The thing that touches me the most about this episode is that Deku isn't really aware of the impact he had on Gentle until he showed up. He got to see firsthand the postive effect his ideals have had on others, much like when All Might spoke with Stain and saw the woman cleaning his staue.
Gentle Criminal didn't accidently kill someone. The man he tried to save was injured, but he survived. And he wasn't sent to prison, he was just fined and got a criminal record (which is still very bad for someone who lives in Japan).
I remember people who kept on calling the s4 festival arc a filler arc. And they were proven sooo wrong by this episode. gentle and la brava saved so many lives and ended up being more important than we ever thought they would be. Kaminari and the others would literally have been dead if it weren’t for them. Gentle even got a Might U moment
I don’t think they were proven wrong, even knowing how it turns out, it still felt like filler because it felt like gentle was just written into the story and didn’t really mesh well with the plot. It would’ve been better if they had started showing clips of him around the same time as the stain arc
@@nobodynowhere8061The entire point of Gentle's grievance, is being treated as a nobody. By showing him earlier, you'd be effectively undercutting part of his themes. This is such a weird argument, like saying Spinner was just written into the story, since most of his impact doesn't happen til later and he was only shown in a frame before appearing. Gentle was the villain that followed up Overhaul, one of the least sympathetic villains - he essentially opens Deku's eyes to the plight of people who have genuine issues within society who see no other recourse but achieving their goals through villainy. It legitimately is an important part of Deku's development and acting as though he is filler for a pedantic reason as "he was introduced poorly," which is a matter of opinion rather than fact, is daffy.
@@nobodynowhere8061It still isn't filler since Gentle and La Brava are the people that gave Deku the motivation to start understanding that some villains aren't just evil (especially going off of someone like Overhaul) and that sometimes there's a reason that made them that way. Additionally, it wouldn't make sense to add scenes of him during the Stain arc as it would kinda be too soon to introduce an actual redeemable villain. We first had to see villains at their worst before discovering that there's more to them than just being 'bad guys'. At least, that's my take on it.
*Gentle and Lady Nagant. Their journeys both started with wanting to be heroes, and they really pulled through and proved how truly heroic they are. Not to mention powerful. Gentle did so much work behind the scenes and I can’t imagine how hard La Brava must be working too! Same for Lady Nagant. She’s hospitalized, but still landed that shot perfectly!* *It’s nice to see that I wasn’t the only one who cried when seeing them again...*
We have arrived at Horikoshi's absolute playground of an episode because this episode has the single biggest case emotional whiplash in the entire show. Now that AFO has the full advantage by getting the main league of villains reunited, the only thing that can really be said is that the world is properly ending with these people at the heads. And there’s just no end in sight to the limitless possibilities opened up. We’re in desperate need of numbers and strong opponents and 4 of the main students are in terrible shape and the top 5 heroes are just completely hands full or can’t even act anymore. The villains are winning and it’s NOT by a small margin. And it’s only 3 people causing this disaster. (2 parter from the villain worst case scenario and the heroes endless supply of wild cards) Dabi REALLY brings his long game schemes together on INSANE levels. The foresight he had for Toga using Double and he found the perfect time limit for her to go undetected. Now Dabi is free to surround everyone in a ring of fire completely pinned with dozens of heroes and between Toga’s max copies and his blue sun fire. And now Enji has to face him in what is likely acid rain, the air quality has to be awful, if fog starts to form from these conditions that would be EVEN WORSE and people are running out of options FAST. All because he wanted to say hi to his dear old dad. And now Enji has SECONDS to consider how he’s going to approach his son in the worst environment. Uraraka managed to dive in to the warp gate after Toga somehow managing to bring Tsu with her and Uraraka is the ONLY person that can still find the real Toga in this gigantic mess because she’s the only person that can get her to waver or WANT to communicate. But she’s lost in the ocean of people. And the twice doubles made of sludge don’t need oxygen to breathe so they aren’t slowed down on this field. Jiro and Tokoyami reconnect with Uraraka and Tsu, and at the very least Jiro is optimistic after her near death experience with AFO. And she only got a Van Gogh? Yeah she’s counting her blessings now that she understands the power gap. The heroes had pretty far from ideal planning but it was what they could manage since most of their resources were put into keeping the AFO’s apart and keeping AFS in the sky arena. But now that so many reshuffles have occurred, they now have to pick and choose their opponents that quite frankly in these conditions they stand zero chance against all 4 of them. Not Prime AFO, not Dabi with Phosphor, not Toga’s quintillion doubles, and Kurogiri can’t even be located. It’s just little bursts they can manage and pretty much ONLY Uraraka is in any shape to actually fight. She might have in my opinion the 3rd strongest quirk in the show, but these numbers she’s dealing with and temperatures are far from favorable. AFO has decided he’s caused enough trouble to the heroes and is just considering if he wants to take Kurogiri’s warp gate when it’s time. I don’t know if he’s ABLE to take it because quirk fusions are AFO’s biggest problem to steal considering OFA, and warp gate is the sludge warp combined with Shirakumo’s cloud quirk. He’s done on this field and sees no quirks he’s interested in stealing. And I’m pretty sure he’s just ignoring Endeavor’s quirk purely to style on him. (And he doesn’t know Uraraka has gravity control. Or doesn’t understand the intricacies because that’s a likely game over move.) Toga also seems to be leaving Enji mostly alone for Dabi’s sake as well. So AFO is off to join AFS vs Deku but Hawks has at the very least decided on who he has to keep down. He can’t stop Toga because she’s already been doubling FAR too long for him to stop and he can’t find her anymore so he won’t stand a chance. So he has to face Prime AFO ALONE as the only one he can hold down. Maybe not a full fight but can keep him talking. AFO is all too happy to continue taunting and playing with people’s heads. Not like he has any concern in this situation. Or…does he? AFO senses something is wrong AFS. The fight is taking too long and AFS is stumbling on things he shouldn’t from AFO’s perspective. He’s not complete because there’s JUST enough staying power Shigaraki has and Tenko for some reason is present. AFO is essentially on his way to AFS to completely recharge his lost quirks and completely overpower Shigaraki/Tenko. And let’s not forget that AFS actually seems to be confused by physical damage that’s doing more than it should from the level the AFO’s are used to operating at. AFO shockingly ADMITS this but he’s just having a time making fun of the heroes plan. They just don’t have a plan ANYWHERE NEAR as competent as AFO’s choices. And the only one in any real danger of losing is AFS during erasure. BUT THERE’S NOT EVEN ERASURE. TOGA JUST KO’D MONOMA. (So Monoma COULD copy double based on that) Aizawa and Monoma have lost all visibility and now AFS has ALL QUIRKS ONLINE. At the end of Deku’s encounter with AFS he was regrowing/molting and I said it was because he was trying to use his quirks that were blocked. And he GOT HIS WISH. He’s knocking out the electric barrier’s integrity and worse? Kurogiri can warp AFS to anywhere on the field including RIGHT ON TOP OF HIM to start an OFA theft attempt, the flight system is getting hacked as WELL as the evacuation shelters Nezu made (NEZU WHY?!?!?!?) so now Deku might be the only person strong enough to keep the arena airborne to get people to land safely and he’s at an ENORMOUS disadvantage because while he can overcome the All-Might steroids, he’s not even CLOSE to EITHER Prime AFO. The only good news is now he’s face to face with Shigaraki but Shigaraki has decided yeah I’m in control right now but I don’t feel any remorse after everything and wants to fight. AND DEKU IS SUFFOCATING FROM GEARSHIFT. DEKU HAS 6 POSSIBLE RECOILS FOR OVERDOING HIMSELF AND THE 1ST ONE HE GETS IS THE WORST. You need some SERIOUSLY crazy conditions to keep this show from ending here and now, so I'll continue on to what those conditions are.
Man, that visual of Shigiraki's new form HATCHING from his old body, along with the superb voice-action from Eric Vale, is INSANE. Horikoshi really doesn't hold back with the body horror on this character, does he? 😨
@@HaydrogenBomb oh absolutely not. And I love that after fighting with AFO’s vestige all this time and he STILL feels no remorse and wants to take over for his own reasons. (Including his own want of OFA to prove his will is greater than his master’s) Shigaraki being loose for now is FAR from beneficial…except I don’t think the Shigaraki persona is capable of using the AFO body morphing since that’s the singularity defense of AFO.
I think my favorite part of Gentle's moment this episode is how it demonstrates him learning from his mistake. The last time he used his Quirk to save someone, he only put up the air cushion without having any control of what would happen after. This time, he put up the cushion AFTER first launching himself towards the falling object, granting him control.

