We swedes, who grew up during this era, took ABBA for granted. They were played in most swedish homes, it came with being a swede, so it was first later we understood how big the phenomenon was for people outside sweden.
Many of the swedish songwiters within pop, rock and even within metal have in interviews mention the impact ABBA have had on them. 😊

Funny..... back in the day, a lot of people (actually, just men) wouldn't admit they owned an ABBA album even though they secretly did. The legacy of ABBA has only grown as the decades passed and are now universally praised. Always loved this song.

You both should review "The Winner Takes It All." This is MY favorite ABBA song, sung on lead vocal by Agnetha, right after her divorce from bandmate Bjorn. When she sings it, yiu know she is singing straight from the heart. And this is arguably her best-ever vocal performance. Agnetha has the unique ability to tell her story in music and just watch her face as she sings this huge hit. I recommend the live performance from German TV. She is stunningly beautiful. It is amazing and sure to tug at the heartstrings. The production and harmonies and lyrics are perfect. Check it out. I have a gut feeling you both will love it.

so happy to see you again with ABBA songs
    "Fernando" (1976)
is a soft ballad, so nice and beautiful
The best is the beauty of their vocal harmonies, very soft at the whisper level but at a level of perfection, that explodes in a magic chorus
I have compared it to "Chiquitita" (1979) because both songs have similarities and contrasts
Both have the title in Spanish, and was recorded in spanish too (to the album in spanish "Gracias por la Música" In 1980)
Both are pop ballads with an initial verse sung alone and from the second chorus in duet, with a very catchy and popular chorus (in my country Argentina are songs that we would sing in a circle of friends, because we all know their lyrics)
The two videos show the contrast of fire and snow, night and day
They were both very most worldwide successful, only behind "Dancing Queen"
ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía"
It was the manager who convinced them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style
(Frida had done it before in 1975 on her solo album in Swedish and it was a success, but the lyrics was different)
He was right and everything was a success, one after another in that year 1976, with three #1 consecutives in UK
    Mamma Mía (2 weeks)
    Fernando (4 weeks)
    Dancing Queen (6 weeks)
In addition, this variety of options had different results in each country.
"Fernando" was a colossal success in Australia (14 weeks at #1 surpassed the "Hey Jude" mark) and 7 weeks at #1 in Germany
"Dancing Queen" was 14 weeks #1 in Sweden and six weeks #1 in the U.K.
Both were #1 in the U.S. but in various rankings: "Dancing Queen" on the Billboard and "Fernando" on Adult Contemporary
The official video of "Fernando" was filmed in February 1976, with Dancing Queen the next day
in these Official Video you could see:
Bjorn & Benny, both in guitars
Frida & Agnetha confronted both in frontal and profile images (repeating the "Mamma Mia" technique used)
    premiering her gypsy style dress
    and a last comparation
"Fernando" (1976) is first ABBA single with Frida in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released before ABBA)
as "S.O.S." (1975) is first ABBA single with Agnetha in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released after ABBA)
For a next reaction, my suggestion is
"Mamma Mía" , the single before in 1976, another banger and worldwide hit to ABBA
Thanks so much for these video
I wish you a great week
    See you in the next
    My best regards from

Back in the 70s ABBA were often criticised by the media and press for being too camp and kitsch. But the fans loved them. Many fellow musicians respected them as fantastic song writers and music arrangers. Heavy Metal legends like Lemmy from Motorhead and Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple were massive fans of the band.
An interesting song to react to would be "the day before you came". It was the last song they recorded before they took a 40 year hiatus. A storyteller song that's fairly unique in their back catalogue. A great video too. Well worth checking out👍

I think this song and their song Dancing Queen were they're two best contributions to the era of disco I love both of these songs and I just love the way those two women's voices blend together when they sing. This is definitely one of my favorite groups back in the'70s they came on with the bang and lasted about a decade and then they kind of left the scene and haven't been back but they made some pretty great music while they were traveling and Performing all over the world in the decade of the seventies.

