Great job, everyone! Proud to be a judge in residence with Commander Spellbook.
rings of brighthearth cannot copy basalt monolith's mana ability. You copy the untap ability, holding priority between untaps to tap it again.
Combo works like this:
(tapped monolith)
Pay 3 to activate Monolith untap ability, holding priority
Pay 2 to copy untap ability, let the copy resolve
Tap monolith for 3
let original untap resolve
tap monolith for 3
(Paid 5 mana, added 6, repeat)
You don't have to hold priority at all, there's a trigger with Rings of Brighthearth to copy an activated ability.
I, too, was yelling at my speakers in the car this morning.
Came here to say this. Who doesnt know this combo at this point lol
Thank you for already saying this
@@orgazmo686971 By my understanding you would hold priority in case someone else would have response effect.
City of Ass combos well with the foil Basalt Monolith for the extra infinite mana.
I'd love to visit the City of Ass
As a newer player, I love this episode. Will help me identify potential threats.
Joey you say Azami is not going to win with Overwhelming Stampede, but my Azami deck used Dragon Throne of Tarkir with cards like Sturmgeist, Empyrial Plate, Soramaro, or Psychosis Crawler. Wizard stampede!!!
Always looking for more combos. Loved this. Love Peer Into the Abyss+Underwood Dreams.
Thank you for the tips of optimizing the website. It really helps finding the cards.
new combo I want to spread awareness of:
Iso scepter+ narset's reversal
target ANY time spell
even ones that exile on resolution
oh shit
This is a great add to your website. Just please keep the ads under control. Love your website accept when the ads take over by blocking the menu at the top or high jack your website and force you to go to certain site over and over. Glad you guys have responded so fast when I complain about these too you guys via Facebook. Edhrec has grown by bounds and leaps it seems every year. I think the only thing that missing now is what cards in magic are missing to make the commander your researching. Also love the data base is so easy to use. Not sure this is possible or you need permission from wotc wish the cards had a link to the gatherer rule pages. Like if your looking at urza for example have a gatherer link to rules about urza. I know it easy to have another tab open to gatherer but it be a just nice ease of use.
I'm surprised that Marath, Will of the Wild didn't show up in the list.
But what I'm even more surprised about is that it wasn't even mentioned during the end of the podcast.
If people asked me if I know of a commander card - toolbox that can compete with Ghave, Guru of Spores in terms of synergy with other pieces, Marath would definitely be it.
I was about to point out the same. I have checked Ghave's combos page though, and most of them revolve around Ghave's ability to remove counters from other creatures, which Marath can't do.
However, Marath's combos page is way far from complete, it is only showing 4 of them, with no mention to Cathar's Crusade, Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives, Hardened Scales, Ivy Lane Denizen... so some work to do there
Sidenote: Great commentary guys. I would like to clarify a tiny error concerning Basalt and RoB. You CANNOT copy the mana ability (as per Ring rules text). As such, you copy the untap ability which then goes on the stack. That means when it untaps, you can retap it immediately in response and then it untaps again. You generate infinite mana regardless but it actually works just like Zirda. Just wanted to clarify.
I feel the exact same way as you Dana about combos. I even have a Niv Mizzet Parun deck without any of the combo pieces, simply a spellslinger deck that focuses on damage. It's way more fun and challenging to pilot !
Fun fact with mana maze: it can work as a repeatable silence effect, since you can cast a multicolored instant speed spell and shut of the colors for the opponent unless they have a card of different color or a colorless spell. It also makes all of blue counterspells pseudo uncounterable by other blue counterspells. The card is pretty hilarious
Hey guys. Long time user of EDHREC, and I'm loving the new combo page.
One suggestion - can we have them separated by what KIND of combos they are? Like if I just want to see infinite turns, I can filter out infinite tokens, and vice versa?
Keep up the good work!
Combo is just the most efficient way to win. If you're trying to make the most efficient, powerful version of a deck, it's gotta be combo.
FOOD CHAIN!!
