This game had my friends and I go, “Did you find this item?” “How did you beat this boss?” Like we were back in the 80’s. Something I thought we would never get back in a post internet age.
Yes, so much this! Even to point when I was stuck I asked my friends instead of consulting a guide since this game is so much better to experience without a guide.
Props to this guy for taking 2 months to properly put out a review for this game. He actually played/streamed it, got his thoughts together and put out a review. Unlike every other channel that has to rush out a review to get them clicks. My respect for you continues to grow.
I'm subbed to him he did this last month and had it recorded live on twitch but waited till he actually finished the game in the hopes of maybe his mind has changed. Either mad respect for max on waiting
Pretty sure this is on stream and after he finished the game. He is even wearing the same shirt if you watched his last Elden Ring video. If you are saying that he actually finished the game then yes every reviewer should finish the game before making a review.
Honestly I like it more than Breath of the wild. I love how the difficulty is so customizable and exploration is so rewarding. You'll never know what you're going to run into it's so exciting!!
@@intothekey the exploration in ER is not rewarding. You just find the same copy and pasted bosses and most of the weapons can't be used unless you respec. I had a lot more fun on my 2nd playthrough when I ignored most of the filler content.
@@supersaiyankrillin1237 I don't agree with this, I think the NPCs and cool events like the windmill village in the Altus Plateau or Castle Morn in Limgrave are absolutely astonishing to find strewn around the world
First time Souls club: I'm obsessed with this game. The vibe of the Souls series I was always attracted to, but the difficulty was a huge turn off. I'm 45, and not nearly as good as I used to be. I appreciate the design so much, because it rewards you at almost every turn. Too hard? Come back later. You explore a lot? Secrets abound. Getting frustrated? Co-op! I went from very hesitantly pressing a button for New Game, to "I can't wait to get to Malenia to test myself."
I'm like 250 hours in it, level 160 and I haven't even beaten the game nor trying to. I don't want to beat the game or else I'll stop playing it. I'm just exploring the hell out of it. It's an amazing and beautiful game. There's always something new to discover. I used to be a big fan of fps games like the original Ghost recon that came out in 2002. I'm 40 now and Haven't played much of anything since. Tried a few recent games, but nothing really captivated/hooked me until Elden Ring. The beauty and it's art/nature. Its almost like a moving painting. I've died countless times but i don't even pay attention to that because I'm just really enjoying this art work. 🎨
Yeah that’s what I tell people: the game gives you A LOT of tools to mitigate its difficulty. But, if you want that punishing experience, you can do that too. I would go on a rant about wishing that more developers would let the player dictate the challenge, but this level of variable difficulty is really a marvel of design, and to expect it to be replicated would be asking a lot.
Favorite parts of the game: The CLEARLY planned vista locations where you get a good view of the area that is like walking into a painting. All the early-game teleports and the way the map zooms out over time. Everything about the underground areas. Every build feeling viable (most of the time). The late game caves/tombs still having interesting twists in design (teleporting chests, duplicate stacked areas, multiple bosses, etc.). Every dungeon having unique guaranteed rewards rather than just random drops, where even if it isn't useful to you, you know where it drops now and can plan for that on future runs. Ranni. Alexander. Millicent. Jar Bairn. Rya. Blaidd. Radahn's horse.
Ranni, Alexander and Blaidd. Yes the Holy Trinity! My wife almost cried when she saw me finish Alexander's questline. And she doesn't even like video games!
@@maximany9506 for pve yeah, you can make most things work unless your just putting everything into something like endurance unless 99 right out the gate.
A lot of reviewers dont mention the crazy framed vistas. Dr. Disrepect explained it perfectly during one of his streams. "I mean you guys see some of these shots. Coming out of a cavern or tunnel and you just see this massive castle overlooking a river with the tree framed perfectly in the background. Like that's pretty impressive."
The greatest thing I can say about this game is the fact that so many people can play the same game.. and have such a large difference in experiences.. in terms of exploration.. dungeon finding.. item finding.. playstyle.. and love it. This game is truly From Software's masterpiece in terms of story.. level design.. and player experience.
Games like this make me feel like a loser. I can enjoy games with bite size portions without feeling like a wasting my life. But if I sit on a couch and play Elden Ring for 3 hours there is this voice of guilt in my head like damn could I be doing something better with my life. I don't like that feeling. It might have to do with getting older because I didn't feel that way in my teens and twenty's.
@@theelightbearer4254i don't wanna spoil anything, if you have more than two great runes, go talk to the old lady in grand table hall, she will tell you exactly what elden ring is.
I can’t stop playing Elden Ring; so many adventures, the visuals, the music, bosses, weapons, the lore, etc. a gaming spectacle. Easily in my top 3 games of all-time.
Max is exactly the type of creator we need more of on this platform. He’s experienced, intelligent and well spoken. Thanks for the years of great content
Indeed, he strikes me as a person who is passionate about gaming. You can tell he still loves it. I wish I was still as passionate about gaming as Max. It's great content to see him talking about the good and bad about games because he really cares about the development of the game, the gameplay, and the impact the game has on the community.
I'm getting the same feeling having just finished the game. Actually bought it back in 2022 but it wasn't my jam back then so I didn't play for a good 2 years. Now I'm itching to go on a second playthrough - but only after I try the only other FromSoft game I own, Sekiro..
@Ginger Bald Try studying game development before uttering such dumb spew out of your keyboard, I'm a game tester not developer, and I can tell you for a fact how hard and insane what they accomplished in the time they had is, especially considering the amazing launch state, except the PC optimization problems.
This game made me feel like it was the 90s again, when RPGs were king. It's been my absolute favorite gaming experience in the past 10 years hands down. It's like sitting down to a big pizza with your best friends, but your best friends insist that you eat the whole pizza yourself
Great review. I'm on the same boat, where I think Bloodborne has things I personally find more appealing (the setting, the atmosphere, the overall horror/Lovecraftian overtones), Elden Ring is the better game, and one I enjoyed way more than I thought I did (and I was already anticipated this so much). It's now my favorite game of all time.
agreed. bb, ds3 and sekiro are some of my favorite games of all time. with either sekiro or ds3 in a tie as my favorite game. elden ring just came in and shattered my entire list of favorite games of all time. this game frankly just set another higher standard in my eyes. im not seeing fromsoft topping this game to be honest. the only way they can make a better game is if they make elden ring 2 with even more variety in enemies and bosses, better music, slightly less enemy combos and even more underground areas. frankly that just sounds like an imaginary game and doesnt sound realistic. dark souls 1 soured my rpg gaming taste with how high a standard it set for me way back in 2011, elden ring just completely destroyed my standards for both fromsoft and open world games in general. i cannot freakin wait to see what they have in store for us in the future. im almost terrified! even if their next game is only half as good as elden ring in my eyes, it would still crack my top 20 easily.
I will never understand this perspective. I thought Bloodborne was trash and should not be in the same realm as the Souls franchise. Didnt like the atmosphere, enemies, bosses, the fact that they give you a stupid gun. Dark Souls and Elden Ring 2 best in the series
