- Let's do a high level run through of the current crop of cordless rear handle saws. Can you believe we are in the age of actually framing without running cords to our saws? I'll time stamp each saw below. I am a huge believer that blade left rear handle saws are perfect for framing.

48 years ago when I started framing, don’t shoot me, when I got out of college, I was told this. Worm drive saws were first developed to cut rafter tails. It just so happened that it excelled at all other cuts. Oh and cords, funny thing about technology. We never thought once about the inconvenience of it all. We just knew it beat sawing by hand. We also hand banged all our nails, although pneumatic guns were just starting to come out, and weighed a ton. Never knew anything other than a tool with a cord or hose hanging out the back. Soon kids won’t know anything but electric cars that don’t stink. If life is about anything, it’s about change.
Jon, I started 47 years ago. I'm in Maine so we use sidewinders. The saw most guys had was a Rockwell 314 I think it was. The handle was pretty much on top, and the shoe didn't tilt, the saw body came straight up from the shoe. The old guys I worked with still used hand saws and hand planes a lot too. It wasn't until sometime in the 80s we started using nail guns for framing and nailing done underlayment. All finish nails were driven with a hammer.
At this point in my career, there is no way I am buying a bunch of really cool tools as I can barely walk now.

Started framing in 93 Started with the MIKITA sidewinder 2years later ran a skil, ridged , Dewalt. All corded than bought the Dewalt cordless rearhandle it's the best saw I have ever used. In 30 years it is amazing how much has changed
Electronic cars are terrible
Not biased at all 🤔. Dewalt is a beast. And as a contractor, I want just one battery platform, so it's really Dewalt or Milwaukee as the only option. Dewalt for me.
U might want to put the Metabo HPT Recip vs the Flex as well as there SDS Max rotary and full size router, portable band saw, Grinder
Oops forgot Flex doesn't offer an SDS Max or portable band saw
The others will outperform the Flexy' and have been out for 3 or 4 yrs plus true lifetime warranty and all can be plugged into AC adapter
Also I have two co workers that have burned up the Flex Hammer drill motor overusing the "turbo" function
Time will also tell on longevity-and the early reviews on that haven't been good so far
Then came FLEX…but yes, DeWalt was/is best for carpentry. Milwaukee is right there, even better for automotive. But FLEX will be king eventually….considering they don’t go broke giving lifetime warranties.
This guy is focused on weight and it’s pathetic. He…with his Bluetooth ear piece, ignores quality, performance, and functionality.
He’s a clown capable of making decent cuts. Stick with DeWalt until FLEX builds their lineup or Milwaukee takes a HUGE step forward. Makita may make another leap, too.
@@fZionists78Dewalt makes amazing saws and carpentry tools. Milwaukee is VERY geared towards Electricians, plumbers and HVAC. I know this because as a plumber, every single supply house carries Milwaukee. Many exclusively carry Milwaukee.

I like this guy. He's definitely been doing this a long time as you can tell from his dialogue. Understands framers. Also understands framers with some gray hair... With all the TH-camrs out there using clickbait titles and hardcore music and yelling at your face, this guy was refreshing.
I just ordered a Metabo yesterday to switch from my Milwaukee blade right sidewinder!
@Spirit Life It's kind of a different animal. If you're used to one, it takes a bit of adjusting to the other. Rear handles are a lot smoother imo. Probably because of the angle you're pushing it, but it's gonna spray sawdust on your pants/waste/tool pouches whenever you cut with it if you're holding it right handed.
I'm a former Hitachi and now Metabo HPT fan, so I'm thrilled to see they did such a great job developing this saw. IMO their platform is still highly underrated in the US but I hope they'll soon catch on and start to bring more awesome products from the Multivolt platform which are already sold in Japan and other countries.

