Please, for the love of God Grenadier owners . . . Recognised how much I liked the Grenadier. Rarely if ever have I gushed about a 4x4 that much. Yet this seems ignored and I'm too often asked why I "Hate the Grenadier?" If you can't remember the positives I presented, then you've become brand-biased fan-boy. Like I try to be, at my cost, be honest. Notice the good - and the bad. I am still frustrated that Ineos did not build the car they set out to. They built an expensive, luxury 4x4 and that is not what original Defender owners wanted. And until they do, I'll not stop talking about how they let us down.

Interesting comparison Grenadier v 300 series, IMO 2 very different vehicles. I have access to both and they are almost night and day in many ways. Access to parts for both is the same I have found. Reliability long term? That is in the future, I hope the Grenadier makes it, the 300 the same. All very complicated machines.

I really do hope they succeed.
Personally, I hope they make a single cab and a spacecab/extra cab version. And the possibility of a 2 door wagon with a van sliding door.
Ineos have 1 vehicle, with 2 versions. A 4 door ute or 4 door wagon.
Options should not be grouped into a particular version, you pay for what you want and need.
Maybe that would mean a slight loss for the company financially, but I think it would be easily recouped by charging the rich twats $200,000 for the range topping luxurious shopping trolley.

@mini_steve apparently, there is a single cab on the horizon from what the CEO said. Whether it goes into production, that's another matter.

I believe the top honchos at Jaguar now claim that the whole thing was a hoax to get publicity.
      I think it is BS.
I think they had not anticipated how the world is sick of woke already. They thought that bending to KS and his cronies would bring massive success. What they got, was taken from behind.

So many people making comments about how they killed the Jaguar brand. Wake up! It died a while back. No one was buying their cars so either they just shut up shop or give it one last go.
Obviously you could also argue that if they make reliable cars that people wanted they wouldn't need a relaunch.

    • @logtothebase2

Agreed, they have struggled since the 80"s with a image of being an old mans car, although they were hip enough in the 60's with the E Type and there are some fantastic rebuilds and restomods. Their new SUV's are soso and look alot like "budget" models from Hyundai, Kia and the like, not terrible thing but not distinctive. The one big problem is they missed the Zeitgeist which is currently very Anti Woke, diversity and inclusion. either that is deliberate to get attention or shockingly naive for the Marketing and advertising.

The Ineos BMW engine , in the Diesel Version at least , I believe is the Old (now) M57 . Early Common Rail .
Considered one of the most reliable " Car " diesels ever made . Better that Toyota , generally speaking .

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 หลายเดือนก่อน

No, it’s the current engine. The old diesel engine used to grenade when in use with UK Highway Patrol and was withdrawn from service after one officer was killed when his engine threw a rod when on a high speed mission. Many others also failed in a similar way and BMW withdrew the model from emergency service sales in the UK.

The Internals are Massively strong . Plastic ancillaries and Electronics were the only problems , Ever .
The New BMW engines are significantly more fragile .
Also , for Highway Patrol duties , Diesels might not be the Best choice .
Selected for their Frugality , obviously , but a Petrol Engine can idle away for very extended periods without issue but a Diesel Engine will glaze up and some other issues to do with the lower volatility of the Fuel .

@ Tell that to UK police forces They will put you right.
BMW stopped selling cars to UK police forces in January 2023 after many police forces restricted the use of BMWs with the N57 engine. The N57 engine is found in several BMW police vehicles, including the 330d, 530d, and X5.
The decision to stop selling BMWs to UK police forces was made after a series of factors, including:
      Safety concerns
In 2020, PC Nicholas Dumphreys of Cumbria Police died after the engine in his BMW patrol car failed. An inquest found that a faulty crankshaft bearing punctured the oil sump, causing a fire in the engine compartment

You never mention that the back glass of the 4runner goes down, just like the windows , and it is the greatest thing ever, and all dogs agree.
I love my 4runner ,for what im doing its perfect.
It gets a bad rep with some folks because its slow , and kinda thirsty ,and being not a 1-ton diesel lol.
For one or two people to go out a camp its perfectly sized.
And its easier to live with the rest of the time.
Diesel is kinda a pain to deal with nowadays , id rather have a nice simple gas burner than a ,super capable , but extremely expensive to maintain or repair long term.
    The old diesels were cool.
These new ones are only meant to be owned by a corporation that can write of the expense at the end of the day.
Blew up a Cummins with 105k on the clock because the dpf got so clogged that it blew all of the oil out of the dipstick hole and burned up #4 piston.
15k later we had a new engine in it that ran for ten minutes and then dropped another piston.
As a construction company that was super annoying .
As a average consumer wouldve been absolutely financially ruinious.
Toyota's reputation isnt what it used to be unfortunately.
Nothing they make now appeals to me and its sad.
None of their latest refreshes states side have sparked joy .
The 4runner has been the same basic truck since '04, and now they have utterly ruined it.
The new tacomas are bigger than a full size truck from the 90's , and less capable , with that candyass 5 ft bed.

What’s interesting about the grenadier is that they aren’t holding their second hand value in the way that old defenders still do. In the UK you can pick up a year old field master Grenadier for about £50k, which was close to £75k new. Compared to a nearly 8 year old 110 defender that’s been looked after still fetching price around the £35k mark. With these prices comping down for Grenadiers we might see a few more modded and adapted versions that take away some of the problems. The steering centering issue for instance can be improved by changing some of the steering geometry I hear.