Sorry, I hope you guys bring it up during the cast. I just had to comment my favorite card. Oh and keep up the great work!!
We focused primarily on the statistically most common combos, and Food Chain has so many other halves that combo with it that there there probably wasn't 1 other combo piece that pushed a specific Food Chain pair into our top lists.
I completely agree with Matt when it comes to combo. I only have one combo win under my belt and that was to snatch the win from the Siona combo player who luckily didn't have a haste enabler
Peregrine Drake combo is one that I use frequently. I run a Yarok deck so usually I do it with Shrieking Drake but I do run Deadeye Navigator and Man-o'-War as well.
Good to hear that 2 of my decks getting a mention with Unesh and Grenzp, Dungeon Warden and I do have the cards they mentioned in those decks
I've actually got Mana Maze in my Angus Mackenzie pillow fort/enchantments deck. Used to slow down opponents while I can fog and grind to get counters on a Helix Pinnacle :p
Amazing! Didn't know about this thanks!
Joey, maybe you're seeing combos where both cards are great on their own so much because a number of decks just have those two great cards added without the creator even knowing they combo together.
No decks will habe accidental combos with bad cards because bad cards won't be added without knowing of their combo potential.
Also, good cards probably tend to combo more efficiently because they do their thing well-- that's what makes them good.
Straight to the store for Mana maze lol. Never heard of it but it's goin in Urza NOW
I think every deck should have a definitive way to win the game, and with four players the best way to do that is infinite combos, or hard locking the table. You can play squirrel tribal and goof around but play the squirrel nest and earth craft in the deck. To me the best games of commander feature decks with interaction and a game plan, even if the deck is chair tribal. I guess I will continue to not understand why its even a question as to whether combos are ok, or stax is ok. Every archetype is valid, I personally get plenty of joy watching someone combo off, or fighting through a lock, as I do when I am doing those things. Just enjoy the game and have fun talking to the people there, if you lose just smile and shuffle up again. If you are friends with the people you play with, or are truly looking to have fun, let yourself have fun when they are having fun.
I also run Deadeye Navigator + Palinchron in Riku, and Deadeye + Peregrine in Roon. Fantastic combo
45:33 i've been wanting to make a combo deck with Vadrok, Apex of Thunder for a while. but this is indeed what I'm afraid of
In our play group combos might work once maybe twice because you become a target the second part of your combo hits the table
I've got Rings/Basalt in a deck as well as Dramatic/Scepter, but they're in Nin, the Pain Artist, so I feel like that deck needs some ways to not be slow and mopey anyways. Still, I have Brash Taunter/Stuffy Doll kind of things in that deck to hopefully damage opponents while drawing myself many cards.
Zombies definitely has Gravecrawler/Phyrexian Altar though. I did end up taking out Mike/Trike though, in favore of Mikaeus still, but adding Grave Pact, which I've actually had since Commander Anthology Vol II but never realized. I thought I had gone through and sold everything worth anything in the decks I didn't use, but apparently not.
Wow it’s so weird actually seeing the guys for the first time! No one looks how I’d imagined from the podcast!
I'm really shocked that worldgorger dragon combo isn't talked about. I love the exquisite blood combo but it's so much slower than worldgorger dragon.
I've definitely seen a lot more Worldgorger Dragon combos on the competitive side of EDH, and its probably a more powerful combo overall with enough support, but I understand why Exquisite Blood / Sanguine Bond is seeing more play. Lots of people love lifegain strategies, myself included. And a big advantage of those two enchantments is they are SO good in most situations, even when the combo isnt online. I'm totally okay just dropping a Sanguine Bond (or the new Vito) to drain out the scariest opponent with some lifegain, but outside of the combo cards like Worldgorger Dragon are tough work with. I hope that clears it up, these are the most popular combos, not necessarily the most powerful. Cause if they were we'd definitely see a LOT more Thassa's Oracle and other cEDH staples :P
Psh worldgorger dragon combo demonic consultation combo gg
Worldgorger is pretty much useless by it's self as far as I know, And without a deck built around it or at least putting a few cards towards it, it's mostly dead in hand. Esquisite blood, keeps you alive and sanguines bond makes your healing damage so I could see it played alot more often in that sense. But im going off my experience running my anje and krrik decks.