Bloodborne is still one of my favorite games of all time, The main thing I was dissapointed with in Elden Ring is they didn't have many Trick style weapons from bloodborne in it. I still Love Bloodborne more overall but Elden Ring i cant stop playing right now it is one of the better games to ever come out.
I remember watching max play soulcalibur when I was a teenager, and my dad getting upset max was swearing lol. Now I’m 29 and have a wife and 2 kids. And max has grey hairs In his beard and a kid. Life is crazy
Never played a Souls game before, but after nearly 200 hrs finally finished my first playthrough. Still don't want to stop playing it and am continuing to explore - Not exaggerating, but this is probably my favourite game ever, and have been gaming since the Amiga 500+ era. I have Bloodbourne lined up to try next (free on PS + collection). Great review BTW!
Great work. I've played them all but think Dark Souls is the best, followed closely by Bloodborne. I would put ER third. You really should love Bloodborne. Did you ever play Fire and Ice on the Amiga?
Never got into a souls game before either but same for me. I put close to 200 hours in before beating it a few days ago. I started new game plus and still end up having hours fly by when I play without noticing how long I've been playing.
Elden Ring really is incredible! It blew me away at almost every step. The last time I ever had my jaw just hit the floor with awe and wonder while playing a game was with Nier: Automata and BioShock. I've put more time into Elden Ring then any other single player focused game and it's probably one of the top 3 games I've put the most amount of time into. I've got over 250+ hours into Elden Ring and I'm STILL discovering new stuff even on my third playthrough with thorough exploration. I think Elden Ring will be this generation's Ocarina Of Time. This is a generation-defining game that I think most other games in this console generation (or at least most other open world games of this gen) are going to be compared to.
I played this game for 140 hours during my first playthrough at launch. A year and some later, I still can't stop thinking about it, watching people play it, and feeling the urge to play it
I just recently started my first ever run 2 weeks ago on steam deck, and I’m fucking blown away especially playing the way I play through portable and docked.
I'm 41. Got into Souls with ds3. This game is absolutely amazing. Reminds me of older games. That didn't hold your hand. Plus I get sidetracked like a cat chasing a laser pointer.
There was a very special moment in this game.. a certain boss fight & the jaw dropping cutscene which followed after his death, that made me fall in love & become obsessed with not only him & his entire lore.... but with every single Elden boss, main boss, mini boss, regular enemies, main story characters, side characters, even the freaking spirit summons and their lore... the lore for all of the armour sets, weapons, talismans, ashes of war, incantations, spells.... I became infatuated... Possessed, with learning everything about everything that Elden Ring had to offer... All because FromSoft decided to be the brilliant passionate A-holes they are and make one of the most breathtaking boss fights I've ever experienced....... and that was Radahn... Everything from the entrance to his arena, the summoning of others for their assistance, charging towards him as he casts shadows with his arrows, his infamous 2nd phase disappearance and insane re-entrance, his wonderful horse Leonard... to finally, the realization of how unbelievably freaking powerful he came to be after seeing that he was holding back, even while being destroyed by the scarlet rot, the literal Stars.. Radahn easily became my favorite Soulborne boss of all time and one of my favorite characters in any game, ever 250+ hours in and still on my first playthrough.. I can't explain enough how much I love this game.. GOTY / GOTD
Also the pre-fight scenario in Castle Redmane with you and all the other champions gathered, with the Gregorian chant playing in the background - gave me complete goosebumps. The feeling of camaraderie, nervousness and anticipation in that moment was spectacular. GOTD hands down :)
250 hours first playthrough. Took it slow, explored the shit out of the game and just enjoyed the ride. Now doing a strength build and already looking forward to doing other builds and challenge runs. It's insane. How the fuck did they put so much awesome stuff into this game. From Software must have the most talented people working for them, especially when it comes to music, world design, level design, enemy and character design and just game design in general. They just know how to make long lasting fun games and all that without micro transactions, predatory monetization systems or the usual bloat in many modern games that suck the soul out of what gaming is supposed to be. So glad we have devs like From Software and hope they create many more bangers like this in the future.
The windmill village really caught my attention. Seeing the insane dancing lady’s and getting the godskin peeler weapon was truly amazing. I wasn’t expecting it to be that way. I love this game
@@sygfridlink4148 Zelda Breath Of The Wild, Mass Effect series, World Of Warcraft during the Burning Crusade, WOTLK era, Witcher series, Metro series, Counterstrike are some that come to mind right away. I would have to think about it more to give you an exact list, but Elden Ring is up there for sure.
I personally felt a mix of joy and sadness when I was approaching the end of this game. I have rarely been so into any game, any adventure. I spent more than a 100 hours in my first playthrough, and the sheer discovery of everything made me so happy, getting to find new stuff, just wandering around and getting murdered by some random monster. Everything felt so fresh and exciting. Truly one of the best games I have ever played
Out of all of the games I've played, Elden Ring was the only one that made me regret finishing it. Everytime I jumped on, I literally did not want it to end. It got to that point that I just didn't want to reach the end, until I eventually did.
No joke when I say this, a game hasn’t given me such an unforgettable experience ever since bloodborne. Some have almost come close, but fromsoft has knocked it out of not only the park, but the whole orbit. This game was just a masterpiece through and through, holy shit. My GOTY and it isn’t even close
@@motivvt If BoTW 2 comes out it's an easy third for most people. Honestly I don't see Ragnarok beating this. It'll definitely be the better cinematic experience. However it won't be able to compare the amount of content this game brings to the table while still being masterclass. I can still see GoWR winning though just due to stigma of the franchise.
12:06 THIS, exactly his. I was gonna comment the same thing. This game not only is absolutely amazing, it shows you can have a successful hit game without all that industry bullshit that so many companies are going for, no mtx, no live service, no online only, just pure classic gaming fun. It really feels like a 90s game but made with modern standards, it even has the same feeling of finidng secrets and word of mouth stuff like "yo dude, did you find this in your playthrough?". And to top it even more, the physical release is a good one too, the game is fully on disc (PS4,PS5) and you can complete the game without ever going online, that means the game is preserved forever, it essentialy funcitons just as good as any old school physical game. (In fact, all FromSoft physical releases are good ones) Its what makes them so good, they represent the classic videogame philosophy in the modern industry.
I played the game twice. My first play through was in offline mode and then I played it again online with the updates. There are some huge differences that I saw such as most of the different armor sets having the exact same weight and stats, Leyndell Royal Capital having completely different enemies inside it, and upgrade materials being in different locations. The weirdest one was the Albinauric who gives you the secret dectus lift medallion was a statue in the base version, not a pot.
