    This battle is not only the water mark in the decline of the roman empire, but it also marks the end of Infantry being on par with cavalry. It won't be until the battle of agincourt where Infantry is able to destroy cavalry

    • @ladygrey7425
      @ladygrey7425 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Eh...no.
      It's an oft repeated myth that the Gothic cavalry were the predecessors of the European knights who could smash through a battle-line of peasant levies with ease. In reality, the Roman comitatenses were on the verge of breaking through the Gothic line until the reinforcing cavalry outflanked and encircled them. And in truth, the Eastern Roman Empire (where this battle took place) survived for another 1100 years after Adrianople. While it is true that shock cavalry was (often) the decisive arm of medieval warfare, much like artillery and air-power is today, understand that this does not render infantry obsolete. You can't take and hold ground with anything other than the boots in the mud

    • @mickeytwister4721
      @mickeytwister4721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ladygrey7425 nah, tangy is right. The battle started the aura of heavy Calvary in medieval Europe.

    • @zippyparakeet1074
      @zippyparakeet1074 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@mickeytwister4721 No it didn't. The Romans had learned the importance of heavy cavalry through their wars with Persia since more than a century ago. And infantry never got obsolete. Disciplined, heavy infantry in a tight formation always managed to hold its ground as we see in the Battle of Hastings 1066 where the Anglo-Saxons held their ground in shield wall formation against the formidable Norman Knights. They got beaten when they broke formation and decided to give chase to Norman feigned retreat.
      Roman infantry was queen right to the very end of the Western Roman Empire. Byzantine Scutati and later disciplined infantry like the Varangian Guard also always fared decently against cavalry.