@@matthewmassengill7163 You clearly don't understand how the combo works or what it does. You never want to have worldgorger dragon in your hand and if by chance it ends up in your hand anyways you need to find a way to discard it. There are a number of ways to search and toss it into the graveyard the best of which is entomb. Once in the graveyard animate dead, dance of the dead or necromancy is used to reanimate it but comes with the stipulation that if the enchantment leaves the battlefield the creature dies. When worldgorger dragon enters the battlefield it exiles everything else including the enchantment and kills worldgorger dragon which returns the enchantment to target it again bringing it back again. This is an infinite Mana, infinite enter the battlefield effect and infinite leaving the battlefield effect combo and leaves me with a few different ways to win. This combo can go off as early as turn two or three with turn four or five being the lastest and is much more likely than it sounds when considering the amount of redundancy when compared to exquisite blood combo and also considering that there is also a commander that is a critical piece of this combo. When also taking into consideration the large amount of card draw and search that I run as well as not keeping a hand unless I have combo pieces or search I will have the pieces I need. I run both the worldgorger dragon combo and the exquisite blood combo but I rarely lose if I use the worldgorger dragon combo because it's so much faster and much easier to protect. So I guess what I'm saying is that if you go for the exquisite blood combo and I go for the worldgorger dragon combo you won't have the opportunity to complete the combo before I end the game.
@@Squee_666_9 What I said was, world gorger and it's combo pieces are not really good outside of that combo so I can see it not being run, I mentioned my anje deck which is basically just madness cards to draw into the combo. However it's a pretty lame way of playing magic and I only use it for certain things since. Why win on turn 3 with my semi cedh deck, While on the other hand in a deck like kirrik which is black lifegain sanguines bond and esquisite blood are both amazing cards to have out. and wouldn't have them in the deck for the combo to start with if they were not amazing by them selfs. So again, you build around world gorger, Blood bond is just two good cards in any lifegain deck with black in it.
Joey's reaction to Matt's first part of the joke....Joey is such a sweetheart.
I just put together an Emmara Soul of the Accord deck and was confused why Mirri was recommended. But there are a bunch of tap effects like Glare of Subdual in the deck and having a go wide token deck without having to worry about crack back sounds pretty great! If only she didn't cost quite as much money.
I'm with ya Dana... combo gots ta go!!! Lol. My Eutropia bogles and Gonti's rat colony decks are more aggro centered and in most games that I win its because I've got the interaction to keep the combo players at bay long enough for me to execute my game plan.
Awesome content :) tnx so much for all the effort :)
OH NO!!! u mentioned sliver queen :( its gonna spike in prices again Nooooooo
Love the dad jokes, 😂😂😂. Keep them comin’!
Keep the jokes and giggles over at limited resources they suck you can't even read the cards and it's two giant giggling heads all video
dragon ball talk Oof. Haven’t heard of them, but will go take a peak on their channel.
I can vouch for the whole Ghave thing. My Ghave deck is built as saproling tribal, bu there are a couple of infinite combos that are completely accidental and I only found by playing it
krenko, mob boss gets stupid fast with mana echoes and staff of domination. one activation usually wins the game
I run Kiki Conscripts in my Riku of Two Reflection decks, it's definitely a great pair of cards, either one by itself is good but having that option to just "oops I win" is great
Mana Maze is a *spicy* card it's so cool. I'd just take it against some decks to make sure all my blue spells cant be countered
That is crazy good.
I'm a pretty new player, and I was sitting here all proud of the little ramp combo I'd been doing with Fertilid and Evolution sage. lmao, how little I realized...
Also, definitely just bought 6 Mana Maze. It works in Kadena Morph and 5-color cycling reanimation and Alela Pillowfort!