That is what being hero truly means. It is not always the strongest that win but the most inspiring and cunning one of all that wins. A person that is able to inspire all has the ultimate quirk, to unite humanity in all its strengths and flaws.
The reveal that Skeptic and La Brava, of all people, have history, and that SHE was the reason he failed one other time has got to be the FUNNIEST plot twist in the series. 🤣🤣
I loved seeing Lady Nagant, Gentle and La Brava again. They were some of my favorite side charactets in the show, so them getting more moments to shine worked really well for me.
Gentle’s path to “villainy” started when he tried and failed to save someone from falling. Now here he is saving EVERYONE from falling. Welcome back my king gentle hero. I think this episode he surpassed twice as my favorite villain (but I’m not even sure if he is a villain anymore) Also think about how far nagant hit that shot from. From the top of central hospital to the coffin in the sky.
The flashback and the first part of the moment teared me down a bit, but the part that destroyed me and started to cry was when Deku recognized who just helped him, that he didn't forget about Gentle. Also, Gentle, even without Labrava's boost is a beast with his quirk, he stopped a whole prison break ON HIS OWN, AND WITHOUT LABRAVA'S BOOST. Even without training Gentle had his quirk mastered. Also, that shot from Lady Nagant was made by several kilometers away, she had to break her own record of long range shooting several times over to hit Shigaraki's hand, all while still recovering from what All for One did to her.

