Usually the 'best' player in any sport is not good at teaching why they are good. The best coaches usually are the ones that couldn't DO, but could explain why the best.
Zero, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. You could have decided to guard this information and keep it from players, and these concepts to keep having unskilled opponents to thrash on, but you decided to take your knowledge and give it to the community. Instead of training and stomping people, you decided to take the time to explain these concepts to us, for us to get better. I'm not very skilled at Smash, but I follow Izaw's guides and yours as well. I've learned so much about the game in such a short amount of time that I have to be appreciative. Going on SmashBoards is nice and all, but you give such a clear presentation that it helps me understand the concepts much better.
Honestly I like just seeing in the heads of pro players so that I can appreciate watching tournaments more. I used to not really get what was going on when I was watching Melee tournaments, or even Sm4sh tournaments. Now that I check out more tutorials, the game is a whole lot more interesting to watch as well. xD Plus now I can actually keep pace with my friend ever since Ultimate. He always used to 3 Stock me but now I'm able to beat him sometimes. It's partially due to youtube, but also cause I got sick of losing. lmao

This is one of the single most helpful Ultimate videos I've seen. This is the first game I've really been serious about getting competitive in, and I've been hitting the lab alone and doing "training mode" combos. They don't work online. Ever. It really is more about advantage states and extending them as long as possible. Even the best competitive combo montages have very few true combos, because true combos don't even last long in Smash. Once you have the advantage, it's all about traps, reads, and knowledge of options. (And sometimes a little luck.)
ZeRo, I really appreciate what you're doing on TH-cam. I'm really trying to become good at smash ultimate (I'm not very good at the moment), and potentially get into the competitive scene. Your videos are super helpful and informative, and I feel I get a lot out of them. Thank you for your time.

This was really good. I have a mild desire to dig into this game's metagame more than in previous installments, and your explanation of frame traps and juggles were quite helpful. Granted, putting these principles to work with characters I use is an entirely different matter, but at least I now have a foundational understanding that can be applied to the game in general. Frame trap has a specific meaning. FRAME trap. When they have enough frames to begin making a move, but get hit if they do, like letting someone out of a block string for 2 frames so they don't auto-gaurd anymore but they can't actually press a button. You can do that in smash, & it's called that specific thing. Those are follow ups from a setup i.e. grab.
I just wanna give you a quick thank you for your guides. I'm new to competitive smash and I've learned many things through your videos, even though I already play since the release of brawl. I really enjoy your guides and they definitely help me improving. I mean, 3 days ago I couldn't even defeat a lvl 9 bot, but now I already defeat him with 2-3 stocks left. Been using Roy a lot lately. I suck at juggling in general. Made a comment on a different video of Zero's a while ago about my controller being funky. Ordered a Pro Controller a few days ago -- hoping that helps. But man! Roy's so fun to use. Been practicing my combos, and when I land them? Oof. Too satisfying.
Yeah, anyone else consider Training Mode in desperate need of an upgrade? Not everyone has local friends to test real combos on (in fact not even 10% nowadays), so they can't even test real combos at all! I still have issues setting up edgeguards BC of this since my biggest weakness for that is double jump out of 1st hit, & I can't even properly practice it BC barely anyone who lives in my city plays smash at all, let alone competitively. Training Mode's got an upgrade here, but to say it's absolutely not enough would be an understatement that would absolutely crush every other understatement made in the universe combined
Go outside loser. Not even 10% of players have a local friend that can play smash with them. I have 5 friends(were all graduated btw) on my side of town (in a small town I might add ) that have smash and we play all the time. Don't cry for a training mode go make friends

Oh, & don't even get me started on those who live in the middle of nowhere & have absolutely 0% chance of finding local partners even if they're extremely nice people You're the extreme exception, & at best case scenario only about 30% of US players actually have local partners available as options. The other 70% (& Likely more than that) don't have that option available to them (whether they're in the middle of nowhere, live somewhere where gaming isn't as popular of a culture, or are just plain rude), & they'd have to move JUST to be able to do those practical combos! & if you for any reason, family or money related, can't move, well, you're fucked! Yeah no Nintendo needs to fix this shit now, you're argument is invalid
@@Schokosnuss Keyword LOCAL. It's much easier nowadays to find friends online than it is Local in 99.9967% of all cases! The "Best" way to try practical combos outside of actual matches is to setup a battle arena with Infinite Time, but that has SO many issues in & of itself. You can't change percentages, you can't reset stale moves easily (unless killing yourself does so & I didn't notice), & if either of you don't have a mic you also can't communicate on what u need to be done easily. I'm not asking for an online training mode, BC really, if not even DBFZ can include an online training mode than what makes u think Smash can, but the VERY Least they could do is implement a "After Getting Hit" Action setting (Especially Airdodge & Double Jump, MAYBE Down B for counter characters), & to fix the CPU Shuffling setting to actually work right. Is that REALLY too much to ask for since they're almost seemless to implement, especially when 90% of other fighting games that came out this gen actually have it too?
I'd love a followup video more on juggles. I knew what juggles are already, but I have a lot of trouble juggling without just getting hit by Link's down air for example.
Is there a list somewhere of each character's kill confirms? Trapping (with fire, roller, ground, disable, stun, etc.) attacks + smash attacks are obvious, but I'm less sure about others.
I hope I win. I'm just a guy really down on his luck. I go to Streetpass San Diego just to spend time with other players. Sadly my life has turn for the worse on my finances so I had to sell everything I could to survive. The only thing I want to do is play and have an Nintendo switch. Do you have a tip to know if a combo is true? I'm getting started and I see that training mode in this game is a little bit poor, theres no option to set the enemy to do any recover or action when he is getting hit. I'm just messing around with the basics, I played and like so many fighting games like Tekken 7, DBFZ or SFV, but this game is confusing to me in terms of "comboying".

