WOW!! Real life, Beech 18 memories, back in the 70s I got 80+ night hours flying shotgun with my friend/instructor/mail pilot, ACV to SFO. Bought this to honor the memory of "Pete, the Pissed Off Postal Pilot". Many hours of "flying talk" spent at Butler Aviation/SFO waiting for return run. Pilot's lounge always had TV set to Channel 36, waiting for Carol Doda to do the "The perfect 36 in San Jose" commercials. LOL, old Beech 18, good memories.
Love vintage twin engine aircraft! Purchased this yesterday morning and have been flying it for 2 days straight now and absolutely love it! Carenado rocks! Thanks for the great video! As usual...
Ah, lovely video! I am one of those casual sim pilots who do not need failures and maintenance features, I just want to enjoy my precious flying time. This Beech 18 looks wonderful, love the cockpit, so I will follow your command and head over to the MSFS marketplace :)
Agreed, I like the Boeing 247 and Ju-52 but the Beech is a much more practical "daily driver" with its higher speed and modern IFR capabilities.
My uncle had a tricycle gear model and used mainly for skydiving, so many memories. Amazing plane.
The last 24 hours have been quite the roller-coaster, from the utter low of the Dash-8 to the absolute high of the Beech 18. Thanks for the ride!

Very nice first look review! I've always like the Beech 18 in FS9 and FSX back in the day, and now here is a Caranado version for MSFS. And at a reasonable price, too! I'm off to buy this plane right now. Thanks for this great review!

This one looks fantastic! I was going to postpone getting it, but after seeing that cabin I think I'll go for it now. Some models have an ambiance about them that you could almost smell the actual plane, and this looks like one of them.

I haven't had a chance to test out icing effects yet, but I did get to test it out in the rain a little bit. Of course the infamous rain preset didn't actually make it rainy while I was in flight it did catch up to me after landing. As expected there are rain effects on the windows and there's even a nice ambient sound effect to sell that your in a metal box.
One other nice bit of candy is that the individual passenger reading lights can be turned on and off.
The restroom in the aft does have a door, but it doesn't open and the room isn't modeled - however they did model the window boxes so you could - if so inclined setup a camera looking out the restroom windows. :p
So good to see you happy with this one after that last debacle. No dumping it in the water next to the runway this time. Hehehe...
When you looped and rolled that BE-18 it brought back memories of watching Bobby Younkin perform aerobatics in one. If you want to know more about the Younkins look up 'Artistry in Air' on TH-cam.
Suppose he's related to Matt Younkin who still performs in a Beech 18? Saw him just last weekend at an airshow.
Bobby is Matt's father :) And yeah The Younkin routines inspired that little bit of fun :D
@@AvAngel I thought that was going to be the answer. Great timing on the release, I'd been thinking how great it would be to get one for the sim; the jet routines at the show were also impressive, but I'm a sucker for radial engines.
For me it's the best plane of MSFS, when you use Denarq add-on.
Thank you for putting in the work! I saw the last review and thought I would wait in hopes for your review before I bought this aircraft - as always your reviews are a decisive force in my purchasing decisions. Carenado is really bringing it with there recent builds.
This airplane was also featured in one of my favorite movies, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World!
The main reason I got this plane is because it features in one of my favorite movies, "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World". Luckily the plane in sim is a joy to fly, this and the Islander are my favorite add ons for MSFS.

The Beech D18 has been one of my favourites for a long time, and I’ve seen several good versjon of it for flight simulators, a very impressive and versatile aircraft with good performance. I have never got the pleasure to fly the real one, but I have had many nice flights in flight simulators with this special aircraft.

