James Brand honestly has the best branding out there for a knife company. Their knives are just waaay too expensive for me to justify a purchase from them. They look slick though!
They look is incredible. I’ve since picked up a Mini Crooked River from Benchmade and haven’t picked up the Carter since. But everyone starts somewhere.
I did the reverse, started with a black-on-black Folsom in 2019 and upgraded to a stainless-on-black Carter this year :) Honestly, I like how James Brand executed their knives (the design aesthetic, functionality, materials, and packaging) but to be equally honest, their prices are too high for what you get. I love my Folsom and Carter but I could never recommend them to others :P
Great video Chris. I too own a James Brand Carter. It's a great knife. I really like the weight on this knife. When it's in my pocket I almost don't even notice it's there. The styling is great, the packaging is great. Overall it's a great knife. Now as a lifelong knife person I have a couple gripes about it. it's a little to expensive for what you get. For that price point there are MANY far superior knives out there. As you start to own more you will see what I'm talking about. It's not a heavy use knife either. Even after 2 days in my pocket the knife clip was all scratched up. Another gripe I have about it is that it continuously needs to have it's pivot point tightened. I could sit here and flip it open 15-20 times and I need to tighten it again. Not really a fan of that. Keep these videos coming Chris!
Oh man! Thanks for the heads up on those pain points. I totally get no product is perfect. My experience thus far has been good with it. I’ll keep an eye on those tightening issues.
Hey Kinu, I’m no knife expert at all. I did have my eye on Benchmade Griptillian as I was shopping around. Similar price, but not sure if it’s better per se.
@@KinuGrove Civivi elementum all day long for $50. I have a $60 dollar one with copper scales that I absolutely love. Almost anything from Kizer at or under what the carter costs. Benchmade griptillian. For the same price you can get a benchmade bugout. All great knives @ the same pricepoint or less. I still like my Carter but there are far better knives for the $$
Seem a nice guy Chris, I like what you had to say, as new to the knife Community / edc world & being in the Uk , I myself have been drawn to the James knifes & there brand, I have brought some other makes knives first but do plan on getting one of there knives. I have heard a lot of negativity about the James brand tho, I am wondering why this is ? ?
Hey Jason! Thanks for that man! I try to be a nice guy lol I think a lot of negativity I’ve seen comes from the emphasis on style from James Brand. They lean heavy on their designs which has led some people to believe their materials are less than quality. I’ve enjoyed my knife from them. It checked a lot of boxes for me: compact, lightweight, durable, and clean looking. I just picked up a Civivi Elementum knife for $50 and I’ve loved it! I might make a video on that one soon.
I purchased their new Ellis and the ulu lanyard. My lanyard was in the big envelope with the knife forgotten! I emailed and haven’t got a response yet but I’ll try to update this as the customer service plays out here
A great Review! As a knife guy id say james brand is a but spendy for what u get. That being said id be happy to help u find knives u like and would carry! First up i recommend wesn!
I’ll check out that Wesn! I’m very new to knives and EDC. I had my eyes on a Benchmade but ultimately liked the design of the James! Thanks for the rec!
Chris Gomez always happy to help! If u want a rock solid knife thats made by a dmall company check out trm! They make incredible knives if your willing to pay around 200$ but its incredible value for the quality
Thanks Yuriy! The silver one is a Gerber knife I got from my brother in law. The wood one was a gift from a friend who went to Nicaragua like 8 years ago.
I would recommend flicking the knife and playing with it to get it smoother and to break it in. Axis locks always need to broken in and so does any other knife, should be able to just thumb flick it sfter its broken in👍🤘
Nice video mate! Well produced and appreciated your insights. As a designer, I'm a sucker for attention to detail so this brand really speaks to me. I think this video just sealed it for me haha. Keep it up! Cheers!
Man, Jamie, thanks for the love! I sell packaging for my full time job. I’ve come to enjoy how people present their product. James Brand did a solid job carrying their quality through every aspect of my experience.
First off, you have really great on camera presence and you speak to the camera very well. I like your enthusiasm! As for the Carter though, packaging is cool and all, but at the end of the day you're not going to be carrying the box around in your pocket all day. That stuff is just going to sit in a drawer or go in the trash. For the price that you're paying for that knife and for what you're getting, it's really not worth it. But I totally get what James Brand does and their marketing really does seem to pay off because they have no shortage of customers. For me personally, I'd rather be more impressed by the actual knife rather than the packaging it came in. I don't mean any offense by this, but this brand's target demographic seems to be for people who don't really know all that much about knives. Not a bad thing though, as it can get more people into the hobby. You also barely spoke about and showed the actual knife in the video, which I feel like is a great analogy for the James Brand, style over substance. There are definitely brands that produce better knives for the money like Spyderco. But anyhow, to each their own. If you're happy, don't let an old fart like me tell you any different!
Thanks for the well thought out comment. And the positivity on the camera presence. I appreciate that! I would actually second the point about this being a focus on the brand itself. They killed it (as I already said in the video) with the customer experience. This was my first major knife purchase and it’s done it’s job for my needs of opening packages and cutting lose threads. I have minimal knife knowledge, even now after spending some time learning about them. But I spoke to what I knew and loved about James Brand. There’s a knife for everyone and everyone starts somewhere. In fact, I just picked up a Mini Crooked River from Benchmade about a month ago. Now onward to this beautifully expense hobby lol
@@CMathewGomez I appreciate the response Chris! I sometimes forget that there are always people just starting their knife journeys. So I hope I didn't come off snooty or rude. Also, the fact that their company name is James BRAND is almost a little too meta for me. They have branding baked into the name haha! Great choice with the mini Crooked River btw, Benchmade is definitely in my top 5 knife companies. And yes, you're just at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to getting into knives. Enjoy them in good health man.

