When I was younger (before the Lion King was put into the vault), my parents didnt want me to see it because they thought I would get nightmares. A few years later, they decided I could see it, only to discover the vault system. As a result, after 12 years of waiting... I saw the Lion King for the first time a few days ago. I'm obsessed.
Your parents might have been right not letting you see the movie until you were older, even though the movie is rated G, when you think about it, Simba's uncle Scar arranges a stampede to happen, and in the mist of the stampede happening, he kills Simba's dad, and then frames him for it, and tricks Simba into thinking he killed his own father. It is hard to say if it would have given you nightmares when you were younger, but it might have.

Honestly because of the rise of the internet the vault has lost a lot of its power. you can still buy used copies and find the movies in digital form in all corners of the internet.

It's lost some of its power, but not totally. You can't buy _legal, new_ copies (even digital copies) of vaulted films. Yes, piracy and resale will always be an option, but A) some people never buy used nor pirate, and B) it will be a long time before either of those is a larger market than legal and new.
The vault was more effective then because not only was internet not a thing but they used VHS tapes which meant that the more people used it the more it got torn up and stop working so they would have to buy another copy when it came back on sale
@@scaper8 you can get 9 of the 16 movies legally on TH-cam from TH-cam movies, the ones you can't get are Fantasia, Cinderella, sleeping beauty, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the jungle book, the little mermaid, and Aladdin.

I remember when I was little I accidentally broke my Lion King disc and had to wait years to get a replacement. It was my favourite Disney movie too but now I know all the words to the songs and pretty much every line of dialogue from heart just from re-watches. I am not ashamed

Maybe 10 or 15 years ago, my sister was absolutely obsessed with Fantasia. She had spent years trying to find the movie. One December day, I happened to find it in our local Costco and decided to get it for her for Christmas. I had never seen her cry so many happy tears when she opened it.
So Snow White was nominated for one Oscar, and then won two?

It's because It won an Honorary Oscar for being the first animated film ever. However, the award was specially made to have One regular sized statue and seven miniature ones. So, really, it won 9 Oscars from one nomination

Mastah Frederique it's crazy to think Disney has been planning on practically bankrupting Netflix creating their own streaming service to watch everything they've ever created & now owning Marvel, Starwars + fox (Movies and Shows). Can't wait to see how that works out lol I wonder if their new version of the vault will end up being "charging extra" every so often (to see the classics in HD again) ❔

Your prediction from last year was correct! According to the latest Disney Investor’s meeting, the Disney+ service is planning on permanently introducing all 16 vaulted movies into the movie lineup by 2020.

It looks like it lost best score in 38 but won honorary in 39. So I think he was wrong. It was nominated for one and won one- just not the one for which it was nominated
Last Resort because they don't sell secondhand copies... anything from the vault was locked up so long ago, the media they were written on was completely degraded... so either mint condition collectors stuff that's completely overpriced, or not all.... although, now we live in a new age, the age of digital.... aside from copyright infringement... we may NEVER see a movie vaulted again because media today.... well, let's just say there's always something on the internet...

If I really wanted to watch a Disney movie then saw it was locked away from me in the hopes that in a decade I would still want it I'm gonna pirate it
I do not really see how it is anti-consumer, it just helps maintain their value. Besides with every subsequent re-release they have enough supply to satisfy demand until the next re-release, so using it as an excuse to justify piracy is just that, an excuse.

When I was a kid I never got to see The Lion King because of the Disney Vault. I only knew the sequel and I loved it so much that every year when Christmas came I hoped that it would be my present from Santa. When I was old enough to understand the Vault system (and that there is no Santa) it then sparked a huge passion for collecting all Disney films on DVD and every year for Christmas I would get whatever film was out of the vault and we would watch it on Christmas Eve. And when the Lion King finally was out of the vault, my parents remember that it was my most wanted film and got me the special edition in a wooden box with all 3 films. The tradition of watching one Disney film on Christmas stuck by the way, even though now it is not limited to vault films anymore. I am 22 now and still my mother and I watch a Disney film every year on Christmas. So in hindsight I am not sure whether I like or hate the Disney Vault :D

My parents bought The Lion King on VHS tape when I was a kid. It was about 13ish years ago. I guess I was lucky that I was able to get it. I think they didn't even know about the vault and just happened to get it.

