I like how Sony Animation trying to differentiate themselves from their rival Pixar. While the other tried to be closer and closer to realism, SA tried to get further away from it and created their stylized approach on every film. Gotta hand it to 'em since Hotel Transylvania 3.

Honestly I’d have to disagree, Sony animation has always been incredibly hit or miss. There are obviously incredible standout gems like this and spiderverse, but they also have cut a lot of corners in the past (cough cough emoji movie). Pixar has always been consistent, and the stylisation has never really been an attempt at realism in terms of people. The people in Soul definitely don’t look like real people, nor do the people in Luca. And maybe say, Andy in Toy Story, has become more realistic over the years, that’s because the concept of living toys is already cartoonish, and he keeps us grounded. I hope Song keeps putting out gems like this, but honestly I don’t think they can keep it up for long.
@@pineappleunicorn7729 Here's where I have to disagree too. Pixar & Disney try to hit realism as much as possible with their artistic style choice, as seen in Zootopia. The settings and backgrounds in these films are extremely realistic. In "Raya and the Last Dragon," critics praised it for its realism and art. However, this artistic direction comes at the cost of the writing and storytelling. I miss the unique styles that they did cause now their movies all jumble together. Sure, good branding, but it does get boring.
As for Sony, at least they have distinct art styles that vary with each film. It keeps things unique and I remember their films more. Sure they don't have amazing movies 24/7, but Pixar & Disney didn't either, as seen with "Brave," or any of their spin off/sequel titles, "Ralph Breaks the Internet" and "Mulan 2" come to mind.

@@Lianzi_Spl you’re lumping Disney and Pixar into one box here, and that’s a big issue. Disney and Pixar and completely separate animation studios, I’m not here to talk about what Disney are doing because yes, they have settled into one art style. Pixar movies absolutely have distinct looks that vary between films, a lot of backgrounds may lean more towards realism but each film has unique characters, Merida, Joe Gardner, and Luca look absolutely nothing like eachother, the people from each of those films don’t belong in the same world, if you take a look at the concept art for Turning Red you’ll see that that little girl looks different again. Think of Up too, Carl and Russell absolutely look nothing like real people. I also don’t believe at all that a realistic art style is compromising on story quality, right now Pixar is branching out in terms of its directors and most of the new films are very personal to the specific directors. I’d also advise you to take a look at Pixar’s shorts, they sometimes experiment with different animation styles there and it’s great. The creative teams who worked on Spiderverse and Mitchells are INCREDIBLE, their work is groundbreaking and the animation style is stunning, but there was a time where everything Pixar was doing was groundbreaking too, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with adding a little realism to animation, the two can work in tandem. I truly hope Sony does more incredible films like this, but frankly I don’t have a lot of hope given their track record.
One of the many things I really love about the animation in Spider Verse and Mitchells is that whenever bright lights hit the characters, they look almost completely 2D. The artists and animators at Sony Imageworks/animation never miss!!

This movie is incredible! This is the kind of animation I love to see where digital and traditional techniques come together to create something unique. I love the additions of "Katie-vision" because it really adds so much personality to the film and tells us a lot about her and what goes on in her mind. It really feels like a love letter to all those who grew up being the creative weirdos.
With just this film, Spider-Man into The Spider-verse, and even the Hotel Transylvania series I think SONY is now seeing that they are creating animated films that the audience didn't know they wanted and no other animated studio is providing and that is films that fully embrace the fact that they are animated. Like, say what you want about the Hotel Transylvania series, a lot of people including myself love the films just for the fact that it has this Saturday morning cartoon high-energy style animation which has become a rarity in animation especially in movies, and then there is Spider-Verse and The Mitchells Vs The Machines where they explode with style and creativity with the blending mixes of 2D and 3D animations. I love animations, but at times I'm disappointed how a lot of animated films tend to just be a look, but the animations and style try to be almost Natural/Realistic (Hense why Disney finds it easy to do Live-Action remakes), So I'm very happy to see SONY finally giving me animated movies that go crazy and creative with its animation.
And unlike other major western animation studios, Sony Animation has 4 adult animated (PG-13 or R rated) movies in the works for theaters.

