    I hope you enjoy this video. This is my ninety fifth "WHATS IN THE BOX" kit review and I hope to be completing this model when i have the necessary skills to do it the justice it deserves in a bout 10 years time. I have a model collection/stash of 33-40 1/72 Spitfires which i am currently building badly for the amusement or to the annoyance of my fellow TH-camrs, As my competence levels are not sufficient to complete this model it will be held in reserve for when i deem the time is right. If you would like to see the of 33 Spitfires there is a link to my collection below. As a novice modeller my intention is to learn the various assembly techniques and skills required, especially that of painting, so as i can produce half decent looking models, I concluded the best way to do this is to start with something simple, personally i think the best way to learn a new skill is repetition; try, try and try again. Hopefully by completing these 33 Spitfire models i will learn a few tricks of the trade. Whilst doing this I am also hoping to improve my VERY basic TH-cam skills, so far just uploading these videos has resulted in tantrums of titanic proportions, yes unfortunately i am also techno-phobic.
    Follow me on my novice modelling journey whilst I try desperately to overcome my midlife crisis. Questions and suggestions always welcome. Please like and subscribe and follow me on my ride!

    I was a medic in the 3ID in Iraq. I drove a M113. I lived in it for six months when we were preparing for the invasion. I loved that vehicle. It was fun to drive though at time I did not think about that. Strangely enough, the best sleep I ever had was sleeping on the stretcher even in with the sounds of war. If you ever get a kit for a M113 I would be watching.

    Hey Andy, WOW, " epic" finish, it really really came out looking very sharp. Plus I love the turn table, looks like my model budget just went up. In all the models I've ever built I've only used all those tiny decals on one kit and it was a 1/48 scale. I think they really detract from the finish product. Plus they almost take as much time to put on as the entire build. Anxious to see the next video. Oh, I did think of one American beer that's not bad, the only one I drink, comes from a German family in Texas, Shiner Bach. Amber type of beer and once a year they brew a Christmas variety pack. Not sure they ship it across the pond. But you are right about some variety of our Bourbon. Cheers Bob

      Thanks Bob. it came out Ok i was worried for a bit. I have checked Amazon for the Shiner beer and weirdly i can buy some enameled signage tin wall hangings but no beer LOL. yes the the tiny decals are kind of annoying, got some interesting responses to the question tho, i think i may have a go at adding a few at some point.

    Hi Andy. I appreciated the name check and that there is a delay on your end. The only advice I would give you is that from now on always add weight if your building an aircraft with tricycle undercarriage. Some manufacturers actually tell you the amount to use in the instructions , I am not sure that Revell would be so helpful. Yes , I would use all of the stencils that are supplied but thats because I am a super detailer and yes it takes me a lot longer to make models because of it. The actual look of the model is fine and to be fair to you your still learning your trade so don,t get down about it. As I have told you before I have made some real shockers but with age and improving skills my models are much better now. So stick at it bud you will get there. Overall your models are getting much better. I would advise to look at more colour pictures of your subject to help you identify the correct colours of certain parts. The Americans tended to paint the ordnance olive green , the same colour as the anti glare panels if that helps. But well done on this one it looks good. I look forward to watching your next video and I will let you know what my choice will be. Good luck bud.

      will do Brian,in a weird way i actually enjoyed building this, not the problems just the larger size forced me to break it up into sections and walk away after doing a bit and return after a few hours. i will try putting some of the stencils on, i was presented with this on the D-day builds what i ticed that was the Airfix Jepp versus the Academy jeep each had quite a different number of stencils. so my opinion is kinda that some manufacturers so extra detail on the stencils when perhaps some don't for whatever reason.

    Your model, your workbench, your rules mate. Whatever works for you is the way to go. I am a detail "geek" and would put on most of the smaller decals, because for me, that adds scale realism and life to the finished model. Overall it looks great!, be seeing you

    I was in 4/66 HHC in Aschaffenburg Germany. It was a Brigade of Abrams and Bradley's. The funny thing once you up close to these vehicles they aren't as pretty as when you see them on TV. The outsides are rough, and the crew compartments are rougher.

    Lovely result Andy. The black anti glare panels look nice and sharp against the Silver scheme. The canopy looks good too. Personally, I'm a sucker for data stencils ( the tiny decals ) They are fiddly and time consuming, but they also add an element of accuracy to the finished model. I think the little red fuel cap decals, in particular, would have given a nice contrast to the Silver and black finish. Having said that, it's a purely personal choice and not applying them takes nothing away from the quality of the result. Now you'll have to get yourself a bottle of Tamiya Panel Accent to bring out the panel detail and add a little depth to the finish of your models.
    Great work.👏

      Hi Dean, I think i will add them at some point, I am not certain but these Stencils seem to a bit of an American thing as in they are used more on American aircraft. Ah yes panel detail, washes and weathering...... i have a few of these but have held off trying them as i need to get my head around varnishing first, i think that will be my next project as i have some ready built Spitfires for practice, then in a few weeks i may have a go at doing a bit of weathering etc on something. theres a lot of things to learn

