Her whole band is like this. Dead-on in pitch, dean-on with the beat. They lock together tighter as a band than any band (rock, bluegrass, folk, ANYTHING) I've ever heard. And very often, they play with no drummer, but still keep the beat solid. They all have a magnificent finesse and elegance that enables them to play like a soft, cozy blanket even though the beat is rock solid.

I've never heard it said better. She either gives me chills or watery eyes with her voice. I try not to listen in a group if I'm not at a concert. I am sensitive to some singers and the notes they hit so perfectly and the meaning conveyed in their voice without even hearing the words. Robert Plant has said on numerous occasions that he was initially afraid to sing with Allison, because he didn't think he was a good enough singer to do it. Thankfully, he is good enough, and their albums together are amazing.
I heard a rumor that James Taylor was not excited to work with Allison on "How's the world treating you", but after working with her, was in awe.

As I recall, the song "How's the world treating you" was recorded for "Livin',_Lovin',_Losin':_Songs_of_the_Louvin_Brothers", a special album by numerous artists honoring their work. Somehow Taylor was assigned to work with Allison, and I don't think he really knew who she was before he actually worked with her.
@@carlr2837 By the time they recorded together Krauss already had 13 Grammys, sang on many other artists albums and garnered a good number of other accolades. I am sure Taylor did know who she was.

Exactly the point I was going to make, though you said it first. It would be interesting to get this kind of analysis on the classical mezzo soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson because she was principally a viola player before transitioning to voice only (because her viola was stolen).
You nailed it. She’s trained her ear to hear pitches from a young age.
This is the reason for her pitch skills. Vibration transfer through her facial bones while playing the fiddle have developed her accuracy. Her singing style is very much like a violin and quite beautiful.

Allison has the clearest angelic voice I’ve ever heard. She sings so effortlessly.
That’s what makes her so unique. Not only her voice, but the seemingly lack of any effort. Nothing is ever forced it just seems to happen.

Allison is one of those voices like Roy Orbison that it doesn’t matter who she sings with her voice is always the one you hear. I have a really healthy respect for her work!

25 years ago, before streaming and satellite radio, I was driving cross country and in the middle of Nebraska I was feverishly running up and down the radio dial trying to find something, anything to listen to. I finally hit on a country station and all of a sudden I hear this VOICE singing that old Foundations tune "Baby, Now That I Found You ". One of my favorite 60s pop songs and this girl - whoever the hell she is - is KILLING it. I was gobsmacked. And I'm no country fan. I pulled off at the next exit, found a pay phone and called the radio station and asked who it was. Have been an Alison Krauss fan ever since. As pure a singer that has ever stepped in front of a mike.
Same! The Foundations did it in 1966 if I recall, and holy smokes... when I heard the stripped-down-and-slower (and emotional!) version that Alison Krauss & Union Station put out, I was happily awestruck. Amazing musicianship, lead vocal, everything! Glad you mentioned it, Victor :)

I could literally listen to Alison sing anything.
Years ago, sometime in the 90s, I used to have CMT on every day at home and Alison Krauss, at that time, was an up and coming new face on the scene. I managed to get tickets to see her with Union Station, on a rainy Tuesday night in January, at the Anvil Theatre in Basingstoke. I was absolutely blown away by the purity of her voice in a live situation; clear, gentle, and oh so sweet. Thirty years on and I would never be able to afford to see her again but that evening will live with me forever. Wonderful.

I have had the pleasure of seeing her perform live. My husband took me to see Willie Nelson as a gift a few years ago and Allison was opening for him. I am not exaggerating when I say her voice made me cry and stand in awe. I was 4th row center and talked for weeks about how she sounds better in person and it was my favorite concert to date. Which is saying a lot!
As amazing as her voice is on record, it is stunning in person.

But he's a God of rock music. His body of work with led zeppelin, is at the very very top.

