  • In this video, Leif Johannsen, Ortofon's Chief Officer Acoustics and Research, explains how to upgrade your turntable with a new cartridge. Replacing your existing cartridge with a new one can seem like a complicated process. Luckily, this is not the case! Leif Johanssen takes you through the process of both dismounting your current cartridge and mounting a new one while explaining the similarities and differences between the OM 5E and 2M Red.
WHY SHOULD YOU UPGRADE YOUR CURRENT CARTRIDGE?
There are many reasons to replace your current cartridge: one of them may be that you want to improve your audio experience and upgrade to a better cartridge. Another often overlooked reason is that the stylus of your cartridge is worn out. After about 1000 hours of playbacks on your turntable, your stylus starts to wear out. Not only does this mean that the perceived sound will be significantly worse, but it also means that you risk destroying your precious records. But whether it's because you want to take your vinyl and listening experience to the next level, or it's because your current stylus has served its duty, this video will help you with how to replace your cartridge.

    PLEASE NOTE:
Some of these adjustments may not be necessary or possible due to your cartridge, turntable, or setup equipment. But the more adjustment you make when setting up your cartridge, the greater experience you will get.
Always remember that cartridges are extremely delicate devices. Absolute care and attention must be given when installing your cartridge to avoid any accidental damage.

I’m so glad I found this video. I was replacing my needle on the cartridge, and I thought I couldn’t do it myself since I didn’t have my own scale, but this helped a lot. Thank you so much :)

I bought the 2M Blue. Thanks for this. Can't wait to see how great the sound will improve. I already love the sound of my OM 5E since I added Acryl It to my setup.

The upgrade from OM5E to 2M Red is somewhat controversial and the benefits may depend of the rest of the system. 2M Red has higher inductance and is more sensitive to capacitive loading. There are many opinions where people actually prefer OM series to 2M series. I guess that on lower end systems (not low quality systems by any means) the OM may sound smoother and more balanced.

I recently upgraded the cartridge that came with my Sony turntable to an Ortofon 2m Blue, the difference is truly amazing, I'm currently going through my record collection and the sound is a real eye-opener. I've seen comments about this cartridge lacking bass, all I can say is as far as I'm concerned there's plenty of bass as the guy says it's a very definite improvement in sound quality.

I have a question. I ordered the same stylus from Music direct. In their catalog it shows that it has that red triangular plastic piece, but when they ship it to me they only shipped the stylus . Are they assuming that I already have that red piece. My turntable doesn’t have the cartridge or the stylus it just has the arm. I feel like I’m missing a piece or something, does anyone know of a diagram of what it supposed to look like? Thank you in advance.

May not get a response but wondering if it can be installed on a linear tracking turntable

Assuming your tone arm has a headshell then Why not pay the xtra for an all in one cartridge and headshell and be done with it? Changing is fast and so simple. Always smart to have two cartridges with headshells.

My new Fluance RT-82 turntable came with the Ortofon OM10, and thinking about switching it up to the Ortofon 2M Red. But I read that the 2M Red is essentially an upgraded OM10. Is it worth going to the 2M Red (cost?) is the difference between the two minor and to stick with my OM10? or is it worth the switch? (my vinyl collection goes back to the seventies, but I kept them surprisingly clean and scratch free.)

Fitting an OM20 stylus to your existing OM would be more worth I guess.

Hello, I have two questions 1. I have your product Ortofon 2m Blue. I recently bought only a new single tip. The question is, how many times can I replace the individual tip in the original head before the entire head needs to be replaced? Second question, can I insert a black 2m Black tip into the original head from the 2m Blue portable? Well thank you.

Cartridges don't wear out. You can use them for decades.

Is the 2M red comparable to the OM20 or 30? It would be helpful to know some of the key differences between the MM and OM lines. Thank you!

@r33mote - sorry, mate, just giving you a hard time🙂 I mean, I’m sure you realize this is Ortofon’s TH-cam channel and this video is about the specific cartridge upgrade I asked about. I simply find it a bit amusing you assumed I arrived here randomly/didn’t Google/would prefer to dig through forums as opposed to going directly to the source. I actually do appreciate your insight - it’s very helpful knowledge. Thank you. All good.

If your turntable doesn´t have colored wires you can paint them with nail painting!!! Just a point!!!