    • @deanmaguire6701
      @deanmaguire6701 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheNoviceModeller Hi Andy, I think you'll find stencils on most aircraft of all nations... they denote, practical info for Ground Crews ; lifting points, fuelling types & points, lubrication info, warning signs "No Step" areas etc, but they often go unnoticed . Particularly on smaller scale models and in fact in real life. In war time operations they may or may not be present, for instance after battle damage repair and depending on how " under the pump " the ground crews were. Like I said, I'm just a sucker for them, but there's no right or wrong answer. Weathering is another rabbit hole you may or may not wish to dive into ? I'm in the less is best camp, but others with more artistic flair than I have will have a different opinion. At the end of the day they are Your Models and You build em, and finish em, as You see fit 👍

    Pretty decent build, Andy. Your skills are definitely improving, and the metallic finish is quite good. I would suggest getting some packs of small sinkers if you are going to do more aircraft with tricycle landing gear. Squash the sinkers to fit, if necessary, with a small hammer. Epoxy putty or superglue can be used to fix them--even white glue can be used, but the setting time will be longer and it's not as secure. Always check the inner surfaces of the lower wings for partially drilled out attachment points for drop tanks, bombs, missiles and the like--it will save you a lot of grief later if you decide to add them.

  • @Adam_Boots
    @Adam_Boots 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You'll probably find a step in the instructions which tells you where to drill for the mounting holes of the weapons. Kits tend to be moulded without the holes on the exterior as they can be built as multiple versions. They tend to have a recess on the inside of the part though which indicate where to drill.
    I have to admit to missing this sort of thing before and had to use a very bright light to shine through the plastic to see where to drill as the thinner plastic lets more light through

    Great work Andy. Here's my two cents on stencils. If you stencil the model as with other decals, they stand out prominently. Looking at photos, I never look at a service plane and think 'look at all those stencils'. But, look at a heavily stencilled model and they are prominent. In wartime photos, I see the stencils mostly in close ups. SO, in my opinion they need to be toned down.... and also they can be left off, fewer than normal used, or some can be replaced with little touches of paint to suggest a stencil.
    I usually add them, especially if the decals are nice, but I try to tone them down with weathering or by 'fading' them by overpainting with a more subtle colour.

    • @TheNoviceModeller
      @TheNoviceModeller  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There was a lot of them with this kit and as always i am against the clock with these kits and vids, i think i may try add some of them at some point, just seems to me that some kits are stencil light and some like this one are very stencil heavy.

    Hey Andy.
    Tell ya what, this has turned out really nice mate. You've made a lovely looking model out of a not particularly very decent kit. That to me is proper modelling. You could have just chucked it together and said oh well its an old kit, not worth bothering with. That's a decent finish on the silver and overall, it looks the nuts! 👌
    You're way too hard on yourself mate, you can definitely see the difference in your builds now from when you started and I love that part of this hobby. Especially when you have a record of your journey like you do!
    Top job serry, nice build and finish and another one finished too! Prolific!!

      Thanks very much Bobby, i do feel they are improving but still many mountains to climb and many new routes to discover. TBH i thought i was heading for a bit of a disaster with this one so pretty happy with how it turned out. I am finding this modelling malarkey and the youtube lunacy to be a very engaging and enjoyable pass time.
      I think i set the channel up as a sort of alternate version to the established TH-cam channels where the end product is near master piece level, i watched many of these channels before starting and to be honest ended up kind of feeling intimidated by them, i kinda figured that the, as you have correctly identified "record of a journey" might be interesting, so i suppose thats the intended reason for being here. I am quietly surprised with the positive reception it has got and find myself on the threshold of youtube monetisation, which in itself is a bit of a surprise, though exactly what and how that benefits a small fish like myself i am not exactly sure, but it is an interesting aspect of taking a roll of the dice on youtube and seeing what happens. I am kind of sitting on a whole bunch of ideas, kits and channel tweeks, so am looking forward to continuing this saga over the coming months and years.
      Though one of the most enjoyable aspects so far has been engaging with fellow kit builders like yourself. I intend to set something up in the next month or so to allow viewers to show their builds, as i'd be far happier waxing lyrical about other peoples builds than my own, looking forward to showing off one of your kits.
      thanks for your support
      best regards andy

      @@TheNoviceModellerI get the intimidating aspect of watching some modellers on YT, I've definitely succumbed to that feeling more than once! But then you realise, we are all different, we want to do different things, and the main thing is you enjoy what you're doing. I try to improve all the time but I'm never going to be a NightShift Modeller! I build for me.
      What you're doing takes far more gumption as you're exposing yourself to opinions, comments, judgement's and the like. Personally, I've enjoyed seeing how you've improved in such a short time, and also because as you say, your style is a little different shall we say! 🤣
      I've enjoyed your Video's because they are almost an alternate version to the rivet counters, and the colour scientists! I'm really glad you're enjoying it too and I hope that continues.
      I've been struggling with mojo for quite a while and the few channels I watch on a regular basis, yours included have helped keep me sane, and hopefully get me back to the bench again.
      1000 subs almost there and more ideas to try out, sounds wicked to me!
      Keep up the great work mate. 👊