I think she had a concept in her brilliant mind of how their voices and styles would work together and really put the pieces together. Shev is a very generous artist knows when to let the other here acoustic performances.
Actually, Plant harmonized quite nicely with Sandy Denny on “Battle of Evermore.” I recall him singing her praises when he made a guest appearance at Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival a few years ago. I got the sense that he was in awe of Sandy, she being the only singer to join Robert on an LZ vocal.

Fil... FIl... Fil... It is not just the pitch that is amazing. Listen to how well she handles all the closing consonant sounds at the ends of the phrase. She perfectly snaps the "s" and "t" and "d" sounds . Every word is clear, even the ones that have complex consonants. and.... she can change the volume of a note and maintain her pitch. It is like the note drifts into a fade and the pitch stays right on target. I agree with her "yodel" sounding the a guitar bend... very insightful.

Little violin-prodigy Alison was surprised when the record companies came calling wanting to talk about her voice. Singing had been incidental to playing at that point. It must be tough having these negotiations when you're like 13. :)

Marvin Gay was initially a live, touring drummer for Motown, before bringing his vocal abilities to the forefront.
One of the best singers of our time, imo. I play her songs for people and they're enchanted. But when I tell them her name, they say "who?" When I tell them how many awards she's won, they're awestruck. Deserves every one of those awards.
Met her backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in the late 90s. She is as beautiful a person as her voice is beautiful. Thank you for showcasing her Angelic voice here. 🙂 ❤

I very much appreciated your comment about her voice being the equivalent of a stringed instrument. I think that was an extremely insightful analysis.
I saw her live in 2002 and she’s so phenomenal: natural & easy singing, a gently wicked sense of humor, and extremely humble. A class act in every way. Union Station is remarkable, too. I sing and she’s a masterclass . I’ve learned so much from her. I always wanted to be a husky belter, but I have a soft head voice and she’s made me okay with it.

It's ease is like a feather floating to the ground. Its clarity is like a bell in a church tower. It's amazing how she uses her voice. Fil you went a bit deeper into the nuance of the voice. There are people who don't even try to look this closely. Alison could sing without any backing and have your full attention as shown here.

Thanks for asking what I think. Ms. Krauss is truly an artist. One of a kind. I don't believe a computer can analyze the musicality of such a performer. I am happy to be alive at the same time as Ms. Krauss, and I appreciate the gentle way she touches a song.
They are wonderful in concert. The usually do a couple of songs a cappella at the end. They are all superb singers/musicians. Their banter on stage is also fun. I enjoy watching you react to what you are hearing as well. Its easy to see when you like what you're hearing. It shows in your smile and your eyes. Keep it up!

But I like his inclusion of the backing vocals. I sing a lot of backing vocals in my band and while it would be wonderful to to back her , it’s usually a challenge , but also usually works. That’s part of the joy of being a musician!!
Alison slays me. I’ve heard many good characterizations of her voice (“angelic”, etc.) but for me, it’s like she’s leaning in, singing into my ear. Her singing is utterly authentic, and it embraces me, in the sweetest way.
Allison's voice is like liquid crystal. I'd say it's the most beautiful one I've ever heard.

When parents ask about music lessons for their young children - I recommend they get their children into either violin/fiddle or singing - because - you can't play violin or sing without listening and creating a "control loop" of listening for pitch. You can play piano and even guitar mechanically - just press the kyes in the right order and people clap - but you can't play violin or sing without listening. Alison has played violin and sung from a very young age - and that helped her develop this amazing pitch she has... Listening, not techincal skill is the key to becoming a musician.

I know nothing about vocals. I just call her pure and clear with her vocals. There aren’t many vocalist now that sing like her.

I don't have a musical background, so I wouldn't be able to recognize her accuracy. All I ever knew was that her voice was beautiful; this gives me a whole new appreciation for her. The fact that she started out as "just" a fiddle prodigy is kind of insane. This isn't just a matter of talent - this had to take years and years of dedicated training, *while* she was putting the same effort into the fiddle.
I have wondered if her early mastering of the viola is part of the reason for her vocal superpowers. You start a kid that early on an instrument that requires her to feel where the notes go without any marked positions for her, it's going to physically influence how her brain develops in a lot of wonderful ways.