Joey's reaction to the dad joke was hilarious
Matt's joke was great
Matt's joke is always great
Nice vid, one thing about the Rings of Brightearth + Basalt Monolith combo, u said you copy the mana ability, and u cannot do that, is written in the card itself (rings) u have to copy the untap ability. This maybe seems like not important, but it is. cuz u will need 2 extra mana to enable the combo, u tap for 3, pay 3 to untap, and with that ability in the stack u have to put another 2 mana for Rings to copy the untap, so, u'll need 5 total mana in the turn u will do the combo.
For Dana, playing only creatres is like playing hearthstone, and you know, no one likes hearthstone. One of the achivements of Magic is having the trifecta combo-control-aggro and the hibrids of those 3. SO thats an important part of the game.
All this "i liek to play combo but i murder my own deck stripping tutors to play badly" is not my thing. Its like trying to being polite... this is a game, no one said sorry in chess when eating alive ur queen.
I used to choose commamders to brew specifically for their combos but have since grown bored of that playstyle. So much so that i have all of those cards in my Tatyova deck and didnt realise i could use them together like that
I enjoy the scramble prior to a combo trying to resolve. That moment of desperation is a fun moment especially if someone can stop the combo. I like infinite combos a way to end a turn 12+ game because at that point I’d rather play another game. The most saltiest I been was losing to a Urza deck on turn 3 after I played a collector ouphe turn 2 in my gruul deck because that was my only way to stop it. Unfortunately that didn’t work.
I've got a foil palinchron, it untaps 7 and 3/8ths of a land
You cant copy the +3 mana ability for the rings combo since its a mana ability. You need two aditional mana to copy the untap ability
So I have a Challenge the Stats card, and it's right up Joey's alley. Maulfist Revolutionary is in WAAAY too few Meren decks. If you have a single experience counter and a sacrifice outlet, you can play the Revolutionary, get a second counter, sacrifice it for a third, and Meren will reanimate it at the end step to take you to 4 counters.
Literally run all 3 cards in the Tatyova combo in my Tatyova deck and never even thought of using them that way lol.
Mirri paired with another monster that has a lure effect sounds fun, but glare of subdual in response to their declared attack is especially mean
For me it all depends on WHEN a combo is likely to go off. If you can reliably win between turn 2 to 5 regularly because of a combo, I think that is boring and unfun. However, if you have a combo that will not go off until between turn 6 and 9 then I feel like that is a completely legitimate win. Not any different than a Craterhoof. It still took time for you to build up to your wincon and everyone got to play with their cards. I have Cathars crusade, and Alter in my Ghave deck but I purposefully left out tutors. My saprolings can win on their own but if I happen to get to my infinite combo the game is at a good point to conclude. Just my 2 cents :)
Awesome shirt Matt! Go Broncos!
Tatyova just needs Laboratory Maniac in game and it'll be eventually a win when you try draw empty deck. 😎
Or thassa's oracle
A lot of combo players in my playgroup I try my best to not feel bad when they win but it’s hard sometimes probably cuz of the out of nowhere feeling. I respect it more now and have my own now with Kalamax and niv Mizzet
That Foil Mana Crypt no wonder is so expensive! It gives you an extra half mana :P
Would it be possible to make this overview somewhat of a tree view? There are a lot of combos that are enabled by let's say two creatures and another card. Either a sac outlet, etb or ltb pinger etc. There you could just visualize the combo by a tree where following from node to node you will always get a combo, as you also mentioned in the beginning around minute 5. This would reduce redundancy for people searching for specific combos within their deck. But of course it would remove the 'in X decks' information, as it is not useful anymore.
I saw this done for a dimir aristocrats deck on reddit and it was very nice to see the combo potential.
Favourite combos? Got to be infinite zombies in sidisi brood tyrant, using narcomeba, altar of dementia and Mortuary. Same results can be got with gitrog monster, noose constrictor dakmor salvage and any of the shuffle titans in your deck... Drop a concordant crossroads and you just win!
