Thanks for doing this analysis of Barbra Streisand who is one of the true mega stars. She has spanned over 6 decades of music. This lady has a fabulous voice & can sing many genres of music. Barbra literally has Absolute Pitch (like Ella, like Sarah, like Stevie and many others) so everything she does is a choice. She’s also an actress, so she sings in character. Especially as she got older she mixed between singing and speaking in her characterization of the performance. Hence the descending vibrato pitch moments People think that having Perfect Pitch or Absolute Pitch means you sound like a computer, no, it’s a very very human perception and interpretation and feel for music. I trained my young voice to Barbra Streisand & Linda Ronstadt! (Sadly, Linda can no longer sing, due to illness)…I’d love to see your analysis of Linda; What a voice!

Thanks for this, Fil. First date with hubby was her/Kris version of A Star is Born. The lyrics of this song spoke to me then, and they still do. Walked down the aisle to this...
She's always been easy breezy with her vocals. It's effortless. I always loved her voice. I really listened to her on her Guilty album. She also sings wonderful duets. Barbara is top tier. It's interesting that we have subconscious tendencies when we sing. It's our mark of expression in my opinion.
Great vid ,Fil. Barbra is a great example of a gifted person that works very hard on top of it. I've heard that she suffers some type of insecurity that makes performing difficult for her. It surely wasn't evident there. She was enjoying herself and the audience there and delivered a magnificent performance. Thanks for this...
This was from 1986 and it was her first live concert for about 15-17 years, and that was because of insecurity. (This concert was held in her back yard as a charity event)
Barbara Streisand is wonderful in concert. When I was a teenager, I thought she was one of the best, and wished that I looked like her (still think the same!). I would love to see her live again! ….Fil, thank you for how you explain the “why” of everything. It’s refreshing to listen to someone who is so knowledgeable, so humble, and so engaging!