@@helenjohnson7583 I used to teach in a well-to-do area north of Atlanta, about 20 years ago. There was an elementary school in the inner city where every student was given a violin and taught to use it. The school went from one of the most poorly performing schools in the state to one of the top.
Obviously it was an expensive program. They had a lot of help, a lot of celebrity support. If they aren't doing it now, money would have to be the reason.
I don't teach any more haven't for about that long, and do not live in Georgia any more, but I sure would like to know how that program is going and how those kids are doing.
As far as I know she got signed on the strength of both fiddle and vocal talent.

That’s a hard song to sing. I love Allison’s voice and it’s so distinctive that you always know it’s her. Whiskey lullaby is my favorite but it makes me cry.

I have seen Allison Keause sing live several times. The first time was in Nashville @ 1986-7 at a craft fair (Country Christmas) when I was helping Tom T. Hall's wife (Dixie) run her booth to raise money for her non profit. Allison was performing through the hall with Union Station and fter she passed by Dixoe Hall looked at me and said "That young lady is going to be a star). Even back then her voice was immaculate and distinct.
Have seen her in concert with Union Station twice.. she (and the band) are amazing. Have tickets to see her this summer with Robert Plant.. can’t wait. As always, thanks for such a detailed analysis, which makes me appreciate her even more!
I love Allison Krause. Her voice is magnificent. I’m not sure if you’ve ever given Nanci Griffith a listen, but she’s another woman with a beautiful voice. I think it would be interesting to hear and see you analyze her voice.

Alison is an amazing musician and vocalist and an amazing person. I live in Louisiana in the US and went to high school in a very rural one horse town type of school. I went to school with a family of siblings and their father that played bluegrass and Alison came to our little town after hearing them perform, she produced them and put their first album on her record label. They ended up winning a Grammy. The family is The Cox Family and the main vocalist for the family is Suzanne Cox. She and Alison sang and still sing a lot of songs together and their vocals harmonizing would blow your mind. It’s amazing. Over the years Alison will still occasionally show up in our little one horse town to visit this family who still all live there.
Thank you for featuring one of my favorite artists. I’ve seen Alison live several times and it gives you chills listening to her. The purist, most perfect voice ever. I’ll tell you the song that really shows off her perfection, Ghost In This House. Listen to that Fil. Your socks will be knocked off.

I've listened (and cried to) Ghost in This House every night since I lost my love almost a year and a half ago.
I was fortunate to have lived in Nashville just a little before Alison and Union Station made it big (say mid-80s). There was a little venue in Nashville called the Bluebird Cafe (not so much a cafe as a performance venue) where some of the up-and-comer artists played, as well as many legendary songwriters. Everything there was acoustic. No screaming guitars, etc. Any visit there would pretty much knock your socks off.
So, one night a group of friends converged at The Bluebird. Alison and her band were slated to appear. None of us knew anything about Alison, but we'd been to The Bluebird several times and knew that there would be a good show.
"Good show" didn't even come close. To this day, that show at The Bluebird is easily my favorite small venue performance. Practically a religious experience.

I just love this song! Karen Carpenter, to me, is still the best female vocalist! But, I have to admit that Alison is right up there with Karen with her smooth, angelic voice. These kind of singers are hard to find. They are rare gemstones indeed.
Along with the smooth singers I would add Sarah McLachlan. Whilst these singers have beautiful voices my personal preference leans to Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt and Ella Fitzgerald. No doubt, however, Karen Carpenter had a beautiful, beautiful voice. She was also a much more talented drummer than often acknowledged. Alison adds to a veritable heritage.