Found thanks to you some more Combos for Siona Captain of the Pyleas... Infinite Damage Infinite Tokens Creation Infinite Mana now i really got something XD
Yes this is an awesome video!
Isochron scepter, imprint dramatic reversal. Copy artifact, copy scepter, imprint silence. Cast silence during each opponents upkeep
Only a 4 card combo that also costs 150 dollars nbd
I don't combo with it, but I use Sliver Queen as the Commander for my planeswalker deck because she's WUBRG and makes hero blockers.
As a proud owner of a Ghave deck, I can assure you there are over 50 different combos you can do in the deck, some of which don’t even need Ghave in play :P
My HS band had a low hoop out the back of our practice space. We would play 1 vs. 1 vs. 1 with goal tending. It was epic, and you haven't truly played basketball until you've played it full contact on a lowered hoop with goal tending. #fightme
Great video guy's
Using the site, I find it funny that the combo with Llanowar Scout + Retreat to Coralhelm + Tatyova, Benthic Druid have lands that arent supported with tatyova as the commander
I wish combos were limited to once per trip around the table (10x on turn 10)
I’m not a fan of Combo/Control decks personally. I enjoy when I can include some of those elements into an Aggro deck as long as it fits how I want to play a certain deck, or if fits the overall theme/strategy of a deck. I’m more of an Aggro player personally but will dip into Midrange if I really love the Commander. My favorite Commander deck (Narset, Enlightened Exile) could technically be considered a Midrange deck because it uses some Control/Infinite combos to open up my opponents so they can’t defend against my attacks, pump up my best attackers, and/or have a backup win con or two available when full Aggro isn’t enough in a particular situation. I however don’t like Tutors very much and will never include more than one, and only include one if it actually supports the theme of the deck like a Faerie Harbinger in a Faerie deck. I love the single card limit to the format because of the diversity it can have from one game to another. I hate when a Commander deck feels too repetitive just doing the same thing over and over with little to no variation (that’s one reason why I don’t like CEDH, it’s too consistent and too fast of me).
What is everyone's thoughts on this? I'm pretty new to commander, just built my first Feather deck and probably building another one soon that's less voltron and more creatures synergy. My impression is that a large portion of the Commander Deck builds are seeking for the infinite combo that wins the game straight up, or the trick card that prevents it from happening to others. is that an accurate assessment?
There are many different types of commander decks but some play groups prefer some strategies over others. It depends on who you play with!
I don't play with combos and if I was in a heavy combo meta I wouldn't be playing in that meta any longer. That said, that's me and just my taste. I don't like combos, country music recorded after 1977, or onions on pizza. If someone does like combo, modern country and extra onions that's none of my business what they enjoy.
No sure if we can quantify whether or not a large portion of the commander decks look for the infinite or not, statistically speaking. In my experience playing at a handful of shops and at events at GP's and MagicFests, I don't see much dedicated combo. Maybe a game gets won by one 1 in 8 games or so? As with the person taste thing above however, that's just my experience and may not reflect the standard.
Generally speaking if a deck is trying to assemble a combo as fast as possible it is a cEDH deck and will identify as such. Lower power decks may contain combos, but tend to draw into them more naturally and have other win conditions as well.
It really depends on your playgroup tbh. Some people like winning through combos while other prefer slugging it out with turning things right. Both playstyles are fine, just talk to your group about what you like. If you find for example that feather gets outpaced you might want to talk about that (also run protection feather can beat the cr*p out of slower combo decks)
@@danaroach29 what!!!!!!1!! No onions in pizza. I am mad and i will write angry comments about this in the internet
hey if foils deal more damage/generate more mana, what about things like Kenrith, the Returned King that is a Buy-a-Box so it's easier to get foil rather then a non-foil that only comes in collector boosters?
Let's not forget when you put a Mana Drain on Isochron or even a foil Mana Drain to get that extra .25 mana
Zirda and Basalt Monolith works just as well, if not better than Rings and Basalt Monolith
Was shocked to not see demonic consultation/thoracle
So true about combo. If it's clever or interesting it's ok. Usually it's not. Also it depends on when the combo happens. Remember that you don't have to go infinite. My group has a "ten repetition" rule. You can cycle the combo ten times. Usually that's still enough.
