain in 2017 the winning time in 800 was 1'44. Same stadium, same weather, same conditions.
What happened in 2012 is EVERYONE motivates everyone else to push, push, push, hence the WR and fastest last-placed time.
Hearing that crowd showed me what we’re missing in Tokyo, 2021.
I feel for the Olympians this year, having to compete in nearly empty venues.
Imagine getting a time of 1:42.82 and NOT medalling! 😳
Heck, the last place runners time of 1:43.77 is still a world class time! Insane race!
Never anyone like Rudisha before or since, he glides with power. This is the pinnacle.
kenyans we are proud of him
Very he won again this morning #rio2016
We are.
Very much proud of him
Pause at 5:01 the world record is 1:40.8
I watched this and started training after only 10 months of training I got a 1:50 800m! Thanks for your inspiration Rudisha
Can’t stop watching this - the greatest race ever!
amongst all this chaos, Botswana got its first ever medal at an Olympic Games
His stride for the last 100m. Oh my god. He takes like 40 steps!!! His stride is immaculate
Ok...
Yes, i totally agree, .. rudisha has such a beautiful stride n grace over 2rds at the olympic final. Really awesome olympic final. Tks 4 video.
Nick Symmonds had one hell of a kick there. He passed around 3 people on the home stretch.
He paced himself at the start, everyone else took off
Perfect !!!!!! Absolutely fantastic !!!!!!
After the Olympics, kitum told us that Rudisha told him before the race that he was going for a killer pace, he advised him not to follow him but to run his race...
Sit and Kick!!!
I think it’s hilarious how it’s all tall, slim, black guys and then there’s Nick - the short, bulky, white guy.
Nick is built like a tank
🤣🤣🤣🤣
The bison!
I mean there were Aman and Amos, maybe include Kitum, but yeah, Symmonds stands out.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
God damn his legs are so long it doesn't even look like he's running full speed cause his strides are so long.
Mine are longer and I can't do that. It's about hard work and a powerful mind.
@@NegSteLucie Well, it probably helps if your father was an Olympic gold medallist in the 4 x 400.
Still gives me chills....8 x 12.5 second 100m sprints in a row. The toughest race in track and field in my book
12.62 - But think on this - 13.73 x 15 for the WR in the 1500m.
@@benjaminpease5297 Yeah, but what about 11.48 x 4 with 10 HURDLES. Didn't think about that did ya? :)
A decade on now and I still haven't seen a better race. A world record in an Olympic final, leading an 800 wire to wire... absurd. Rudisha is a legend forever
I return to this race every few months when I need a pick-me-up. The best race of all time.
Rudisha's stride pattern/gate is not human!
that's why he has the record
Yeah that's right man!
Gait
It is extremely human. You spend the first years of your life without shoes and learn to feel the ground and move naturally, and you might have a more human-like stride as well.
***** I don't consider myself ignorant. I'm not saying his performance or time is not human just his stride pattern. The back lift alone leaves me in awe as a former US Division 1 collegiate athlete. I never understand the need for rude responses
Beyond the obvious superlatives about Rudisha, he has one of THE most beautiful forms I’ve ever seen. Just looks so graceful.
His strides were so strong and perfect from beginning to the end what a run...one of the greatest
The last 200/300m of the race, it is honestly unbelievable how these guys are putting a close to sprint pace whilst their bodies are so tired and dragging across the field with perfect form> Truly amazing.
8:12
Rudisha: Go play son, this is my world record
Kitum: ok dad
Michael Westen 😂😂😂😂👍😀
😂😂😂😂
Michael Westen haha
😂😂😹😹😹😂😂was looking for this
I swear I saw that just as I was reading your comment 😂😂😂😂
He was my class mate it's 2021 still watching I was with him in the same high school I was the class prefect form 2005_2008 thank you Rudisha thank you I have never achieved what you have but you still remember when I told you that you will be great ...he was clueless in form one he did not know he could run haha I was actually faster than him in 100 and 200 m
If you thought he was clueless in form then, I’m curious what made you tell him he would be great?
@@kevinerry9958 Yes, also he means that Rudisha himself thought he was clueless, i think
Lol... Out of the woodwork...
You kept eating too much as the dude was training 😂😂
@@kibiwottkoross3872 hahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣 there is some truth in your statement becouse I came to Nairobi I got kuku pono
London Olympics had the best crowd.......gosh. the Olympics should be held in England. They cheer for everything and anybody. This alone boost morals. Love love the atmosphere.
Ikr even the world championship the crowd was amazing
In all those years, London 2012 Olympics are one of the best in history❤️
I watch this a lot and it never fails to amaze me. I'm just a midpacker marathoner, but this is just the epitome of strength, power and beauty. It has everything to make it great. A champion who goes for it and leads everyone else to performances they never thought they could achieve. What gets me every time is the faces of the two behind him around 500m. They are DYING!!!! And Rudisha is so smooth and strong.
This is still one of the most beautiful races ever run. I keep coming back to this.
He destroyed the field from gun to tape with no rabbits. Who has ever done this in the two lap event?? This was magical .
Rudisha is the athlete that makes other athletes break their own records
