Shenandoah - The Petersens (LIVE)

- We posted our version of "Shenandoah" six years ago on TH-cam before Emmett was performing with us full-time. The family worked the song up again before traveling to Europe and we decided it was definitely time for a TH-cam refresh.
We had to drive a UTV off-road vehicle to make it to the filming location and mom drew the short straw with Matt as the driver haha.
Enjoy!

►LYRICS - Shenandoah
Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you
Look away rollin' river
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
The Missouri, she's a mighty river
Look away rollin' river
Indians camp along her borders
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Well, a white man, he loved an Indian maiden
Look away rollin' river
And with notions, his canoe was laden
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
And he said, Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Look away rollin' river
And it was for her I crossed the waters
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Well, it's fair-thee-well*, I'm bound to leave you
Look away rollin' river
Oh Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you
Look away rollin' river
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, I'm bound away
Across the wide Missouri
(Shenandoah, I long to see you) x3
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you
(Shenandoah) x3
Oh Shenandoah
* Fair-thee-well = farewell
This song seems to have originated with fur traders who traveled the Missouri River in canoes. Like many traditional folk songs, there are different versions of the lyrics, but these ones refer to a trader falling in love with the daughter of the Oneida chief Shenandoah.
In the mid-1800s, the song made its way down the Mississippi River and became popular as a sea shanty on ships that traveled the world.

@@Liz.Newton Thanks Liz! As always, everything's perfect!! 👍
Ha ha great captions in the outro. People who don't use captions are missing out on all your little gems Liz! Thank you for another outstanding job. Proving again that talented humans are way better (and funnier) than bots. God bless you girl
@@Roberto-pd8vn Perfect is right my friend, Ellen looks like the baby is due any second!!
Thanks for always find lyrics.
Looks like a new addition to the Petersens is on the way.
What a wonderful family for a lucky child to be born into.

Yup, they needed a drummer!!!LOL

I don't live in the USA but when I hear wholesome music like this it reminds of the old America, the one I grew up with. Can we please rewind the clock? Please.
Working on it!
A little island of love and joy in our troubled world. Thank-you, Petersens!
Great version guys!

I don't know why the TH-cam algorithm showed me your channel but this is exactly what I need in my life right now. The joy you all have sharing your music is amazing.
So many different nationalities coming together to appreciate this beautiful, talented family.
Excellent! I loved this! This song holds a special significance for me. Back in the mid sixties when I was a sophomore in high school, I was placed in a choir class as it was the only class open in that time slot. I wanted metal shop but it was closed. I never sang before. Before the end of the semester, we had to choose a solo song to sing for a grade. I chose Shenandoah. I practiced the song at home, a cappella, in front of a mirror for hours. On the day of my test I must have done a good job because the choir teacher wanted to be sure that I was coming back to choir for my junior year. And in my senior year, I auditioned and was accepted into the elite Vocal Ensemble. I still enjoy singing today. Not as professional but in various amateur groups. It's safe to say this song changed my life and sent me on a journey of a life long appreciation of music.
Beautiful story. 👏
First song I listen from this lovely band.
Back in the day I used to listen to John Denver. It's all I have heard off of this musical genre.
Since yesterday I have been hearing to this tune over and over. So far I may be around 50 replays.
Lead voice is subtle, wonderful, awesome.
What they create altogether is superb.
Each instrument is so well played. I have enjoyed specially the guitar, the banjo and the dobro.
The musical arrangements are so masterfuly ellaborated; I can recognize when a bassist is in charge of the harmonic base writing.
The voices in the chorus blend together beautifully.
Another thing and maybe one of the most important is that it is evident and notorious that all of them are enjoying themselves while playing. Such a lovely atmosphere amongst all of them.
“Shenandoah,” aka “Oh, Shenandoah” is a traditional American folk song dating back to the early 19th century. The real origins and its meaning are uncertain and are still the subject of different interpretations today. The one which, however, I consider most reliable, which is also supported by the text of this version, concerns the evocative song of a beaver hunter (trapper) who undertakes his journey by canoe and goes up the course of the Missouri river, through territories unexplored and dangerous. He invokes Shenandoa “Oskanondonha, known as Skenandoah”, an ancient Indian chief of the Oneida tribe who actually lived between 1710 and 1816 (he would have died at 116 years old!), because, having fallen in love with the daughter of the Indian chief, he undertakes the dangerous journey to earn what he needs and marry her. Basically the song is about this.
Shenendoah, in almost all existing versions, is usually performed as a (very) slow ballad, but The Petersens make a much faster bluegrass version of it which, however, is particularly captivating and maintains the evocative sense that this traditional song has. I love this song and I love the way it is performed. As always, thank you! 🙏
Thank you for info
It sounds Irish/Scots Gaelic to me.
@@dannycarter3647 Katie's fiddle playing is very "Irish". 😉
Sound loads better at this speed
Thank you for this information. Very interesting.
I have loved this song for a very long time and this version of the lyrics with Katie singing is amazing.
This is the best versions of this song in my opinion!
I just can’t get enough of this family, everything they do they do beautifully and with class, I hope one day to see them live, much love and respect from Australia
As we used to say back in the 70's, you guys sure can jam.
We still say that now. We learned it back in the 70's. It was a new phrase.
Thank GOD for people like you !!!
Katie this song is certainly in your wheelhouse! You nail it every time! I also love that even though she has to do side picking Ellen is still smiling!
The Petersons are just plain awesome!
This version of an old classic brings it to life in a way that is refreshing and yet somehow still harkens back to the good old days ----- beautiful !!!
Currently working far away from home (5500 miles away), been this way for about two years and I got about two years more. I’ve felt so separated from my loved ones and even from people I can relate to. This song brings me so much joy and reminds me of what I have waiting back home for me. It means a lot to me.
私は日本人です。シェネンドーの歌が大好きです。いい歌です。私はバンジョー弾いてます。応援しています。
The slow version sounds like the trapper is snowed in and can't get out. This version sounds like he got his furs and is heading back for his love.
This is the best cover of this song I've ever heard!!!
Terrific music. Beautiful harmony. Real talent.
You can't see me, but I just gave you a standing ovation! EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE!!!

The Petersens are everything that is right in the USofA
Bluegrass may be a typical American style of folk music, the way the Petersens perform and the love for music and for eachother they radiate, appeals universally.
It's good to be reminded sometimes that tranquility and beauty still exist.

You are my favourite band. Some thing about the family togetherness and the heart warming music. I am 74 and live in Tasmania. I have played guitar ,fiddle, harmonica and ukulele but never at a public performance level. I have made violin and ukes and always wanted be a part of a musical family like yours. I have two brothers who are also great musicians but we don't share our musicality often.
Family is the heart of life keep up the good work you are amazing.

I need to hear you guys every day to bring me to my happy place 😊
I grew up on the Missouri River in North St. Louis County and it truly was a mighty river. With it's 8 mph current and wing dikes, you could drown in that river wearing a life jacket. I saw it happen. This is my all time favorite song and has been since the early Sixties.
Is it still a mighty river? Please, let me know. Thanks.
The Oahe Dam north of Pierre, SD ruined the Missouri river.