I've never played any Souls game before. But I have got to say this, Elden Ring makes me feel like an excited child playing my first video game again. I mean c'mon, the free exploration of such MASSIVE map without it being spoonfeeding like most games does these days is a massive treat. Finding hidden stuff yourself, making mistakes and falling to death because you are trying to see if you are able to jump to a certain secret corner, is just pure magic. As tempting as it may sound to look at online guides these days, especially when accessing of information is SOOO easy nowadays with video tutorial on youtube, trust me, just play the damn game and explore the world and figure it out yourself. It is just too damn rewarding.
This was also my philosophy with my first playthrough and it is my first Souls game as well. It was extremely enjoyable and rewarding. I hadn't felt this way playing a game in years.
I was over 1000 hours into god only knows what number of Dark Souls playthrough and I was still finding new stuff. Can only imagine how much time it will take before I've combed every square inch of Elden Ring like I have Dark Souls.
@@TomLostWave yeah I noticed the vast horizon after leaving that castle 🤣 I think they did that on purpose. I'm at the academy of Raya lucaria. That rolling Canonball was so triggering lmao
When the game first came out it was cool to give it a perfect score, then about two to three weeks after it was cool to utterly dunk on it. Now we are a couple months after release, these are the reviews that are actually useful and properly informed. Thanks for a great vid and review. Over 200 hours in, finished the main quest now I'm collecting items I missed and I still love this world.
nah, you can easily still get clickbait dunk videos months after release. its all about the creator themselves and how they approach a review, although i do agree that generally speaking the earlier the review is the less viable, depending on when they got the game. many journalists got the game a month before launch and some got it 6 weeks before it.
This game goes BEYOND what i thought a game could provide, beyond what i thought a game could achieve , beyond what i thought about the limits of a game. This is a MASTERPIECE.
I was able to get My dad and my best friend to play this game. Neither have which have played a game like this in their entire lives. My dad even quit trying to do the first boss in DS3 lol But now playing this they’re having the time of their lives, and that’s something I’ll always hold this game in high regard for years to come! GOTY? Nay! Game of the Decade!!
From beating Kings Field 2 when it came out, to playing Armor Core when it came out, and playing all the souls series, its amazing to see this progression from Fromsoft and they deserve all the accolades.
You know you have something special when you play a game till late night and still wake up in the morning early at an hour where you should feel exhausted or even hungry but you are full of energy and h no apatite because you are motivated to play the game.
The game always has something new to discover around every corner. It never gets bored because the world, the level design and the enemies are just impeccable. Everytime I tell myself I need to stop playing for the day, I found something interesting that gets me wondering. Or I get stuck at a boss but am fully hooked on trying to beat them.
My jaw also dropped when this game made me fight the same boss for the 8th time. Can't forget about that classic moment where I fought a dragon for the 30th time either.
@@nicolasvillasecaali7662 the Ancestral spirit fight comes to mind. Just... I wouldn't care to keep going in and Evading that deer for eternity. It's all just... incredible.
Finished this game after 150 + hours. Loved it. Finally feeling confident enough to jump into the other From Software games (starting with DSR) and other souls-like games.
this is probably one the games in your lifetime that you can say "I'm glad to be alive to play this game". this maybe exaggerated but you can never tell in this pandemic period.
heh and think about those who will never experience this cuz they think "its just not my cup of tea"..... i know some dudes who - even if they hear and see the praise around this title - just close their eyes and so stubborn that i surely know they will never give it a try, what a waste....
@@CoffeeGameMovie I agree people should give it a go. I did and it wasn't for me. Love the challenge and difficulty but not on the old systems it's built on. Feels to cumbersome. Not to mention far too much abusing the functions of the game to summons & reset area farming.
@Ginger Bald nah man Overwatch 2 is the same game as Overwatch, Elden Ring is every FS game smashed together, uhm dude in DS3 you can't jump, ride torrent, use summons, incantations are worthless, sword and shield is meta, there's maybe 3-4 total builds even viable in PvP. Whereas Elden Ring has all that + the best cosmetics they've ever had In a game along with more weapons/spells/items/ then they've ever had. Can't remember DS3 taking 100 hours to playthrough, but you'd probably chalk that up as "Elden Ring is just an empty open world" when in reality it's the most polished AAA game we've got since RDR2
I discovered Max through Elden Ring. Watched his entire 140 hours long playthrough and loved every second of it. Especially those 7+ hours he spent on Malenia.
Ahh, you should've been here to experience the Final Fantasy VII Remake journey together with him, because that was another one of those absolutely magical experiences... (I mean, I suppose you could still run a search through his archives and experience it all right now but, y'know, it was special to be there when it happened...) But, yeah, as far as experiences to get you introduced to Max goes? I gotta admit that Elden Ring has been Gold in its own right.
I mostly did it alongside my own playthrough so it didn't cost me extra time :) Edit: In fact, that is how I found Max. So I was playing Elden Ring solo, exploring the open world for secrets and felt kinda lonely in that vast world (I had no one to co-op with). I suddenly had a thought as to how are other people enjoying this game. And that's how I found Max on Twitch. It's incredible really because there's almost zero toxicity in his chat. Everyone's so wholesome and supportive. It felt like I was playing with family and friends. That was why I stuck around and found his playthrough so entertaining that I ended up watching the whole thing.
@@nitinnishant7783 watch the original 2020 play though first. Then watch the Intergrade 2021 play though. He has different thoughts and insights during each play through and it’s insanely entertaining to watch.
This game truly is the best game I ever played in my life. It was my first FromSoft game and I fell in love with it, completely dropped every other game and BRs I was playing for 2-3 months just to play elden ring. The one thing I truly hate is that I will never get to experience this game for the first time again.
This is one of those very few games that legitimately got me to lean back in my chair after I beat the final boss and say: “…I just played through one of the greatest games ever made.” And then pick up my controller and play some more. It’s *that* damn good.
I just got to Radagon this evening. Despite some of the frame issues, and how some of the endgame bosses act, this is my GOTY and it deserves every official award it could get. An absolute gem of this generation!
I just finished the game after 135 hours, I got the platinum and I can't stop thinking about it or playing it. And I agree with you Max, I still liked Bloodborne more, I feel like the music in the Bloodborne bosses was better and the setting and environment spoke more to me. That being said, Elden Ring is my 2nd favorite game of all time, after Bloodborne. These are the only two games I have platinum, in my 28 years of gaming.
I’m a full time dad and husband. Full time job. This game transformed me into a full time gamer for two months straight. It’s the best video game I’ve ever played. It even topped all gears of war halos elder scrolls Metroid primes and even some Zelda’s that I’ve played.
A someone who's a massive Soulsborne fan since the days of demon's souls, while Bloodborne is my favorite due to the nightmarish lore, world, and gameplay, elden ring is simply the culmination of what From Software has been doing. What i love about the series is how much *escalation* the games have been building since demon's souls that elden ring is so good it is quite amazing to discover new and very dangerous territories but you simply don't care, you're in awe of an area you never expected to find and it is an amazing experience. This is a open world that truly *FEELS* like a open world!!!! The humongous world, the gameplay, the bosses, it's beyond amazing!!!! From Software should be commended for their efforts in creating in my opinion, a masterclass game and my game of the year!!!!