So many lovely little details coming home this episode. Some are obvious, like the six of seven prison breaks. But others are a little more obscure, like Mr. Skeptic's claim that he'd only "ever been beaten once before! Once!". I admit I always thought that was just a self-delusional brag at the time, so finding out it was plot relevant in THIS way was amazing. And, reminder, the hero in the background is Lunch Rush. And he's cooking to power-up/power the heroes in the backfield, such as making sure Creati doesn't run out of lipids with all the things she's creating.
This episode is so great for how it ties into Deku's main motivation to save Shigaraki. It shows how Deku's past actions, to reach out rather then just punch the villains, has paid off in such a beautiful way
The return of characters like Gentle Criminal, LaBrava, and Nagant... are what I would refer to as "rewarding". As individuals who watch the anime and are invested in the story and Deku's ascension as the main character... we've watched his attempts to convert people... convince them there's another way. And it's finally paid off in this arc where three former antagonists have returned to help the heroes in their greatest hour of need. The episode... titled "The Chain Thus Far"... is a great title for the events unfolding... as LaBrava, Gentle, and Nagant are all links to the chain of events leading up to this point... think of this series as a game of "Tug of War" with links of chain pulling in opposite directions. Every character... every story arc... every event... has either added or subtracted to our links... and here in the final moments of the series... those characters/stories/events are all converging on a focal point... Deku.
It pushed back on All for One’s idea that Midoroya is a nobody because he wasn’t born with an exceptional quirk or had All Might’s aura of invincibility. As the story continues to show Midoriya’s desire to help people and his willpower to keep going even when his body is destoryed continuously inspire people and moves them to act. Deku is the perfect counter to All for One’s warped world view.
gentle crimminal's plus ultra moment is one of my favorite scenes in the entire season 🥹 the music, the animation, the backstory, the redemption.. it was all splendid!
La Brava!!!! Gentle!!! I still can not understand how people did not like Gentle. Lady Nagant!!! And with that music, perfect. Reading then seeing it still has me jumping up and cheering. Lady Nagant shot that so far and will always be impressive.
It feels so fitting that Gentle Criminal, La Brava and Lady Nagant come back to aid Deku in his attempt to reach Shigaraki since he was the one who reached out to the three of them.
I appreciated Gentle Criminal as my second favorite villain of the series behind AFO. Gentle was and is a problem, he just wasn't sadistic so fans didn't take him seriously. Gentle could easily be a top 5 hero
To quote another reaction channel: "Gentle goddam Criminal, who would've fucking thought?" Meanwhile, me: "ME! I knew! I knew all along!" Never doubt the man known as Gentle Criminal
Ok so now that there’s just an endless list of worst case scenarios happening with the heroes the ONLY thing that can really keep the heroes in the game is a wild card. Not one. A whole freaking deck of them. And somehow…the heroes have found a pretty large amount in all honesty. So let’s start with the genius techno wiz going to confront Skeptic about all the inner workings of the systems in the sky arena and the moving safety shelters. And SURELY none would know better than the OFA inner circle super genius smartest character that MADE THE SYSTEMS Principal Ne-….LA BRAVA HAS COME TO SAVE THE DAY BY COUNTER HACKING. Not only is this like THE most unexpected character to show up for me but she fills a role I NEVER anticipated. Apparently Skeptic has ongoing trauma from this girl hacking into his systems at Feel Good Inc and is the cause for the ongoing mystery of what his “single” mistake was that made him consider unleashing Twice’s full power against HIMSELF in MVA, and overlooking Hawks massaging his ego about the liberation as he sent coded messages to kickstart the 1st war were NOTHING in comparison to this. Apparently this girl was BORED and hacked into his huge corporation and shut down their systems with…the power of CAT MEMES which Skeptic is GENUINELY TERRIFIED OF RESULTING IN LIKELY MILLIONS IF NOT BILLIONS IN DAMAGES. n my notes for when Skeptic brings up this mistake in MVA, I put down “This is so unbelievably insane that you could flat out spoil this verbatim because no one but manga readers would believe you in a million years so long as you don’t bring up manga chapters and say it with REALLY obvious sarcasm. Any channel moderators will likely have no idea what to do with it.” I wish I did this to SOMEONE because I was just that confident because NO ONE BUT HORIKOSHI would in their right mind write this as a SEVERAL SEASON PLOT POINT PAYOFF. And THIS is the moment that completely sealed Nezu as my least favorite character in the entire show. Because this moment is among the funniest bar none, but in exchange, there is absolutely nothing Nezu can do to convince me he is not the most useless character in the show when he has narratively promised so much. He’s failed on