Cartridge setup | Lateral Aligment

  • An alignment protractor (www.ortofon.co...) is used to find the correct distance from stylus tip to tonearm pivot.
An alignment protractor is a plastic template onto which are printed the null point(s) and lines of tangency against which the cartridge should be aligned. The template is placed over the turntable's spindle (made possible via a spindle-sized hole drilled in the template) and placed against the platter.

He makes this look easy. In my experience, you generally can't see the cantilever, exact stylus tip placement is near impossible, and cartridge body sides are not parallel and are therefore useless in aligning the cartridge. This guy, "I guessed and I was right." is living in Cloudcuckooland.

Why no explanation for how to do the overhang alignment, and no examples of what misaligned cantilever looks like? "It looks pretty good" is not instructive. In contrast, the Fluance video shows examples of misalignment and how to correct it.

You did well to subtitle your demonstration, so that we can see absolutely nothing of what you're doing... 😁

Why people like to make installing a cartridge more difficult and risky by not using the arm lift/lower is a mystery to me. Re: overhang depends on which protractor you use, ie...Stevenson geometery being a little different to Baerwald and both may differ from the overhang dimension given by the turntable manufacturer. None are wrong, but if you want to go by the manufacturers overhang then you need to use their own protractor, or possibly try to find one with the same geometery. Perhaps one of the more elaborate and often far more expensive designs may do the trick, but I'm really not sure as I get perfectly fine results with this cheap Ortofon (Baerwald geometery) 2 point protractor on my Pro-ject 2Xperience and I've installed a few cartridges in my time.

@Ortofon Nice demonstration, on cantilever parallel alignment, but you omitted how to use the 'overhang' measurement which assists in correctly aligning the stylus tip to the correct distance from the tonearm pivot. My Ortofon protractor has markings for this but many people have complained that this aspect is not explained properly.

Ortofon seria 2M - to dziadostwo. I tłumaczenie na angielski : Ortofon 2M series - this is crap. The stylus support and the stylus itself are poorly made, which is why they constantly take in dust, which deforms the sound and causes the stylus to skip. In addition, the stylus body enters the cartridge very easily, which causes vibrations and distortions. Never again Ortofon 2M series. And why use Anti-resonance at every step if the stylus shakes anyway. That's it. And translation into niemiecki: Ortofon 2M-Serie - das ist Quatsch.

It would be nice to actually show the process of alignment instead of just showing "how the cartridge should sit on the protractor"

Believe it or not, this step is my favorite during the entire cartridge installation process.

A conical stylus can sometimes be better as it isn’t as critical that the alignment be perfect.

is this protractor based on Stevenson? I wonder if its suitable for Technics 1210

    • @johnmichaelrichards
      @johnmichaelrichards 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, it is fine for the Technics SL-1200/1210 series of turntables with Technics and SME S-arms, and many straight tonearms too. It is optimised for arms that are 9" (22.86cm) long, as most (not all) arms are. Certainly, it is fine for the standard arms on Technics, Pioneer, and most other turntable arm combinations.
I use Technics SL-1200.1210 series turntables professionally, as a radio presenter and club/mobile DJ and at home too, in a hi-fi setting, and I have used the Ortofon protractor for all of them, and for my other turntables, including a 62-year-old Connoisseur, with an SME 3009 SII tonearm.
The only thing not mentioned in the video is how to use the 'overhang' feature, which assists in correctly aligning the stylus tip to the correct distance from the tonearm pivot.

I heard this one is a Baerwald protractor. A 2-point protractor will work with any turntable as long as the slots in the headshell are long enough, so it will do the trick, but it's a different geometry with a different overhang and offset angle.

@@ElectricVintage-u1o I just received a new Ortofon Blue 2M complete stylus/cartridge and it stated that it used a Baerwald protractor mount. I’m satisfied with that for my setup, it played very well throughout all the albums I’ve played since the install.

But how do you set for the correct overhang? I have a Music Hall mmf-2.2, which is more or less a Pro-Ject turntable under a different name, and they say that the correct overhang is 17mm. The only problem is that they don't seem to mention just how they came up with that, or from what point on the tonearm are they measuring. I also have an AT-LP140XP, which calculates their overhang by going from the stylus tip to the rubber grommet at the back of the headshell connector, but there's no such reference point on this tonearm that I can see other than a screw on the bottom where the ground attacthes to the tonearm. Is that the measurement point?
The turntable sounds decent enough, but I have this nagging feeling that there's something I'm missing, and neither Music Hall nor Pro-Ject have been any help to date...

Overhang is the distance from the center of the spindle to the stylus tip when the tonarm is positioned over the spindle.
When using a two-point protractor as shown in this video, the overhang is set correctly when the cartridge is aligned on both null points on the protractor. This overhang may be differrent from the one specified by the turntable manufacturer, as the manufacturer may have used a different geometry with different null points.
