      +ChrisFix my car's windscreen has been chipped since i first got it in 2008 (my fault) your video gave me some confidence to fix it myself and just yesterday i saw an almost identical kit appear on amazon cheaply so i picked it up. just wanted to say thanks for helping me and others repair their own things :)

    I realize this is an old video.... but I just used the Rain-X kit... Worked great. My windshield is amazing. Thank You Chris. My only slight addition to your video would be, if it doesn't seem to fill the whole starburst, just LET IT SIT. Hit it with a heat gun a little maybe. I got a phone call, and when I got back, the crack was totally filled perfect....

    8:14, when you remove the plunger, it can create a vacuum,
    It may help to screw in and remove the plunger a few times to remove air pockets.
    Other tips I saw on YT, is to tap the glass with the wet resin, slight heat from inside from a hairdryer or lighter, and polishing the final cured resin.

    Put a mirror behind the chip on the inside of the screen. This way you can keep an eye on how much pressure you pushing the resin in with the plunger and you can see how well the repair is going as you do it. DO NOT wind the plunger all the way in, especially if you put more resin in as this can force the chip to crack further and completely fuck your screen. Allow the the resin to sit for a few minutes before unwinding plunger to release trapped air. You can repeat the process as many times as you like untill you think it wont improve anymore. Applying some subtle heat from the inside behind chip can help open the glass up and allow the resin to flow in further. DO NOT get too hot. The sooner you fix the chip the better the result. I repair and replace windscreens for a living in the UK. Although this kit he is using is a very basic likeness its nowhere near as good as professional kits. UV lights are used to ensure the resin cures off properly. And pretty sure the tapping on the screen will do fuck all haha

    Chris,
    Very good demonstration and explanation of procedures.
    I appreciate your efforts to help educate everyone.
    The Rain-X product seems ok, but I think I prefer
    the alternate product.
    I've been repairing and replacing autoglass for 30 years and am an NBA certified master tech., so I understand the differences.
    I TOTALLY agree with a previous comment to IMMEDIATELY cover an impacted area after discovery.
    We suggest to use clear Scotch Tape, but a band-aid will work also. Anything you can do to inhibit dirt
    and moisture from infiltrating the impacted area will help produce a better repair.
    Also, when air bubbles are still present, to use a Bic lighter, FOR ONLY A FEW SECONDS, and warm an area twice the size of your impact, will "excite " and expand the air molecules and force them out of the impact, making room for more resin to create a more uniform repair.
    Another thing for everyone to consider, IF you have comprehensive insurance coverage, is that most insurance companies will pay for the repair and waive your deductible if you work with a service provider associated with that particular insurance company.
    Again, great video and very informative. Thanks!
    GO GATES BROTHERS GLASS!

Just make sure you don't have a tinted windshield if you try that... Also, after all these years, at the 1:07 mark, I was smiling. Iykyk.

    A few weeks ago I saw a video about a chip in a windshield. Pushing on the outside of the windshield didn't crack the windshield, not even when they pushed very hard on the chipped area itself. But when they pressed on the chip from within te car the winshield cracked almost immediately. But because this mount is usually on the outside it probably won't further damage your windshield.

    Thank you for making this video. I suffered a star shaped chip right in the centre of my 13 year old Citroen C5 the other day. I bought a RainX kit from the local Repco store. All good until it came to reading and understanding the instructions, something I can struggle with. I found your video and just got on with it. There were some challenges. My car is Accord sized and pretty wide. It has a deceiving slightly convex windshield. The weather was playing around also. I got there though. Very happy with the result. Many thanks once again. Oh, and I've subscribed too....

    Just used the RainX kit and it worked. I have a Safelite repair on the same windshield and was about to do it again until the quote came back at $150. I love the Safelite service, but when I found this video I thought what the hell. If you are willing to do it and listen to the instructions it works. I had a star shaped chip and it filled it. I can see a little of it, but it's the same result from what I can see from a safelite repair on the same windshield.