As a Tatyova player I can confirm she is absolutely made for comboing off with! Being able to draw twice off fetchlands etc is massive value but ever since Mystic Sanctuary got printed last year the combos off of it has put her on the fringes of a tier 2 cEDH commander in my view. Although Retreat to Coralhelm combo decks are most popular they are definitely not the best way to build her.
I tried to click on Ghave, Guru of Spores and my compute blue screened with an overflow error.
Deadeye Navigator is my favorite card!
I'd like to challenge the stats of cards like majestic myriarch in Kathril aspect warper decks. They do the same thing as kathril, but dont give her any ability counters to play with unless other cards have abilities...in which case majestic myriarch is just a beater
i have a ghave deck and mid game i found 2 diferant combos that i hadent put in to the deck intentionally.
Looks like the link is broken, when i go to edhrec.com/combos, it only show Grismold, the Dreadsower :(
Hope it get fixed, I would love to see all the combos and get in the spiration :D
Thanks for the heads up. We'll let the beebles know to fix it
Kiki jiki + intruder alarm and any other non legendary creature does the same thing. Sure that's 3 cards not 2 but ANY CREATURE. Grey merchants, perigrin drake, you name it.
Would be lovely to see top combo commanders and top combos section on edhrec.com/combos, currently i can only find sorting by colors :/
Still my favorite thing edhrec does is the commander pre con upgrade!
Interesting point to mana maze, kinda sorta makes your blue spells uncounterable
I enjoy just snapping my fingers and, if there's no counterspells, winning XD.
Turn 6 or later, go ahead and go infinite and win. Prior to that things get salty. Even if people combo off early game, I shuffle up and start another game and ask the combo player to try a different deck.
Matt is adapting to Joey’s “oh that’s mean” meta
I also like to throw 1 combo into my decks to "oops into" but it's very rare that I draw into them and don't feel like a bully. It's cool to be able to show off the strongest possible thing your deck could do, but it definitely feels like a cheap shot
Matt, I run a Ghostly Prison in my Mirri deck because it’s Pillowfort/Duelchantress (enchantress Voltron) and it helps to protect you, when you couldn’t protect your Mirri.
I run sphere of safety too, but I’ll give Glare a shot!
Rings copies the untap not the mana ability
When Joey does the whole "I drew my whole deck; how ever can I win?" it reminded me of that episode of Avatar when Toph scams all those games of chance and makes out with tons of loot. #aanggan #watertribe #twinkletoes #tophyourule
Lol. I used drake/navigator like few weeks ago. :D
I added a combo to their list :) Syr Konrad with Morality Shift and Kozilek/Ulamog for a T2 win ;}
I really recommend the Mana Maze card.
Ohh i got one flavor combo win for Grouphug: Eon Frolicker + flickercombo like Ghostly Flicker and Naru Meha, Master Wizard + teferis protection (last one you need to dont die on loose life effects)
Its one way you give other players lets say 1000 turns each and you face out so they cant interact with you. mostly they scoop even if they can recure all cards over and over again cause they dont want to wait 700-800 turns till they can win against you^^.
btw. most grouphug decks have no flavor win, they mostly end on stealing your stuff or going chaos (so not really grouphug...)
*Sees Ghave. Sees Cathar's Crusade. Sees Ashnod's Altar.*
Wait... why not Corpsejack Menace? I mean, it's not infinite mana, but it does give infinite counters!
Matt repping the best football team 👍👍
as a customer request I would love to see kamigawa, newcapenna, jumpstart, commander legends, theros beyond death top 50 mono blue cards.
Just saying I love running isochron scepter imprinting mana drain with paradox engine on the field who dosnt love a counter on a stick that give you mana when anyone plays anything
you guys didnt cover walking balista heliod sun crowned.... idk if anyones played with there playgroups through covid but in ever yone of my playgroups atleast someone is running it