The planet's were definitely in the right alignment when Ani Frid and Agnetha were joined together. Such a rare occurrence to have two voices like theirs joined together, really by happenstance. Even today with all of the ABBA shows and musicals going on and drawing the finest singing talents around, they still have not found a match for these two heavenly voices combined.

  • @malcolmbrown7683

It amused me when you said that 'Fernando' was written by the two guys. Benny and Bjorn wrote all their songs except 'Disillusion' which was written by Agnetha who wrote a lot of songs before ABBA and some after. She made five albums after ABBA and they are all good to listen to. Probably the best is her last one (2013) called 'A'. The only other recording not composed by them was a medley of three old songs 'Pick a Bale of Cotton' etc.

  • @petterhansson7312
    @petterhansson7312 ปีที่แล้ว +2

In addition to the fantastic singing of Frida and Agnetha plus their 'third voice' and the superb songwriting and lyrics by Benny and Björn, respectivly, a big 'secret' of the ABBA sound was the unique instrumentation and production by Michel B Tretow and Benny. One important aspect was that there should be an increased number of layers for each new verse and chorus to finally build up a 'Wall of Sound'. In addition, total changes of tune and addition of musical elements in the middle of songs contributed both to the (a number of) hooks in each song and the fact that your never get bored of listening to ABBA.
They practized for a long time during long hard hours over many years in the studio and also by producing many other great Swedish artists. By their third self-named album (ABBA), they had almost pieced the jigsaw together and by their fourth album (Arrival) the production was already world class.
Thus, it might be interesting to see how it all started in 1972 with a good tune and very talented ladies' vocals on their first single 'People need love' (link below). However, at that time the name of the group was Festfolket (or even Fästfolket = Swedish for 'People engaged to get married'). Unfortunately, this TV special for Swedish Television is not live but playback. However, it still gives you a very good idea (in hindsight) of what was going to come. The song even includes yodeling ;-)

Please React to ABBA’s “Chiquitita” (little one, in Spanish). FYI, did you know they got their name by using the first letter of each of their first names…Anna Freida, Bjorn, Benny, Anna……SanJoséBob

Has daughter heard this before or was this the first time?

Actually, Fernando was written originally by Agnetha as a solo work. 99% of the time ABBA songs were Benny and Bjorn.
But a great song nonetheless 👌

There could be a slight confusion on your part. Fernando was written by Benny and Björn originally for Frida's solo album Frida ensang, with Swedish lyrics.

Hi there Col. Well it was written by the guys for the brunette Frida.not Agnetha.Twas her big solo hit in Sweden originally recorded in Swedish(1975).And then they all did this In English for ABBA and became a huge worldwide hit a year later .In Australia it was n01 for 14 weeks and held that record for ages till Ed Sheeran broke this with 'Shape of You'.Agnetha had done in Swedish a solo version of Abba's 'SOS', that was also a big solo hit in Sweden same year.

@@colrhodes377In a way yes it was.Disillusion was recorded in 1970.Agnetha wrote the music Bjorn English lyrics. Then they decided It to include it in Abba's debut album in 1973.Benny and Bjorn did the production.Agnetha re-recorded this for her 1975 solo album in Swedish. That version i like even better.More b.vocals and more strings.A more enriched orcherstration.Title was 'Mina Ogon'.

You should check out Cher singing this in mamma Mia 2. It is the visual embodiment of the song

Cher singing Fernando is horrible! Mama Mia actors singing ABBA Songs never even came close to the original. True ABBA fans are not that fond of Mama mia.

Of course it is a lovesong but at the background there is this war and failing in battle and getting older together. The romantic heroism is over ....

Some say they did not speak english, and sang their songs using phonetics,,, don't know if that is true.

Unfortunately the song is dedicated to a Marxist revolutionary called Che Guevara, who executed dozens of people in Cuba.Fernando sacamuelas was his nick ( he was a doctor) . When he went to Bolivia to start a communist revolution He was killed . The flutes that You listening in the intro are the Andean Quenas . No everything that shines is gold.
