    One of the best of all your videos I've seen so far. Definitely great to see good, trustworthy, pragmatic advice on one of the more technical jobs on these older (indestructible) Mercedes. (Especially the 6cyl)

    I adjusted the valves on my w123 it has the first series engine. I adjusted them because I could hear a cam follower making a noise just like an excessive valve clearance would. All the clearances were almost too small to measure. Once I adjusted them as per my manual, the engine ran very smoothly but still has the cam follower noise. I will run it for a short while to see exactly what is happening. I’ve only just got this car and will keep it for a long while. I will post my findings.

    I had the valves adjusted on my 1985 300d periodically because I knew they were solid lifters. I did not know the gas motors had solid lifters and needed adjusting.

    • @thisisnightshop2037

      To make sure the rocker is seated. This does affect the clearance .

    I’m disappointed that your video man edited out the times that you conked your head on the inside of the grill during this task. MB removed all the fun when they changed the hinge design to allow the hood to be opened to the vertical position. If I had a dollar for every time I hit my head this way....

    Excellent video. What's your opinion of the condition of that camshaft? I see what may be pitting and corrosion but it could also be harmless staining. Most of it is on the side of the lobes where they do not contact the rocker so even in the case of corrosion, I would guess that this is not really an issue. It does suggest that this engine sat for extended periods without use.
    A possible subject for a future videos might be "the waking of an engine after an extended sleep", centered mostly on how to do it without damaging anything. Cleaning out the fuel system would require its own video.
    All of the above concern me because I'm currently looking at a 250SE that has been sitting for several years. The body has very nearly zero rust but there is nevertheless a minor haze of rust on the back sides of the cam lobes.

    I wish the OM61x diesels used that type of adjuster but I’m sure there’s an engineering reason why they use the lock nut setup instead. If I had to guess it’s because of the vibration.

    • @thisisnightshop2037
      @thisisnightshop2037 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The diesel adjuster is better

      Do the old 6 cylinder gassers not hold the adjustment well?

    • @thisisnightshop2037
      @thisisnightshop2037 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The adjuster usually requires a lot of force to move if it has been sitting for years

  • @adelkheir

    Hey pierre, does this also applies to m115 4 cylinder engines? And can adjusting the valves alter the level of compression since I have one cylinder on 120 psi compared to 140-145 psi on the other three ?

    • @richardlazarski4553
      @richardlazarski4553 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My understanding is that valve adjustment can effect compression. If the valves are adjusted too tight, they could be slightly open which would make compression lower on that cylinder.

    • @thisisnightshop2037
      @thisisnightshop2037 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it does and it will affect compression

    Pierre, I was doing valves on my m117 with the Mercedes crow foot tool, but some valves didn't want to move (started to round the bolt slightly so I stopped) any tips short of taking the camshaft off?