So amazing, especially for the price! Classic but still perfectly usable today for both VFR and IFR, probably the most comfortable and inviting cabin I've seen, and as taildraggers go it's one of the easier ones to handle. I will definitely have some fun with this, and I know you will too, I can't wait to see you do some more "grocery" runs! :)
I was waiting for you to review this before buying it AVAngel I’m glad you like it. For me it’s a refreshing change to have a reviewer who isn’t relentlessly negative about everything. You clearly understand what’s involved in making these products and give clear and honest reviews of them without dumping all over someone’s efforts and that’s why I watch your channel.
That is something a lot of people don't get... I'm not going to trash things, and I try to be constructive... even with the bad, it might be a cash grab, OR it might be a developers best they've ever done and are proud... I try to be fair, but truthful... it seems often fromthe comments that diplomacy is a lost art... people think not being rude is shilling for developers, it's not.

On the topic of local legends, I highly recommend giving the previous one, the Savoia-Marchetti S.55, a go. It really is a labor of love, a really cool and legendary vintage plane, and since you enjoy taking off from the sea, I'm pretty sure you'd like it. :)

Late to this, but I LOVE this aircraft
I was SCREAMING at the wiper switch when you skipped it, running through the different other switches. But then you returned to it later, and showed us how beautifully them wipers function. Then I was happy again. I love wipers, okay? Sue me!

Also, the individual reading lights above every seats can also turn on, there is a small switch above the lights.

I watched another review of this earlier and have been a bit on the fence about it, as it seems to be standard piston engine logic in a radial shaped box, so to speak. While I'd like deeper radial engine simulation, I have to admit that it's cheap though, so you can't have everything.
The PMDG DC-6 and Wing42's B247D really set the standard. Without having to maintain proper T&Ps it makes it harder to enjoy flying radials in MSFS now.

Looks good, loving these past few local legends and famous flyers. The Junkers still feels light though and still waiting for the Fokker update.
Always refreshing watching your videos. Thank you. Nice review for a classic local legend aircraft. Hmmm would have loved a bit more functionality in the cockpit, a bit more study level. The sound package is good, but it sounds like a default piston package rather than an actual Beech 18, just my opinion. The textures are nice, down to rivet level. Liveries are good. Handling is ok. Definitely a lot of vintage feeling. Flight model seems a bit too smooth perhaps. All in all definitely a good buy and worthy of adding to my collection of a really nice vintage aircraft. I love analogue controls and dials, clicky, clunky buttons, squeaky things, and steampunk cockpits !! Lol. Well done Asobo, Carenado.
With respect to exclusion of things like the tablet, it's probably due to the fact that the local legends are available of XBox as well as PC.
If my understanding is correct, dynamic features like this generally depend on WASM - and this is not currently available on the xbox version of FS - expected in SU0 in August.
I was happy to see that iniBuilds have stated that the A310 in the 40th Anniversary update is going to have Electronic Flight Bag functionality - and I suspect that a number of the aircraft due in the update will have features which will be dependant on the WASM functionality which will be introduced (for xbox) in August.
Definitely good news for those of us who are on console - it does seem the gap between what is possible on pc and what is possible on console is getting smaller :)
I suspect that any local legends released after SU10 may also not need to be cut down as much in order to be useable on console as well as PC.
That's likely it yes :) hopefully patches bring that stuff in after then and It will be perfect :D

Love the model and I fly it a lot. I wish that there was a variant without the GPS. Maybe just a hole there with an ashtray or something. I like flying old school because gps makes it too easy.

I'm glad you enjoyed flying it, At least Carenado are more trusting then those scam devs! Yes they are slow at updating and the sound bug is annoying but they do bring in some very good aircraft for the sim.
got burned by Canrenado Skymaster and Senneca but this seems like something I would fly just like Milton's version.

Great video! Such a shame that Carenado made an 'arcade' version of this beautiful aircraft.. With a bit more time and effort (weight and sound fx, roar of the engines at startup), this could have been quite magical!
Its not that arcade tbh. The flight feeling is decent, sure its not got full depth, but carenado don't ever do that... they've always been skin deep. The engine roar is low for this video because my engine sounds are turned down, all mine are so people can hear me :D MSFS makes them so damn loud.