I've been a fan of since Demon's souls too, and I find Bloodborne to be incredibly repetitive in terms of level design , also has the worst music and bosses(aside from ds2) of all the whole series. That's why for me I would put Demon's, Elden Ring and Dark Souls 1 above it.
The atmosphere of the Haligtree combined with its lore and environmental storytelling if you're aware of it is striking. You can see how beautiful and grand its structures are and deduce how even more beautiful it was in the past when it wasn't decaying with his sister's plague that Miquella tried so hard to cure.
Never played a souls game. I was scared of them.... I'm actually a grandma gamer now lol. So weird to think about. I tried DS1 once or twice but never made it far. Then Elden Ring. I now have over400 hrs on 5 playthroughs and I haven't even finished one of them. Though I will for sure. 2 on seamless co-op and 1 on convergence with seamless. My main in the vanilla, I'm working on collecting everything on that one. I 've watched countless hours of lore videos and many many other ppls playthroughs. I love this game. I love others as well, but there is a special place in my heart for ER. I don't know if FS can duplicate this, make it as good in say an ER2 if they franchised this. I'm not sure I want them to. But I am patiently awaiting the DLC.
i think the main fact why this game is so freaking amazing is that for its price you get a complete game with no bullshit from the devs. thats what makes it the greatest.
@@messymakaveli9098 I mean, he's not completely wrong. If the "copy paste" part is for the bosses, I would say like 80% is repeated or just had that tiny little difference. Game is amazing but still I really noticed the repetition, sometimes more does not mean better. In my opinion they could have removed some bosses in the caves/mines and put a puzzle or something else. Then again if the comment was for the combat then I agree, @Dea pond git gud
@@chrismoore4724 I've played it and beat it 3 times and agree that it's just dark souls 3 as an open world. Definitely don't agree that it's empty and has no story though. Game is certainly overhyped seeing how much they reuse movesets and enemies though
I feel like the lore helps a lot. With the help of an actual writer George R R Martin. Now imagine what we could’ve gotten with Kojima AND Guillermo del Toro.
For me what mainly makes a game stand out is- gameplay, bosses, exploration, lore, a game that pushes and challenges me. Elden Ring is amazing in all regards it offers a lot of freedom and ways to play, and it's a good, accessible starting point for FromSoft Soulsborne games. The map, environment, enemies, bosses and combat mechanics are top notch. There are some issues ranging from some bad level designs and bad boss designs. I do feel there could have been a better way to approach the story to make it more engaging, especially with the characters and questlines. That Aside, I'm glad Elden Ring is getting all the recognition, I feel like it's FromSoft's best game to date, and I value everyone very highly. It will be hard to dethrone Elden Ring as the most likely contender for GOTY. 12 million in less than a month, the chances are really high.
In retrospect, the fact that I no-life’d the game for literally months after release is a huge tell to the quality of game Fromsoftware created. 10/10, will go down in history as one of the greatest games ever made.
Like so many others have expressed, this one gave me that feeling of being awed and in wonder, the excitement of a real adventure where the stakes were high and the world truly open and free.
First souls game of my life. One of the best games of my life - 140+ hours in and I'm not done yet. And when I'm eventually done, I'll definetly do a NG+ with a different build. Fantastic experience so far.
I have never played a Souls game and this was my first. I've since gone back and started playing Dark Souls, this game completely shocked me and I agree this is one of the Greatest achievements in gaming.
I'm so happy that games are still coming out that are going to be considered the greatest games ever made, even decades from now. I hear some people say that great games are dying out, but I fully disagree. Yeah, some AAA games are just the equivalent of McDonald's in that they serve their function, are good enough, but aren't really fulfilling, and micro-transactions are a problem, but still, it really is the best time to be a gamer because there are SO MANY damn games out there, some of my favorites are very rarely talked about, you just kinda have to dig around. That being said, some of the biggest absolute bangers like Elden Ring still come out and really remind me why I love gaming so much and it's great that games like this become massive because it's so fun to talk about when everyone is into it.
I don't own this game. I have watched Max play from his Twitch uploads here on TH-cam, even though I have seen him on Twitch recently. I think his critique of the game is quite accurate when he says that it's hard to believe this product was produced in the current 'state' of the game industry. I'm also glad that this game does exist because, as he says, every now and then a game is created that sets a new standard and really raises the bar. To his other point, in the spirit of raising the bar, Elden Ring is a game, in my opinion, that is worth $80 to $100. This is what a Magnum Opus of fantasy games looks like. I get pissed when companies charge a higher price for a product that is nowhere near what this game offers up in terms of gameplay immersion. This is what 'getting your money's worth' looks like--and it's been a long time since many of us have gotten our money's worth in some of the games we buy. So, let From Software enjoy the accolades to come as well as the financial success from creating this marvelous game because they have definitely earned it.
I mean with games you never can really say if you got your moneys worth cause it’s highly subjective. You can simply just measure them by average playtime everything else is subjective
Thanks again Max for introducing me to a series/genre that I never really had interest in. First it was FF7 and now I'm into Elden Ring and the Souls genre. I FINALLY GET IT!
I hope game developers use this as a template for the future for open world games. The reward for exploration was such a massive surprise for me. Coming across a town afflicted with the frenzy and then finding out what happened by collecting a shield... just so... subtle. And the subtlety and nuance makes it so, so, so cool. No markers, no cutscenes, just storytelling through discovery
This game is the reason why I bought my very 1st console! I saw the trailer two years ago, I saw two great writers being involved & I said to myself “time to get back to gaming!” Tbh I cried playing this game cause it an amazing game and I still haven’t finished the game yet!
Great review! You nailed a lot of my sentiments as well! Elden Ring will go down, like you said, as probably the masterpiece game of the decade. The two areas where Bloodborne outshines Elden Ring, IMO, are the combat and overall art direction. Bloodborne's claustrophobic level designs FORCE you to fight aggressively and study your enemies movements. There are no "easy" options for fights. You either learn and improve or you die. And the cohesiveness and detail of the cosmic horror art direction style is insane. Mind-blowing that one man, Miyazaki, gave us Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring!
for me maybe my best game ever, at least along with Ocarina of Time. Since a kid playing Zelda OoT I haven't felt this Magic. Thank you FromSoft, a grown-ass man getting emotional. - and thank you, Max, I watched your playthrough like a ritual.
Died like 10 times to Radhan during my first playthrough. Now I can kill him easily and block all his massive attacks with the fingerprint stone shield. Such a great feeling.
Every single second of this game was an incredible experience, when i reached the 100+ hours mark (not even at the haligtree yet) I started to plan my next build
Bloodborne is a much tighter experience, and has an aesthetic and lore that appeals to my personal taste more. But I think overall, more people will prefer Elden Ring. They're both amazing.