Thanks for playing this. Karen Carpenter, Barbara Streisand and Roberta Flack are my favourite female singers, although there are certainly many others whom I love. You've covered the first two. Maybe the third one some day? She does some terrific live versions of "Killing me Softly" or one of her other hits... hand
Thanks for this video analysis of my favorite female vocalist of all time, Barbra Streisand. The tone of her voice, her vocal phrasing and sweetened intonation is what makes her voice so haunting and moving. I also loved your analysis of Karen Carpenter. 👍
Brilliant. Thank you for showing us just how and why Barbra is as good as she is. Your videos always leave me so much better informed about technique and how the human actually works.
Thank you for covering my favorite male and female singers. Thoroughly enjoyed your coverage of Elvis, especially the last on whether his music could be autotuned. Fil another great analysis! Barbara has always made it look effortless, since the 60s, when I first saw her in movies and other performances. She always grabs the listeners attention when she "all of a sudden" hit the high notes. Thanks for the attention to the minute details!💖
She is a legend I saw her in concert and her voice just melts you in your seat. And when it was over I didn’t want it over lol. I was in awe and shock with such a soothing voice.
Barbara Streisand is an emotional singer I appreciate. Her high notes were piercing with quite full time and cord closure. I think the thing about her pitch dropping through the vibrato / end of a phrase, in the lower range, is about the decreasing "energy" of the note towards the end. In my observation, classical singers seem to focus hard on energy efficiency throughout the note at all parts of their range, as much as possible, even with using vibrato. Maybe having a more breathy tone causes the breath energy to be more quickly dispelled, leading to an inevitable fall-off at the end (as reflected on the pitch monitor) .
Left me Breathless Wow😉 Of course I mean you're analysis as well as Barbara's performance :) You're attention to detail with the vocal chart as well as piano descriptions on the bottom of the screen is exceptional ! You are educating the world about all kinds of music on here So appreciated 😎 Rock🤟
I feel singularly blessed to have lived through music from the mid 50's to today and have loved through all genres. Barbra was a later exposure for me as I didn't know her early work and first saw her in A Star Is Born. I then went to look for her work to discover a whole range of performances. I don't know music but I know what I like and have always felt she was exceptional. Your analysis tells me why. Ha Ha, "for those of you who sing". We all sing, Fil, just not very good!
This whole video is an excellent description of the combination of great natural talent and experience allowing excellent control of her instrument. Her expression in playing with the pitches is astounding. Thanks for the analysis.
Barbra is one of my all time favorite singers. Fil you sound like you have classical training with such knowledge you share with us! Thank you so much.
No matter how many of your videos I watch, I learn something new pretty much every time. Your ability to disect and then explain the technical aspect of music, whether it is sound, pitch, the notes and their characteristics, or just how a performer is able to produce the sound they do, is truly amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to educate those of us who would otherwise go through life clueless to the hidden beauty of music.
Oooh, love a bit of Babs! They don’t make em like this anymore… Fantastic explanation of the technique she uses and yes she looks so comfortable looking us straight in the eye when she hits those high notes. She knows 😉
Beautiful! I heard Babs could bend a note within singing the note. What it started out as changed and then sometimes led into the next note and sometimes returned back to the one she started with. Quality, Talent, Personality, Beauty................all in one voice. Wow!
I tried to follow you and wanted to be present while you were live on youtube, however, the monitor would not allow my thoughts to be seen/read. I felt that was not fair as many other comments were more inappropriate than mine = all is relative. So, "When someone shows you who they are. Believe them the FIRST time." And thus, I no longer visit you or your videos. I miss them.
Brilliant! Thanks Fil. My preference is for her early work (Down With Love and When the Sun Comes Out are two that come to mind) but this was great because if gave me my affirmation that she is that accurate of a vocalist. And your analysis of all these singers is brilliantly delivered and structured. Thanks again!
You know the audiences L-O-V-E-S you when they are giving you a standing ovations before you've sung your song. The one and only, multi-talented, Ms Barbra Streisand👍👏👏👏
Phenomenal video and analysis, I have never learnt so much on any video before.... Barbra Streisand is a technical genius and I am looking forward to you one day doing one of her more difficult songs "my man" "somewhere", etc to hear the accuracy of her vocals on those. Thanks for the stunning videos
It's great to see the objective proof of how fantastic Barbra is. I'd love you to do a Bee Gees song, particularly a live ballad like Run to Me from their peak in the 70s comparing Barry and Robin. There are some great performances from Chicago and Melbourne.

Thank you for this video! I can clearly see the difference of Barbra Streisand to all the performers now, in my generation, she is really the greatest star! I'm learning about her and it would be an interesting journey!
another excellent video, with yet another example of one of the greats showing off the mastery of her instrument. Have you ever done a video on how and why certain singers can make the hairs on you body stand up on end?
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 Wouldn't that very from person to person why some artists can make your hair stand on end or give you goosebumps but not the person sitting next to you or vice versa?
@@drewpall2598 Of course. I’d like to find out if there has been any research into what causes an emotional response when certain notes are sung. I can see how if a song has meaning to you and that is what triggers a response but it can happen with music I’ve never heard before. An example was an artist Fil covered recently that I’d never heard of before, called Floor Jansen. She was singing a song I’d never heard either (so there’s no “history” with either artist or song) yet her voice hit me in the feels almost instantaneously and I can’t think why.
I can appreciate someone who can look past the style of music and focus on the talent. I have to say I'm not a huge Streisand fan but she can sing with the best of them. I really like watching your videos and seeing the excitement that music brings to you. Great job.
These analyses and your explanations are extremely interesting and informative! You're as brilliant as some of the artists you study! Thanks for a very educational video!
Great. Unmistakable voice. Makes it look easy.. Like to see how king of the falsetto Barry Gibb shapes up. Julie Andrews another seemingly perfect vocalist. Frankie Valli another guy with the high notes.
Was waiting for Barry to step on stage here with Barbra. I must say that we are so fascinated by his rugged handsomeness (as Barbra appeared to be also) that however he sings is a-okay with us.

