I had a swiss army knife as a kid, I bought a buck clone when I was like 17, I bought a Mora Companion when I got super into camping a few years ago and used it for about 8-10 trips in my first year, never let me down. I always used to EDC a Vic Compact. I know what you mean though, my first "real" knife was a QSP Parrot! My second was a Badlands Vagabond after seeing it endorsed on this channel.

Carried a Gerber paraframe for almost 15 years then upgraded to a Kershaw link. Got an R2D2 for a work knife. Next step was the Elementum when they were all the hype. Then got a Bugout on a good sale and I officially became a "knife guy" and started buying more and more. I'd consider the bugout my first "real" knife but I suppose the action of the elementum changed the game for me.

I asked for and got my first pocket knife when I was 5 years old. I wanted to whittle and my dad said 'sure!' and let me choose a small Sacre stockman (made in Japan) from Uncle Bills (a defunct discount store like a Kmart) in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. It has a fake pearl plastic handle and cuts very poorly. I even noticed that as a 5 year old and couldn't cut through balsa wood. I still have it over 5 decades later.
And for a small blade companion, I'd recommend the Columbia River CRKT 2861 Larry Fischer Hunt'N Fisch Fixed 2.99" Drop Point Plain Blade.

Doug Nicholson, Seth had the right idea, but he got the wrong model from White River: Try the Caper or the Backpacker. You've got an excellent, very tough S35VN blade inm a small, easy to use package that makes an almost perfect companion to the Esee 6. If you want even more indestructability, consider the Cold Steel Pendleton Mini Hunter in CPM-3V. For less than $70, you're getting an incredible piece of magically tough steel with a grippy rubber handle.

Thanks Knife Center, DCA, Seth, Thomas, for all the wonderful content!
First 'real' or 'big boy' knife . . . Spyderco Endura, Gen 1 with G-2 Stainless and black injection molded handle (pocket clip part of the injection molding.) I still love the knife, it now resides on my desk, at home, for whatever need arises.
Twist on the question . . . what knife did you buy that made you realize that knives are now a hobby?

I've been a bike mechanic for years, and I'm sorry to say, but those multi-tool selections for MTB misses the mark. The reality is that there are no knife or general multi-tools that feature useful bicycle drivers. Likewise, there are no bicycle multi-tools that feature a blade, or even pliers.
9:13 If you're going to recommend a separate unit just for the bike, then the right multi-tool is something like the IB-3 from Park Tool.
13:25 Please don't use a metal prybar to remove a bicycle tire from a wheel. It might work a few times, but without plastic lever (or even a plastic coating) it runs the risk of destroying the rim.
Leatherman Signal isn't a bad idea for everything off the bike. I rock one of those one rides sometimes.

About the "first real knife" I agree. As a boy I loved knives and had lots of those folding pocket knives, and a few fixed blades, but those weren't what I would consider to be "real knives". My first was a Spyderco Sage 5 in VG10 with G10 handles or something like that.

"Real knife" for me means a dedicated knife from a recognised brand that is intended for regular use. My first knife was a SAK but my first real knife was a Buck 110. Used the 110 to death - still have it after 30 odd years but is beyond sharpening now. As for a small companion blade to a larger knife - 1) If you want to stay with Esee there is the Izula or the Becker co-lab BK14. 2) I often use a Ruike F815 Hornet. Sharp blades all.

"What was your first knife or "real" knife" is a question that only younger people can answer, because those of us who are older all got our first "real" knives as children, and we don't remember them that clearly any longer. I got my first pocket knife at probably age 6 or 8 at most, and it was probably one of those Ideal "Camper" knives that were ubiquitous on the mid-late 20th Century. I don't even remember exactly when I got my first Victorinox knife (definitely a "real" knife), but it was probably a Huntsman. At one point I remember an older neighbor of my grandparents gave me a lockback knife that was either a Buck 110 or a knockoff of it, and that too was definitely a "real" knife. I know that at about age 19, I bought myself a Gerber Mark II, because I bought it while I was at university in the late 1980s. Now that is most definitely a "real" knife! I became a fan of Gerber after my older brother bought himself a Gerber Blackie Collins Frisco Shiv boot knife during high school.
For most of my 20s, I would have been carrying a Victorinox, either a Huntsman or a SwissChamp and/or a Midnite Minichamp II, and at about 30-31, I got my Leatherman Wave, when they were first released (1998? 1999?). It was probably around that time, the late 1990s, that I started to amass a collection of vintage Gerber knives, mostly fixed blades, plus some from Cold Steel, Benchmade, and SOG. In the early 2000s, I acquired all the knives that comprise the mainstays of my current collection, my vintage Gerbers and Benchmades. All of this was already over 20 years ago, so my memory is already getting fuzzy about exactly what I purchased where and when. I have since sold off most of my collection, and only kept the ones I really wanted most. My most recent addition is probably my #1 EDC knife, my Victorinox Rambler, which I probably got around 2009-2010. My Rambler needs a new scissors spring.
My 1st gen Leatherman Wave with Wave Tool Adapter kit is my bicycle multi-tool, now.

I lost my Leatherman e33Tx knife - just a few tools, but great size, utility, and deployment. All of this style of Leatherman have been discontinued. I bought a Leatherman Free T4 hoping it would have a similar feel. It doesn't. I have found used e33Tx very expensive and recently settled on a used Leatherman Crater C33T but I'm sad that all of the Leatherman knives of this type are no longer made. The used ones sell for far mor than the original new ones. The Swiss Army Tinker isn't too far off, though I like the one-hand deployment the old Leatherman knives had.
For the Q&A maybe it was answered previously? I bought a used beater Kershaw Blur to try, cleaned it up, sharpened it, and I like it for it's toughness and snappy auto assist action. But as with many other Kershaws, the tough hard use knives are not all reversible and deep carry pocket clips are not as common as I wish they were. A possible reversible successor to the Blur would have been the Knockout, which deploys with both flipper and thumb studs, but seems discontinued. Both the Knockout and the Blur could be considered icons, IMO. Please recommend a tough, REVERSABLE, reasonably priced EDC knife (say, well under $100) that is easily deployed, preferably with both flipper and thumb studs. I wouldn't need to necessarily be auto-assist, but with a similar size to the Blur and work vibe of the Blur or the Knockout. I do kind of like some Cold Steel knives, but not their non-flippy actions.

Companion to the esee... I went with the Mora eldris. It's small, light weight, comfortable and the compound grinds give it more versatility in roles the esee isn't as good at ( admittedly I have the 5 not the 6 because I wanted a tank of a knife that I can abuse as primary)

My first “real” knife was a blue buck sprint. I ran into it on a vacation when I was wandering in a store that sold a bunch of random things. I was on vacation for a week, and it immediately caught my eye, but I was a bit stingy and I decided that if it was still there on my last day in that town, I’d buy it. It was still there on the last day so I bought it.

Esee makes a number of smaller knives in s35 or 1095 that suit the smaller knife companion role- and the have the Esee warranty. On the tough folder, that Demko is a good pick. Otherwise look at the options in 14c28n; very tough stuff, can be had at a very reasonable price in a number of options.

For me the first "real" pocket knife was buying a Kershaw Blur in 2009. I carried that thing for a decade before I ever really considered looking for something new. Now I cant stop buying knives but nothings really topped that Blur. Granted I dont have the budget to spend alot on a singular knife so not being able to find anything better may be a consequence of that.