    If you pull the razor backwards, rather than perpendicular, it takes more strokes, but is less damaging to the resin over the entry hole. Pushing the blade (like when you were cleaning the virgin glass before the repair) takes too big of a bite, and may cause the resin to break rather than become powder. Holding the blade @ 90 degrees like you did isn't bad, and is faster, but doesn't do as good of a job as pulling it at a 60 to 45 degree angle.

      Our insurance policies cover it, but if we choose to make a claim (utilize it), our monthly principle will often go up in price, so it's not worth it to do so on something so minor. There are really expensive monthly policies that would cover it without an increase, but the base monthly price is much much higher. In America, it's only worth having this tier of insurance for new vehicles (unless it's someone else's fault for the damage, in which case THEIR insurance would cover it).

    Amazing vid Chris. Don't understand how 9 people disliked it. I think, there are just some people, who just dislike every video which they come across. And please do post more car cleaning videos, maybe of the interior too!

      Chinmay Gupta Thanks a lot! Yea, I have some people who subscribed just to thumbs down the video. I get the same 9 every video I make lol. Not a big deal as long as it helps the hundreds/thousands of people who thumbs up the video because that is what it is all about!

  • @livebig247
    @livebig247 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay, I see why people gave it a thumbs down. It's probably because the Rain X system sucks. I did it exactly how Chris describe and it did not work for me at all. I bet the Permatex would be awesome because of the vacuum. But thanks Chris for the video anyway

    Hey Chris, just want to mention that I've tried this kit on a spider crack seems like didn't do good. I can still see small cracked though main ones slightly disappear, i think I've followed all the instructions if you can demonstrate this kit on a spider crack i would really appreciate. Thanks!

    I've been an auto-glass tech for 20 years. This is a decent dyi system. Only tip i will add is before you screw the plunger in, heat the chip area from inside with a lighter just so its hot to the touch. usually 10 to 15 seconds. that helps get the air out of the chip by expanding the glass slightly. Just use small circular motions for about 10 to 15 seconds. and don't get that resin on you....its nasty stuff.

      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jim H Thanks a lot Jim! That is a great tip and I really appreciate it! I will have to use that tip in a new video!

      cool deal man. if you watch the chip as you heat it, as soon as you see a change stop heating it. usually takes about 10 seconds or so. just don't get it too hot, or it will deform the laminate. but that would take a lot of heat in one spot. just move the lighter in about a 2 inch circle and you will be fine.

    Hey Chris Fix, just wondering if you could do a video on a trans flush or a window repair? Both need on my car lol. All your videos are tons of help and I look forward to each one, thanks again

    • @sunjaysharma5500

      The window is not rolling up into the grove it is just going straight up and leaving a small gap between the window and the frame. I drive a mustang and there is no door frame for the window. I have yet to open the door up due to wet weather which is just making the window a bigger issue

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sunjay Sharma Gotcha. You are going to have to take the door panel off and put the window back into the guide (or replace the broken guide).

    • @sunjaysharma5500

      ChrisFix Thanks lol I was going to replace the regulator but I guess you saved me 70$

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be the regulator, but if it still goes up and down smoothly, it is probably just popped out of alignment.

    Good. Now I can repair my gray van's windshield. Can you do a video of how to replace a radiator and head gaskets? My van has a small crack at the top most right on the radiator, the hoses should get replaced, same as the cap and drain plug, the gaskets both head and intake, and the coolant sensors since the temp gauge is a hair behind the 1/4 marker, but it distributes heat without issues.

  • @moonblink
    @moonblink 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice Chris. Those little dots don't really matter, so long as the crack doesn't grow. yes?

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      moonblink Correct. As long as the crack is sealed it wont grow and those little dots are just air specs that I couldnt get out.

    I have an appointment with Safelite, whom I trust to do a good job. I would imagine they have a better kit , bubble remover, and UV light to get an almost invisible repair.