I just switched to the Metabo HPT platform from Dewalt XR.. I wish I would have switched sooner before I burnt up $500 worth of Dewalt batteries.. The 36v Metabo tools are all absolute beasts, and the fact that you can use the 36v batteries in the 18v tools and double the amp hour rating of the battery is what sold me on Metabo.. So far, I'm extremely happy with my decision.. So much so that I'm getting ready to swap out my corded Dewalt miter saws for cordless Metabo miter saws..
First of all let me say, what a humble, down to earth, and honest person you seem to be. The same goes for the review. Biased doesn’t even cross my mind in this video. I already have the Milwaukee rear handle but I’m in the market for a 10-1/4 cordless. As of right now those are the only 2 options. I definitely value your opinion and honesty so my decision is easily made. I’ve literally watched over 50 reviews on both the MAKITA and Skilsaw, but when I came across this video, ( Amazing brother ) Absolutely amazing review. Keeping thing’s simple is a rare trait nowadays. A lot of channels sit and nit pick on the slightest little things and do more complaining than complimenting. @@PFab idk P. I keep changing my mind man. Now I’m thinking about the flex rear handle. That all might change though. So many good ones out there. The time I made this comment I almost ordered the MAKITA Xgt 10-1/4🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️. But then I told myself, I don’t even need a saw that big and too expensive. The tool addiction struggle is real my friend 🤣. Since I picked up both Flexvolt saws I haven’t used my Milwaukee in a good month.
I was a little worried about installing the blade after reading a couple of reviews. But it was amazingly easy. Took about 1 minute. Works great th-cam.com/users/postUgkxjpBI8OOeUXib_iT7UomCrQ-uauwZJ62c . Cuts easily and is perfect for pocket cuts I needed to make for replacing some old deck boards.
Donated my craftsman corded to a 2nd home. Made purchasing the metabo painless!!! Glad to see you agree with my choice.
Great video, well done and very interesting. I'm a 66 year old carpenter from the east; I used Super Sawcats and then the DeWalt equivalent all through my career. I had the Skil HD77 for a while many years ago - I remember there was nothing better in wet, heavy lumber, but I never liked the balance as much as one of the Black and Decker sidewinders. And heavy - you really did need to eat your Wheaties in the morning. To each his own. I would have liked to see you test a corded 77 up against this bunch, but that's just me; I'm old school. I never knew anything except corded . . . but in framing I can certainly see the advantage of cordless, acknowledging that there is a tradeoff with power. And one other thing; the lifespan of the tool. I'm guessing a corded 77 might survive 6 times as long as these cordless? How long do your saws last? And finally, you're absolutely correct about pacing your body so that you don't wear it out prematurely. Watch that you don't injure your back, sleep well and try to retire with all your fingers. My best.
If u still want corded the Metabo HPT can use AC adapter for use far into the future and if your batteries can't keep up

In the US Lowes carries replacement brushes. Only takes a few minutes to swap them out

I'm mainly a DeWalt guy, so I went with their 60v. It's an absolute beast, but it is a hefty fella.
I currently own 3 of out of all those saws you have on this video, M18, Makita 36v, and the Metabo HPT. Personally....I like the Metabo HPT and I would buy 3 of them as well. The price is also hard to beat at 199 and funny enough Milwaukee is also selling theirs for 199 at the moment, so pick what you want.

I love my 40v xgt rear handle. I’m on Makita Milwaukee Dewalt and metabo hpt platforms which some say is dumb but I don’t bc each company makes good tools. Once the metabo hpt is available to buy from lowes I will order one and it will be strictly the saw I use all day the xgt will stay at the horses for any cuts on the ground. Great review.
I don't mind having 2 or 3 color batteries on job site as each of my red green and blue tools work better for different applications
In the last few years I have been buying more Metabo HPT due to the features, warranty, feel and the AC adapter option for my higher run time tools such as table saw, mitre saw, SDS Max rotary, grinder, vacuum and a few others especially the soon to be released cordless compressor with better specs than my Milwaukee and Dewalt
I ordered mine last week and can't wait for the Hitachi to show up at my door. 8.2 lb is crazy. You should do a video on California Carpenter saw techniques. There is very little out there and that's what scares and sets the East coasters apart they don't understand the saw

I started out framing in the late 80's near Chicago with a worm drive, never heard it was more of a W Coast thing. The guy that taught me was from the south too.

I just got the new skil dual 20v/40 volt rear handle and I’ve gotta say I’m very impressed! I’m a Milwaukee guy but it was only 207 from Ohio power tool! Comes with a dual fan cooled charger 2 5mah batteries & blade! Has a big led light! The dust port goes through the handle!
I’ve cut an 80”x42”x3” blk walnut table, a 22”x37”x3” blk walnut & epoxy top plus 10’ of base board at 45 and still have 2 bars on both batteries 🔋
$199 on Tool Barn ,free battery and charger...Really like my Metabo rear handle cordless saw, because it's so light. I had the DeWalt which was about a month old but it was too heavy having a torn rotor cuff so I sold it to my roofer .I bought it from the tool barn couple of weeks ago when they first came out.

👍 way up! You're so right with the weight and longevity statement. I just turned 39 today and I look for both air and power tools that are lightweight. When you're making hundreds of cuts throughout a day falling in love with a heavier tool can take years off your career...seeing guys framing with the grey skil wormdrive today blows my mind. I appreciate the vid.