My Ford Ranger [both of them] are superb but they have a fairly long rear overhang [shallow departure angle] and may have a longer wheelbase that is optimal for extreme off road use and playing around. Also leaf springs at the back are a weak point as, at least in the UK, they are rated for a ton payload which means they are maybe too stiff for some conditions and, let’s face it, leaf springs are prone to break leaves. It may be a reflection of my vehicle’s duty cycle, but I have replaced five leaf springs on my 2014 Ranger, with a mix of genuine parts and aftermarket.

Professional oriented vehicles, 4x4, for agriculture, of tarmac activities are difficult to find in the market.

This I6 BMW engines are a known quantity, and some version of them has been sold on every continent. BMWs issues are never their engines, usually it’s the Bosch electrics first, then the other bits start failing: brakes, suspension, cooling, etc. but the engine itself is still silky smooth. If Ineos has got those other systems sorted, the engine isn’t likely to fail.

Tell that to the UK Highway Patrol police. They have withdrawn the last generation of BMW diesel 3.0 from service due to massive and common critical failures where they put rods through the block. These engines also have lots of plastic components and some gaskets that harden and get brittle with age and heat and eventually fail.

They just redesigned that 4runner, it's larger (unfortunately). I have the 3rd generation 4runner, it's shorter than a 4 door J90 Prado and a little narrower too. The rear window rolling down is a signature feature. Until the J90 it was sold in many markets like Australia. It was sold as the Surf and SW4 in Brazil, with a diesel or gas engine.
For the last 20 years in the US the 4runner was more Land Cruiser than a Land Cruiser because they only sold the Land Cruiser fully loaded in options that was unaffordable.
Also I'd say Jaguar is green washing or virtue signaling. Woke has some connotations.

Well, the four wheel drive community trounced the defender, but it’s been a huge success for JLR. I think the same will happen here with Jaguar. People forget that the biggest middle class market, and growing, is in Asia now and quite honestly, JLR’s old customer base is just not where the money is now. 50% of car sales in China are electric and they love to make statement purchases, Jaguars new concept looks to fit that perfectly.

*If* Ineos develop strong supply chains in line with the popularity of the car, they may be onto a winner. I imagine neither Defender nor Jeep supply chains were robust in the early days, but you could repair them with binder-twine and chewing gum. Can’t do that with a modern car, despite Ineos attempting to simplify. I say good luck to them, more choice for the consumer is a good thing!

the early jeeps used off the shelf components...these parts could be taken from a totally different brand of vehicle and modified to work using simple wrenches/spanners....as you mentioned, cars nowadays are all pretty much proprietary with exotic tools required...so this type of bush fix is now near impossible.

One would hope that Grenadier would have take the opportunity of the enforced shut-down to build stock of spare parts, especially to start making replacement body panels and chassis sections. Also get their workshop manuals on-line for customers. Also take the opportunity to facelift the vehicle in order to modify and correct any common issues and design faults. Production is unlikely to restart before February IMO due to Recaro seat production being transferred to Italy and all the work that entails.

Jaguar hasn't built a desirable mass produced vehicle in over 50 years...the E-Type was the pinnacle. From 1975 to now what have they produced that is still in demand, collected, sought after or even named "one of the best"? The F-Type is ok, but still not on par with similar priced Porsches, BMW's or even the lowly Corvette. Seriously, it's time for Jaguar to close the doors.

I think Ineos miss the boat by not doing a SWB, just think of how many people by an offroad 4x4 just for the status and never tack it truly off road. Yes it's not a Defender replacement but it's looks close enough without having the sudo bling styling of a G. I truthfully believe they would have sold a SWB like hot cakes. Maybe they just servay the real offroaders and overlanders with a few farmers thrown in for good measure, reality is the SWB Defender sold to a much wider market and that market as much as they like the idea of a LWB off Roader the reality of that turning circle will soon put them off.

I’ve gotta say, I’ll never ever buy any of these vehicles, and all the other similar models too! This intrusive “safety” equipment, features drive me insane within 5 minutes! Vibrating steering wheel, alarm and flashing lights if I dare turn my head to see around the corner, seat belt alarm, doors open alarms, ABS, automatic brake application, limp mode for the most minor fault code, electronic gear shift, losing the warranty anxiety, dealing with dealerships on warranty issues, (which seem immediate and continuous on every model), paying 60k to 170k for a car that is too technical, and far too complicated for the ability of the manufacturer. Parts unavailable, and the worst of them all, the very frequent and soul crushing engine failures!
None of these vehicles will be crossing the Canning Stock Line when they are 10 years old, let alone 28 years old as my 80 series!

If it took 800 people to work on this rebrand, what are their qualifications or abilities? It's one thing to be radical and grab headlines by abandoning a company's history, heritage, and customer base; it's entirely another thing to try to capture a new market that you don't even know exists. If their target market resembles those in the adverts, they'll struggle for customers. They've grabbed a headline, and we all know they're rebranding. Thus far, they have yet to grab any customers, and their poor sales performance of late looks likely to continue - although as they'll have zero sales in 2024, any sales in 2025 will be an improvement, whether they'll match pre-plandemic levels, I very much doubt. They want to be a small niche brand for niche customers.
