  • If you've been painting with pastels for long, you probably know about the wonderful pastel paper called, UArt. It's awesome, but so many (including myself) have expressed frustration at how it warps and curls, even with proper storage. I have finally found a great, and easy way to take care of this and flatten out UArt paper like a pancake! Check it out!

Great idea Susan! I used to wash off my failed paintings in my laundry sink and then put books or them, tape them down or roll them backwards but then they kind of rippled. Then I started just letting them stand on end and dry in the sink. They ended up just like you started and that’s all the further I got. Just taped them down completely when they were dry. I will try this technique now! Thanks!!

Just so you know, I have recently been purchasing Fisher Pastel Paper / 400 grit. I get it from proartpanels.com and it is comparative in price to Uart. And… It doesn’t curl at all! Literally, just like UArt paper with no curling! 👏👏😊

I use an iron. Mist water onto the paper, or you could sponge like you showed, then iron it.
I do that with old crinkled dollar bills too. Haha.

If you have a good framer…take your paper into them…they can mount it to foam core or gatorbord. It’s not expensive to have done and it will save you a lot of time.

Hi Susan, I am here because of the exact same reason. I am in London and gosh, UART curls like it is a worm. It is crazy. I am going to try this hack. Has the paper remained even after painting and during storage ? My biggest nightmare is that it will go back to its curly wurly ways after I finish painting.

Ha ha....curling like a "worm". I totally get that. Mostly I have found that my completed paintings stay pretty flat, but it may have to do with how I store them in clear bags with a piece of foam core board for support. Hope that helps! Oh, and I now buy Fisher 400 which is almost exactly like UArt but NO curling at all. I get mine from www.proartpanels.com

Would this work with other sketchbook paper? Been happening with my watercolor.

With other papers I recommend wetting the back with water and then drying. It usually flattens out my watercolor paper. ;)

In the UK they don't put electric sockets in a bathroom because of the risk of electrocution.

Kerry B Well I guess that’s pretty smart, but we have something called GFI outlets that will literally trip the breaker if water is detected. We have them installed in our bathrooms.

Any advice on how to straighten out unsanded pastel paper that is buckled due to using alcohol on it as underpainting? (The painting is done, is not fixed, so im unsure how to go about flattening the buckled areas i
    On it)

I've never tried doing it, but my idea would be to place some glassine paper over the painting, lay a hand towel or something atop that, take a clothes iron (make sure the steam setting is off) and run over the towel. Maybe start off on low heat and increase if that's not working. Like I said, I've never done it, so just an idea. You could always try a small test piece, to be sure it doesn't affect the pastels, maybe? If you don't have glassine paper wax or freezer paper would probably work, too!! Let me know if you try it, please!! I'm curious!!!

@@catrinahampton4706 Thanks- I suppose i could take an old sketch- put some pastel on it, and wet it- buckle the paper, then try what you suggest- Thanks for hte info- I'll give it a try in a week or so-

You could also try to place glassine paper over it and just set something heavy on it for a day or two. Heavy books?

Monet Cafe' with Artist Susan Jenkins I reached out to Uart and unfortunately they said their paper was meant to be mounted before use. The paper is going to curl naturally until mounted. Surprised me.

@@cinnie2543 the solution for me has simply been to mount the paper. Yes, it’s more prep before hand, but it works beautifully. I did confirm this from Uart on several occasions over the years to be sure. Their paper is meant to be mounted before applying pastels
