Excellent! I loved this! This song holds a special significance for me. Back in the mid sixties when I was a sophomore in high school, I was placed in a choir class as it was the only class open in that time slot. I wanted metal shop but it was closed. I never sang before. Before the end of the semester, we had to choose a solo song to sing for a grade. I chose Shenandoah. I practiced the song at home, a cappella, in front of a mirror for hours. On the day of my test I must have done a good job because the choir teacher wanted to be sure that I was coming back to choir for my junior year. And in my senior year, I auditioned and was accepted into the elite Vocal Ensemble. I still enjoy singing today. Not as professional but in various amateur groups. It's safe to say this song changed my life and sent me on a journey of a life long appreciation of music.

I don't live in the USA but when I hear wholesome music like this it reminds of the old America, the one I grew up with. Can we please rewind the clock? Please.
There are small pockets of this left here in America, but you won't ever see it on the news. I wish with all my heart we could go back to this as a nation.
I LOVE this. Shenandoah was the first song that I learned to sing with my Dad- I think I was around 4 years old. I am 70 now, and still love this song. I saw Claudia Schmidt perform this in Rockford Illinois in 1976...about half-way through she broke into tears and had to take a break; that is kind of what this does to me, too. This rendition is way more uptempo than I usually sing it, but I think this is so fantastic!
I just can’t get enough of this family, everything they do they do beautifully and with class, I hope one day to see them live, much love and respect from Australia
What a wonderful rendition of a folk classic. You are all such wonderful musicians. Your harmonies are absolutely exquisite. Katie, your voice just gets lovelier and more sophisticated all the time.
“Shenandoah,” aka “Oh, Shenandoah” is a traditional American folk song dating back to the early 19th century. The real origins and its meaning are uncertain and are still the subject of different interpretations today. The one which, however, I consider most reliable, which is also supported by the text of this version, concerns the evocative song of a beaver hunter (trapper) who undertakes his journey by canoe and goes up the course of the Missouri river, through territories unexplored and dangerous. He invokes Shenandoa “Oskanondonha, known as Skenandoah”, an ancient Indian chief of the Oneida tribe who actually lived between 1710 and 1816 (he would have died at 116 years old!), because, having fallen in love with the daughter of the Indian chief, he undertakes the dangerous journey to earn what he needs and marry her. Basically the song is about this. Shenendoah, in almost all existing versions, is usually performed as a (very) slow ballad, but The Petersens make a much faster bluegrass version of it which, however, is particularly captivating and maintains the evocative sense that this traditional song has. I love this song and I love the way it is performed. As always, thank you! 🙏
I don't know why the TH-cam algorithm showed me your channel but this is exactly what I need in my life right now. The joy you all have sharing your music is amazing.

*LYRICS - Shenandoah*
------------
Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you
Look away rollin' river
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
The Missouri, she's a mighty river
Look away rollin' river
Indians camp along her borders
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Well, a white man, he loved an Indian maiden
Look away rollin' river
And with notions, his canoe was laden
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
And he said, Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Look away rollin' river
And it was for her, I crossed the waters
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Well, it's fair-thee-well*, I'm bound to leave you
Look away rollin' river
Oh Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you
Look away rollin' river
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
(Shenandoah, I long to see you) x3
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you
(Shenandoah) x3
Oh Shenandoah
* Fair-thee-well = farewell