every single level of what his character has tried to accomplish and he’s somehow in canon smarter than AFO when his big masterpiece defenses for the final battle he helped build and fortify himself became a battlefield of hackers using cat memes as weapons. Will I ever stop crying from laughter during this scene? ABSOLUTELY NOT. It’s comedy GOLD. And to top it off with Skeptic running RIGHT into Ms Joke, Hound Dog, and Grand, just like that this villain is out of commission. (Also the fact that Hound Dog self muzzles himself with how he’s screamed at students and All-Might is another outstanding detail. I know it’s likely a costume choice but this actually tells me he doesn’t trust himself not to bite people) What an amazing way to lose the final villain of the liberation. Now that La Brava has removed Skeptic from the picture, she’s in charge of keeping UA from crashing into Japan and killing everyone that isn’t Deku and Shigaraki who are fighting to the practical death ANYWAYS. She doesn’t have time because AFS kinda destroyed the flight system when he molted into Shigaraki, so now they need to stall out the crash. Deku can’t leave this fight so we need SOMEBODY. And if you guessed the obvious choice is to have Gentle Criminal bounce across the ocean and CATCH THE FALLING ARENA WITH BOUNCY AIR POWERED BY LOVE, that is a CRAZY fever dream. Because that’s AMAZINGLY insane. I knew we needed a hero but what we got was a true man. A gentleman. And for him to be doing this SPECIFICALLY for Deku’s sake after he put everything into understanding Gentle’s perspective in season 4 and even sticking his neck out so Gentle and La Brava would avoid charges and even respecting HIS dream of wanting to make people smile ESPECIALLY Eri is just a level of wholesome I could not prepare myself for. Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder for these people. (In sub there was a really weird subtitle moment where it delayed for a WHILE as if we didn’t even need to read the line to know what they were saying to each other. Silent communication is one of the purest forms of love after all. But it was just Crunchyroll being weird) And as ANOTHER added mystery far beyond anyone’s comprehension and I again put in my notes “You can verbatim spoil this with sarcasm and no chapter quotes” we get the answer to why only 1 of the 7 prisons had zero escapees. And it was Gentle Criminal soloing EVERY SINGLE PRISONER COMPLETELY ON HIS OWN AND DEFEATING THEM. Only ONE mild head injury and everyone is just sealed up in his elastic air shields. No casualties, and knowing Gentle’s quirk, likely few if any injuries. So it’s no wonder the moment the police find him sitting and waiting for them, I am fairly certain that they would do literally anything he asks after that. And for him to request field activity as a hero to help after getting reunited with La Brava? Yeah give this guy a whole pardon. He earned it. He was likely only going to be there for another month tops anyhow as all he did was pretty much disturb the peace. There’s NOT A CHANCE these two got more than a year behind bars and community service, and THIS is the community service they chose. 10/10 no notes. Deku of course IMMEDIATELY knows who saved them and why. The quirk is unmistakeable and hearing this Gentleman will lift an ISLAND for you is OUTSTANDING. But now he has to focus up because Shigaraki is going to DECAY and clear the board since everyone is distracted with other functions. Maybe not Deku since Shigaraki wants OFA completely separate of AFO’s influence as he took interest before Garaki even turned him into AFS. But that’s not a risk anyone can stand on. So they have to stop it all RIGHT NOW and Deku is still barely breathing! And what comes after that is ANOTHER event only Horikoshi would do. In MHA people RARELY die even when narratively it seems impossible. So having Lady Nagant return to snipe Shigaraki and piercing his steroid armor?! AMAZING. She completely broke her range record according to Snipe’s findings but we don’t even know if that was accurate! It was more of a showcase of her variety and range than her power and speed since both are unconfirmed. And I guess we can add a rail gun to Lady Nagant’s artillery because WHAT THE HECK IS THAT. She still has her AP shots and can arc her shots long after they exit her barrel, but that’s AMAZING. I can’t with this. Next episode we continue into how we can turn this around back for the heroes.
Glad it finally came through, though this is only half the episode. Is the first half coming? First, possible hot take: this episode's use of Might+U is the absolute best in the series. Secondly, I will never, EVER stop giving Horikoshi his props as a writer, cause the way he brought back THREE former antagonists in INSANE ways, but STILL kept them in narrative sense, is absolutely brilliant. Bravo, Horikoshi-sama. Bravo. 👏👏👏 Thirdly, that shot of Gentle and La Brava reuniting genuinely warms my heart. It's just nice to know that SOME people were happy in this show's darkest hour (excluding AFO). And lastly, I genuinely don't know which of Gentle's feats this episode is more impressive: single-handedly catching the Coffin in the Sky while boosted by La Brava, or single-handedly preventing a prison break WITHOUT a boost. I'll let you do the math.