Thanks for the fun review! As you mentioned there were so many versions of this aircraft over the years; do you think going forward Carenado will add to this entry with other types (a tricycle or floats version, for instance)?
I don't know tbh, not them I suspect, they either include versions on launch like the bush 185, or don't... :(
@@AvAngel Hopefully someone might take that on. My Indiana unit of the Commemorative Air Force has one of the C-45 Expediter variant used in so many ways in WWII and beyond (actually, I believe the CAF owns six or seven 45s now, which would make it our most restored aircraft). I’ve always found it arguably the best looking plane in our hangar.

A very nice plane. Thank you for the Video AvAngel. Sadly with this plane too, there is this mega sound bug in Multiplayer with the Carenado Planes. So this is a none buy for me, until Carenado and MS is fixing this.
Cool video and cool plane 🙂, God im so impressionable and had to buy this after watching your video . I wasn't so brave on my first flight and certainly didn't do aerobatics or one engine landing but it is nice to fly and i didn't crash so all good . Well worth the money and well worth buying i agree .

Engines sound a touch quiet but what do I know, you have sold me on it anyway.
Carenado or PMDG should work along with Manfred Jahn/Jan Visser and produce an amazing DC-3.
I would really pay for it.
Manfred is retired from flightsim development, I'm sorry to say. There's some chance we'll eventually see a PMDG DC-3 since Robert Randazzo owns one. Doubt they'd collaborate with Carenado and I'm not sure why they'd want to - if they come up with anything at all like their DC-6, that'll be fine.
In the meantime, it seems that the Aeroplane Heaven DC-3, which was OK in FSX/P3D, will be part of the MSFS 40th Anniversary edition in November at no cost, so that's something.
We're getting Aeroplane Heaven, but I'm worried about that one... It wasn't great in fsx... not terrible but eh I didn't like it.

Good job. I don't think it's right to say that "people want you to be negative about things". I don't think anyone would expect you to be negative about this great little, low cost, good quality addon. It's not about "general negativeness" - noone wants that! It's about you saying it like it is more, when something is quite obviously and objectively bad. Eg. That staggeringly awful Dash 8.... he's charging money for it, so it is perfectly acceptable to say that it is dire, in quality performance in the sim, and in effort level.

I quite like this plane it modelling is spectacular, but damned if I can land/take off with it properly. Between being a tail dragger, and the issue I have with planes just wanting to veer off to the side for quite literally no reason on take off/landing requiring me to often use near full rudder/wheel lock to keep straight said take off and landings are often… an experience.
I can tell I'm too hung up on the DC-3 because the Beachcraft 18 doesn't look right with 2 blade props to me.

Love it how they release these aircraft with no documentation whatsoever. Just waiting for the A310 release and MS will be all like 'nah fck em, they can figure out to fly an Airbus A310 by trial and error" lol. Shame it is a Carenado release - have been in flight simming a long time, long enough to know whenever I see 'Carenado' it will be a hard pass - pretty model with no systems depth or functionality, or realistic flight dynamics at all.
Flight dynamics feel identical to the shupe D18s for fs9 and fsx which was well regarded as accurate to be fair.
@@AvAngel Rgr that - well reading the MSFS forum on the aircraft and it seems I am not alone and my suspicions are confirmed. Janky systems operation and a wooden 'flight model'. But is what everyone expects from Carenado now - but hey it does look nice, not gonna lie - shame a reputable dev didn't make it, could have been amazing :(

I mean I am fine paying that for a nice looking a/c - but end of the day for the limited flight simming time I have, I would rather fly a 'good' aircraft if you get me, not just some pretty toy-plane, but hey it may be fun for some people.
How do I assign the cowl flaps in sim peripheral which I do have one? What I should use, so many options to pick from?
Not entirely sure, i always click and drag in the vc myself.
Through the "controls" menu ;) I assigned them to the rocker on my throttle.

So I bought the aircraft as you make a must have. Thanks for that. I am looking for the pilot handbook but cant locate. I dont even see the aircraft in the developers mode. Anyone have any suggestions?

it's not asobo it's just carenado microsoft
Asobo develop MSFS... for Microsoft. These Local Legends aircraft are partnerships between Asobo AND the developer... so in this case it is. (like the other local legends)
