How to overseed & level lawn (Step by step guide)

- Hey Everyone. In this video I will be showing you how to OVERSEED & LEVEL your lawn in a step by step guide. Fall season for cool season grass is here so its a perfect time to do some overseeding and leveling. Steps I will be going through in this video are.
1.Mowing
2.Aerating
3.Power raking
4.Seeding
5.Topdress
6.Leveling
7.Brushing
8.Garden roller
It will not be a full lawn leveling, that will be a video for next year, but if you have some areas you want to level and you want to overseed at the same time, this is the guide for you!

As a fellow obsessive/hyperfixator you have good insight into the need to take a step back, relax and enjoy it. I'm renting right now but about 130-150m2 lawn and I want to enjoy it'd. Got lots of clover, moss and weeds and very spongy to walk on in places. Some patches nothing is growing not even weeds I think its super compacted that or fungus? So far done liquid aeration and feed and weed granules. When autumn comes will scarify (thinking Ryobi one) then over seed. Sandy soil as right on the beach. BTW how to determine pH of soil? Hey Peter, thanks for the sub! Appreciate it 🙏 I would say it sounds like it's compacted, so hollow tine aeration would be the way to go IF the the problem is indeed compaction, hard to say without knowing the lawn. Don't think scarifying alone will solve it and liquid aeration is a process you need to stick to for months and months, if not years. I explain that a little bit in my thatch video. If you have sandy soil as right on the beach then your soil lacks nutrients, sand has none of that. So add some regular soil and compost to the mix. If you have too much weeds, over 50%-60% i would just recommend starting over, killing everything off, getting the soil mix right and seeding. I will be starting over with my lawn next season so just do what I do :) I will also be doing a soil test and showing how you can check your PH levels. But basically order a soil test and follow the instructions. Let me know if you have any other questions my man, and do keep me updated with any progress with your lawn.

What helped me over seeding a bare area of my lawn was the use of garden fleece to cover the area, I did all the things you did but I covered the seed with a thin layer of compost, watered it and then covered it with this fleece material, pegged the edges down to prevent the wind removing it and left it for 6 days approx and there was grass showing through. Could I suggest you check out Daniel Hibbert Lawn experts videos where he demonstrates the use of the fleece material.
I know pushing top dressing material about is hard work but various You Tubers suggest making more smaller piles rather than one large wheelbarrow load in one place.
Actually tried that when I overseeded last year, where I dug out clover, worked really well, good tip 👍🏼
Yeah, think I'll make smaller piles next time, took a long time for these to dry out, but it worked out and I got som well needed exercise 😂

Hey dude, well that depends on what grass you have, I would say for rye 3-4 weeks, fescue 4-6 weeks and kgb 6-8 weeks. If you have a miz of all then you could start mowing with a manual reel mower or something like that, those things don't have alot of weight to them so that's fine. A normal mower just weighs too much.
👍 What brand is that power rake/scarifying? How does it compare to Sunjoe?
Hey Lawrence, it's an AL-KO, pretty common cheap brand here in Sweden, it's pretty much the same price as the Greenworks and the Sun Joe, alot of plastic and electric. It also comes with the same two attachments as the Sunjoe. I would guess there all made in the same factoryin China somwhere and just rebranded. I know the sunjoe is made in China at least. But they do the job for us average joe lawn nuts :)

Hey man, thanks for watching. My topdressing already has fertilizer in it so didn't feel i needed anymore than that.
I try to aerate anytime the lawn needs it. That can be before after or in the middle of my winter. Of course we have no snow on the ground. I feel that if it is compacted at any time then at any time it will do it beneficial to be aerated. That's at least my theory.
I agree fully, aerating is one of the things you can do multiple times during a season, give the roots room to spred and grow, let all the good stuff get down into the soil and deeper into the roots. I prefer to do it at least twice, that's a minimum but more often is better.
Another excellent video Sam. If I may suggest, the music is too loud. It makes it difficult to hear your voice. Please consider adjusting that.