I felt so vindicated when Gentle and Negant got to bring their respective redemption arcs to fulfillment by coming in at the eleventh hour to save Deku when he needed it most. Gentle is finally getting to use his Quirk to save lives, and the business students are seeing to it that proper records are made of *everyone* who contributed to saving the world from the Symbol of Fear. And Negant is finally able to use her Quirk towards truly just ends. And those ends were ones she chose for herself, not those of the corruption in society, and not those of the darkest force of the age. Goes to show how Deku is already shaping up to be a better hero than All Might. Sure, All Might gave hope to the civilians he rescued. But Deku was able to find people who were downtrodden by the current society, people that were labeled as nothing more than villains when their truths were buried, and he gave *them* hope. Sometimes, you need a hero to slay a dragon. Sometimes, you just need someone who's willing to reach out a hand.
There is a reason Twice is actually considered on the same threat level as AFO and Shigaraki. His ability to clone is legitimately limitless. Here in this fight, we are actually seeing it nerfed with a couple of restrictions. Real Twice ends the fight for the heroes here.
1:35, yeah but Kurogiris Warp Gate quirk is location dependent so he needs to know the exact coordinates of where he's warping to, which begs the question: how did he know where Himiko Toga was?
How did he know where Dabi was too? My guess is that AFO put trackers on everyone that would feed everyone's current location to that device in the hand that woke Kurogiri up
I love how former "criminals" are redeeming themselves and joining the fray. I love Gentle and Nagant so much as characters. They had such good development
4:21 they're kinda similar but this is Shishida, he is more prominent in a S5 baseball OVA and is based on a lion, hound dog went after Skeptic as you saw
Two details worth mentioning: 1. I could be misremembering, but I don't think Gentle actually killed anyone. I'm pretty sure in his tragic flashback (with good intentions, obviously), he accidentally interfered with a hero's work, and that resulted in an innocent person getting severely injured, but I don't think they actually died. Still, at the time, that would've been enough to tank his prospective hero career. 2. Not only did Gentle prevent all the inmates from escaping his prison, but the fact they went to the lengths of showing how exhausted he was when the police found him indicates that keeping up those barriers was a constant effort he was at that entire night.
Im sure someone pointed this out long before this but Lunch Rush, the person cooking in the background, is making food for Momo so that she can use her quirk.
From failing to save a person from falling to saving the whole UA fortress from falling, peak redemption. After all, Gentle’s original mistake was his body moving on its own to save someone, something “all heroes have in common”
This episode is beautiful to see Gentle, La Brava, and Lady Nagant return and were inspired by Izuku Midoriya and reach him for help. When Gentle stopped jailbreakers I was surprisingly shocked and amazed that he handled it on his own with the help of Deku’s speech. And also when he yelled “Gently Super Lover!” and the song Might U gave me goosebumps and chills I’m so happy for the VA behind Gentle, La Brava, and Lady Nagant. They are freakin awesome!! When Kenny and Montana made an edit to SpongeBob Meme 10:26 to 10:38 I can’t stop laughing that part. That is the only reason why I watch Letts React and I enjoy their reactions they are amazing couples. I can’t wait for them to react next episodes.

