  • Work continues on the 460ci big block chevy (454 bored 30 over). In this episode we'll talk about head gaskets, heads, and compression ratio. I'll also show you proper rocker arm geometry, how to measure push rod length, and how to set hydraulic lifter preload. We're inching closer to putting this on the dyno, and getting it installed in the 1972 Chevelle known as "Independence".

      I know I did and it’s perfect “timing” no pun intended. I’m building my first engine and needed the explanation however I’ll be using stock heads and and hardware so I don’t need to measure pushrods. Thank goodness!

      I had Auto Shop, 1, 2, 3. Couldn't agree more. I had some "conduct behavior" disorders back then, as I am sure everyone in my auto shop did to some degree.
      People forget how important Auto Shop is for the kids that need hands on learning and maybe a place to feel valued. Not everyone's learns the same way.

      They made it to the part where he said his 10 year old can do it, realized they couldn't even change the air filter on their own car and rage quit......... but in all honesty, if I had to genuinely guess, I would imagine a certain amount of his audience doesn't know the first thing about a vehicle and watch him solely for the comedic value. Considering he actually got a little technical and wasn't goofing off as much as some of his other video, maybe they were dissatisfied? Running out of cold snack theory is just as possible though.

    Funny thing, this here segment was almost 42 minutes long, just about how long english class was in school, a guy was able to stay focused and pay attention here, english class........ not so much. Thank you for keeping us entertained, and teaching us a thing or 3 feller.

Cracking down on the rocker arm nut until it starts to sputter or backfire and then backing it off 3/4 of a turn? How many of your engines left Parts laying all over the track before even reaching Redline.

    Man I would pay for Derek to teach me and walk me through an engine build. I know it wouldnt be feasible, but like they have AK gun build clinics where you take your AK parts kit to a company and they teach you how to build it, building an engine with Dereks guidance would be such a sick experience as he makes for an awesome teacher.

    learned this back in the 80's from my grandfather on setting rocker preload . Works every time. If you run a stud girdle the poly locks won't move after clamped .

    Derek pulled the ultimate Columbo, here is a “feller” who uses any blunt object to “tune” a crusty carb while pretending to be real simple like, and then posts a video like this and just gets into the technical weeds like he is tying his shoes in the morning.
    Doing this build for what most would consider a scrap car makes it all the better. I aam a recent sub and have to say, Derek is a genius with practical blue collar common sense. Best damn channel on TH-cam.

    I've done a few engines, 318 Mopar, 302 Ford, two 350 Chevys. Now I've got this same 454 project in the works, been reading, books and online forums about builds, planning parts assemblies, strategizing different fuel injection scenarios, got a spreadsheet made up with cam numbers... then I found this channel! makes it look sooo easy! Thanks for making this series on the 454!

    The way you set the valve lash is EXACTLY how my teacher showed us when I took automotive at my community College. Real old school guy like you. Just crazy how that's how we did it in my engine building class.

    Hi Derek, Having been in engine research and development most of my working life, and finishing as a company training officer. I would give you top marks for your presentation of engine build instruction / information. So I believe you should not sell yourself short as an engine builder. Keep up with the the great work, love the humour, very similar to my own.

    I am just about to build an Olds 455 and add a roller cam. The block is at the machine shop as we speak. I can't even believe how timely the rocker geometry part was. Thank you sir!