did this man just say "benchmark"
Sure did. Good ole slip of the tongue. 🤷🏻♂️
Dude, I carry a carter also. I snagged the green micarta one. Check out the Folsom as well. I rotate them both and they are both killer blades.
I think I had my eye on the Folsom when I was buying the Carter. I really preferred the shape of the Carter more. But the Folsom may be up next 🤔

Great video mate . Thanks for posting .
Ps. You said benchmark ? I think you meant benchmade but close enough . 😂
Great work !! ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
You’re absolutely right about the Benchmade thing. Lol
They just sold off a bunch of JamesBrand knives on IG that had blemishes but fully functional for %50 off

Would love to know a few of the knives that you think are better for this price point.
Hey Kinu, I’m no knife expert at all. I did have my eye on Benchmade Griptillian as I was shopping around. Similar price, but not sure if it’s better per se.
Try a Ganzo Firebird fh51 or f753m1 or fh11s or fb727s. All are excellent knives for a fraction of the price. The box isn't as fancy, though.

Chris, was there a lanyard under the felt in the box? I thought the carter had one more trick up it's sleeve.
Dude! Jay, I didn’t even look! I’m checking as soon as I’m home!!!
Chris Gomez well ??
Hey mate . I just got mine a few days ago . No lanyard . I’m about to drop my review and it’s all bad .. 😞
Sick thumbnail dude🤙🏻
I appreciate that! Much love!

Hi Chris, great video as always. What are the other 2 knives on the table? Looking to purchase them, they are really unique. Thanks!

Dude thanks for the tip Stuart! Appreciate that!
Yup almost every knife needs a break in point!
Oh and Chris reeve those are my top 2 favorite!
Great video. I got me a Spyderco knife, but that knife is clean. Also I am about to cold call James Brand for that packaging business 😂
I got my stuff in a Uline bubble mailer. Might be worth a snag... if you can beat me to it. 😂

It’s a different kinda like. Lol
Check out spartan blades and thank me later!!
Good looking out! I’m just starting into knives, so I’ll look them up for sure!
@@CMathewGomez yea no problem man would love to see some new videos on knifes! I’m a big knife addict lol so if you have any questions just hmu 🤙
