      I remember his last film would have been an Edgar Allan Poe biopic starring Jeffrey Combs.
      He tried to crowdfund the film on Kickstarter, and I backed it, but it didn't meet it's goal.
      It still boggles my mind how the horror community didn't go all in on that and make it happen.

    Best Lovecraft movie. Saw it many times! You can really see that the director knows Lovecraft and Innsmouth. He may even be some kind of fan of the source material. All actors are great in this... except maybe the drowning couple and the protagonist. But the high priestess is outstanding!

    I've been looking for this this movie because of this video. The blu-ray came in last month, but I didn't get a chance to watch it until about 2 weeks ago. It is the best direct Lovecraft adaptation I have ever watched. I think the Spanish language part of it made it even more alien for me, a native English speaker who took 3 years of French and zero of Spanish. Everything about the movie was played completely straight. There was none of the camp that normally suffuses Stuart Gordon's movies. The practical effects were a little unconvincing in places but the fact that they hid so much and let your brain fill in the gaps made up for it. The big monster reveal at the end, while brief, was, for their budget, very impressive. I felt every moment of this movie. The fear, the unknowing, the gnawing tickle at the back of your mind that you're missing something. It was such a fantastic telling of the Shadow Over Innsmouth. The music was beautiful, the atmosphere was perfect. I felt Uxia's longing and Paul's righteous revulsion and eventual acceptance of the inevitable. I have no idea how I missed this movie for so longer . For anybody who hasn't seen this who is a fan of Lovecraft, please watch it. Please buy a copy. Apparently it was critically and commercially panned when it was initially released. Everybody hated it. Even people who were fans of this type of movie hated it. According to the interviews included on the blu-ray, nobody wanted a movie about fish people. Well I do. And this is it. And it's awesome.

  • @Formakiwi
    @Formakiwi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Lovecraft is basically unfilmable. Much like Stephen King, the effectiveness of his work relies so much on the reader's own imagination that any attempt at concrete representation inevitably disappoints with its inherent mundanity.

    • @tylerskiss
      @tylerskiss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I disagree because we've seen both of them done right when the right people are involved. Frank Darabont has managed to capture the spirit of several Stephen King stories and often, what little changes he makes are usually improvements on the source material. Lovecraft has had several excellent direct adaptations (Color Out of Space) and inspired works (Underwater, In The Mouth of Madness).

      I wouldn't say it's better than "Cigarette Burns", "Pelts", or "Sick Girl" but it's certainly one of the best... That whole show is great and only a couple of episodes were weak.

    • @davetheimpaler204
      @davetheimpaler204 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly is one of the best of that series and there were many great episodes.
      His Edgar Allan Poe episode in season 2 was also great and Gordon was supposed to do a feature-length Poe biopic starring Jeffrey Combs.
      Gordon tried to crowdfund it on Kickstarter, and I backed it, but it didn't meet it's funding goal.

    I love this movie. Yes it's low budget, and yes (at least in the states) about the only place you could see it was on the Sci-Fi Channel, but this is truly a haunting film that stays with you. I went out and bought a VHS copy shortly after I first saw it (yes I'm that old). I'm so happy to see this film finally starting to get some love over the last 3-4 years. If you don't own it yet (and you still like physical media), check out the Vestron Video Blu-ray released last year. It really did right by this movie.

    I was horrified by this film when I first saw it. All I could remember after leaving the theater was that it was a film where people were turned into fish and I did not want to see it again. As I grew older I guess I had chances to see this, but I allowed it to fade from my memory--except that I knew I was scared of it--then one day, I started thinking about it, and sought it out. Now it is a film I watch at least every Holloween.

I'm guessing they wanted to make Innsmouth, but couldn't get the rights, so they just slapped the "Dagon" title on it.
    Anyway, loved the movie and still own it on VHS.

    This wasn't Gordon's last Lovecraft adaptation. I have no idea what 'obvious low budget' means. You really should elaborate. The tone is akin to BOTH his previous Lovecraft adaptations, to a T. Darkly humorous and absurd(it's about fucking fish people) but still a bit intense and dangerous. Goddard embodies that perfectly(which I would assume is why Gordon hired him to be the lead in his next Lovecraft adaptation.) Finally, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids WAS Gordon's. NOT Disney's. He left the project as director because he didn't want to work with a bunch of suits breathing down his neck. He valued the independence of independent filmmaking brought him, NOT low budget filmmaking, independent. There's a difference. He didn't make movies like Things or Birdemic. He was a real creator.

    Maybe the best Spanish horror films of all time are Chicho Ibañez Serrador's Who Can Kill a Child, Eugenio Martín's Horror Express, Bigas Luna's Anguish and Alex de la Iglesia's The Day of the Beast, but this is another story.

    This movie is actually so enjoyable to watch, and it had the perfect amount of cheesy. I was kind of expecting a let down, but I thought it had good acting (imo) and in particular I find myself as one of the odd ones out who enjoyed Ezra's performance quite a bit and it all looked fairly intentional to me, and it reminded me of a Lynch film. Also there's great special effects, and the plot stays really unpredictable. It has its rough edge like the terrible cgi (but I'll say, still serviceable) and some special effects blunders here and there. But overall I loved it, it got me tense, and like any hp lovecraft story, had me pondering big things at the end. Highly recommend

    I could of sworn Dagon was a medieval horror movie by Gordon starring Lance Henriksen, lol.

    I've never seen ANY Lovecraft story successfully adapted to the "big-screen" - THIS ONE - is the closest one they got and the best they made. It's simply impossible to make a "movie" on a Lovecraft novel, because you'd have to invent a plot "ad-hoc". BY THE WAY! This movie may have been called "Dagon" but it's not based on Lovecraft's "Dagon" novel (that remained unfinished as far as I remember), but tells another tale - the one from "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". Lovecraft books and novels have no deep plot whatsoever - they are about something else, in contrast to Stephen King which - basically! - is all about a good story. There's DOZEN'S (if not more) King's novels & books turned into movies, because the script is easy - it's right there in the book. Lovecraft? I don't think we'll EVER see a movie based on something HE wrote. Honestly - I wouldn't even know where to start from! Which Lovecraft's novel or book has the longest plot? - ironically! - "Shadow Over Innsmouth" is probably the longest, then (MAYBE!) - "At The Mountains Of Madness". All the others would make for a very scary but 5 mins long "movie", just like mine favourite - "PICKMAN'S MODEL".

    Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is low concept. High concept refers to character driven films that need to be thoroughly explained to understand. Low concept refers to concepts that can be quickly and simply described. "A dad builds a shrink ray and his kids get shrunk". Idk why but "high concept" is almost always misused.