My parents bought almost all the disney movies on VHS back in the 90s. Until we threw them out about 6 months ago (purely because getting a VHS player was a hassle), they all still worked too.
Granted, these were technically 'bootleg' VHS tapes, but they had no difference in quality, so...
I have it on VHS and DVD, I don't get what the problem is, in Belgium you can buy every disney movie

Actually, the vault is likely to increase copyright infringement as being officially unavailable those of less integrity will provide the supply to the demand.
So piracy (sic) does care about vaults (and is extremely grateful for them).
when I was a little kid my whole family often got dragged over to my mom's friend's house for HOURS. naturally, five year olds will get bored of terrorizing an almost 20 year old cat with sharp claws and an attitude. so we would watch the lion king, which they had on dvd. at this point, you couldn't really just buy literally anything online, so it was super awesome that they had it. I used to complain about always watching the same movie, but now that I understand the vault system, I treasure those memories, because without them, I might never have seen lion king in my life. seriously.
I cant possibly be the only one to realize that the vault has a surprising number of those disney movies that have recently be turned into live action over the last few years.....
Well I kinda understand it as they are the older, more lucrative films.
Although it seems we've all forgotten that 101Dalmations was made into live action years and years ago. I wonder if they will do another or just skip right over it.

I absolutely love the history behind Disney making Snow White; how much of a risk it was and how much it paid off, and how it shaped film and entertainment for YEARS to come! I work at Disneyland, and to see the way the world has changed because of one movie makes me love my job all the more!

It just came out of the vault again this week. Before that it had been out for I think a year in 2011 but it hasn’t been available the last 5 years or so.

Most, if not all of these titles are available online in platinum and diamond edition.

I've seen Song of the South. The Live-Action parts are okay but the animated segments are actually pretty good. As for the controversy I think people just misunderstood it and blew it out of the water.

This is why most of my oldest Disney movies are still on VHS. Especially Aladdin! I love that movie and I still don't have it on DVD. 😭

I absolutely share your sentiment with regards to 'Mary Poppins'! It is, and has been for over two and a half decades, easily one of my favorite Disney films (second only to 'Fantasia').

In retrospect it makes total sense why I never watched any classic Disney movies at home growing up. Neither of my parents would have put up with this release strategy just to get movies I never showed interest in.
I wanted Beauty and the Beast for years before I knew about the vault...Frustrating times! Was so glad when it finally came out of the vault in the 2010s.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. In other words, what makes you think they'll stop their vault for any reason? It makes them tons of cash.
Maybe they'll do it seasonally for each movie, or charge an extra $5 per month to include them or something
I suspect it'll be a lot like HBO Go. They'll just rotate their movies every once in a while. And, so you'll have to wait about six months to a year for them to show up again after about a month of play.

I remember when I was little my grandma went out and got all the movies from the Disney vault that where part of the classics era (no Disney renaissance movies) and we bindge watched them when I was like 4. I remember it having an announcement at the start of every movie with this mouse shaped vault opening! It was probably the best weekend at my Grandmas ever

Every year? Wasn't the Platinum edition the 10th anniversary one in 2004, Diamond Edition the 20th anniversary one in 2014-ish, and now for some reason this Signature collection edition this year. Of course those are just The Lion King but point being an individual movie doesn't come out every year.

The vault is also something that will probably end up falling apart completely.
A lot of the vaulted movies were still relatively easy to acquire at used video/dvd sales and now the vault movies are also being used by people who buy them up and scalp people on eBay with them
I saw Snow White in theaters when it was re released. Pretty sure it was the early 90s. Same with the Jungle Book.
I just went through all my old VHS tapes to see how many of these I actually had growing up. It seems I have all of them, except for Jungle Book, and with multiple copies of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Fantasia. Maybe those multiples make up for the missing Jungle Book??

I have fond memories of my dad taking me to the Disney Store to buy our minister edition video releases. They used to include limited edition artwork for each video... still have them and they bring me such happy memories!!!

I seem to remember circa 2001, they released Beauty & the Beast in IMAX theaters, since it was the latest technology(I saw it, and it was AMAZING). Was that part of the vault thing or totally unrelated?
I remember when watching Disney movies on some old DVDs and they showed those adds before the selection screen and a date for one then say something "hurry before it goes back to the vault" and I was very confused as a kid. But this video explained it to me after so long..so thanks!
I have actually had the lion King for some time now, but on VHS, so I could watch it whenever, along with (on VHS) Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, the Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, the Jungle Book, the Little Mermaid, and all 3 Aladdin movies (I think there are 3)

I think Alice in wonderland is really underrated it was my favorite when I was little (closely followed by Peter pan) ☕🍄👑❤️🌹
It really is underrated isn't it? I love the Mad Hatter, my favorite character in the movie. Peter Pan is great as well, I used to have the book of Peter Pan. Don't think I have the book any more unfortunately. I remember that I would dream of going into Alice in Wonderland movie and Peter Pan movie, lol.

I remember my grandma saying that she bought the VHS tapes for us when they came out so that we (her grandchildren) could watch them one day, since DVD’s were unheard of back then. She was surprised when we told here how much they could be worth. I know she had Snow White and The Little Mermaid, and I think she had the Lion King too.