I had a Hitachi blade right corded circular saw, when it started to act more like an arc light than a saw, I replaced it with the rear handle 36v makita. I got lucky, because it was pretty new on the market, at least the metric version.
And accept for the weight, I love it.
Glad to see a guy who reviews and informs others without projecting annoying remarks like many narcissists out there. I appreciate your demo and review. I was given a nice Metabo miter saw, and now looking at other Metabo tools. it looks like the Matabo brand is good and still "affordable". The prices of Dewalt and Milwaukee tools are becoming ridiculous for homeowners. They don't do much to attract new users. Loyal users also have alternative options now!

I was always of the opinion that skill being the only true worm drive on the table was the best but now I don't know
We are out of ky and have always used a sidewinder saw until about a year ago when we purchased the Milwaukee rear handled saw. We have since then purchased a couple more. We still run both styles and find that we prefer the rear handled for everything except cutting bevels. We find that the visibility is much better on the sidewinder when cutting bevels. Don’t think we will ever just go to one saw over the other I love having both options.
Great review Tim!! I learned alot, I have a Porter Cable 7 1/4" corded that i absolutely love!! Not a framer just a guy who likes to build stuff. Always shyed away from the left hand blade, after watching your video now I understand much better the concept and now I really want to go buy one LOL!!!
Exceptional video. I half expected you to choose the 36v makita but awesome to hear you’d choose the metabo. In Nz it’s Hikoki, looking forward to it landing here. Since owning a rear handle saw it’s the only saw I wish to use. We are predominantly side winders in this country which have their place seeing as we don’t do the kind of work you’re used too. Wow!! Metabo HPT for the win. Didn’t see it coming but I’m not too suprised as I love my Triple Hammer over every other impact driver I own. Metabo just know how to provide tools with great ergonomics and a great feel. Like the triple hammer just feels good in the hands and feels smooth to use. Great video!!

I have the same problem you do! I have all those 7-1/4” saws. The metabo is on the way and so is the new skil 20v x 2. What I love about all these saws is that every company did something different in the design/battery placement and battery type. All unique in their own way.

Thanks for this video! I am a retired dentist with zero experience using a power saw. Your explanation of what to consider when buying and using this tool is very helpful. I have an abundance of Makita 18v batteries for my lawnmower, so I am interested in the older Makita 36v XSR01. Since I am not in the trades, I don't need the latest and the greatest. Buying an older model that was once considered the best is good enough for me. Thanks for your help!!

Hi Tim! Another great video review. I just purchased the Makita 10 1/4 saw. It has changed my life for the better! We cut a lot of 6x6 posts and now we make two cuts instead of 4 and finish with the sawzall. Anyways, love your videos. Keep up the good work!
I truly appreciate your thorough review. These days it’s very hard to be in just one platform. For my 12V/small tools I’m pure Milwaukee. For 18V I’m mostly dewalt and I like the power of their flex volt models. Cordless dual compound miter saw? Yes please. I do have Milwaukee’s full line up of nailers, but use a battery adapter to use dewalt batteries, except the 23 gauge pin nailer which is 12V and I have 12V Milwaukee batteries. I like my Dewalt rear handle but I too use it mostly for ripping and use the flex PLT sidewinder for most things. Do like the rear handle for rafters and bird mouth work etc. since I build as a sideline I can’t afford to be into too many systems.
All my cordless tools are milwaukee fuel except my rear handle, its a makita 36v...great saw!
Awesome video. Please keep them coming. I’ve recently gone metabo everything. The tools are amazing hands down. I’ve very happy with them.
I have both Makita and Metabo kits. The Metabo drills and drivers are far superior to the Makita. Tons more power driving 4" structural screws and the batteries last noticeably longer. I'm a fan of Norm Abrams' philosophy of tools, you can never own too many and you leave them set up for specific tasks. Like you said, leave one set up for the bevels, set up one for square, and the third is wandering around the site. People don't realize how much time is wasted walking over to get a saw, or drill, or driver 15 times a day or changing set up for every other cut. Last, I have the 6.5" for cutting sheaving and other light duty work, it is half the weight and just easier to haul around on ladders or climbing trusses.
Yeah buddy! I have seven circs in regular use, and it ain't because any of them don't work! I have tons of redundant and even identical tools, for a number of different reasons. Fantastic philosophy, one which can seriously pay itself off, in terms of time and energy and profit and whatever else.
I do everything, like electrical one day and airless spraying the next. Very often, it's totally worth spending thousands extra for redundant gear. I curse like a sailor but "downtime" is the dirtiest of words I've heard.