The story of this one definitely stuck out the most compared to others from fromsoft. Not sure if its because of that GRR Martin factor or if the the lore relating to all the bosses and their insane family tree is just that interesting to where you're addicted to learning more about it.
I thought the "GRR Martin factor" was just a gimmick, but with so many NEW people actually liking the story (instead of just veterans that have already memorized all Vaati's videos) I now think it actually made a difference.
Story was nice addition, being able to also get a lot more info from game alone and not having to find some obscure item for lore or just sit and watch 5h video that explains you what you just played.
In the UK in the 80s there was a show called "Nightmare" for kids..this game made me feel like a kid again..the Haligtree..the big meteor boss after an airlift.. volcano Manor.. all stumbled upon..all because of curiosity.. as a 1st time FromSoft game for me I loved it..dlc cannot come soon enough
Quality over quantity delivers not just a fuck ton of money but an ever lasting fanbase that won't critisize you on everything. Like people do in Wow, battlefield or assasins creed. There is so much bitching on those games. And deserved too weird enough. The games are fruitless husks of what they once were
My first playthrough was something like 120 hours, conquering every part of the world, every dungeon, catacomb, cave, boss, and side quest. And I'm eager to do it all over again playing with a completely different character build. Not many games could you say that about.
How in the hell did you manage to do all that in only 120 hours? I hit 200 hours on my first playthrough and I _still_ found new dungeons and side quests and stuff on my NG+ run.
This is my first Souls game, I've been exploring any and everything.. Everytime I get to a new area I'm just looking for all the secrets and killing all the enemies. Almost 200 hours in and still haven't beat the game 😂 I'm not struggling or anything like that, I'm just exploring and doing quests of people I saw earlier in the game... Finished Ranni and others quest but rn I'm doing Milicent, Brother Corryhn and Diallos quests.. Im a level 150 at Flame Peak so I think I have Malenia and Radagon and a couple other bosses left.. Cant wait 10/10
I think this game is so incredible that after it came out other devs working on open world games were like oh fuck why are we even trying, I guarantee you games got scrapped because of how insane this game is
135 hours in and only recently got up to the Mountains. Such an awesome experience. As soon as I'm done with my first (generally) blind playthrough I'm restarting and following Fightin Cowboys huge walk-through.
It was recommended to me that I play this, even though I had my eye on it I was still unsure. Now I have recorded like 200 videos and not sure I have the patience to upload them haha. Too busy playing the game!
Without question, one of the best video games of all time. I've never put 200 hours into a game faster than this. Your first playthrough feels like a nearly endless adventure. I can't wait for dlc content, it will be epic.
I’m already preparing myself to play this game. If everything goes well, I’m going to start the journey next week. If Max only gives it just praise to this game, I think I’m going to have a unique adventure…
Enjoy! I’m 3 weeks in. I highly recommend taking your time with it. Don’t even look up stuff unless you’re super stuck. It’s so cryptic and desolate and I’ve loved every minute of it.
I agree! I've never been so immersed in a game. The lore digging is super fun, the map is incredibly beautiful and well designed and it keeps you in the challenging zone. I don't think I can go back to a ubi type open world now. I hope there's more content coming!
Never touched or even looked at a souls game before this, I was so lost with so little to direct me anywhere and I just kept going in directions anywhere and slowly crawled my way up groups of enemies until I hit the Margit wall and I couldn’t stop myself from running back into this wall over and over and just became addicted to the fight until it was over and realize just how much more is waiting beyond this first area. I fell in love.
And then you realize just how much is waiting even beyond that 2nd area, and even more beyond the 3rd area and so on. This game is huuuugggee and the content just keeps getting better and better.
Never have I and all my other friends groups have agreed on something being so good. All my friends are playing Eden Ring and loving it, even the ones that don’t like souls games. It’s such a nice and unique experience to have something everyone equally loves.
This game is a journey. A culmination of everything FromSoft has learned packed together into one massive quest across a fascinating, terrifying world in the one goal of making a difference for it all. It isn't perfect, of course (scaling is a bit wacky, more time could've been put into making more enemy kinds, some situations could be more forgiving to certain builds and not steer people toward certain weapons and spells), but I find that these qualms are minor compared to the sheer greatness this game brings to the table. - Most bosses are well designed and fun (barring a few brutal examples) and enemies are in the same camp. - Unparalleled choice in your weapons, items and spells to those that are truly determined. - Great open world that tells a story from its environment, a staple of FromSoft games. Things to discover around every corner, and it's easy to get lost in the world, but still find joy in that act. - Legacy dungeons feel unique and are fun to navigate. - Catacombs are samey, but still have enough differences between them to make them distinct in your mind. - Combat is as fleshed out as it's been in the Soulsborne format (Sekiro is too different to compare). - FromSoft is still creating good changes to the game's weapons and spells. - The same uncompromising stance on "learn how to approach this, or die trying" for every challenge you face, except there's now more options to you than ever before in how to do that. In short, I'm glad that I finished this game. It is another masterpiece FromSoft can add to its portfolio and brag about for years to come. I look forward to helping others take down bosses or navigate areas, and eventually tackling the DLC.
@@wrequiem1727 _Masterpiece (noun):_ a work done with extraordinary skill, especially a supreme intellectual or artistic achievement. (From Merriam-Webster Dictionary) Where does it say that it has to be perfect? No masterpiece is perfect. If masterpiece = perfection, then nothing is a masterpiece, plain and simple.
Part ways through my first play through, I started a new one to play in tandem due to the influx of build ideas flooding my mind. This game even has me note taking similar to how I use to navigate the original Zelda. The highest praise I could give Elden Ring is that I never want this feeling to end.
I couldn't agree more. I too prefer Bloodborne over Elden Ring even if I found ER better on every aspects on a game point of view. But Bloodborne has an intoxicating charm that I can't get enough of... the unsettling ambiance, the gloomy music, the lore
The level design is absolutely teasing isn't it. You step out into that open world for the first time and you can see the castle where you'd ultimately fight your first main boss in the distance. You can cut out the majority of the game if you wanted, but you don't want to. That exploration and curiosity just grabs you
"I don't believe that they pumped out this in the industry and the state it's in..." Its very sad for gamers that this is so incredibly true. Elden Ring is in a way, a love letter to gamers. It isn't perfect but it is a work of art on almost every level.
Love Elden Ring, it's lived up to my expectations I had for it, being a big Soulslike fan. I agree, Bloodborne is still my personal favorite but ER is a culmination of everything FromSoft has learned. My biggest problem with it was the balancing, it felt too easy for a while, then almost frustratingly difficult near the end. I'll need to do another playthrough though. Awesome game.
This game had my friends and I go, “Did you find this item?” “How did you beat this boss?” Like we were back in the 80’s. Something I thought we would never get back in a post internet age.
So you are in your 50s playing video games

