    It's one of my favorite patterns to tie. But the lesson I got out of this one is that "There is no future in growing old"! Gee, you got that one right. I do a lot of blueline fishing, the trout are not big, thou you do get some surprises. I travel light, a spool of 5 x, and some letort hoppers in the 14 and 16 will make for a very very enjoyable day. Jumping the odd White Tail buck is just icing on the cake. What I really like about this sort of thing is that it harkens back to my youth. What I did as a little kid. Now I do it more to get away from the crowds. Oh and the rod of choice is an old 1960s 8' 5 wt Fenwick Glass rod and a 1492 Phlugger Medalist Reel- I am up in VT right now at my favorite cafe doing lunch the fishing has been pretty good, I expect the week to be fantastic later on. Home tonight back on Wed.

      In Texas these will catch just about any freshwater fish. I use a box of these and a 3 weight glass myself. Love to hike and blue line here in TX.

    I do this with some variations. 1. I spin the collar. 2. I pack and add hair to get a tight head. 3. My body is elk hair that is tied in wide wraps around a 2x long shank as opposed to the dub. 3. I add knotted pheasant tail legs for to represent the "hopper legs" before I add the collar. It gives me a great profile and legs, and hair stabilize the fly. The hair body adds floatation. Fishes all day and catches!

    Nice fly, thanks for the video. Also I like how you can just unclip your glasses quick then clip them back together! That seems very handy.

    Is Kelly purposely trying troll us by not having any sound during the intro? No matter how many times I watch your videos I always check to see if my volume is turned up. Love the videos though, keep them coming!

    Btw...talkin about the deer head on this or gartside. The natural muddler has been a killer representation dressed with floatant for terrestrials for me. Its the multipurpose fly like a renegade. Im sure KG knows bout that.👍🏻

    I'm Johnny and I appreciate Kelly's art, but the kind on a hook. Anyway Kelly another entertaining video. For the guys that say you talk too much they should probably listen more, you do a lot of fishing education when you're tying flies. I really appreciate it. Have you ever done any fishing in north central Nebraska. I was working out there until the virus thing sent me home and there's quite a few streams and not too many people. Inquiring mind want to know.

    The way the head was done I learned from Jorgensen. Maybe in 'Salmon Flies'? The idea was you didn't want muddler heads packed too tight like you often see.

    Where I live in Washington we get small pale green hoppers. Like almost fluorescent green. Think the color of lume on your watch hands.

      Instead of cutting the fly with scissors i use a double edge razorblade you can make a beautiful head on it.

    A great fly! Mr. Shenk was truly one of the greats. I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time back in 2002 at the old Cold Spring Anglers fly shop in Carlisle. He was not only a wealth of info, but just a super nice guy. Shenks Cricket and Shenks White Minnow are other creations of his that are mainstays for me.

      Spray both sides of the turkey feather with one light coat of clear enamel and it won't split apart when dry 24 hrs.

  • @matthewallred72
    @matthewallred72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I've done about a dozen or so of these and can't keep that wing from splitting. I've tried everything from hairspray to head cement to hard as nails and no matter what I do the wing splits.

      I use the tip of the turkey tail the thinnest part, on the back of the feather i use fixative, i spray the whole back of the feather with it lightly waving it.You can get it at any arts and craft store it drys quick in a few minutes. its like a clear urethane dont need much and make sure its the back,at the bottom of the feather the fibers are to fat they will just roll or split on you.You can also use sally hansen's clear nail polish its clear just do the part on top just like before.It dries quick the fiberrs move without splitting .If you have any questions id be happy to help. : )
