    We’ve been pixel peeping at the files of the Q3 43 and the APO-SL 50 on an SL3 this afternoon. Side-by-side. All 4 of us professional fashion/beauty photographers and tech editors could not consistently tell the difference. It’s that good.

      I have all the APO-Summicron-SLs and I shoot them a lot, personally and professionally. I compared my SL APO 35, 50, and apo-summicron-m 35mm to this 43mm and it is very hard to tell the SLs from the Q3 43mm. This 43mm lens is crazy good. The details were easier to see on the SL 35mm but that is the reference lens, the 43mm is smaller and slightly better with flare control.

    Always great to hear your perspective and your passion on these Leica topics :)
    I was one of those who always wondered how a Q would look like with a longer focal length, since like you said I always cropped my Leica Q images, specially because of distortion.
    Today at launch date of the Q3 43 I picked up my piece and did a quick unboxing video for my small channel. Although it's simply a Q3 with a longer focal length and all the known Q quality, it's a bit disappointing even Leica has to cut cost by not including a charger although the Q3 43 is more expensive.
    I get it, since every other brand does it, but still ...
    You are lately on fire Bobby, keep at it! :)

    Again, great review Bobby! I think people have become accustomed to this focal length in recent years due to the large number of smartphones with 28mm as well as the Q. Although I've used the Q1 and Q2 over the last few years, I've never got used to this 28mm and mostly cropped my images. 35 and 50mm is still my favourite focal length with my M11. Leica is making a smart move with the Q3 43 and the APO. I will receive my Q3 43 next week and am already very excited.

This seems like a very good lens to take the ‘Quintessential’ dual ( two person ) portraits with a little bit of background fused in. Very cool!..everything is nice as it should be based on the original Q3…but some missed opportunities for sure for a better “update” especially that bump on the price point…it could have at least implemented a built in memory like their other models…also No CAI ( Content Authenticity Initiative) support which could have been nice to have and also a bump on better AF performance..because we all know that the original Q3 isn't as efficient in the AF..lol just some little things to point out..but at the same time all these points could have made the camera even more of a worthy "upgrade" and that fact that some of these points are available, i.e built in memory, CAI..and Lecia chose not to implement them in this body is kind of disappointing..for that price bump obviously goes towards the lens nothing else ..haha

      The AF has improved over when the first Q3 was launched. It can get better but it’s improved.
      The lens in itself is a big upgrade. The MTF charts show it to rival the M 35 and M 50 APO options hence why the price is slightly more.

If I take a look over to the Sony E mount and it's 35mm F1.8 or the legendary Zeiss 55mm F1.8 and having in mind, that you can build it even smaller, when it is a body with a fixed lens - I don't really get it. Hello Bobby, very informative video and thank you for your thoughts. I always wanted a Q with a 50mm lens, while 43 is even better. This will be a wonderful camera. Now I bought both the Q and Q2 and sold both again. The Q3 did not tempt me but the Q3 43 looks tempting. Still, it will be not for me. While I am not a 28mm kind of guy, the lens was not the main reason for selling the cameras, it was the form factor. While the Q is slightly smaller than most mirrorless cameras, it is still not pocketable. So if I take this camera or an M or a Nikon Zf or... I have them in a small bag. The latter 2 offer me the chance to change lenses. I recall paying just under 4000 Euros for my first Q. Yes we have had inflation since then, but 6900 Euros for a fixed lens camera with sub par AF?? I agree the sensor and the menu are both brilliant.
    A Nikon Zf with at 35/50 or 50/85 combo cost you half the money as does the 40 1.2 and 75 1.5 set up with Voigtländer lenses. It has the better AF and/or manual focus assist. The sensor of the Leica is amazing but if we don't pixel peep or crop the hell out of it you will not see the difference. This is no Leica bashing, just my thoughts and I am a Leica M user now for 14 years and still love the unique system , the experience and the heritage. Clearly if someone is shooting most of the time at an 40mm ish focal length, wants the Leica experience and brand and has the budget , I assume it will be an awesome camera.

    The emperor‘s new clothes. Normal vision is not 43mm or 50mm, unless your head is cemented in place and your eyes locked in one direction. Normal vision is scanning back-and-forth. Unless you’re a photographer looking through a lens, your vision is not fixed in one place. The advantage of a 28 mm Q3 is that you can compose a broader scene and crop later if it’s too wide. I dare anyone who buys the new 43 mm version of the camera to later crop out in post. Can’t happen. For those who ever use manual focus, you will find yourself limited in zone focusing because the 43 mm does not have the same depth of focus as the 28 mm. When you’re engaging in street photography, you are rarely too far (needing a longer focal length lens), you are usually too close and need a broader field of view. I know people have clamored for this, it’s just not an advantage for a street photographer, and probably not for a landscape photographer either.

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When we say normal vision when we look at any particular item, subject or person etc the focal length we see at is 43mm in full frame equivalent. This is science.
      Of course we scan around but when we take one photo it’s at a particular focal point.
      This lens may not be for everyone and that’s okay. No one is saying buy it haha.
      Some like myself prefer this. I don’t favor 28mm. I can respect the focal length but it’s not for me.
      As it comes to street photography perhaps take a look at some of the veterans and see what they used. 50 and 35mm were the most common.

    • @robertwayne6390
      @robertwayne6390 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My point. Your 43mm is a fraction of what the eye experienced. It is a narrow slice. While that might suffice for a street portrait, it reduces the likelihood of capturing a candid momentary event on the street. And if there is a three dimensional aspect to the shot, you will have to stop down considerably to capture what a 28mm lens can render wide open. That is science. The longer the focal length the less the depth of field. The 28mm is better suited for the street. As to landscape photography, wider angles have always been the go to. Be careful what you wish for- you might just get it. Caveat Emptor.
