  • I received the greatest question from a subscriber here the other day.... "How does the Underpainting Color Affect the Final Result?"
    So, I decided to make a tutorial where I do 2 paintings at once with different colored underpaintings. This lesson is REAL TIME and I pray it is full or artistic education and healing. Stay safe artists and be blessed!

    I went to an Art school for 12 years. It is a public school, therefore very limited resources and usually low income students. I had never heard any medical issues related to pastels, or any other medium and we used cheap products most of the time.

    Hi just thought this was a great demo as it applies to all mediums. your video was suggested on my feed and it was fun to watch.

    Susan, I worry a lot about the pastel dust. Some are very specific that they are non toxic. But many are made with actual mineral pigments and heavy metals which one may not be allergic to, but the dust gets in your lungs and may cause cancer. Most come with a stern warning to that effect. Blowing on the pastels should be a no no! I am a geologist by training and fully understand this. Coal miners, quarry operators, and geologists, well know this.

      Wow.... a geologist. How cool. I have never had any issues and personally have never known of any pastel artist who did, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful. This is an article I found very informative on this topic:

    Newby here... are you using double stick tape to hold the paper to the easel?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don't use double stick tape, but typically use artist's tape and I put a piece on the back (with the sticky part facing forward and about half showing length-wise), then I put another piece on the front covering the tape and have half of it taped to the board. Hard to describe but hopefully that made sense. I sometimes share it in my lessons so perhaps you can find one with a demonstration :)

    I painted with pastels over a discarded water color painting I had done. It feels very dark to me. I wonder how I can do that without it being dark.

      Did you add anything to the watercolor paper to make the pastel adhere better? I often do a watercolor painting, then apply CLEAR Liquid Gesso (which has some grit to it), let it dry and then apply pastels. The pastels don't adhere very well to pastel paper without adding some sort of texture. :) I have some videos on this technique. I think I have a playlist on Combining Pastels with Watercolor. :) :) :)

    PROTECT YOURSELF! Blown pastel dust reenters the air and is enhaled. Keep hands clean intermittently. You can use gloves. Blend with other things rather than your hands and fingers. HAPPY HEALTHY PAINTING.