Skyedogg It is harder.. traditional combos follow up with inputs just by memory, smash you have to do a follow up that correlates with the opponents blowback

@@skyedogg Played a lot of fighting games in the past. Atleast for me theres a lot more to take account to starting a combo in smash and a lot harder to pull off consistently than traditional fighters.
You smash players have weird term association for everything. Frametraps are when you trick someone into throwing out a move that has recovery that you can punish while pressuring them because they think they are safe to do so, and the same concept applies in smash. For example, only doing the first hit of your jab combo on block then not throwing out anything, and waiting for them to block, roll, or spot dodge so you can punish those options with a down smash or grab would be considered a frametrap to any traditional fighting game player if you taught them Smash from square 0 today. What he is describing here as a "frametrap" is just forcing a 50/50. And no, 50/50s are not that aerial stuff that he talks about in another video, that is just hitbox+framedata vs hitbox+framedata since air moves can't be cancelled. And also, why do you guys call recovery frames "lag"? I feel like the naming scheme is a big factor elitist traditional fighter players blow you guys off, because all the broken down base mechanics are still generally the same between this and a trad fighter but you just call them by weird ass names.
And I personally think your definition of frametraps stands better for "fake out" than actual "frame trap", where you basically trap your opponent because of framedata...
@@zed3ty Recovery is frame data my dude. Yes I know not in smash but in general that is what that means. The amount of frames it takes to take another action after executing a particular action during which you are vulnerable.
It has the most input lag out of any smash game, likely because of the fact that its on unreal 4. It's still only like 1 frame more than smash 4 tho so its really not that bad.
@@samsonfgc3472 Offline it's ok for me,yeah noticable but i can play very fast,online on the other hand is for me nearly unplayable, I'm very sensitive to this input delay. Online i lose against every friend which i destroy offline. And they have it too,but they don't sense it. I don't really understand how someone can NOT feel this amount of delay. And it's not the internet even if I'm sitting next to them and play with there network, it's always the same.
@Fairy Bottle Thats not the problem i even played there with their controller and feel this shit. Offline is fine for me. Like i said some lucky guys don't feel the input lag or just have not a fast playstyle. Of course enough player just get used to it. But i hate the difference between Online and Offline Smash.

Now I know how I'm not getting the combos that I try to Land cuz usually what happens is that i go online in Solo battles and input lag occurs so therefore no combos performed while the opponent seems to have no lag and always gets combos on me. I always get Edgeguarded, grabbed, stage spiked and I dont know why but anyways thanks for the advice man

Pretty sure a frame trap in traditional fighters is just knocking someone down or doing something where it may not count as a combo because they're not still in hit stun but they don't have enough time to block or do any attack or anything so it's basically still a combo. So this isn't too dissimilar.
that puts them in nearly the same situation though, and was the main example for frame traps in 50/50s in the previous game, now that there's directional air dodging though things have changed and it adds another aspect to frame trapping and comboing which is nice
Great tips bro, I’m new to smash and I’m trying to learn this “combo” system. But I keep thinking to myself about SF Games, MK, Injustice etc. And it’s NOTHING like that. This helped me slow my button presses and time my attacks. However, it’s still difficult AF for me to grab this concept lol

When they have enough frames to begin making a move, but get hit if they do, like letting someone out of a block string for 2 frames so they don't auto-gaurd anymore but they can't actually press a button. You can do that in smash, & it's called that specific thing. Those are follow ups from a setup i.e. grab.

Yeah, anyone else consider Training Mode in desperate need of an upgrade? Not everyone has local friends to test real combos on (in fact not even 10% nowadays), so they can't even test real combos at all! I still have issues setting up edgeguards BC of this since my biggest weakness for that is double jump out of 1st hit, & I can't even properly practice it BC barely anyone who lives in my city plays smash at all, let alone competitively.
Training Mode's got an upgrade here, but to say it's absolutely not enough would be an understatement that would absolutely crush every other understatement made in the universe combined
Go outside loser. Not even 10% of players have a local friend that can play smash with them. I have 5 friends(were all graduated btw) on my side of town (in a small town I might add ) that have smash and we play all the time. Don't cry for a training mode go make friends

It really is luck based, the fact that you were able to get FIVE people in a small town, all graduated, feels a lot more of luck than anything. Oh, & don't even get me started on those who live in the middle of nowhere & have absolutely 0% chance of finding local partners even if they're extremely nice people
You're the extreme exception, & at best case scenario only about 30% of US players actually have local partners available as options. The other 70% (& Likely more than that) don't have that option available to them (whether they're in the middle of nowhere, live somewhere where gaming isn't as popular of a culture, or are just plain rude), & they'd have to move JUST to be able to do those practical combos! & if you for any reason, family or money related, can't move, well, you're fucked!