This is such a weird argument, like saying Spinner was just written into the story, since most of his impact doesn't happen til later and he was only shown in a frame before appearing.
Gentle was the villain that followed up Overhaul, one of the least sympathetic villains - he essentially opens Deku's eyes to the plight of people who have genuine issues within society who see no other recourse but achieving their goals through villainy. It legitimately is an important part of Deku's development and acting as though he is filler for a pedantic reason as "he was introduced poorly," which is a matter of opinion rather than fact, is daffy.
@@nobodynowhere8061It still isn't filler since Gentle and La Brava are the people that gave Deku the motivation to start understanding that some villains aren't just evil (especially going off of someone like Overhaul) and that sometimes there's a reason that made them that way. Additionally, it wouldn't make sense to add scenes of him during the Stain arc as it would kinda be too soon to introduce an actual redeemable villain. We first had to see villains at their worst before discovering that there's more to them than just being 'bad guys'. At least, that's my take on it.
*Gentle and Lady Nagant. Their journeys both started with wanting to be heroes, and they really pulled through and proved how truly heroic they are. Not to mention powerful. Gentle did so much work behind the scenes and I can’t imagine how hard La Brava must be working too! Same for Lady Nagant. She’s hospitalized, but still landed that shot perfectly!*

We have arrived at Horikoshi's absolute playground of an episode because this episode has the single biggest case emotional whiplash in the entire show. Now that AFO has the full advantage by getting the main league of villains reunited, the only thing that can really be said is that the world is properly ending with these people at the heads. And there’s just no end in sight to the limitless possibilities opened up. We’re in desperate need of numbers and strong opponents and 4 of the main students are in terrible shape and the top 5 heroes are just completely hands full or can’t even act anymore. The villains are winning and it’s NOT by a small margin. And it’s only 3 people causing this disaster. (2 parter from the villain worst case scenario and the heroes endless supply of wild cards)
Dabi REALLY brings his long game schemes together on INSANE levels. The foresight he had for Toga using Double and he found the perfect time limit for her to go undetected. Now Dabi is free to surround everyone in a ring of fire completely pinned with dozens of heroes and between Toga’s max copies and his blue sun fire. And now Enji has to face him in what is likely acid rain, the air quality has to be awful, if fog starts to form from these conditions that would be EVEN WORSE and people are running out of options FAST. All because he wanted to say hi to his dear old dad. And now Enji has SECONDS to consider how he’s going to approach his son in the worst environment.
Uraraka managed to dive in to the warp gate after Toga somehow managing to bring Tsu with her and Uraraka is the ONLY person that can still find the real Toga in this gigantic mess because she’s the only person that can get her to waver or WANT to communicate. But she’s lost in the ocean of people. And the twice doubles made of sludge don’t need oxygen to breathe so they aren’t slowed down on this field. Jiro and Tokoyami reconnect with Uraraka and Tsu, and at the very least Jiro is optimistic after her near death experience with AFO. And she only got a Van Gogh? Yeah she’s counting her blessings now that she understands the power gap.
The heroes had pretty far from ideal planning but it was what they could manage since most of their resources were put into keeping the AFO’s apart and keeping AFS in the sky arena. But now that so many reshuffles have occurred, they now have to pick and choose their opponents that quite frankly in these conditions they stand zero chance against all 4 of them. Not Prime AFO, not Dabi with Phosphor, not Toga’s quintillion doubles, and Kurogiri can’t even be located. It’s just little bursts they can manage and pretty much ONLY Uraraka is in any shape to actually fight. She might have in my opinion the 3rd strongest quirk in the show, but these numbers she’s dealing with and temperatures are far from favorable.
AFO has decided he’s caused enough trouble to the heroes and is just considering if he wants to take Kurogiri’s warp gate when it’s time. I don’t know if he’s ABLE to take it because quirk fusions are AFO’s biggest problem to steal considering OFA, and warp gate is the sludge warp combined with Shirakumo’s cloud quirk. He’s done on this field and sees no quirks he’s interested in stealing. And I’m pretty sure he’s just ignoring Endeavor’s quirk purely to style on him. (And he doesn’t know Uraraka has gravity control. Or doesn’t understand the intricacies because that’s a likely game over move.) Toga also seems to be leaving Enji mostly alone for Dabi’s sake as well.
So AFO is off to join AFS vs Deku but Hawks has at the very least decided on who he has to keep down. He can’t stop Toga because she’s already been doubling FAR too long for him to stop and he can’t find her anymore so he won’t stand a chance. So he has to face Prime AFO ALONE as the only one he can hold down. Maybe not a full fight but can keep him talking. AFO is all too happy to continue taunting and playing with people’s heads. Not like he has any concern in this situation. Or…does he? AFO senses something is wrong AFS. The fight is taking too long and AFS is stumbling on things he shouldn’t from AFO’s perspective. He’s not complete because there’s JUST enough staying power Shigaraki has and Tenko for some reason is present. AFO is essentially on his way to AFS to completely recharge his lost quirks and completely overpower Shigaraki/Tenko. And let’s not forget that AFS actually seems to be confused by physical damage that’s doing more than it should from the level the AFO’s are used to operating at. AFO shockingly ADMITS this but he’s just having a time making fun of the heroes plan. They just don’t have a plan ANYWHERE NEAR as competent as AFO’s choices. And the only one in any real danger of losing is AFS during erasure.
BUT THERE’S NOT EVEN ERASURE. TOGA JUST KO’D MONOMA. (So Monoma COULD copy double based on that) Aizawa and Monoma have lost all visibility and now AFS has ALL QUIRKS ONLINE. At the end of Deku’s encounter with AFS he was regrowing/molting and I said it was because he was trying to use his quirks that were blocked. And he GOT HIS WISH. He’s knocking out the electric barrier’s integrity and worse? Kurogiri can warp AFS to anywhere on the field including RIGHT ON TOP OF HIM to start an OFA theft attempt, the flight system is getting hacked as WELL as the evacuation shelters Nezu made (NEZU WHY?!?!?!?) so now Deku might be the only person strong enough to keep the arena airborne to get people to land safely and he’s at an ENORMOUS disadvantage because while he can overcome the All-Might steroids, he’s not even CLOSE to EITHER Prime AFO. The only good news is now he’s face to face with Shigaraki but Shigaraki has decided yeah I’m in control right now but I don’t feel any remorse after everything and wants to fight. AND DEKU IS SUFFOCATING FROM GEARSHIFT. DEKU HAS 6 POSSIBLE RECOILS FOR OVERDOING HIMSELF AND THE 1ST ONE HE GETS IS THE WORST.
You need some SERIOUSLY crazy conditions to keep this show from ending here and now, so I'll continue on to what those conditions are.
Man, that visual of Shigiraki's new form HATCHING from his old body, along with the superb voice-action from Eric Vale, is INSANE. Horikoshi really doesn't hold back with the body horror on this character, does he? 😨

(Including his own want of OFA to prove his will is greater than his master’s) Shigaraki being loose for now is FAR from beneficial…except I don’t think the Shigaraki persona is capable of using the AFO body morphing since that’s the singularity defense of AFO.
I think my favorite part of Gentle's moment this episode is how it demonstrates him learning from his mistake.
The last time he used his Quirk to save someone, he only put up the air cushion without having any control of what would happen after.
This time, he put up the cushion AFTER first launching himself towards the falling object, granting him control.

Gentle criminal fought an entire prison full of villains all night, and WON. How many other heroes can do that? This man is Top 10 material.
Gentle’s path to “villainy” started when he tried and failed to save someone from falling. Now here he is saving EVERYONE from falling. Welcome back my king gentle hero. I think this episode he surpassed twice as my favorite villain (but I’m not even sure if he is a villain anymore) Also think about how far nagant hit that shot from. From the top of central hospital to the coffin in the sky.

The flashback and the first part of the moment teared me down a bit, but the part that destroyed me and started to cry was when Deku recognized who just helped him, that he didn't forget about Gentle.
Also, Gentle, even without Labrava's boost is a beast with his quirk, he stopped a whole prison break ON HIS OWN, AND WITHOUT LABRAVA'S BOOST. Even without training Gentle had his quirk mastered.
Also, that shot from Lady Nagant was made by several kilometers away, she had to break her own record of long range shooting several times over to hit Shigaraki's hand, all while still recovering from what All for One did to her.
The stopped prison break reveal is my favorite foreshadowing in the entire series. I love Gentle and am so happy that he came back here.