You are truly amazing. The depth and skill of your knowledge is astonishing. Great explanations how complex (and beautiful) music is. Barbra... ...one of my and my mother's favorites.
Thank you for that! This was so interesting! You can also see by her eyes how relaxed she really is. (It’s so difficult to yell at people while looking friendly - ask anyone who works with the hard of hearing 🙂) Great that you pointed out her body language! She played with the arrangement and seemed to have real fun with it - especially where she veers off from the studio recording. I really enjoy your analyses!
I learn so much with your analyses of the great singers' performances. Although it's hard for me to grasp all the intricacies of the technicalities, it's truly gratifying when one like me, who knows nothing of the subject, finally starts to understand a little bit more:-). Thank you so much for another delightful and educational video. Being a staunch Barbra's fan, this one's hit home!
Some of the notes you described as descending with vibrato look to me like the attack was a little high after which the pitch was constant. It's like a grace note within the vibrato. It may also reflect the slight changes in pitch for pronouncing the particular word in ordinary speech.
Fil, I've been watching a lot of your videos on auto -tuning and I must say I've learned so much! You NEVER fail to amaze me, Fil, with your knowledge and your ability to pass it on! Thank you so much for teaching your viewers so much - you're one of a kind!
Her voice is a true wonder. I too, have been astounded by the relaxed nature of her vocal prowess. I really believe it is her intelligent approach that explains why she is so stupendous. I would like you to do an analysis of Johnny Mathis. Particularly, the song "Tenderly" from the album "Open Fire Two Guitars". I enjoyed this video very, very much!
I've seen her in four concerts, she is flawless. Now that she's much older it's harder for her to hold the long note. She is, arguably, the best vocalist who ever lived.
Thank you for your insights and explanations to those who are not expert or musicians. It helps show how much can learn about the beauty of a voice and how people are impacted by the apparent simplicity of a love. Much appreciated from 🏴

He is so underrated compared to Frank Sinatra (but I shoudn't compare the two). In fact, I don't even know if he is stilI remembered (wich makes my request totaly useless !). I would love to see on screen the difference between their voices. I think he was a drummer too. I find it always very interesting to hear how a musician uses his voice. Thank you Fil
Many years ago around the time of her singing in the movie Funny Girl I noticed that one of the reasons Barbara's voice has such a unique sound is that the waveform she produces which is her "tonal" signature born-in if you like as that she is almost two voices in one. Her sound has a very strong 2nd Harmonic that is an octave above the note her vocal cords are producing. It's very strong in proportion to the fundamental tone and gives her completely individual purity.
I've seen her in concert several times. She is like a human Stradivarius. You can't believe such a beautiful sound is coming out of a human being.

I’ve sung all my life…My late Mom said that I was “born with a pencil in one hand (portrait/art) & a microphone in the other!” I was going to be part of an “Elvis Review” with the original “Jordanaires” who backed Elvis; it fell thru in the end -but the organizer/auditioner immediately said that I carry my voice just like Linda! (Wow! ❤️🎶 That’s just careful listening from age 12- as I’m self-taught…& still listening!)
What do the lines thru words mean? Weird!
Another lady with amazing breath control. Superb range and technique and another one that anyone singing this type of repertoire can practice to to appreciate how hard it is ... and how easy she makes it look! It is fascinating to hear the isolated track and see what makes a voice unique ... loving these analyses.

