I feel like cataphracts are a pretty underrated force in history. Yes they weren't as fast as knights and yes their armor might've not been as advanced (but their armor was still effective), but they are still a force to be reckoned with. Especially considering the fact that they existed hundreds of years (late antiquity) before knights did, in large numbers as well. Anyways, great music man. You have earned yourself a new subscriber :)
@PJ Rivera yeah im aware that knights evolved from cataphracts. As you said, their armor is superior but was (to degree) inspired by previous cataphracts. Knights also used stirrups which (at least not until late antiquity) cataphracts did not. Edit: maybe they didnt use stirrups at all, Im not 100% certain. I saw a source somewhere say that towards the 4th to 6th cen. they started to use stirrups.
@D Anemon : There is talk that different methods of metallurgy produced diffferent exigencies -- European plate mail was developed because (A) the quality of metalworking wasn't as good as that in China and/or India in the Middle Ages and (B) plate mail was developed mainly to counter stray bullets - before the Early Modern Era, only sallets were genuine plate mail, the rest of a knight's accoutrements may have consisted of either leather, mail, or brigandine - the latter being popular all across Eurasia. It was still in use by the Napoleonic Wars, although many a cavalryman despaired at the prospect of wearing a plate mail cuirass into combat -- even if it meant that he could survive a melee encounter with say, a "naked" Cossack or Chevau-Leger (they were "naked" because they didn't like the prospect of wearing heavy armour).
@@meilinchan7314 thats a myth, you know that... European Metal working was as good as Middle easterns or china's, they even had an early version of Blast furnaces at the Iron Ages.

Epic music on this video, but many historians believe that the Byzantine (700-1100 AD) cataphract cavalry were armored horse archers mounted on unarmored horses. Perhaps only the front ranks of each squadron used lances as their main weapon. The Byzantine squadrons probably copied the tactics and weapons of central Asian steppe nomads, because they were the most formidable opponents. Heavy armored cavalry, as depicted in this video, was usually no match for disciplined horse archers. Centuries later the Cossacks used pistols and lances to battle Tartar horse archers, but the Cossacks were not burdened by armor.
Say that to the Turkish horse archers that were slaughtered by the cataphracts .... Too thick armor for an arrow to deal a real adamage to the horse or the Rider
Cossacks used bows and arrows as well. They did wore armor too, not all of them, but they did, during the existence of Zaporozhian host. Cossacks do still exist, and we can trace their history to early 16th century. That's 5 centuries. Many things changed, especially considering their tactics and approach to war. They fought and won against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the strongest states at the time, which proves my point. It's not just abou the armor or weapons. It's tactics and logistics that win wars.