So many lovely little details coming home this episode. Some are obvious, like the six of seven prison breaks. But others are a little more obscure, like Mr. Skeptic's claim that he'd only "ever been beaten once before! Once!". I admit I always thought that was just a self-delusional brag at the time, so finding out it was plot relevant in THIS way was amazing.
And, reminder, the hero in the background is Lunch Rush. And he's cooking to power-up/power the heroes in the backfield, such as making sure Creati doesn't run out of lipids with all the things she's creating.
Considering Gentle criminal's past I really like how his redemption is him stopping everyone from falling.
For characters we were suppose to forget about, this episode made me cry.
This episode is so great for how it ties into Deku's main motivation to save Shigaraki. It shows how Deku's past actions, to reach out rather then just punch the villains, has paid off in such a beautiful way
The return of characters like Gentle Criminal, LaBrava, and Nagant... are what I would refer to as "rewarding". As individuals who watch the anime and are invested in the story and Deku's ascension as the main character... we've watched his attempts to convert people... convince them there's another way. And it's finally paid off in this arc where three former antagonists have returned to help the heroes in their greatest hour of need. The episode... titled "The Chain Thus Far"... is a great title for the events unfolding... as LaBrava, Gentle, and Nagant are all links to the chain of events leading up to this point... think of this series as a game of "Tug of War" with links of chain pulling in opposite directions. Every character... every story arc... every event... has either added or subtracted to our links... and here in the final moments of the series... those characters/stories/events are all converging on a focal point... Deku.
It pushed back on All for One’s idea that Midoroya is a nobody because he wasn’t born with an exceptional quirk or had All Might’s aura of invincibility. As the story continues to show Midoriya’s desire to help people and his willpower to keep going even when his body is destoryed continuously inspire people and moves them to act. Deku is the perfect counter to All for One’s warped world view.
gentle crimminal's plus ultra moment is one of my favorite scenes in the entire season 🥹 the music, the animation, the backstory, the redemption.. it was all splendid!

Ok so now that there’s just an endless list of worst case scenarios happening with the heroes the ONLY thing that can really keep the heroes in the game is a wild card. Not one. A whole freaking deck of them. And somehow…the heroes have found a pretty large amount in all honesty.
So let’s start with the genius techno wiz going to confront Skeptic about all the inner workings of the systems in the sky arena and the moving safety shelters. And SURELY none would know better than the OFA inner circle super genius smartest character that MADE THE SYSTEMS Principal Ne-….LA BRAVA HAS COME TO SAVE THE DAY BY COUNTER HACKING. Not only is this like THE most unexpected character to show up for me but she fills a role I NEVER anticipated. Apparently Skeptic has ongoing trauma from this girl hacking into his systems at Feel Good Inc and is the cause for the ongoing mystery of what his “single” mistake was that made him consider unleashing Twice’s full power against HIMSELF in MVA, and overlooking Hawks massaging his ego about the liberation as he sent coded messages to kickstart the 1st war were NOTHING in comparison to this. Apparently this girl was BORED and hacked into his huge corporation and shut down their systems with…the power of CAT MEMES which Skeptic is GENUINELY TERRIFIED OF RESULTING IN LIKELY MILLIONS IF NOT BILLIONS IN DAMAGES.
n my notes for when Skeptic brings up this mistake in MVA, I put down “This is so unbelievably insane that you could flat out spoil this verbatim because no one but manga readers would believe you in a million years so long as you don’t bring up manga chapters and say it with REALLY obvious sarcasm. Any channel moderators will likely have no idea what to do with it.” I wish I did this to SOMEONE because I was just that confident because NO ONE BUT HORIKOSHI would in their right mind write this as a SEVERAL SEASON PLOT POINT PAYOFF. And THIS is the moment that completely sealed Nezu as my least favorite character in the entire show. Because this moment is among the funniest bar none, but in exchange, there is absolutely nothing Nezu can do to convince me he is not the most useless character in the show when he has narratively promised so much. He’s failed on every single level of what his character has tried to accomplish and he’s somehow in canon smarter than AFO when his big masterpiece defenses for the final battle he helped build and fortify himself became a battlefield of hackers using cat memes as weapons. Will I ever stop crying from laughter during this scene? ABSOLUTELY NOT. It’s comedy GOLD.
And to top it off with Skeptic running RIGHT into Ms Joke, Hound Dog, and Grand, just like that this villain is out of commission. (Also the fact that Hound Dog self muzzles himself with how he’s screamed at students and All-Might is another outstanding detail. I know it’s likely a costume choice but this actually tells me he doesn’t trust himself not to bite people) What an amazing way to lose the final villain of the liberation.
Now that La Brava has removed Skeptic from the picture, she’s in charge of keeping UA from crashing into Japan and killing everyone that isn’t Deku and Shigaraki who are fighting to the practical death ANYWAYS. She doesn’t have time because AFS kinda destroyed the flight system when he molted into Shigaraki, so now they need to stall out the crash. Deku can’t leave this fight so we need SOMEBODY. And if you guessed the obvious choice is to have Gentle Criminal bounce across the ocean and CATCH THE FALLING ARENA WITH BOUNCY AIR POWERED BY LOVE, that is a CRAZY fever dream. Because that’s AMAZINGLY insane. I knew we needed a hero but what we got was a true man. A gentleman. And for him to be doing this SPECIFICALLY for Deku’s sake after he put everything into understanding Gentle’s perspective in season 4 and even sticking his neck out so Gentle and La Brava would avoid charges and even respecting HIS dream of wanting to make people smile ESPECIALLY Eri is just a level of wholesome I could not prepare myself for. Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder for these people. (In sub there was a really weird subtitle moment where it delayed for a WHILE as if we didn’t even need to read the line to know what they were saying to each other. Silent communication is one of the purest forms of love after all. But it was just Crunchyroll being weird)
And as ANOTHER added mystery far beyond anyone’s comprehension and I again put in my notes “You can verbatim spoil this with sarcasm and no chapter quotes” we get the answer to why only 1 of the 7 prisons had zero escapees. And it was Gentle Criminal soloing EVERY SINGLE PRISONER COMPLETELY ON HIS OWN AND DEFEATING THEM. Only ONE mild head injury and everyone is just sealed up in his elastic air shields. No casualties, and knowing Gentle’s quirk, likely few if any injuries. So it’s no wonder the moment the police find him sitting and waiting for them, I am fairly certain that they would do literally anything he asks after that. And for him to request field activity as a hero to help after getting reunited with La Brava? Yeah give this guy a whole pardon. He earned it. He was likely only going to be there for another month tops anyhow as all he did was pretty much disturb the peace. There’s NOT A CHANCE these two got more than a year behind bars and community service, and THIS is the community service they chose. 10/10 no notes.
Deku of course IMMEDIATELY knows who saved them and why. The quirk is unmistakeable and hearing this Gentleman will lift an ISLAND for you is OUTSTANDING. But now he has to focus up because Shigaraki is going to DECAY and clear the board since everyone is distracted with other functions. Maybe not Deku since Shigaraki wants OFA completely separate of AFO’s influence as he took interest before Garaki even turned him into AFS. But that’s not a risk anyone can stand on. So they have to stop it all RIGHT NOW and Deku is still barely breathing! And what comes after that is ANOTHER event only Horikoshi would do. In MHA people RARELY die even when narratively it seems impossible. So having Lady Nagant return to snipe Shigaraki and piercing his steroid armor?! AMAZING. She completely broke her range record according to Snipe’s findings but we don’t even know if that was accurate! It was more of a showcase of her variety and range than her power and speed since both are unconfirmed. And I guess we can add a rail gun to Lady Nagant’s artillery because WHAT THE HECK IS THAT. She still has her AP shots and can arc her shots long after they exit her barrel, but that’s AMAZING.
I can’t with this. Next episode we continue into how we can turn this around back for the heroes.