Hello Dear, How you feeling today??
Hope everything is Ok with you over there 😊❤️
Thanks for this, Fil.
Fil, as a singer my whole life, I always learn things from your analyses of the singers you analyse, so to speak. Thank you very much!
Merci for this analysis. This was such a visual feast. Barbra is such a beautiful singer, and the wave forms show that she gave her all to this song.
@Bobb Grimley My bad, thanks.
I worked on Barbara's house in malibu about 15 yrs ago as it was being built i was there for a month and saw her and her husband often as they were checking on the progress of the work
She seemed nice to me
Did you go through her medicine cabinet? I think it's been long enough you can give us some idea.
I worked on one the beach residences in MALIBU colony in 1989? I had went up to LA to check it out and soon got on a crew making good money. At Malibu there was a house of some movie producer getting remolded inside I remember it was. next door to Michael Landon's. These were on the beach side the peons lived across the street and didn't have beach front . So poshandclassy laid back feeling. Man went all around santa Monica. Marina Del Rey hidden hills. Beverly .Venice. land of cosmetic surgery Lamborghinis and bloods and crips.
Wow!
💜
@@markr.devereux3385 na she actually lived next door she was building a second house because the first wasnt big enough to entertain
What a view
Simply a voice from the heavens. Great analysis.

Hello Dear, How you feeling today??
Hope everything is Ok with you over there 😊❤️
Thanks for playing this. Karen Carpenter, Barbara Streisand and Roberta Flack are my favourite female singers, although there are certainly many others whom I love. You've covered the first two. Maybe the third one some day? She does some terrific live versions of "Killing me Softly" or one of her other hits...
hand
Oh yes, Roberta Flack didn't get enough credit!
But, this review of Barbra is AMAZING! You have proven the beauty and uniqueness of these voices! Both artists used their voices like finely tuned musical.instruments.
Can watch these videos all day

