@@DesertRatRacer late reply but yes. it took quite a bit of drilling, for some reason the bit did very little on the broken bit, and I had to buy a different bit but I was able to stick the broken bolt and extract it. Halleluiah.
Mine broke right at the end of the threads, I think its just the shank left in there. Im going to order an extractor set like yours but reverse drill bit. Im hoping the drill or the extractor is enough to grab it to pull out because I dont think are any threads left I did everything I could to prevent the breakage, tapped the main pin and case to loosed it up, then heated the case for over 10 minutes. That bolt is so brittle. 06 Ranger. Longest brake job ever
Sounds like a long brake job. If you think there is no thread maybe a magnet can get it out. Mine had like 1 thread or less I think. So not really stuck in there, just hard to get out. Good luck with it. 😎🙏
What’d you end up using as a replacement? I found that the most available Dorman bolt, runs shorts by about 1/4” and doesn’t reach the other sidewall. Any advice will help, thanks!
@@kosmin1448 I didn’t need to replace one. just removed this one so not sure… but if I remember right Yukon made one that looks different than all the basic ones.
They sell the kit for doing what you did. My thought is making a new retainer pin that will not shear off. Different material so it doesn't shear in the 1st place. This is a common failure.
That's a good idea. Yea it is very common. I just noticed yukon gear might make a stronger one. It looks different. Everyone looks to be selling direct replacement ones.
@@DesertRatRacer I can't be the 1st to think of it. Lots of folks with lathe capability to make those. I'm just down this rat hole now where I see a problem and see the fix as the removal kit. Thanks for feedback. Reviewing the replacement part now from a metallurgy view. Don't want to make a pile of these and see it was not a good idea.
@@DesertRatRacer My Pin came out with no effort. Stopping days earlier and thinking helped. Found a guy doing exhaust bolts saying to torque the bolt tighter then looser , going back and forth, limited torque so you don't bust it off. I tried this. Then used old POS HF air ratchet that didn't have much power to it. Same deal tighten/loosen. Bolt just came out . Going to make a new pin out of 17-4 PH that will increase material strength from ~ 50 - 60 kpsi to 200 kpsi on tensile strength. Figured what the hell, Figure I will not ever see this particular bolt again. Why 17-4 over other choices? I got material on Rack and can heat treat it with ease. Just 1 hour at 900C and air cool.
@@johnm840 that’s an interesting technique. I feel like a lot of times they’re already broke before removing. The last one I did in this video the broke piece could have been spun out by hand. So if it was seized enough to cause a break I don’t think that would be the case… unless I’m missing something. Either way I’m happy you got yours out in one piece, and it definitely can use an upgrade. You kind of loose me at the material selection and stuff. That’s above my pay grade. I’d watch a video about you upgrading the bolt material. It would be interesting. 😎🙌
Any bit I have just skates on the top of the broken pin. The bit in the kit I ordered does too. So, I went looking for a solid carbide drill bit. Stuff is expensive but I ordered 2 different bits from 2 vendors. If carbide can't do the trick I will have to cut...which really sucks.
man I bought the kit and the broken pin broke off past the pins and then I tried to drill it out with no luck. I have been working on this for over a month now off and on. No drill bit I have bought will even penetrate this bolt.
Since it’s past the pin I wonder if the threads are completely broke off and that piece is just spinning in there. Might try spinning it with hand tool to see what it does, or see if you can get a magnet or something to stick to it and pull it out. Mine still had a thread but might have been able to twist it out without the removal tool.
Did you ever get it out? My pin broke off way past the threads and if anything is left its a small piece too. The cross bolt barely slides each direction.
i was just taking mine apart for parts, but I see a few on eBay for sure maybe amazon too, but need to double check part numbers. Plus probably some auto parts stores and websites have it. Just look for 8.8 cross pin bolt.
If there's not much holding it in,.... why would it break there,...I mean,... it was enough to twist off the bolt,... but yet you turned it out,... with a little drill bit,.... what are we not seeing here........
Exactly, it didn’t break from being seized otherwise it work be hard to remove. Probably broke from the force of the cross pin where it touches that bolt. Maybe just a bad choice of bolt or something. I’ve seen some aftermarket ones that are built a little different. The shank basically is the same size all the way through.

thanks gave me a idea to my bolt out. I used the centering idea. I had a drill bit extender for wood bits. it wobbled but works. Many Thanks