I recently saw a comparison of the newer 3rd gen triple hammer WH36DC and the brand new double spring XGT TD002, and they were also fairly identical
Bought the hitachi early for cost but they proved themselves to me in many ways. Now i am all green and will add more as they come out.

Thanks for the video and am really surprised that metabo was number one pick and I saw the video on another channel and what impressed me is that it didn't had any cut out during all the cuts
A lesser known fact about the Skil is you don't even need the blade to be turning. Just set it on the wood and the weight presses the blade through.
I had a 6 1/2” Dewalt saw that was blade left, it was the cheapest one Dewalt makes, and I preferred it over my bosses 60v Dewalt blade right top handle. I finally upgraded to a Dewalt 60v rear handle(got a great deal on it), and I absolutely love it, the rear handle is definitely more comfortable.
Cool. I just got the 4.5in dewalt 20v saw. Excellent for breaking down sheet goods and light framing work.

Love all your videos Tim, and a great saw review to watch whilst im knocking out dinner. I’m in England so wormdrive saws have only been here for 3 or so years, i think. I’ve got the DeWalt and i love it, even though she’s a heavy beast. I run a lot of cordless Metabo (Hikoki/Hitachi) gear for my impact SDS, planer etc and they’re all pretty good. That being said i’ve had their 3 combi drills (motors burned out after 10 months) and multi tool which all shook itself apart. My point being its a good platform but if i was going to invest again i might go Milwaukee
Good review Tim, I'm a Makita Fan but have been itching to try the metabo. For our purpose I think I'd likely stick to makita and jump to XGT solely for the purpose of the 10-1/4" and the advantages just aren't enough for me to switch platforms. As always thanks for your honesty.
I just recently invested in the metabo hpt platform, including the rear handle saw. I felt that metabo at the time was the best value proposition and their grinders are top notch. My only criticism would be I wish metabo had a wider tool selection like dewalt...
Cordless has been a game changer for me. I’m a rancher and farmer, but build stuff quite a bit. Building my own shop/apartment right now. Where I’m not using the tools everyday it makes a huge difference just to grab a battery and throw it in the pickup or just use it in the shop.

Thanks for the video. Looking to get a larger saw from my 6 1/2 and like the blade on the left. Never used a rear handle saw but might try the Metabo. They make a metal connector nailer I'm looking at as well.
I had just got the Makita 40v rear handle a week ago and still getting used to it but was really impressed on how well it cuts. For me I have to get accustomed to using any saw sightlines since I don't use them often.

Honestly all those saws are good. Ive only used, and seen, the Hilti up in Fort St. John at the dam (completely random that there is a wormdrive style saw on site, wormdrives are not common in British Columbia - but you still see them around). I have the dewalt, I love it. I bought my corded skilsaw 7-1/4 before I realized there was a cordless version, I love that saw! Im not a fan of milwaukee sidewinders, but the wormdrive is okay.

Love my Makita 36v and DeWalt 60V flexvolt the DeWalt has loads and loads and power and for sure more run time than my Makita but I love how smooth the Makita is. Never going back to corded

Couldn't agree more with you on the smoothness of the Makita, it's my favorite.
Makita is way smoother than the milwuakee or dewalt. Gotten use all 3 and own the milwuakee. Its a bit of a pain once you buy into a platform.
I have both the 7 1/4 & 10” Skil & Milwaukee, even though we’re Milwaukee fans and on their battery platform I hate it! We only use it for dock work because I want it to drop into the bay and never to be seen again!
Started framing in Minnesota in 1983. Makita sidewinders. Hand nailing. Moved to LA and production framing. Skil wormdrives with joist hangers and twist-lock three prongs with 100ft 12 or 10 gauge y-cords still hand nailing, back to MN and air staplers and nailers are taking over. Back to the sidewinders, but I didnt like it. Sidewinders still the thing here mostly until i left framing in 1997. But wow. These new saws. I gotta check them. One thing, though. I was still framing until 1997 with the same Skil77 I bought used in Los Angeles in 1984 for $100.... if it wasn't stolen I would be using it today.

