Your new series of fly tying videos is amazing. You often joke about them being too long, but they are perfect. Sure you could teach us to tie any of your flies in a video less than 10 minutes long, but the additional 20 minutes (or more) of lessons on dubbing, deer hair, proportions, etc., are pure gold. Thanks for taking the time to share your expertise.

Thank you Kelly. My most memorable fish of 2018 was caught on this fly. I watched this video and tied a few up before hitting some new water with a friend and it all ended with a big gorgeous wild brown in the dark on a #14. Your the man! Thank you for putting these out into the world.

Nice looking fly Kelly! I'm going to tie some for the Callabaetis hatch on Hebgen. I believe divided tails may be worthwhile for that. Those bugs have some pretty prominent tails, and those trout, even when feeding heavily, can get picky.
I'm going to make some. Love your videos. I used to fish the Betsie & Platte Rivers in Michigan. Been to Traverse City many times but never fished the Boardman. I'm from Pa & I'm sure the found link will work here.
After 46 years of fly fishing I'm down to about 6 flies almost always and 12 total for anywhere - anytime. He's using one mayfly exclusively. Occams razor. I'm glad I found him here.

First of all, thank you for your You Tube videos. I have watched several of them and others peoples. You truly have a gift to make, create and teach. I have had no fly time experience whatsoever until I started watching your videos. I can actually make a fly now this was probably my favorite video that you have done. Maybe there’s a couple others that are really close to being the best. I never even thought about using a barbless hook until I watched your videos. I use them with hook. I’ve use now they’re so easy on the fish and easy on the fisherman so thank you again. I went to buy one of your small hair stackers and it says out of order do you know when you will get them Back thank you apparently Work well or you wouldn’t be sold out
I had to figure out how to tie Bobby’s Spinner a few years back and later on realized this fly is quite similar. The hardest thing to do besides mastering proportions is to not crush the deer hair body. I love Mike Mercer patterns, but this thing kills the original missing link in all but the skinniest/ clear water. Great floatation and durability and absolutely lethal with a size 18 S&M nymph off the back- money.

That would be killer pattern for the yellow drakes up here in Northern Michigan with just a slight change in color. Definitely going to be tying up a batch of those pretty soon👍🏻
Well it did get its birth from the Roberts Yellow Drake, just use a yellow thread and a light olive thorax and it will rock. KG

Forgive the naiveté, I've only been fly fishing / fly tying for 5, maybe 6 years tops...but I just realized another highly effective pattern that utilizes the deer hair tail support is the standard Stimulator. Wondering now if the attractor properties of this fly have less to do with stonefly/terrestrial imitation than the way it floats on surface with both front and back flotation support. Going to experiment tying some "micro" Stimulators to see if downsizing makes any difference. Welcome any thoughts though.
This hair flairs alot less than the NS comparadun(and x-caddis) stuff I have......I think that piece you have is special.

One can learn a lot about sub-surface fly patterns, by tying dry flies. One of the main things, is that with surface floating patterns, its unavoidable to need to contemplate what the pattern will appear like, seen with the light of the sky coming through it, from underneath. It's amazing how few anglers look at their flies against a light bulb to simulate that same viewpoint. Fish normally see things like dry flies, against a light source. Tyers like Mikeal Frodin over here though, tie salmon patterns designed to catch larger species underneath the water. However, even he came to a conclusion a long time ago, that his fish usually look at the fly from underneath. Again, when creating patterns that's rarely considered - many Salmon patterns for example, people look at them and think of them - as viewed side on. It's kind of tragic that flies are presented that way in so many magazines, publications, catalogues.
A lot of what people are over dressed to the tune of about three times, in terms of material. The justification being, that one doesn't want to be 'sold short' in terms of what's dressed on the hook. A consequence of that, is often flies don't start to actually hunt properly, until they're half worn away. The key thing about this pattern, is it presents something from a fish's perspective, that has parts that are opaque, and parts are that semi-transparent. That ambiguity is something that is common to a lot of patterns, made with different materials, and for different applications.
It was really the saltwater fly patterns for some reason that started to use transparency. Maybe it's the fact that in saltwater one is dealing with such huge expanses, and such a tiny bait, that those fly tyers finally started to get serious about what they used to build flies with. An awful lot too, can be learned from looking at the kind of invertebrates that live in these saltwater situations. I used a little more Marabou in last couple of years. I'm surprised by it as a material. There is a transparent quality to the material, that I didn't think was there. Mainly out of my ignorance.
I'd like to see Kelly take a run at a dry fly pattern that used Deer hair and Marabou some time. I use the CDC, Deer and Coq De Leon combination an awful lot (although, the deer hair tail, in this pattern is a new one to me). Marabou can become even more brilliant when seen through light than CDC or Coq De Leon.
Lee Wulff used hackles like Coq De Leon in a different way too. He winded them, to make a traditional hackled fly, by just winding the Coq De Leon feather. Maybe a pair of them winded together as a shoulder hackle fly. Except that the hackles ended up being, three times longer than normal hackles would. He used this patterns that cart wheeled across the water surface, like a big wheel shaped fly, to provoke interest from large salmon underneath. Whole idea with other large species of fish, is not to cover them with the same style of fly all the time. Introduce many changes in shape and size. There's a little bit of that too, sometimes in fishing for trout species, on the larger end of the scale.
totally agree Brian, not sure I have ever had an angler pick a dry out of the bin and look at it from the bottom up.

How is the durability of this pattern?
KG - do you ever coat the deer hair body w' super glue to increase the durability and do you ever wrap a hackle in front for added flotation?
We will generally use a lacquer style glue if we do it, or you could use the thin or flow resin from loon as well. I have seen him do it on the Galloup's Drake as well. Any of those hair or quill bodies it is not a bad idea to hit those with some glue for sure! Just dont add to much so it doesnt sink! As for the hackle, you could most certainly add one in. The beauty of the straight up Found Link is it is a fast bug that you dont have to mess with a hackle, but you can definitely add one in!

What is GSP? and does one brand's "GSP" differ from another in quality or strength?
G.S.P (Gel Spun Polyethylene) We use the UTC GSP, it seems to be the best for what we do.
How do you think this pattern would work for the Brown Drake batch here in Michigan?
think it would be great but hard to beat the Troutsman brown drake. i am going to tie it in the next few weeks if all goes well

How do you grease this fly? Only on the hair or are there times when you also grease the zelon?
Air, I dip the flies so the whole thing is greased

Kelly- What kind of brush do you use for cleaning hair and how is the brush attached to your desk?
David- Kelly uses a regular comb like you buy at the pharmacy for cleaning his hair. He has a vise made by Dyna-King that is attached to his desk that hold the comb upright and we sell them on our online store. You can buy the vise by itself or you can buy the comb holder combo which comes with a C-Clamp, the comb holder vise, and a comb. It's not really possible as the only true white deer hair comes from the Belly. Bleached is the closest thing to white in the comparadun world

Was just at a Fly Shop and asked them what "/o" their GSP thread was...they said "no /o" on this....but rather 200 and 100 denier...i said.."All thred has an /o"....
Mark, the OG was 200 then it went 100, 75 and 50. Shortly there after it came in /0 sizes. Roman Mouser and Semper fly. We imported Roman for a long time, and then Semper came along and they have 6, 8, 12, 18 and I think 24/0. I would be lost with out it. Kelly