This and Klaus are two of my favourite animated films of the last two years. Pixar hit an absolute high note with Coco, but its great to see other studios stepping up and creating not only gorgeous animations, but movies with heart.
Klaus doesnt get the credit it deserves. Its a beautifully animated film

I completely agree with you It was phenomenal
I guess there are some similarities to Spider-Verse… The outlines on everything, the actual lines that contour to edges in the human face (like dimples), and the speed lines and duplicates to sell fast motion!
But the similarities stop there lol. These guys are bringing SO MUCH new things to the table! Huge respect for the animation, modeling, and look development teams ✊
This movie is even more impressive on a technical level than a visual level, which is INSANE because the visuals are already mind-blowing.
Absolutely loved the movie, especially the hand-drawn look of it!! I'm kinda surprised the staff just outright explain how they made the effects :o So great to see how Sony is making more films that really experiment with what animation can be, I think they're my favourite animation studio now!!

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse's animation consists of a comic-like animation that brings out Miles Morales' passion of becoming the superhero
The Mitchell's vs. The Robot's animation touches on the main characters' passion to create movies. It defines her passion for creation.
Oh man, this is going more in-depth than I thought. These guys are really pushing the boundaries of animation, not just in movies! This is the kinda stuff I wanna do when I get older, being part of this revolution. Can't be too hard, right? XD

The animation for this movie was fantastic! I love that we're mixing the 2D stylized 3D stuff in large projects like this now.
It's also suuuuuppperrrrr surreal to hear Mic Drop in the background. As an army, I appreciate that music choice!

What I love about this movie and Spider-Verse is almost every shot can be put on a poster. Seriously while watching the movie pause just randomly and you'll see what I'm talking about. Especially in Spider-Verse but this one as well

This was an incredible movie. I love the attention to detail It's so obvious that you all put so much of your heart and talent into each frame of this film. I've watched it several times and every time I see it there's something else that pops out that I never noticed. One of the times that I watched the movie I paused all throughout to catch things that you could not see unless you paused the movie And it just blew my mind How many hidden messages, images etc that are throughout the movie. Thank you to everyone that was involved in the making of this incredible movie.

So much more innovativ than Disney and Pixar have produced the past decades. This takes the ART of animation to a whole new level. The story is also hartwarming and funny an thank god no princesses, I love the whole packages. Thank you Sony and Netflix for believing in these amazing creators.

I watched it in my older brother’s account instead of my own but I don’t have too, I watched it first up to the last absorbing every details in each scenes, they’re all spectacularly beautiful keep it up and next Netflix animation movie I’ll watch in my own account
Would've loved to have seen this in theatres
We watched this for movie night last Friday and watched it at least once a day since. My 1&1/2yr old loves it almost as much the Cloudy movies. Wish I could post a picture of him watching it last night. It was so adorable!!
I absolutely adore this film! Keep making the behind the scenes videos and I will keep watching. I’m also ready to buy merchandise. There needs to be a stuffed Monchi for sale!

They pushed the perfection of Spider-Man into the spider-verse even further with this. What can I say except: Disney, now someone took the job that you used to have (creativity and uniqueness) while you just do forgettable animation that looks like every other studio's animation (Blue Sky, Illumination, DreamWorks, Pixar, ...) . So sad. Sony, keep up the good work 👍🏻👏🏻! The new Disney is Sony, they're taking risks and make their movies look unique, like animation should be.

man i hope i can get my hands on the art book (i think they’re making one???), the visuals had me floored throughout, and seeing the process in this video just has me even more enthralled !!i think with this and spiderverse, sony can be forgiven for the emoji movie. lord and miller just pumping out treats for the eyes like it’s nothing lmao, the crew did a fantastic job!

Seriously guys, you have save 3D animation for me, make it as 2D as possible and super stylish, I just adore the look of both Spiderman into the Spiderverse and Mitchells vs the Machines, this films looks leaps AHEAD of anything Pixar or Disney have done in the last 10 years, not Soul, not Coco, not Frozen, not Tangled (and I love those films.....not so much Soul, good film still) look this amazing and unique, can't believe the same studio did the EMOJI movie (never again pleasee), Sony animation owns his life to Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Can you please add captions to this-- preferably real captions, but at least the autocaptions? Accessibility is important. Thanks!

It seems like Sony is the only animation studio that's realized you'll never beat Disney and Pixar by imitating them. You need to produce something that they can't or won't make.

visually speaking im equally as impressed as i was with into the spiderverse but i still think the story reeks of boomer vision. Maybe i'll withhold my judgement and give it a go! Always love to see something new and unique in the animation world.
As someone who’s seen the movie already, without spoilers, they fortunately didn’t go all black and white with the boomer vs millennial dynamic in the movie than how the marketing apparently handled it. They showed the pros and cons of both age groups.