Hey Pat, for sure, it's a great time to overseed after you have power raked or used the scarifyer, the soil is perfectly prepped for the new seeds then, so go for it! :)

I’ve already watched most of your videos and i got to this one and believe it or not i am going to ask you something that’s related to the very last seconds of the video 😅 : having done everything how much do you really need to irigate ? I mean i have a normal 9-18 work schedule ( not 9-17 because i’m in Romania 😅) so i could leave the hose doing it’s job in the morning before leaving for work but then i’ll be back home around 19 so in this whole time what i am supposed to be doing ? Am i doing all in vain because i won’t be able
to water the lawn during this time of the day ? I watched other videos and i understand for this process to work the soil must be moist at all time ? Should i hire someone to care for this while i’m gone for work 😁? Thanks in advance my man. (I do like to watch your videos because i’m doing 2 things at a time : getting knowledge on the lawn care as well as improving my english listening and repeating out loud everything you say 😅. Cheers

The seeds need to be moist, as soon as they dry out they might just roast. That's why most people recommend doing any seeding during the fall since we have alot of rainfall to help with that. Take this spring for instance, we didn't have rain for over 3 weeks, and summer is also dry so fall is the best. With that said, ofc you can seed when you want to. Watering during mornings is the best option and then if it's not too sunny out, it wont dry out hopefully until you come home. It can dry out for a bit it wont kill it off just if it's dry for some time, but you would want to keep it moist as much as you can :)

If u roll the lawn to get soil to seed contact AfTer using the broom, doesn’t it make the existing grass go back under the soil and defeat the purpose of brooming it?
Hey Mate, The grass will fold over on top of the soil and not underneath it so no worries, also as soon as the grass has some water and sun, it will just stand straight again.

I always seed THEN top dress over it and then go over it with a garden roller to get that good seed to soil contact. I have tried it the other way around, but I feel that you get a lot less germination if the seeds aren't covered with top dress or soil.
When using the hollow tine tool why don't you work backwards so you don't need to stand on the extractions?

You could, but I find you get worse germination rate without having top soil on the grass, and it will also be harder to keep it moist since you don't have the top dress or soil to keep the moisture.
I have St Aug in Texas. Can I oversees with fescue? Also should I airate?
Hey Jim, hmm not sure I would use fescue in Texas, I mean it could work but you would need to really be vigilant about watering and having proper irrigation during summer. I would probably opt for just warm season grass types. Aeration 1/year is one of the best thing you can do for your lawn. Keep thatch in check, allowing space for roots to grow and your key ingredients, water, air nutrients to reach the soil. So if you can do it 1/y go for it.

😢 i am so sad! i watched over 500 videos. i had a national turf company for last 4 years … its 1 st week in March 23. i had grub infestation that national company ignored. i just want to over-seed this spring and level a couple of areas. i have tall fescue grass! Is there anyone our there than can point me to a video. Grubs are taken care of and will be in late summer. My basic question… ? can i over seed with sand and mulch this Spring and keep learning? i am begging for 1 -2 3 steps to get started! please help some one! i have been watching videos since Sept 2022
Hey Philip, don't worry mate, lawn care is a long term game and grass is very resilient, it will all be fine. So first things first. You want to do some over seeding and also level some areas this spring?
Not sure I understand what you mean when you say you are overseeding with sand and mulch? If you overseed, you are better off to throw some top dress, peat moss or compost over it, to keep moisture.

I'm up late watching this video. It's horrible in that the music is TOO LOUD and will wake everybody up! But then when you talk it's so quiet that I cannot hear you. I'm afraid that I cannot watch this video. Please be careful with volume levels in the future. Music should not be louder than voice!!!
Hey Bill, thanks for the feedback. I actually had some issues early on, accidentally hit some kind of button to use only one audio channel so I couldn't adjust the music. Haven't done this even a year yet so still learning. Thanks for the feedback though, will try to think more about audiolevels