Hello Dear, How you feeling today??
Hope everything is Ok with you over there 😊❤️
Fil another great analysis! Barbara has always made it look effortless, since the 60s, when I first saw her in movies and other performances. She always grabs the listeners attention when she "all of a sudden" hit the high notes. Thanks for the attention to the minute details!💖
Hello Dianne how are you doing?
These analyses just keep getting more interesting as I get better at viewing the wave forms. Thank you so much for such informative videos.
She is a legend I saw her in concert and her voice just melts you in your seat. And when it was over I didn’t want it over lol. I was in awe and shock with such a soothing voice.
You know Fil can sing when he matches the pitches of one of the greatest singers who ever lived.
Well said 👏🏽👏🏽
Yup. Male and female.
I dont think so
No denying the accuracy of this voice. The vibrato is insane. Excellent job again Fil! Thanks so much. 👍🏻🙂
There are only a few that have a truly magnificent voice and Barbra has one. She can always give me chills.
I knew it was a tour de force but now I can see it. Thanks for the side by side of Barbra and her voice❤️
You always teach me something in your vids... Thank you!
Left me Breathless
Wow😉
Of course I mean you're analysis as well as Barbara's performance :)
You're attention to detail with the vocal chart as well as piano descriptions on the bottom of the screen is exceptional ! You are educating the world about all kinds of music on here
So appreciated 😎
Rock🤟
Thanks so much for this! The magic and beauty of Streisand, visually displayed. I learn so much from you!
Her vocal talent surpasses all others. Beyond words ... the greatest natural singer of all time. 💞
Talent like hers is far and few today. Thanks for sharing your established knowledge with us.
They broke the mold with Barbra‼️. Such a performance. Always well worth your $. Thanks Fil☦️👩🏻🦳♥️🇺🇸
Barbra !! Always spectacular. Thanks for this one Fil 👏🏽👏🏽
Hello Andrea how are you doing?
You know the audiences L-O-V-E-S you when they are giving you a standing ovations before you've sung your song. The one and only, multi-talented, Ms Barbra Streisand👍👏👏👏
Thumbs up Brother.
Interesting Video.
Thanks for your Work.
Keep serving us great Content.
💝
Phenomenal video and analysis, I have never learnt so much on any video before.... Barbra Streisand is a technical genius and I am looking forward to you one day doing one of her more difficult songs "my man" "somewhere", etc to hear the accuracy of her vocals on those. Thanks for the stunning videos
It's great to see the objective proof of how fantastic Barbra is. I'd love you to do a Bee Gees song, particularly a live ballad like Run to Me from their peak in the 70s comparing Barry and Robin. There are some great performances from Chicago and Melbourne.
Another great analysis, Fil. You are so perceptive and interesting, as well as respectful of the great talents that you cover.
Terrific video! One of my all-time favorite vocalists.
I love how he appreciates every kind of music he. You can tell with his sweet smile. It is so interesting. I have subscribed and watched a few of these now. I am enjoying this and learning so much. Thank you. A lot of work goes into his videos. I love Barbra.
Thank you for this video! I can clearly see the difference of Barbra Streisand to all the performers now, in my generation, she is really the greatest star! I'm learning about her and it would be an interesting journey!
One of my fave live concerts! Thanks for looking at this. 😁
another excellent video, with yet another example of one of the greats showing off the mastery of her instrument.
Have you ever done a video on how and why certain singers can make the hairs on you body stand up on end?
This version hit me for 6. Just wow! th-cam.com/video/udLeOOy6em4/w-d-xo.html
No!🙂
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 Wouldn't that very from person to person why some artists can make your hair stand on end or give you goosebumps but not the person sitting next to you or vice versa?
@@drewpall2598
Of course.
@@wingsofpegasus
Is there a chance that you would?
Nice analysis!
I would love to hear your analysis of Johnny Mathis’s vocals.
thinking the same. Johnny in his prime was brilliant. I heard him in concert many times, always a great concert.
"Misty" would be interesting. I bet that vibrato would be a gigantic yellow squiggle.
Hello, from Brazil ! 😁🇧🇷 Barbra Streisand is amazing ! She's got a great gift . Her shows are really interesting, specially when she performs a song from her movie called Yentl. She interacts with herself on a screen , have you ever seen it ? It' s overwhelming. Great video Fil, God bless you
I love your channel and how educational and engaging it is. My admiration for Miss Streisand has gone way up. Please could you react to her Classical Barbra album (any of the songs)? I think you in particular will appreciate and enjoy. Also the songs Prisoner, A piece of Sky, Left in the dark again, Time Machine, Send in the clowns, Make it like a Memory. ❤
Another bang up job of explaining, illustrating, demystifying one of the world's great voices, yet, thereby enriching out appreciation of it.
Great video thanks. She is a fantastic vocalist.
I have seen her sing live over 50 times. I am the luckiest person in the world!
Nice to know I have excellent taste based on a technical analysis of Barbra's voice. Thanks for the confirmation.💗😇🎶
In the song Enough is Enough with Donna Summer, just as they were going into the disco part, Barbra held a note out for about a minute.
Hi Fil, I’m so glad I found your channel. I absolutely love it. I sing as a hobby and love learning about this. Thank you so much from Toronto 👋🏼💕
I get shivers every time I hear her sing this song whether it's live or recorded I have always loved her singing such a great singer
As usual very informative! Thank you...I have even more appreciation for Ms Streisand's voice.
Such a great voice.
The best vocalist of my lifetime. WHAT a gift!
Saw her live in London 2007. Goosebump inducing.
At 12:30, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are in awe.
Thanks for the kind words!
Insanely jealous you have managed to see her four times. I think she is totally magical in so many ways
Thank you for your insights and explanations to those who are not expert or musicians.
It helps show how much can learn about the beauty of a voice and how people are impacted by the apparent simplicity of a love.
Much appreciated from 🏴
Hi Fil, it's been about 4 weeks now how is your wrist coming along, have you had it look at by a doctor recently we're all wish you well and enjoying your auto tune pitch correction vocal analysis as we wait for the day that you can Rock out on your guitars again. 🤘🎸
It's crazy what she can do with her voice ! And to be able to see it on screen is so interesting ! Thank you for that Fil !
I have a request: I would like a Mel Tormé analyze, please !
Brilliant! I'd love to see your take on "I Never Has Seen Snow" by Barbra. :)
You have to discover Mina Mazzini. Barbra loves her. Many voices in one. The best european singer. ❤❤
Fantastic analysis! Now, I'd also love to see her "On A Clear Day" - as she hits those notes!
Yes, especially the live version from 1994 (MGM Grand), it's mind-boggling.