I love Alison's voice, it's so gentle, Alison and Linda Ronstadt beautiful singers.
I adore this fella, investigating American music at such depth. Especially, a metal head doing country. Speaks volumes about how intelligent and reasonable Fil is. He rocks, but he appreciates everything. Fil is a bit of a hero. I know myself, after years as a musician, he is a maestro. I know I would kick his ass on bass frets, but, hey.. That is always the story when I meet guitar players. They never play bass correctly.

What u may think or beleive bass should he played does not mean that is the rule for all others, it makes a huge difference when someone has natural self taught just gifted with playing a guitar or any instrument versus, one who learned by books or was made to learn n just don't have it, u can tell in the way they hold themselves w the instrument and if playing jus flows from within n become one w it while playing.

@@michellebarnett5154 I find guitarists mostly use pick hand for rhythm when playing bass and don't understand that it is fret hand mostly on bass. I used to play entire songs with only fret hand as exercises. It will really improve ones playing.
Those little semitones are part of the Celtic lilt style she incorporates into her singing- as do other Americana singers at times. It would be interesting to watch your pitch meter react to a great Irish singer , Niamh Parsons, singing in the Sean nos embellishment style!
How about Mary Black. I read she was used as the baseline for testing audio equipment back in the early 80s because her voice was so perfect.
Allison is from the South, the largest regions in the US with descendants of Scottish and Irish ancestry. I wouldn't be surprised if she has some Celt DNA. Bluegrass and Country singers commonly use "semi tones" (half-tones even quarter tones) and trills - it's a tradition. And this technique, in fact, the origins of Bluegrass and Country music evolved from Appalachia (descendants primarily from Ireland and Scotland - also Germany).

I caught Alison and Union Station live right after this song had come out back in the 90s and it was an experience. She did almost all the songs from "A Collection" and loved every one of them. Catch her if you get a chance...the voice of an angel.

Hearing your appreciation of a singer's strengths warms my heart.
Alison's instrument is the violin ("fiddle"). In order to be a good violinist/fiddle player, you have to have a very good ear for pitch because unlike the guitar, the violin has no frets to guide your finger placement. Since the violin is fretless, you have to be constantly so very aware that you are playing in pitch and constantly be correcting the note placements. I think this hyperawareness of pitch in her fiddle playing carries over into her vocals. The same would be true for playing dobro or slide guitar. The musicianship of this band is superb. They are masters of all the instruments they play, including their voices.
This is a perfect demo of how singers need to be judged on their own merit. You have AK here doing amazing things and then you see Fil's demo of Judy Garland doing Over The Rainbow and you think damn so many singers who are divine on their own that it's a sin to compare any singers at all. I know there is no comparison between singers in Fil's videos, it's just about an individual singer. Great job as always, Fil.Right now I want to do my own comparison (not in a video just in my head) between Alison and Emmylou Harris. I want to see want Fil thinks. Two angels flying close to the ground.
Alison Krauss and Union Station the best of the best at what they do. It always makes me wonder when you hear the best of in specific genres' how they would do in others like heavy rock/metal. Take this band fully electric shredding with a full on drum kit and how Alison would work out the vocals to do it. Great VOD Fil 👍

I would submit that her perfect pitch was developed while playing the viol;i because they don't have frets. She used that to make her vocals compelling as well.
Don't know if that helped her, but playing the violin or trombone means you certainly can't be tone deaf...
One of my favorite vocalists of all time. Especially love this cover of Keith Whitley's song (RIP) and really love her fist collaboration with Robert Plant on Raising Sand. Brilliant. And loved it live when they toured that album. Dynamite.
Those "tiny variations " are what make her voice so captivating. It doesn't sound fake because its not.
That is one of her most hauntingly beautiful songs. Hard to believe that she had to be coaxed into singing and not just playing fiddle. She reminds me of Linda Ronstadt in many ways. If you get the chance to see Alison Krauss and Union Station, you MUST go. Well done video and analysis!
