LOVE THIS VIDEO. When I took many art classes yrs ago at a fairly good college this was never explained. A lot was fgure it out attitude which I did in many instances. This was very straightforward and helpful- TY TY
Thank you! My whole series of 'How To' videos and colour theory playlist is dedicated to al the things I did not learn in art college haha! Glad you found this helpful.
What a lovely hair you possess! Thanks for the vid. I am new to pastel paint and am trying to find my way thru. This helped a lot. Tks and God bless you.
I was thinking that I needed guidance on what colour paper to use next for my pastel work and this video pops up on my timeline!! Thank you so much this was a helpful and simple video.
@@EmmaColbertArt you’re welcome! I just ordered my first Clairefontaine Pastelmat pad and it’s time to experiment with the colors/temperature effects you mentioned 😇😃
marjo-rittareinikainen9740 Me too! I chose a mid tone brown Clairefontaine paper to draw our little chestnut pony on but I don't want to draw a background just a straight portrait and finding advice on paper colour is a little bit like finding hen's teeth !
Thanks for explaining why you choose the colors you do, Emma...I was never sure what to recommend to my students who asked about color pads of paper. Now I understand about the warmth and coolness of the paper affecting the subject of the painting. And recommending Gail's blog was a great idea...it's full of great information. Lastly, David Sweet's prepared board is such a vibrant shade of red...it always sets off his paintings of his girls (or his glamorous ladies.) Good video!
Thank you Carol! It's something a lot of artists do differently so I don't think there's any 'right' choice. But hopefully this helps those who are stuck to make a choice that will work.
That can really vary depending on the lighting, the background etc. But a mid tone is a safe bet for most things. A sand colour is nice for a yellow lab.
There are many pastel papers on the market all with different weight and textures. The more important quality of pastel paper is the surface type. You can get everything from soft feeling velour to sanded surfaces like UART. Thank you for this video. I am working also on Velour and on Pastelmat. Can I ask you where do you buy big sheets of velourpaper? I find only in 50x70 cm and I would like to have these bigger...
Hi Beate, you can see a full video about velour at th-cam.com/video/nqyhf4BNf2s/w-d-xo.html. I also tell you about those big 40" sheets which I get from Dakota Pastels in the US. They do all sorts of supersize papers
Great, concise explanation, I was in a shop looking at paper for 15 minutes and left undecided. wee tips like this are invaluable. Thanks. May I ask , where is your accent from?(Im a Glaswegian, and couldn't pinpoint it.)
Northern Ireland but it's possibly changed a bit with travelling. I probably tone it down a bit for videos so that I'm understandable. Love the Scottish accents :-)
if i need to watch something about pastel i keep on coming back to your channel wow. I didnt know that i need to choose paper color that will fit for my drawing. Can i ask what is the paper color that will fit for portraits especially that is asian color? thanks in advance. Im a new fan here.
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it! You can either choose a colour that is opposite or complementary, or you can choose a tone within the skin tones. Have a look at my tutorial on darker skin tones. The paper colour I used there was helpful when created the tones.
@@EmmaColbertArt thanks so much! oh i have not seen all yout vids yet but Im planning to watch them all! You speak very clear and I love it! God bless!
Hi Kathy, most of the time I use a grid. I like drawing freehand but a grid tends to speed me up a lot. I have no problem tracing a general composition in a large painting on to speed me up also, but it's equally important to me that I can draw it freehand when I have enough time. I have some videos on here about how I use a grid and also how I transfer onto velour when using that.
Now I understand. Finally someone explains.
This is so helpful. I am fascinated by the fact that the effect of the paper is evident even when it's completely covered with pastel.
Finally someone made a video, 🙏.

Ma'am what about close up potraits?
Invaluable 🥰
I wonder if Jackson Art Supplies will get a USA based distributer. They have the best things available
As far as I know they're pretty good at shipping worldwide. Their shipping times are usually reasonable even when I'm ordering from Spain.

I guess you did not mention the brand and GSm of pastel paper.
Check out the descriptions on my videos. Usually I have links to where you can purchase the materials I use.
Do you trace the animals on your paper or draw free hand? thank you

Those paper colors you dont make use of... you could send those my way. Id put em to use😎