@@Schokosnuss Keyword LOCAL. It's much easier nowadays to find friends online than it is Local in 99.9967% of all cases! The "Best" way to try practical combos outside of actual matches is to setup a battle arena with Infinite Time, but that has SO many issues in & of itself. You can't change percentages, you can't reset stale moves easily (unless killing yourself does so & I didn't notice), & if either of you don't have a mic you also can't communicate on what u need to be done easily. I'm not asking for an online training mode, BC really, if not even DBFZ can include an online training mode than what makes u think Smash can, but the VERY Least they could do is implement a "After Getting Hit" Action setting (Especially Airdodge & Double Jump, MAYBE Down B for counter characters), & to fix the CPU Shuffling setting to actually work right. Is that REALLY too much to ask for since they're almost seemless to implement, especially when 90% of other fighting games that came out this gen actually have it too?

Is there a list somewhere of each character's kill confirms? Trapping (with fire, roller, ground, disable, stun, etc.) attacks + smash attacks are obvious, but I'm less sure about others.

Do you have a tip to know if a combo is true? I'm getting started and I see that training mode in this game is a little bit poor, theres no option to set the enemy to do any recover or action when he is getting hit. I'm just messing around with the basics, I played and like so many fighting games like Tekken 7, DBFZ or SFV, but this game is confusing to me in terms of "comboying".

Skyedogg It is harder.. traditional combos follow up with inputs just by memory, smash you have to do a follow up that correlates with the opponents blowback

You smash players have weird term association for everything.
Frametraps are when you trick someone into throwing out a move that has recovery that you can punish while pressuring them because they think they are safe to do so, and the same concept applies in smash. For example, only doing the first hit of your jab combo on block then not throwing out anything, and waiting for them to block, roll, or spot dodge so you can punish those options with a down smash or grab would be considered a frametrap to any traditional fighting game player if you taught them Smash from square 0 today.
What he is describing here as a "frametrap" is just forcing a 50/50.
And no, 50/50s are not that aerial stuff that he talks about in another video, that is just hitbox+framedata vs hitbox+framedata since air moves can't be cancelled.
And also, why do you guys call recovery frames "lag"?
I feel like the naming scheme is a big factor elitist traditional fighter players blow you guys off, because all the broken down base mechanics are still generally the same between this and a trad fighter but you just call them by weird ass names.
We don't call em "recovery frames" because a recovery is actually a whole move, y'know, the UpB thing to get back on stage. That's why.
And I personally think your definition of frametraps stands better for "fake out" than actual "frame trap", where you basically trap your opponent because of framedata...

It has the most input lag out of any smash game, likely because of the fact that its on unreal 4. It's still only like 1 frame more than smash 4 tho so its really not that bad.
@@samsonfgc3472 Offline it's ok for me,yeah noticable but i can play very fast,online on the other hand is for me nearly unplayable, I'm very sensitive to this input delay. Online i lose against every friend which i destroy offline. And they have it too,but they don't sense it. I don't really understand how someone can NOT feel this amount of delay. And it's not the internet even if I'm sitting next to them and play with there network, it's always the same.
Also GameCube controllers may have more lag than switch controllers

Like i said some lucky guys don't feel the input lag or just have not a fast playstyle. Of course enough player just get used to it. But i hate the difference between Online and Offline Smash.

Now I know how I'm not getting the combos that I try to Land cuz usually what happens is that i go online in Solo battles and input lag occurs so therefore no combos performed while the opponent seems to have no lag and always gets combos on me. I always get Edgeguarded, grabbed, stage spiked and I dont know why but anyways thanks for the advice man

Pretty sure a frame trap in traditional fighters is just knocking someone down or doing something where it may not count as a combo because they're not still in hit stun but they don't have enough time to block or do any attack or anything so it's basically still a combo. So this isn't too dissimilar.

For the tip of frame trapping in the beginning of the vid, at low percents I'm pretty sure you can just jump to escape the frame trap.
that puts them in nearly the same situation though, and was the main example for frame traps in 50/50s in the previous game, now that there's directional air dodging though things have changed and it adds another aspect to frame trapping and comboing which is nice

Great tips bro, I’m new to smash and I’m trying to learn this “combo” system. But I keep thinking to myself about SF Games, MK, Injustice etc. And it’s NOTHING like that. This helped me slow my button presses and time my attacks. However, it’s still difficult AF for me to grab this concept lol