East coaster here. Switched to a rear handle makita hypoid a few years ago. Love that saw. Took a while getting used to the weight, but love it. I have recently been using my Metabo 36V cordless sidewinder due to limited power access. I hate it… I ordered a rear handle Metabo cordless the other day. Unfortunately it won’t arrive til mid march :-(
I got two of the Metabo HPT rear handles and now use the sidewinder as a track saw with the Bora system
It works great for that also use another cordless sidewinder with diamond blade for scoring cement
Rear handles will be for framing and ripping

At 56 I think I'll stick with my 20 year old Skil Mag77 with the guard permanently pinned up vs a $400 saw and expensive batteries. We built my home together and all she asks for is a little fresh oil, an occasional new Diablo blade and a new cord every ten years.
Hard to beat a Skil 77 mag.
The batteries pay for themselves fast considering you can go anywhere any time with a battery, on any job. I encourage you to try a powerful cordless then try to justify having a cord
@@CraigularjJoeWoodworks it's called an extension cord. They're pretty popular and been around for decades. Homes have been built with them for a long time and will continue to be for many more. 😉

Great review Tim! I have heard that using a 8.0 battery instead of the 12.0 battery for the Milwaukee is pure gold and takes care of the heavier weight.
All of you west coast guys sound the same:) I would live to use a worm drive, but a sidewinder just fits so well in the hand and iv used it all my life. I'll never change :) love then both
Bought into metabo hpt multi volt completely about 6 months ago. Every till they offer has at least one standout feature. Some are a lil behind the curve with quick release and quick adjust features but whatever their standout feature is for that particular tool makes them awesome. 61/2 saw... Cut through 3x material. Rear handle... Light! 36v recip... Powerful quick cuts. Love em all but especially my rear handle.

Bro… When you use a RH sidewinder you don’t crane your neck to the right, you look at the gap between the motor and the guard. That said, I got the Makita hypoid 3 years ago and it has become my go-to saw. Great video and I hope we get more of this content!
I love the 36 volt makita, really wish they would’ve had the 40 volt system when I first stared investing in their ecosystem.
Nantucket, 1978, an all aluminum skilsaw and an all aluminum rockwell sawzall. Woody even had a crazy big all aluminum skilsaw you could stack about 30 blades in for plowing. I don’t remember anyone ever playing with it… Never understood the sidewinders, and have yet to cut the cord-but great video!
Great video! I have both makita 36v and metabo sidewinder versions, and I have the same opinion. Makita has a bit extra grunt but metabo feels much easier to use, really lightweight. I use the makita for all the repetitive heavy lifting cuts and the metabo for general use. Except for sheathing, I use the makita 36v track saw its so much faster and straighter! I'm wanting to get that 10 1/2 40V makita, but I think there's a 9 1/2 36v that's track compatible so still deciding. I got into Metabo because of the framing nailer but love that platform, so much bang for the buck! Also got their cordless table saw, got tired of waiting for Makita to make one.

I'd still buy the skil..... The weight you will get used to and it's the highest quality of cutting and lasts a long time. Used all of them and Skil is still the best.
My DeWalt cordless right side blade weighs the same with a 2ah (60V). I love that saw soooo much. Perfectly balanced.
I didn’t even know they made 2ah 60Vs. That would def help with weight. Has enough power and run time?

Yeah... this was a total waste of my time, LOL. I know you were like, "OMG!" When you went to edit. Yeah man, great review! I've been recommending more Metabo tools myself. Well-built. Great prices. Most tools have a lifetime warranty including the circular saw you just reviewed. That same saw can also run on battery AND can be plugged in to run on AC. Plus it's entry price is $199.
Toolbarn had a deal last week where if you bought the saw you got the charger and a 46V 4AH battery for free.
Finally, with Metabo 36V batteries, they can be used on their 18V tools. If you use a 4AH battery on an 18V tool, it. doubles the AH's so a 4 becomes an 8 and a 2.5 becomes a 5 all with weight savings. Really can't beat it.
love my right blade 36v makita it just ripes and cuts and does not die. im in upstate new york however i have never tried a rear hand saw and would really love to see how they are. im only 24 been doing it for 5 years and have never seen a rear hand saw user in my area

I love dewalt but sometimes I think about Milwaukee because the amount of tools their platform holds. But dewalts Flexvolt line is still unmatched imo. It’s a beast of a saw and I have close to 2 years of using mine, 0 regrets
Metabo HPT doesn’t have a light or onboard tool storage. The lack of a light really irritates me, tool doesn’t bother me but it’s worth a mention. I have 6 different cordless circular saws and all of them have a light except this one. It’s still my daily framing go-to but man… they dropped the ball on this with the missing LED. Their 6-1/2” deep cut is my only saw without a hook. Can’t be that hard to include both!

I use one of mine as a track saw with Bora tracks-works well
My 7 1/4" worm drive saw became cordless once but it stopped working,now it's got an 18' cord on it(seems to work better that way),it almost became cordless again once or four times..😅