Props to this guy for taking 2 months to properly put out a review for this game. He actually played/streamed it, got his thoughts together and put out a review. Unlike every other channel that has to rush out a review to get them clicks. My respect for you continues to grow.
Agreed…you took the words right from my mind
This deserves to be the most voted comment and pinned to the top.

That is good Max for you, he really care for games and watching him enjoy this one was a blast of a journey.
As a lifelong Zelda fan - Elden Ring is the game I've been waiting for my entire life. Easily one of the greatest games ever made.
I agree 100%
Honestly I like it more than Breath of the wild. I love how the difficulty is so customizable and exploration is so rewarding. You'll never know what you're going to run into it's so exciting!!
@@intothekey the exploration in ER is not rewarding. You just find the same copy and pasted bosses and most of the weapons can't be used unless you respec. I had a lot more fun on my 2nd playthrough when I ignored most of the filler content.
@@supersaiyankrillin1237 I don't agree with this, I think the NPCs and cool events like the windmill village in the Altus Plateau or Castle Morn in Limgrave are absolutely astonishing to find strewn around the world
Funny you say that because this game feels like a grown up version of Zelda to me.
The variety in areas were jaw dropping. I thought Limgrave was the entire map at first. Boy I was wrong.
One of my favourite things about the game was opening out the map. Got to the point I was hunting down the map steles like they were crack!
This game is just a testament to the fact that the developers at FromSoftware are the absolute masters of their craft.
Welcome to the Souls family :)
How'd that whole Melania thing work out for ya? ;-)
44 here.. in the same boat.
Fun fact: The description of the Rememberence of the Starscourge says that Radahn learned gravity magic in order to keep riding his horse
every build feeling viable? surely?

