The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This is the high point of a difficult career. As a youth she wanted to be a concert pianist, but racial barriers excluded her from that career. Going pop/jazz was a come down, in those days, for a classical artist, but she had the chops to rise to the occasion, even though life's twists and turns later brought her down. But here we see true perfection. Perfect delivery in the jazz/pop idiom, but also this was a point in her career when she was still willing to call on the tremendous power of her classic training. The result is something truly unique, a high point in the history of music. Though not often recognized, the power of this performance is matched by true brilliance of composition and execution on the piano. Two of the great songs of early 20th century music brought to a pinnacle of commanding execution. Simply amazing. I wonder that Sullivan's audience could grasp what they had just seen.

Oh wow... That is so interesting 🤔 to hear about. I never knew this about Nina. Thank you for sharing, I was just thinking that back in this time there were a lot of racial barriers. I was so impressed from the first time I heard her voice she is absolutely mesmerizing and her piano skills are incredible. It breaks my heart to hear that there were racial barriers back then preventing her from going in the direction she truly wanted. But I'm glad that she made the songs that she did, I think her music today continues to touch and influence people, including me. ❤

@BJ Wanlund Like Malcolm X, her neighbor in Mount Vernon, New York, she supported black nationalism and advocated violent revolution rather than Martin Luther King Jr.'s non-violent approach. She hoped that African Americans could use armed combat to form a separate state,

@@bubbaschwartz Unfortunately her talent was overshadowed by her violent tendencies, particularly later in her life.

The Jim Crow laws in the south would of made me a violent radical also. she had to fight her way thru racism all the way.

She sings it all however when she slides into the "Jazz Vocalist" type of vibe my soul gets all melty. It has a comforting effect that I actually turn to during times of struggle. I would encourage all who don't know to take a dive into her work. So many styles & genres. No matter what style though, you know who's voice that is when you hear it. Ms. Simone is inspiring to say the least. I think she is enigmatic......really one of a kind. I could listen all day.....when I made mix tapes/ cds I would often put her 1st hit, her version of "......Porgy" by Gershwin somewheren on that thing. Amazing woman. I love the tile being spelled hownit's said too! I "LOVES" you!
