    G80 diff lock is actually very, very robust. This truck probably has a oversized 35" tire (there's like 5" lift you can see in the video) and the driver was wheeling the shit out of this. He probably put pedal to the metal while rock climbing.

    • @Mr_Ruhl
      @Mr_Ruhl ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're horrible! Those two spider gears spinning on a bare metal shaft is a dumbass design. Also the lock up is quite violent when it slams into lock mode. There's a reason these things have a reputation for bombing, then removing that pin to replace it can be a nightmare!

      @@Mr_Ruhl Any aftermarket options available for a 2018 Diesel ZR2? Mine's currently screwed, with the center block carved away, and i'm either going OEM or aftermarket. Just can't find any aftermarket options out there.

      Sounds like someone is compensating for having a g80 and not a lsd lol g80 is junk it locks the tires up completely and gets the job done but the way it violently locks up is why they are known for exploding when it locks up it puts extreme stress on the spider gears and diff carrier awful design get a lsd lol

    G80 and the gov locker are not the same rear end. One was from 73 and phased out mid 80s, the eaton g80 was introduced afterwards and is still in use today. That truck looks like its modded and driven by a jack ass. Probably blew it up themselves. But main point, is thats not a gov bomb

  • @jasonrogers9169
    @jasonrogers9169 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's the thing with these rear end's. Eaton made them specifically for gm and they are rated by eaton for gm and gm builds a vehicle around that rating and it will last for years but like all moving parts they will wear and adding stress to moving parts to which they are not rated will cause damge. That being said eaton also created such things to handle that stress in 14 bolt 9 and a half and 14 bolt 11 inch specifically for this purpouse. Now flooring a thirty year old rear differential with 300,000 miles on it and the oil has never been changed doesnt make it a horrible thing or putting giant wheels and tires on a high speed diff and trying to take off like a race car doesnt make it a bad thing. Now using as the manufacture built around it is one of the most awsome things ever created for a vehicle especially a 4 wheel drive. Yes i have broke them but i was way out of specs and mostly due to my own ignorance. That being said i have broke one of the drive gears in one and if not for the locking thing i would not have made it home as it would catch and turn the other wheel until it released at 20 something mph and start free spining so i let off the gas and slow down and get back in it and it would lock again and away i went yes it took a while at this pace but i wasnt stranded and made it home. I now have a 14 bolt corporate locker in place that can take a beating and changed 3.42's to 4.10's with my 4 inch lifted suburban 4x4 and big wheels and tires you know the proper way and it is literally a monster. Easy turning nice and smooth no binding from stress. That thing will pull a house apart as before i would pull the truck apart.

The clicking sounds like there coming from the driveshaft . I’m doing uJoints fersure but my dad wants to remove the spider gears and switch them out again(we did this two years ago) he said the truck feels like it binds when it wants to shift gears. He doesn’t think it’s the u joints because there’s no slack in them. I just don’t want it to be that part you removed in the last two minutes of this video ha ha haa..

    Is the G80 used in the trucks the same as the G80 used in the Astro/Safari vans? I'm about to buy a 2005 Safari and it has the G80 diff. Should I be concerned?

  • @matt9c1
    @matt9c1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    "These LSD systems are highly prone to failure" Incorrect. The G80 has been used at least as early as the 1982 model year and...they are fine. The problem I see is a failure between the headrest and the steering wheel. Some "expert" had to take a well engineered truck and "make it better" with the lift kit and oversize ties and who knows what other shitty mods were done. I am on my 4th silverado and I haven't had a single issue with the G80. I am at 279,000 miles on my 2009. Running fine. Then again, I left it alone and drive it with some intelligence.

    • @dustinoverbey6068
      @dustinoverbey6068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the problem is when the locker engages at high RPM, a manual locker is engaged before you accelerate (unless youre an idiot) if youre offroading and you try to blast up a hill, it'll break, if youre trying to accelerate hard in the winter on a slick road, it'll break
      the correct driving method with a g80 is keep it in the low RPM, let it lock, then accelerate, they are good an reliable units as long as you don't drive like a jackass, or want to do series offroading, in which case, upgrade to a manual locker before other mods (and depending on the year, build up the 4L60 as well, those cant handle much stock)

      And the fact this had a big lift and big tires on it.

    • @Tk3997
      @Tk3997 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dustinoverbey6068 Except no it won't do either of those things, because if just stomping the gas on an icy surface actually could they would never be used given that the major point of the damn thing is improved traction in slippery conditions. The reality is that about the only way to blow it up reliably is to ridiculously over-reving the engine on a surface where one wheel can slip.
      The simple fact is that saying these units are 'prone to failure' is a straight up false. They do not cause routine issues in stock vehicles that aren't driven incredibly stupidly at all.