Bloodborne is better in literally every way IMO.
I agree with this assessmeent. It's my fav game of all time now too. It beat SMTIV, Skyrim, and Destiny 2 for me.
This is my fist souls game and I'm absolutely blown away. The open world feels like a dungeon... by far the best level design I have played.

@@RyderSontaig No, I didn't. Looking forward to Bloodborne and may go for Demon Souls remake next. I'm a convert!
Never got into a souls game before either but same for me. I put close to 200 hours in before beating it a few days ago. I started new game plus and still end up having hours fly by when I play without noticing how long I've been playing.
It will be hard to go to Bloodborne honestly. Only because of the resolution and performance though. Terrible performance but still an amazing game.
Was JUST saying to a friend that Elden Ring has had the biggest impact on me since Nier Automata.Special titles
I played this game for 140 hours during my first playthrough at launch.
A year and some later, I still can't stop thinking about it, watching people play it, and feeling the urge to play it

Dam. That comment explains your feelings very well about this game. I'm about to start it now.
Radahn easily became my favorite Soulborne boss of all time and one of my favorite characters in any game, ever
250+ hours in and still on my first playthrough.. I can't explain enough how much I love this game..

Also the pre-fight scenario in Castle Redmane with you and all the other champions gathered, with the Gregorian chant playing in the background - gave me complete goosebumps. The feeling of camaraderie, nervousness and anticipation in that moment was spectacular.