First, possible hot take: this episode's use of Might+U is the absolute best in the series.
Secondly, I will never, EVER stop giving Horikoshi his props as a writer, cause the way he brought back THREE former antagonists in INSANE ways, but STILL kept them in narrative sense, is absolutely brilliant. Bravo, Horikoshi-sama. Bravo. 👏👏👏
Thirdly, that shot of Gentle and La Brava reuniting genuinely warms my heart. It's just nice to know that SOME people were happy in this show's darkest hour (excluding AFO).
And lastly, I genuinely don't know which of Gentle's feats this episode is more impressive: single-handedly catching the Coffin in the Sky while boosted by La Brava, or single-handedly preventing a prison break WITHOUT a boost. I'll let you do the math.

I felt so vindicated when Gentle and Negant got to bring their respective redemption arcs to fulfillment by coming in at the eleventh hour to save Deku when he needed it most.
Gentle is finally getting to use his Quirk to save lives, and the business students are seeing to it that proper records are made of *everyone* who contributed to saving the world from the Symbol of Fear.
And Negant is finally able to use her Quirk towards truly just ends. And those ends were ones she chose for herself, not those of the corruption in society, and not those of the darkest force of the age.
Goes to show how Deku is already shaping up to be a better hero than All Might.
Sure, All Might gave hope to the civilians he rescued. But Deku was able to find people who were downtrodden by the current society, people that were labeled as nothing more than villains when their truths were buried, and he gave *them* hope.
Sometimes, you need a hero to slay a dragon.
Sometimes, you just need someone who's willing to reach out a hand.

There is a reason Twice is actually considered on the same threat level as AFO and Shigaraki. His ability to clone is legitimately limitless. Here in this fight, we are actually seeing it nerfed with a couple of restrictions. Real Twice ends the fight for the heroes here.

Two details worth mentioning:
1. I could be misremembering, but I don't think Gentle actually killed anyone. I'm pretty sure in his tragic flashback (with good intentions, obviously), he accidentally interfered with a hero's work, and that resulted in an innocent person getting severely injured, but I don't think they actually died. Still, at the time, that would've been enough to tank his prospective hero career.
2. Not only did Gentle prevent all the inmates from escaping his prison, but the fact they went to the lengths of showing how exhausted he was when the police found him indicates that keeping up those barriers was a constant effort he was at that entire night.
Im sure someone pointed this out long before this but Lunch Rush, the person cooking in the background, is making food for Momo so that she can use her quirk.
From failing to save a person from falling to saving the whole UA fortress from falling, peak redemption. After all, Gentle’s original mistake was his body moving on its own to save someone, something “all heroes have in common”
This episode is beautiful to see Gentle, La Brava, and Lady Nagant return and were inspired by Izuku Midoriya and reach him for help.
When Gentle stopped jailbreakers I was surprisingly shocked and amazed that he handled it on his own with the help of Deku’s speech. And also when he yelled “Gently Super Lover!” and the song Might U gave me goosebumps and chills
I’m so happy for the VA behind Gentle, La Brava, and Lady Nagant. They are freakin awesome!!

I can’t stop laughing that part. That is the only reason why I watch Letts React and I enjoy their reactions they are amazing couples. I can’t wait for them to react next episodes.