Go off, king. Say it louder for the people in the back!
I'm 200+ hours in my 1st playthrough and i still find things that surprise me. Every gamer should experience this phenomenon!

nah, you can easily still get clickbait dunk videos months after release. its all about the creator themselves and how they approach a review, although i do agree that generally speaking the earlier the review is the less viable, depending on when they got the game. many journalists got the game a month before launch and some got it 6 weeks before it.
This game goes BEYOND what i thought a game could provide, beyond what i thought a game could achieve , beyond what i thought about the limits of a game.
This is a MASTERPIECE.
I was able to get My dad and my best friend to play this game. Neither have which have played a game like this in their entire lives. My dad even quit trying to do the first boss in DS3 lol
But now playing this they’re having the time of their lives, and that’s something I’ll always hold this game in high regard for years to come!
GOTY? Nay! Game of the Decade!!
From beating Kings Field 2 when it came out, to playing Armor Core when it came out, and playing all the souls series, its amazing to see this progression from Fromsoft and they deserve all the accolades.
Kings field and Armored Core! Real recognizes real my dude!
Tenchu was the first FromSoftware game I played.
You know you have something special when you play a game till late night and still wake up in the morning early at an hour where you should feel exhausted or even hungry but you are full of energy and h no apatite because you are motivated to play the game.
Facts!!
The game always has something new to discover around every corner. It never gets bored because the world, the level design and the enemies are just impeccable. Everytime I tell myself I need to stop playing for the day, I found something interesting that gets me wondering. Or I get stuck at a boss but am fully hooked on trying to beat them.
Also when you're sleeping you're dreaming about the game itself so there's that lol

This, the game feels colossal and mysterious and frightening all in the best ways and i love it.

Finished this game after 150 + hours. Loved it. Finally feeling confident enough to jump into the other From Software games (starting with DSR) and other souls-like games.
How’s dark souls going? :-)
this is probably one the games in your lifetime that you can say "I'm glad to be alive to play this game". this maybe exaggerated but you can never tell in this pandemic period.
Nah that was GoT for me. Elden Ring felt far less superior mainly because the developers didn't update basic systems

@@CoffeeGameMovie I agree people should give it a go. I did and it wasn't for me. Love the challenge and difficulty but not on the old systems it's built on. Feels to cumbersome. Not to mention far too much abusing the functions of the game to summons & reset area farming.

@Ginger Bald L take
@Ginger Bald You clearly don't understand anything about video games
How can you have a normal life and watch 140 hours of a game review?
I mostly did it alongside my own playthrough so it didn't cost me extra time :)
Edit: In fact, that is how I found Max.

This game truly is the best game I ever played in my life. It was my first FromSoft game and I fell in love with it, completely dropped every other game and BRs I was playing for 2-3 months just to play elden ring. The one thing I truly hate is that I will never get to experience this game for the first time again.
Dark souls 1. Blind.[commit to blind] Treat yourself.
This is one of those very few games that legitimately got me to lean back in my chair after I beat the final boss and say:
“…I just played through one of the greatest games ever made.”
And then pick up my controller and play some more. It’s *that* damn good.
I just got to Radagon this evening. Despite some of the frame issues, and how some of the endgame bosses act, this is my GOTY and it deserves every official award it could get. An absolute gem of this generation!
I’m nowhere near the end of the game but excited to hear what Max has to say about it!
No okay FF7 and Metal gear solid your welcome
Just the visuals of the underground lost city is enough to make this game a GOTY compared to what other games offer these days
Couldn't agree more. This game is a remarkable feat. I managed to put 300 HOURS into my first playthrough of the game, haha.
I completely agree. I never got into any Fromsoftware games, but got obsessed with Elden Ring and cannot get enough of it. Great review Max.
Exactly! And we know the DLC is gonna be significant too!

Late to the party but Elden ring was the best financial decision I’ve made in my gaming career
Your review on the game was immaculate its honestly crazy. You really took your time with it and we appreciate that.
Mind-blowing that one
man, Miyazaki, gave us Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring!
for me maybe my best game ever, at least along with Ocarina of Time.
2 years later and this game is still going strong
I feel like Radahn was the work of GRRM. Maybe I'm wrong but gravity magic to ride a normal horse at his size? That image screams GRRM to me.
@@ACSMEX because this game's story is more accessible and easy to find compared to previous games, soul series had a great story

I’m already preparing myself to play this game. If everything goes well, I’m going to start the journey next week.
If Max only gives it just praise to this game, I think I’m going to have a unique adventure…
Let's both get ready: I bought this game just today, and we are likely going to have a hell of a journey! Good luck and have fun!
Enjoy! I’m 3 weeks in. I highly recommend taking your time with it. Don’t even look up stuff unless you’re super stuck. It’s so cryptic and desolate and I’ve loved every minute of it.
Max are you going to do a tier list for all the main bosses including their lore, moves, battle arena, design, visuals and etc.
I’m on a second playthrough on NG+ and I’m still finding things for the first time
Never have I and all my other friends groups have agreed on something being so good.

I'm glad I lived long enough to play this game. This gem will still be talked about and replayed many many years later. Thank you fromsoft
